A friend and I were talking about comedians that are not funny. The first person that comes to mind is Pauly Shore. I also think Carol Burnett is not funny.

I like to hear my fellow CAGers have to say about this topic..

I don't find him funny at all. I could make fart noises with my armpit or watch someone get hit in the nuts with anything and it would be a million times more entertaining. I'm basing this on his CD "Skanks for the Memories" - it's all I really know of him and I didn't even crack a smile while listening to it...

Robin Williams is NOT funny. In fact, he annoys the hell outta me. I can't even stand to watch any of his movies, let alone see him do stand-up. Ugh!

Jimmy Fallon is also another idiot that completely annoys me. He's not funny. He's just an Adam Sandler wanna-be. Sandler is great though.

One of my favorite stand-up comediens is Joe Rogan, the guy who hosts Fear Factor. I recently heard his CD and I it was hilarious! I couldn't believe it. I had no idea he was such a great stand-up. Dont let Fear Factor or The Man Show fool you. Listen to his CD. The best comedy CD I heard recently. David Cross and Dave Attell both also have great stand-up routines I heard recently on CD while I was on a long road trip.

You have to make some distinctions here. There may be some comedians you don't care for but their ability to work an audience is beyond dispute. Carol Burnett had a career most can only dream of achieving a fraction in comparison

There's a special category of comedians who are purposefully not funny but manage an elaborate scam of convincing people they're obligated to laugh because they're saying something important.

Ace of Spade recently tore into Margaret Cho in a really big way.

Jimmy Fallon is abu0t as funny as a 12 y/o boy saying dirty words. I must agree that he is WAY over hyped.

Seinfeld is still my favorite show of all time. There still hasnt been a tv show thats come close to that since it went off the air. Even watching the reruns for the hundreth time daily is better than watching any current sitcom on the air now.
As for stand-up...Jerry Seinfeld is ok. But not great. But the tv show was hilarious.

david letterman seems to have lost a bunch of his humor over the years. All he does on the show now is look at ppls digital cam pics at a deli or do top 10. oh I almost forgot another great comedian= Conan O' Brien

CaboWabo

Lettermans show was definatly much better in the early days when it was NBC. He did more skits and stunts and stupid pet/human tricks etc... I'd rather see that stuff rather than him interviewing guest stars.

Same thing with Conan Obrien. The stupid skits and things he does are hilarious, especially Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, PimpBot, and the Masturbating Bear.

Jerry Seinfield.

And Jim Norton (short bald guy on tough crowd) is one of the funniest people alive.

And on 'tough Crowd' he's often the only one who appears to read those book thingies with all the informationa and stuff in them.

I've gotton tired of comics whose gags are dependent on a dead ignorant approach to a subject. I used to enjoy Lewis Black but his recent HBO special was so awful that I can't bear to look at him again yet.

Jay Leno!

I agree totally. The audiences seem to enjoy him...but if you look at how many times he basically has to beg for applause or laughter on the Tonight Show. He'll tell a joke, it'll bomb, he'll acknowledge that it bombed, Keving Eubanks will acknowledge that it bombed, but the audience will still applaud or whatever. I know that those jokes are coming from a staff of writers as well, so maybe they need to be on this list too.

Other comedians...heck, most of those Blue Collar Comedy Tour guys...Larry the Cable Guy in particular. I happened onto one of his specials on Comedy Central when they did Hick Weekend or whatever and it's just lame observations, fart jokes and then he says "Git 'r done" whenever he needs applause...but it isn't even really worked in, he just kind of says it.

Who else...I'm not a big fan of Adam Sandler or Dana Carvey.

And my list of funny people: Kevin James, Patton Oswalt, Greg Giraldo, Ray Romano, Fred Armisen, Seinfeld, Conan O'Brien, Ben Stiller, David Cross, Amy Poehler, Bob Odenkirk, Jack Black (most of the time) and most importantly: WILL FERRELL AND STEVE MARTIN.

Yaeh i believe spoo is right, dave attell is one of the funniest guys doing stand-up. I love his show on comedy central, Insomniac with dave Attel is just hilarious. It's not like a Jackass or Wildboys which is retarded supposedly funny, but it is quite good.

Other than that your list is quite good, but most of them are o.k. comedians, When you said ellen Degeneras is bad, i highly agree with you.. She to me is not funny at all. Margaret Cho is not bad though. Jeff Fox worthy is horrible.

two that i would add to the list that i haven't seen yet are Sinbad and Carrot Top. Oh wait, when i think about it, I did see him but you can never mention him enough.

To me, how long a comedian's career is not a factor when I think about whether he (or she) is good or not. There are people who seem to have sucess despite the fact that no one seems to care.

A perfect example is Pauly Shore. How did he managed to make one movie after another? All those movies must of cost about 10 million dollars (in the '80's). thats a lot of money for a bunch of unfunny movies..

There is a few more things I have to say: I do think Dave Attell is hilarious; I love that cd "Skanks for the Memories"

I never liked the Seinfield show. I never like any of the characters (except Kramer) because they were all despicable people.

Another comedian I never thought was funny (and this is a controversal pick) is Adam Sandler. I saw "Billy Madison" and I felt my brainwaves slow down to a crawl. I thought it was mind numbling stupid.

His mother is Mitzi Shore who owned The Comedy Store on Sunset Strip. So that was his ticket. And then later he got the MTV gig. The whole 'chillin' wit tha weeeaaassel' thing was funny for its time back then...in a Bill & Ted or Waynes World sort of way. But it got old fast and the style of the humor is too 80's dated now to be funny. But then again...Sean Penn's character on Fast Times At Ridgemont High started all that and it will remain a timeless classic!

Gilda Radner was pretty funny. A lot of female comedians are bad though....

Here are some facts about female comediennes:
Did you know Jenny Jones was a comedienne (before her bad tv show). She would do shows to a female-only audience (Men were not allowed inside the comedy club)
Also, John Belushi never preformed SNL skits that were written by women; He thought women could not write comedy.

Yeah, wholy shit, he only smokes on stage cuz he wants to, and you shouldn't pick apart how he DOES his act, but whether or not his jokes are funny, and they are. Cigarettes isn't the only thing he talks about, and even though he's crude (I) think he's damn funny...

Of course all of this is a matter of IYO

sheesh again deadzone.. why swear so much?

I know you don't want me swearing, but at least don't be so hypocritical about it. I see some of your posts and you say (shaq-fu) constantly, but if I say one swear you point it out? I just don't understand it. And I know I can be intelligent but, yeah.

Carot Top
Ellen
Howie Mandel
cant think of any more.As for greatist comedian of the last 100 years of course is Sir Geroge Carlin.

I think Ron White is funnier than any of the people on the blue collar comedy tour. His CD is hilarious

I already owned three of Bill Engvall's CDs before that tour but it was through a club deal where they were only about $3.50 each delivered, so I could easily get my money back if they didn't connect for me. I've still got them andeven paid for his more recent 'Autobiography of a Cheap Drunk.'

It can be hard to predict what will connect and what won't. I generally don't care for whole Southern culture-such-as-it-is shtick but Engvall I like.

I expected to like the body of Bill Hick's work more but familiarity bred contempt. His whole conspiracy theory obsession thing got very old halfway through a show.

Dennis Miller has gotten to be soooooo unfunny.. remember when he was a comedian? anyone..anyone.. I swear he is more annoying than carrottop because he tries to pass himself off as an intelectual with all of his lame pop culture references.

He did his weekly appearance on the John & Ken Show on KFI 640 AM today and was very funny.

I think your real problem with Miller is that he dares to be honest about his beliefs and they aren't leaning left.

Unique style? Oh please, go listen to Steven Wright's album from twenty years ago. Hedberg is good but he owes as much to Wright as Steven Tyler does to Mick Jagger. Hedberg essentially does Wright's act with a stoner accent along with a touch of autism.

One notable thing about many of these candidates is they are often people who were very successful long ago but are long since past their prime. It can be hard to appreciate some acts if you don't catch them in the era that spawned them. Often the case is they were very original and stood out but have been imitated so much since that younger viewers have trouble knowing the difference.

I saw Robin Williams perform before he'd done the Happy Days guest shot that led to 'Mork & Mindy' and overexposure. At the time nobody else out there could come even close to his energy and improvisational ability. It was the kind of thing that could leave you paralyzed with laughter.

It doesn't work forever. The performer slows down, the material is less in tune with the times, and the audience has seen it too many times before.

A lot of the names that have come up here repeatedly had their moments of greatness. Billy Crystal had a routine about adolescent lust that killed and still does. That doesn't mean he can create a comparable act today but nothing erases that past moment. George Carlin gave up humor for ranting and raving in the late 80's but there were five albums in the 70's that remain masterpieces. Jack Benny was a superstar when my parents were children but you'd have trouble getting the average 14-year0old to sit still for it today. Their approach to humor is much too subjective to appreciate that of different eras. Sometimes they grow out of it, sometimes they don't.

If you examine his history you'll find he was never a lefty. He just found himself isolated when priciples started to matter and found out who his friends really were.

As of a few months ago the proper tense is past, as in was. Again, I doubt you've ever seen him in the proper context. I've got some a CD series of early appearances by standups like George Carlin's first Ed Sullivan in a suit (!) and one of the segments is Alan King. It was a good five minute set. This was in 1959, not the old guy you're used to seeing on talk show and such.

Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor.

This is a really interesting thread. It's amazing how different the opinions are on some comedians, where they'll be on one person's worst list, and someone else's best list. Here are some of my opinions on the subject.

NOT FUNNY: Margaret Cho, Bob Hope, Carrot Top, Richard Lewis, Jim Brewer (GoatBoy on SNL), Jackie Mason, Andrew Dice Clay, Rosie O'Donnell, Gallagher, Jay Leno, Billy Crystal

FUNNY: Sam Kinison, Steve Martin, Bill Hicks, Paula Poundstone, Richard Jeni, Kevin James, Conan O'Brian, John Stewart

For any of you who don't know who Bill Hicks is, do yourself a favor and go pick up his "Rant in E Minor" CD. You'll thank me later.

Billy Crystal sucks, Bill Cosby sucks, Jimmy Fallon sucks, Carrot Top sucks, any women comdian sucks.

Why you hatin on the puddin man (Cosby)? LOL

It's your opinion (I respect it) but to me Bill is the funniest person around. He doesn't have to tell one-liners, slapstick or swear every other word like a sailor. He talks to the crowd like he is just having a conversation and his humor is effortless. The Cosby Show is the only sit-com I ever saw that seemed totally believeable but amazingly funny. None of the characters were caricatures. They all seemed like real people. His comedy albums are great too.

Anyways, here are mine...

Michael Ian Black (tries WAY to hard).
Kathy Griffin
Ellen Degeneres
Jay Leno (He has his moments but not enough of them)
Rob Schnieder is awful.

The thing about Cosby is that he takes a long time for the setup before he gets the punchline. It was acceptable in the 60's to the 80's but now adays everyone has A.D.D. and they want quicker faster jokes. I think thats why some people in this thread do not like Cosby

I heard Screech tried some standup at a college and the ENTIRE audience walked out on him. I think Big Nick told that story....

If they walked out I can tell you exactly why as I heard his Stand-up at Emporia state, he did some down and dirty stand-up that probably offended some people. Funny though.

I could[...] watch someone get hit in the nuts with anything and it would be a million times more entertaining.

Are you telling me that you can watch a guy hit in the nuts and not laugh? "Lowbrow" or no, that's still funny. Also, a word for Gallagher, you know, you have to give a guy credit. All he did was smash stuff with a big freakin mallet and he got loads of cash for it, whether it was funny or not.

The whole cast of Last Comic Standing? Aww, c'mon, that's a bit of a stretch. Only MOST of them suck. Jay Mohr is okay sometimes; he's not the worst by any means, but nowhere near the best.

The worst are some of the most obvious: Pauly Shore, Carrot Top, Gallagher, Carol Burnette, etc.

Bill Cosby's standup is very good. He doesn't have to swear or criticize anything. His standup about what it would have been like to be on the frontlines of the American Revolution was hilarious.

Daniel Tosh is the best comedian ever (tied with Mitch Hedberg).

THE FLOOR IS LAVA!

Hell yea he is. I have Comedy Central Presents to thank for introducing me to these 2 comics and they are hilarious. Let's go play some Haha now you're poor!

I also don't understand why everyone rags on Carrot Top. I actually love his prop standup. His Pete Rose baseball uniform with the rollers that helped him steal bases had me laughing so hard.

Anyways, for my least favorite comedians, the nominations are:

1) Margaret Cho, I've tried watching some of her stuff and she is just not funny.
2) Not necessarily stand up comedians, but the entire cast of SNL after Ferrell left, and Mad TV after 2 years ago. I cannot even finish watching ONE sketch from either of these shows before I change the channel. They're that bad.
3) There's more but I can't think of them right now. If I do I'll post them later

I've always preferred comics who are legitimately funny without the need for legions of swearing as backup. So I gotta give credit to Cosby, Seinfeld, etc., even if they aren't the funniest out there.
