The Mana Knight

Developed by Level-5, creators of the renowned Dark Cloud series and Rogue Galaxy, Jeanne d'Arc delivers a new tactical role-playing adventure set across vast lands with detailed environments, unique characters, and a diverse combat and gameplay system.
In Jeanne d'Arc, players will step into a colorful world that brings together history and fantasy, taking part in a magical tale inspired by the life and times of the legendary Joan of Arc. Combining an intricate tactical combat system, a heroic story with more than 40 hours of gameplay, and a stunning visual style that truly dazzles on the PSP system, Jeanne d'Arc is ready to deliver hours of strategic RPG action to players anytime, anywhere.
"With the introduction of Jeanne d'Arc for PSP, Level-5 now brings their high standard of game development excellence to the portable world," said Jeff Reese, Director, Software Marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "The team has managed to create an action filled, mythical adventure that RPG fans and gamers alike will take anywhere they feel like playing, further adding depth to the ever expanding lineup of PSP software."
The Jeanne d'Arc story begins far in the past, when a great war was waged by mankind against demonic armies attempting to invade the human world. During that time, five brave heroes created armlets to restrain the demon gods. In a quest to turn back the rueful army, a young crusader named Jeanne is commanded by mysterious voices to use the power of the magical armlet to seal away the demon king and recover her homeland once and for all.
Set among sprawling fields, battle-torn villages, and intricate dungeons, Jeanne d'Arc unfolds through more than 40 expansive and highly detailed environments, where players will engage in the pursuit of France's resurgence. Players will control up to 14 characters throughout the journey, including humans and beasts, as they battle a variety of enemies in the quest to turn back the English domination. Jeanne d'Arc delivers a strategic, turn-based battle system where players engage in unique team attacks and defensive schemes, using multiple characters' skills in combination to create devastating strikes. Further adding to the depth of play, each character has access to one of eight weapon types that are also upgradeable as players' progress through the game. Additionally, players can customize their characters with more than 150 different skills and abilities throughout the game.
Jeanne d'Arc, exclusively for the PSP, will be available in North America August 2007.

I got the Japanese version of Jeanne D'arc a couple of days ago. Some very early impressions are that the graphics are very nice and the battle system seems a little simplistic compared to something like Disgaea (which I'm also trying to finish up at the moment). But then again I've only played about 2 hours so far. In any case, there are definitely some high production values, and it'll be one of the best games on the system, I think.

Anyone else get a demo? We just got them in at work a couple days ago. It has two missions, one at the beginning of the game and one in the middle, and a trailer on it.
I had a lot of fun with the demo. The battle system is very solid with your usual strat/RPG mechanics. I found it funny they gave the characters French accents. Kind of sounds cheesy. I understand they're French, but they're speaking English. I mean why bother at that point?

So, I saw a display for this at Target yesterday in their PSP game case. There was no game, but there was definitely a spot for it. I wonder if this is just somebody being really weird -- because the game doesn't come out for a couple of weeks and therefore that spot will continue to be empty for awhile -- or if the game is actually getting a surprise release or something?
Looks interesting, anyway. I'm hardly a BIG FAN of Level 5's, or anything, but they made my favorite game ever, so I tend to watch them!
hmm should have ask to see it. that would verify everything.

I'm kindof surprised GameSpy actually rated a game like this halfway decent. They're usually pretty anal with scores and many games which I've enjoyed they've rated really low. Oh well, good for the game I s'pose.

New Q&A.
Hi, I'm Nao Higo, producer of Jeanne d'Arc for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system. Jeanne d'Arc is a turn-based RPG based loosely on the story of Joan of Arc. It's made by Level-5, the developers of the Dark Cloud™ series, and Rogue Galaxy.™ I'm here to answer some questions from the Gamer Advisory Panel, a group of our most loyal PlayStation fans.
Our first question comes from SolidusPrime, who asks:
Were there any challenges and/or benefits to creating a strategy RPG game for the PSP?
Benefit-wise, a strategy RPG works well on the PSP for a few reasons. The first reason is the screen. The PSP's screen size and pixel count make it possible to create detailed environments, and we're able to display a large number of characters on the screen at once. The PSP works particularly well for strategy RPGs because the menus needed for this type of game take up a lot of real estate on the screen. Having the wide-screen format helped out a lot.
The other aspect is that strategy RPGs are something that you can play for 15-30 minutes at a time. Each stage takes approximately that long to clear, making it optimal for those who want to play the game while on the go.
The biggest challenge in creating a strategy RPG was that this was the first strategy RPG Level-5 has worked on, so everything had to be built from the ground up. There was a lot of experimentation done in the early phases of production to see what worked.
Next we have a question from joelg-gundam, who asks:
What made you decide to go with a strategy-based RPG (like FF Tactics) instead of the traditional Action RPG that your company is so well known for?
I went into this a bit with the previous question, but in terms of the PSP platform, it works well for strategy RPGs. But more so, Level-5 wanted a new challenge by trying out a new genre. Level-5 is known for action RPGs, but I think this shows that they aren't a "one-trick pony."
Here are a few from Dagger_32, who asks:
How will you be able to customize your characters to make them your own?
The way you can customize your characters is through the skill stone system. Each character can equip up to six skill stones and you have a wide range of skills to choose from. There are active skills like special attacks and magic, as well as latent skills that give you additional HP or countering/evasion abilities.
By combining the different skills together, you're able to customize the character to your playing style. For example, you can set up one of your characters to be a tank, with high HP and HP recovery skills. Then, you can have that character draw the attacks while you take out the enemies from afar.
Or, you can have a balanced team to take advantage of the Burning Aura, a system where you gain more power by sandwiching the enemies.
How you want to set up your team is up to you.
What are some examples of the different character classes?
Divided broadly, there are four species—humanoids like humans, dwarves, and elves; Therions, which are human-beast hybrids; monsters such as orcs and dragons; and demons.
Within each species, you have different character classes. For the humanoid and Therions, they range from swordsmen, lancers, axe wielders, mages, as well as bowmen. The type of weapon they wield determines the type of attack, attack range, and mobility. Each weapon has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, a bowman is able to attack from afar, but he lacks any countering abilities, so if the enemy gets right up on them, they are pretty much helpless. There are other weapon types as well, so explore to find out!
I like the idea of medieval warfare, the retelling of the Jeanne d'Arc story mixed with knights, castles, dragons and wizards. However, in the true Jeanne d'Arc story there are no dragons and wizards. Just what is meant by "loosely based on the story of Jeanne d'Arc"?
We mixed a lot of fantasy elements into this game. It's not meant to be a historically accurate account of the Hundred Year's war. So basically, if you're writing a report about the life of Joan of Arc, don't base your information on this game.
We've also put a twist on Jeanne's fate in this game. In real history, she was burned at the stake, but in this game, she has a slightly different outcome. But you'll have to check out the game to find out what happens.
That's it for our Developer Q&A session. Sorry we couldn't get to all of them. But hopefully this gives you a bit more of an insight into Jeanne d'Arc—I hope you guys will like the game! Thanks again.
There is a new dev video also but it'll have to be rehosted, but I bet it will be up soon. >>>It just the FAQ, with the questions being asked and a dev telling the answers.

Great game.
Though I got it right when I got Bioshock and though I still need to finnish off Brave Story, I went ahead and started it last night. I love the art direction, game play, and over all story so far. This might just be my PSP GOTY since I dont think we get FFT:LW this year. Brave Story is/was awesome but this game is what I have been looking for right now. For $30!
IGN gave it a 9/10. (http://psp.ign.com/articles/812/812668p1.html) I've read the review and it is really good! If you want a detailed understanding and run down of the game, check it out.
As I've been playing the review seems to be spot on with what I am experiancing (and enjoying!). The two main knocks I see in the review and the two things I think the game could use more oomph is the music and voice.
Music isn't bad, it is just repeative. It fits well with the scene and everything but it doesn't draw you in. Though it is a tactical RPG so I guess it deserves some slack?
And the voice word is good BUT there isn't enough! Only the cutscenese have voices. The characters do a lot of chattering through out the battles via word bubbles over their heads after certain things happen in the field. I would have like to hear them actually speak.
Then there is also the short "intro speechs" before battles and "in-game cutscenes" (not sure how other to describe them). Again, everything is text and I think real voices would have helped.
Small nitpicks for some on an otherways good game.

Yeah, I have to absolutely recommend you get this game if you like tactical games or jRPGs even a bit. It's one of the best games I've played on PSP!
It really reminds me of Dragon Quest 8. I know it's the same team and everything, so that makes sense. The balance is spot-on (the game is actually challenging!), and the design is tight. Graphics are great. Giles is SO scenester, though. I hate him, his eyeliner, and his 80s hairstyle. He'd fit in at an urban gaybar, maybe, but not so much in Medieval France!
I think they should have maybe thrown a "Tactics" into the title -- this is a specific style of game, and usually these games have "Tactics" in the title to let you know what's inside.

I agree. Just make sure to stick together and have a healer. then just plow your way over. use the archer to pick off the guys and do major dmg to them. for some reason, the kid does more dmg to the enemy than some of my regular sword fighters.

I've been playing it an hour here and there. It's a fairly decent game and was surprised at one part happening that's a rather big spoiler. So really, don't click it unless you have a five slot armlet wielder.
Liane was burned to death at the stake! Not many RPGs seem to let important people die and I was a bit shocked since I wasn't really expecting it to happen.
I wish there were more decisions you could make in the game and they had a little bit more impact on the story. I also need to figure out what Adroit does (I keep forgetting to create it) and get some more HP Recovery III since story battles have been mean to me with drops. After using Two Rounds, I don't think I like it too much unless it's put on an archer or a person with very high evade due to everything hit being countered when it actually works.
I also hate the turn limit for every battle, but without it the game would be far too easy. Thankfully this game doesn't have perma-death when you die in battle or I'd have to rethink my 'sacrifice worthless pawn to win quick' strategies in battle. Except now I don't have anymore empty slots to fit with worthless pawns.
Also, why does Giles have to suck so damn much? I mean I put him in battle since he can take a hit (kinda) but all I use him for is Mobility Up, Heal, and the occasional meat shield to block a character with weaker defense. I mean I still use him to attack occasionally but he just pales in comparison to everybody else.

I pm'd this game at best buy (futureshop was selling it for $26.99 on their website for the labour day sale) and used the $5 off any psp title coupon (they still accepted it, even though it says right on the back that it expired on Aug 31,). It came up to a little over $24CAD.
Speaking as one who doesnt play RTS games (I find them too time consuming), this game converted me to the genre. The production value is amazing, as is the in game graphics. Voice acting is top notch too. I love the fact that I can take this on the go, if it were for a console I would probably not even consider it. So far I am having a blast with it and it deffinately gets heavy usage on long subway rides. I would deffinately reccomend this game to anyone with a psp. If my area is any indication, I dont think the game is selling too well, despite the great reviews :-( .

This game's AI is so much better than I'm used to from FFT/Tactics Ogre.
I had a battle where I couldn't lose a single person, and I've surrounded the last character I had to kill, with an archer and a spellcaster up on a hill nearby bombarding from above. Well on his last turn before I could kill him, he goes and climbs the hill and kills the spellcaster with one hit, when I didn't even realize he had been manuvering into range. Tricky..

I guess I am grinding a bit. That is what I do in these games. My part is no lower than 15. I am also farming for money and those skill thingies. I guess I should advance since Jeanne is over lvl 20 and we just sacked the second city of the Orleans part of chapter 2.

Though I play these types of games rather infrequently, I would have to say it is probably my "best" genre as I'm not a great twitch gamer ;). My only problem is that I tend to get obsessed with them and sink way too much time into them - thus I hold off on playing new ones. (Advance Wars DS took over 100 hours of my life, for example).

don't just lvl up jeanne, in certain lvls later on jeanne wont be included in the battle and you must use your other guys only.
And if they are all weak lvls your gonna get raped.
The same goes for some other characters too.
my advice, pick 4-5 guys you really like and try to keep their lvl within 2-3 of jeanne.
jeanne is always my highest lvl but i always got 4-5 other chars just a little behind her.

I picked up a slim PSP after never owning a PSP just for this game (and to get ready for FF Tactics). I'm loving it so far. The gameplay is a bit shallow (you can't hurt your own teammates and there are no real classes), but I'm still having fun with it. The AI is pretty decent and I like the in-game banter.

Hmm well you have slight classes, in the form of what weapon the characters can use right?

yup. certain characters can use certain weapons which will lock them into certain weapon skills. as for spells (ie. stat booster, and black and white magic) anyone can equip them.

Sometimes when I play, the game just hangs there. For example, the last couple of times, it was waiting for someone to initiate an attack. The music still plays, and the screen automatically slowly rotates around the character over and over again, but nothing happens. I have turn the power on and off in order to get the game to progress and after that it's fine.
Anyone else have this problem?

Ah, that one. For that I did:
Since I didn't have Jeanne equipped with any type of healing gem, I would let her use items every turn she needed. Which used up most of my healing items but thankfully I didn't run out. I sent my party around the right side to the back then transformed with everyone and then pummeled away like crazy and eventually backed him into a wall in the final room which made it pretty easy. Took a few 'hit instead of heal' risks that seemed to work. Remember he's a caster, so try not to keep everyone in a formation his AoE magic will work well if he has any.
I remember I tried to kill him originally by placing mages by the unopenable door and horribly failed with that. It was definitely a tougher fight and about all the advice I can give as I didn't do anything special.

Keep the team together like NamPaehc said or split up into 2 teams. I usually used 2 tanks and a healer/archer per team to keep things running smoothly.
The only thing I don't like about this game is the sheer number of teammates. Juggling a dozen people got to be a chore.

Haven't played it yet but that sounds like one of the things you deal with in the two Fire Emblem titles on the GBA. You get to choose from characters that you pick up on the way. Each tends to have a particular strength. And yes, if you want everyone at somewhat equal levels, it could get tough juggling all of the available characters.

Nice move!
Just finished the game yesterday. The anime cutscenes are very well done and they progress the story nicely. The story was good and it had it's fair amount of twists. The combat is very good. The burning aura and unified defense systems bring some extra strategy into it. Unfortunately, most of the enemies you face are easy enough to beat without the extra damage done by burning aura attacks. It's too bad there isn't another difficulty level to make combat really top-notch. I'd score the game 9 or higher if it was harder but it was a cake walk and that gives it an 8.5. It did make the wait for FF Tactics and Disgaea a little easier though.

I just picked up this game today, and put around two hours into it. I have to say it's much too hard for my taste. Nothing worse for me than battling for 15 minutes just to die and start over from the begining of the fight. Don't worry about losing weapons or armor when someone leaves your party. Thankfully, they leave everything behind. Also, don't worry about leveling up too much since it just makes the game way too easy. I leveled up way too much at the beginning and started to get bored by the end.

You can't explore towns. When you enter a place on the map, you could equip your units with weapons, armor and skills or shop if possible. And on most maps, you could go back to them and level your units. There's also something called
"Free Stages" which have much tougher enemies but have nice drops if you finish the level. There are no random battles, all of it story based.

I think the recommended level is at least 30. I didn't do it until I got right before the last couple levels, so it was hard to say for my experience.
As for traits combining, take a look at the FAQ on Gamefaqs. It list the recipe for all the stuff you need.

Ignore the dragon stage when it first pops up, your probably under leveled. You need at least level 30 +to handle them. It's worth coming back to that stage since all bonus stages nets you some high end equipment. That stage isn't ideal place to level up, dragons have too much health. The best place to level up is smaller stages with weaker enemies. You almost guarantee 3-5 experience per attack. When you add ease of stage and bonus experience you should level up in no time. When you get stronger, slowly move on to harder stages for better stones. Use mages or archers for fast stage runs.
Combining is very easy since they blank out most of possible outcome. Just focus on blue stuff, they are generally the best with stats boost- mp,hp, atk up.

Most of my characters was around level 55 except Jeanne and Richard, both of those are level 70( I overabuse transformation for those characters)

Damn dude. How have you been playing? Strictly brute force?
You just need strong healing spells and your team full of the jewel users so you have plenty of transformations. The super strong spells like earthquake and that lightning storm thing can damage your squad. All I did for the end of the game was wail on the bosses using my transformations and heal people in between then. Hopefully you have picked up the extra jewels along the way so each character has at least 3 transformations.

^^^ It's a fun game. Open it and play it. It may be turn based but you're only working with like 6 or 7 characters on the field at most so turns go quicker. Infact the whole game has a quick pace to it. And it's easy to get into. You don't need to track your stats or anything unless you want to.

Here's what you do. Once you get resident expert theif Collete, you find/create the skill stone that shows the hidden treasure on maps and always ALWAYS FREAKING ALWAYS use him in battle. And if you repeat each map once you'll be fine. The dragons are still going to be really hard to kill so I would jump ahead a few missions in the game before going to fight them. I posted a strategy somewhere in this thread on how to defeat them.

The final boss being all the bosses plus the final boss? Because that's the final boss. And you can't seem to beat them all? Last stage was not hard at all. Figuring out how to beat those four dragons early on was more of a problem than fighting the final boss(s). All you have to do is use all the jewel users (sorry that I forgot their names) and make sure that you finish off bosses with transformed characters so that you can get God Speed. Shit, I had Collette on the map picking up the jewels while the rest of my squad (frog dude, jeanne, jeanne's man, magician, big fuzzy lion dude, boyish looking archer) took on the bosses. I mean granted, I went through all the missions, some even twice to get all the hidden treasure and I had the best of the best when it came to equipment. I had a lot of very good skill stones as well.
I guess people underestimate Collette because he's a little guy. He's the fastest out them all and his robbing ability is hella useful for collecting skill stones and items. Not to mention that he can find treasure and later in the game his poison skill is strong and some of his direct dagger techniques are potent. And don't forget his high critical hit rate which I think there is also a skill stone for to raise even higher. Just let him stab a motherfucker in the back. Watch what happens. And like I've said, if you are using him on EVERY mission he's going to be very strong by the end of the game.

I didn't even bother with Colet. I used Roger, LaHire, Cuisses, Richard, and the 2 archers alot and just went through the game with a little grinding. I did stop to kill the dragons a couple times. Archers become key because they get to avoid the counter attack. I'd just move them close to a tank after attacking so I could take adavantage the Unified Guard.

I had given up on this game, as I couldn't beat Altos Prairie. I 10 fights worth of grinding, and still didn't have an army of 30's, so I said fuck it, and just continued along the story line. I beat the next couple battles due to some stellar play/and luck. Easily my two best battles (for not screwing up, and always making right decision). I leveled up more on those two battles, than the ten grinding battles I did (due to fighting higher level enemies). Then I went back and did Altos Prairie (AP), and it was fairly easy, if you have lots of guys with Cyclone II. I wish I would have done it before
I lost Jean though. Speaking of which, that came as a bit of a surprise.
I was so frustrated by AP, I was ready to trade it in. But after picking it up again, skipping AP, and later beating it, I am even more addicted than before (and I am not an RPG/SRPG fan). I hope this advice prevents frustration for others.

FAQ says you can get it at TOWER OF ALSACE

+=========-----------------------------------------------=========+
VICTORY: Defeat the Qrow Leader
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
DEFEAT : Colet falls in battle
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
TURNS : 40
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
ENEMIES: Qrow Leader, Qrow x2, Qrow Knight x3, Wyvern Lord x1
Frost Demon x1
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
Tips:
You can only bring three characters here and Colet is already a fixed
member. So, I suggest bringing in Jeanne and Gilles. The target of
interest here is the Wyvern Lord that has the skill Mobility +1.
Although its rarity is just 3, that doesn’t mean that this skillstone
is common. Increasing your mobility increases your maximum movement
space so this will be helpful for low MOV characters like your tanks
and archers.
You will need to reach the Qrow Leader by setting up ladders (which
takes 1 turn). Sure you can bring archers instead but remember that
the Qrows have no elevation restriction; thus they can pretty go
wherever they want with ease.
HIDDEN ITEMS:
#1: [13, 11] Just below the 4th ladder

I just recieved a new copy of this game from a CAGer....
Wow! I couldn't put it down for a couple hours! Its great! I wonder why it seems like such a flop, at least in North America?

I've been playing this quite alot even through all the GTAIV and whatnot... It's a very well made game and brings me slightly back to FFT but with a more user friendly interface/system.
so far I am at the part where Jeane wakes up in the swamp forest and trains

I am really glad to see people enjoying this game so far after the fact. Sony should have marketed this game some more.
Hey Rolly.. I hope you don't feel too fucked up about a certain someone dying. I was actually mad as hell. I wanted to break shit and scream. Just ain't right dude. People aren't supposed to die in RPGS!

I got to the part where that one new archer joins you, but I couldn't beat it so I quit :-P

I just got this game from Amazon earlier this week, and I've beaten it already. There is still quite a bit to do in post-game. I found it very easy, mostly as a result of backtracking and going through all the free stages, which makes the main stages a lot easier.
The only hard part so far was the Altois Prairie since that free area pops up a little early for the level, but I just reloaded and came back when my levels were more ready for the game. Also, for a main character, Jeanne is surprisingly weak, and Rufus is insanely strong for a character with almost zero backstory.
I recommend going back to the old stages since you need a lot of skills for binding, and you also find skills on the old stages that you couldn't get the first time. The free stages can also award you powerful skill stones/equipment so that's another reason to go do them.
The game also is pretty shallow, there's nothing unique about characters other than gender/weapon class/armor class. Jeanne/Roger/Cuisse/Liane are all the same except for their transformations. Jean/Gilles are the same, except Gilles has a transformation. Same for Richard/Claire and Rufus/Bartolomeo/La Hire and Marcel/Beatrix

Rufus is good but he's no La Hire. I used Jeanne, Roger, Richard, La Hire, Marcel, and the other archer to beat most of the levels.

Rufus is good but he's no La Hire.
Maybe if your La Hire is way higher in level than Rufus, but if they are equal in level Rufus beats La Hire in almost every area.
Stats naked at max level, copied from darklao's faq:
(Rufus on top, La Hire on bottom)
_HP _MP _ATK DEF ACC MOB MATK MDEF EVA CRIT
1066 362 550 422 350 _4 __302 __205 239 15
_825 197 452 394 316 _4 __304 __303 172 12
As you can see, Rufus wins in every area except Mobility (tie), MATK (losing by only 2), and MDEF, losing by 98, but the fact that he has 241 more HP (29%!!!!) than La Hire more than makes up for that.

I did level up my team pretty well before I got Rufus. I can't deny that Rufus has great stats but he always seemed to miss when I used him. There's nothing worse that a tank that can't hit anything.

You get Rufus and La Hire on your team at the same time, meaning they are the same level.
Your statement doesn't make sense, because Rufus has HIGHER accuracy than La Hire, given the same items/skill stones.

I thought I got Rufus later but it's been at least six months since I've played the game. All I know is that Rufus constantly missed. His stats might be higher but that didn't mean jack when he missed every other time. He was like A-Rod in the playoffs.

you kidding me? Rufus is the strongest guy in the party! I leveled everybody to 99, guess who's the strongest? Rufus... Man, after level 99, Rufus, La Hire, Claire (i didn't get the Victoria Secret girl, she's kinky though) and Colet are unstoppable. I didn't bother with armlet users, the animation bores me now and they are not strong as Colet with 4 hits + Critical Edge, Rufus with three rounds + Critical Edge... Equip Rufus with Godsend and Mobility +3, you can wipe out the enemies in one turn ;)

i take that as a compliment :)
Turn by turn strategy games are my favorite. I believe the very first game i got hooked on was War Song (Genesis). The next one was Vanderhearts (PS1). Then PC's Heroes of M&M (part 3 particularly) Jeanne D'Arc is the latest one got my attention.
Oh, i forgot to mention that Rufus needs to equip Recovery III, HP 300 and Attack +30 (or accuracy +30).

Burning Auroras dude! Also watch out the % hit before confirming the attack. Certain enemy got high evade stat, so Rufus is no good (but hardly a problem after level 90).

No offense, dude. But why are you trying to teach me how to play the game when I've already gone through and beat it without any problems? I understand if I was asking for help or I was admitting to having trouble, then I would appreciate the help. My wife tells me what I do wrong during games plenty, I don't really need another.........
Rufus didn't work for me. I didn't say he was useless. I know he has great stats but every time I put him in my party, he was the weak link. He'd whiff against stronger creatures I needed him to knock out in one swing. When I used La Hire, I could pretty much let him do his thing and never worry about him getting low in HP. He was the perfect tank.

Wow wow, hold it there... I'm simply pointing out why your Rufus is not working in your party. Anyhow, everybody's strategy is different, so whatever is your medicine, fine with me.
If you haven't beat the Colosseum three times, then you haven't beat the game in my book. So yeah, that gives me the bragging right. I don't think you know the feeling of accomplishment for getting HP 300 and every combination to the skill cards...

You're hardcore. We get it. Not everyone has time to finish a game to your hardcore standards. I went through the game and beat all the stages (including the Colosseum) and got most of the skill cards. If that's not good enough for you, oh well.
I played the game because I love SRPGs and the premise was new and original. I didn't play the game to get bragging rights on a video game forum. You're probably going to be offended by this and that's probably a good thing. You want everyone to give you props for being the best at this game and you probably are. That doesn't mean there aren't other ways of beating this game.
Like I said, I went through the entire game without using Rufus once. Does that give me "hardcore" points because I didn't use the most powerful character? Can other people that read this thread also shun Rufus and win? Yes.

Dude.. life is short, this is one game i actually "wasted" so many hours on it (it beats Puzzel Quest in terms of playing time). A win is a win, i don't care if it's hardcore or not. I'm just saying, if you haven't try Rufus with GodSpeed, i.e. beating a stage with one turn, then you're missing some fun there.
I'm so done with the hardcore crap... i played this to the "max" cause i liked it, i wanted to. I'm not offended or anything. Like i said, if you're happy with your ending, fine by me.
However, if somebody point out something new in this game that i haven't try yet, i'm all ears... I like to say i'm no hardcore (Gear of War, i beat it on casual and that's it, total COGs collected were about four?)
There's no hardcore in my book, just how much you like the game, that's about it! If you're good in one game, that doesn't make it hardcore. What's pissy is that, people complaint about things when they're not even aware there are solutions for them.

rufus loses in the most important area: badassitude
la hire was much more amusing and he didn't have a speech impediment. the only time i found rufus funnier was when he and marcel the boy archer were crying and colete is saying, "this is why i don't have kids or dogs!"

Monster bump. :)
Is there a way for me to know what would be more effective? An attack or a spell? I just played level 12, chapter 2 and I won, but barely. I was often torn between using a spell or using an attack. Any thoughts without spoilers, please. :)

when you target the enemy with the spell or attack, it shows you how much damage it will incur.
on a side note, i never noticed that after you beat the game, you can play all the Free Combat zones with enemies that are EXTREMELY harder than before. Did anyone beat every landmark the 2nd time around? I'm starting from the first stages and working my way east to west, working on the 2nd time through the Coliseum.

I put down this game (some time ago) pretty early on the campaign. I should pick this up again and try to get a lot of grinding/story missions out of the way before the fall semester starts all over again.

There's something really addicting about this game to me. It's not addicting in the sense that I've got to play for hours on end, but more in the sense that I keep playing it a little at a time. My last completed mission, chapter 2 of level 12 was fantastic. And they've all been that way. Very balanced. I don't feel hopeless that I can't win but I'm not so sure that I can, either. It's so well thought out, with the enemies just one block away from my attacks, etc.
I love Level 5's stuff.

I just quoted this post because the OP mentioned Warsong in his post. That game also got me into SRPGs. He doesn't mention Shining Force 1/2 which were also on the Genesis and were both pretty good.
When it comes to buying a system, I usually wait until the system has been out for a while and it has a decent library of games. The game that made me buy the PS1 was Vandal Hearts. :D

I did the same thing. I put this game down for Fire Emblem on the DS. As soon as I finish FE, I'll be sure to fire up the PSP and continue playing it. I really like this game but Fire Emblem... I just love that series.

I've been stuck on the level where You first get Jeane back after her "death" and you have to fight with just her and Giles. Never came close to beating that one and haven't touched the game in probably a year.
