How do I specifically tell which GBA Sp's have the backlit screen? Do they have specific colors? I tried finding this on Google but I couldn't find anything specific.

All GBA sps have backlit screen. There are some newer ones that have a brighter screen. It says on the box brighter screen if so.

The brighter screen is what I meant to say. If I'm buying used, besides turning it on, how can I tell?

incorrect, the earlier GBASP has frontlit screen which are not as good.

I know the pearl blue and graphite SPs use the brighter screen.
The straight onyx black and deep blue SPs have the darker one.
I am pretty sure anything not the first two will be the darker one, but someone else probably knows.

If your buying it new, the easiest way to tell is that right on the front of the box it says "NEW BRIGHTER SCREEN!" ;)

Go with Strells advice then and get one thats pearl blue or graphite.
also, they should let you turn it on in store, you can tell right away which screen it has.
Of course the OP probably mentioned that he wants to buy it online and I missed that too. =p

I'm actually looking here to trade my micro for one. I love the micro but I'd like to play older GB stuff too.

Cobalt (dark blue), Onyx (jet black), Flame (red), and Platinum will have the weak frontlit screen.
Pearl Blue (light blue), Graphite (dark gray), Pearl Pink, and the Pikachu edition will all have the bright backlit screens.
