Then did you research what Linux was at all before you decided to give it a try? You picked a non-beginner distro, wanted to not have to build/compile anything, and were surprised when Windows games didn't run. Are you SURE you're not trolling?

Wait a minute there is a user friendly version of linux?
If you want to install something try Mandrake. Otherwise, look into a live CD like Knoppix.
Edit: but really, if you're not looking for a hobbyist OS and you don't know a specific reason to be using it you probably shouldn't use it.

Every OS has its ups and downs, i've never had the opertunity to use linux but as far as I know it alows for alot more freedom for its knowledgeable users(the advanced builds?) My favorite OS will always remain Mac Os 9 but since support and software has gone from nearly nothing to absolutly nothing, it was time to move on. XP is nice because I can play all the games I want but its not nice to deal with viruses and spyware and all that crap. I hear there are a few nasties for mac OSX now and that there will probaly be more but for good old 9 theres about nothing that will muck up your computer.
Can someone please tell me what is so much better about linux besides that it isn't microsoft? I just don't get it...
Cost, freedom to customize it (because of the open source,) security, stability. It's great for servers but isn't ready for the average desktop yet, so don't worry about not "getting" it. Stick with MS or Mac for now.

Yes it is, so you'd have to compare it to, like, Windows Datacenter edition or something, which costs ass-lots more.

Well you know that that is who does the tech support. Everytime I have been on the phone with tech support is is some indian or chinese guy with a heavy accent. It is because companies reroute tech support phone calls to outside the us (Usually india or china) because it is much cheaper since they can pay foreigners less. It is sad really...

10 to 1 they speak better English than you do Indian or Chinese, but yeah, you're right, their accents DO demand the use of ethnic slurs against them.

I would highly doubt that Red Hat would send your call to India. IBM does not and they are much much bigger (just using them as reference since based out of same location). Red Hat is a pretty small company here in the Triangle.

There are numerous different dialects spoken in India and I can't differentiate between, say, Panjabi or Hindi or Urdu, so I'm going with a catchall. Sorry if it blows your mind, but them's the breaks.

Just because they aren't continuing the RedHat Linux Community edition development doesn't mean they don't offer it. RedHat 9.0 is still downloadable through RedHat.com or one of its mirrors. Getting RedHat 10 Professional, or whatever its called, requires a license to get. The Fedora project sort of took over RedHat's free linux distributions. I have Fedora Core 2 installed on my machine now and I really don't like it. Then again, I didn't like older RedHat releases either. If I was better with Linux, I'd try to install Debian again. But I'm not, so I'll go back to Mandrake.

You my friend are an idiot (and I don't use that term lightly).
Ever heard of something called WINE? You can use that to play some, not all, of your Windows games. As mentioned before, get a newbie distro and things are easier. Try something like Suse. It's a fully graphical installation and it auto-detected all of my hardware.
Another thing- don't blame your ignorence on the OS. Just because you don't know how to do something on an OS you just installed doesn't mean it sucks. The main purpose behind Linux is it being open source and stability. Linux hardly ever crashes and thus lends itself rather well to servers. As for the open source, since you don't like it you can make it exactly how you want it. Have fun doing that with Windows.
If Windows works for you, use it. Hell why were you even installing Linux if it did work?

I think he did. I got the same "dos prompt" when I first installed slackware.
Dragonlordfrodo
07-09-2004, 06:01 PM
The dos prompt said "Local host login" or something so I typed Administrator, then a password prompt came up and I typed in my password, and when I typed my password, I guess linuxs way to protect you is not to show you are typing at all. It took me a while to figure out that you have to put Root as a login instead of administrator. BTW I can take a pic of me holdiong up the CDs if you want proof

Read my blog?! WTF?! Are you too lazy to post it? OK, so I read your post. And you know what? You my friend have a brain the size of a dehydrated raisin. That's Lehman for small and implies stupidity and ignorance.
Linux does not need 3 cd's. Linux is just the kernel. It can be as big or as small as you like. It can fit on a floppy disk (1.44 MB) or it can be bigger, but "Linux" does not take up 3 cd's. What those 3 cd's contained was all the bloody software in the world. Word Processing, Email, Internet, Music, Video, Apache, Sendmail, Squid, Instant Messaging, CD/DVD Burning, Ripping/Encoding Tools, Multiple Windows Managers such as KDE, GNOME, Window Maker (My Favorite), Fluxbox, and many many more. The list is nearly infinite.
Admitting to software piracy just shows how stupid and ignorant you really are. That is just low. You could have gotten another distro that did not cost money or had a free trial or live cd. I love your excuse for stealing. Low blow and pitiful excuse. What are you 10 years old? Or is that over estimating? Oh, and scrolling down you blog I see something of the like, movies to download? What is lower? Stealing cheap $.25 software. Or Linux stealing $750 + so that you can talk to some dude in india who can't speak good english. And I don't want to hear that "They speak better english than I do Arabic" because they shouldn't even be talking to me! $750 I should be speaking with the CEO of Linux. Also, we are americans. Have you ever tried to google for window help? OMG the results suck and the MS site while helpful normally is some long explanation and pages of reading to figure out HOW to fix or change something.
With open-source you have to learn to change and manipulate the OS to your liking. Some noob distros go a long way to helping you with that but it's still NOT windows and it's NOT meant to be. Linux is different but imho ..it's a world better than Windows.

With open-source you have to learn to change and manipulate the OS to your liking. Some noob distros go a long way to helping you with that but it's still NOT windows and it's NOT meant to be. Linux is different but imho ..it's a world better than Windows.
Wow those are supposed to be the best games for linux? It isn't saying much. All those games suck...
Quake, Unreal, Counter-Strike...oh you know..those shitty boring games.
You noob...you are really asking for the flaming.
Please just go away before your ignorance makes the universe implode. Your brain is a like a black hole where everything get sucked into a void never to be seen again. How about you get a clue?

Why did you wait 200+ posts before this implosion into terrible trolling?

$750 I should be speaking with the CEO of Linux.
You my friend are either blind or... no, you must be blind.
Open source! Do you even know what that means?
Sure, you should be able to speak to Americans. Too bad we're so greedy we outprice ourselves. I'll give you a hint though, when I called the XP line to get another authorization code because I've formatted so much, guess who I was talking to?

What is lower? Stealing cheap $.25 software. Or Linux stealing $750 + so that you can talk to some dude in india who can't speak good english. And I don't want to hear that "They speak better english than I do Arabic" because they shouldn't even be talking to me! $750 I should be speaking with the CEO of Linux. Also, we are americans. I think we deserve to speak with an american at tech support. I am tired of talking to apu with a thick accent that you have to struggle to listen to. It is racist in any shape or form, it is just that I want to talk to someone that I can actually understand. Anyone else agree?
Sorry logandx, but this post receives my weekly award for not making any sense.
Since when is providing a service for money "stealing"?
Linux is an operating system, not a company. There's no "CEO of Linux".
You can download most linux distributions online for free, or get them from cheapbytes.com and make as many copies as you want.
Americans cost more to hire. Would you absorb the extra cost?
$750 for one year of support vs. $1250 for one year of support with no accent. Which one would you pick? Which one would your employer pick?

That is why I try to use tech support sparingly

Oh dear. Hath thy thread turned into a topic debated for centuries: Linux vs Windows.
I'm not experienced enough to actually use Linux. Well, I COULD install it if I wanted to, but I'm too lazy. x_x

Holy crap! First off, you didn't pay the $750 and call tech support to even know if their tech support is indeed outside of the country, just an assumption you are making. Many of Dell's tech support calls do indeed go to India, which I don't agree with but I'm not going to make racist remarks about that. But just because Dell's support is outside of this country doesn't mean Red Hat's (or Linux's as you would refer to it) is. Additionally Linux is open source that means no "CEO of Linux", maybe Red Hat has a CEO but not Linux. Secondly there are tons of free distros out there that you can try, not everything is $750, some are much cheaper, some are free. The point is Linux is not like Windows there are all sorts of ways it can be customized and the companies releasing the customization can charge as much or as little as they want, but that does not have any bearing on the price of "Linux." Linux is free, the support is not always free and the customized package is not always free.

Linux is used for two reasons.. you really like Unix but are too much of a cheapass to get the real deal.. or you're a "non-conformist who hates MS". It's used to show off geekiness, nothing more.
And yes, it does suck.

Nonsense. Linux has virtually endless practical applications thanks to the nature of it's open source. More than Unix, certainly. And why would you criticize people for wanting the best price to performance ratio on a site dedicated to it? Sure, there are people who use it as a nerd status symbol, but it's foolishness to write it off because of that or to say it sucks because you have no want, need or proficiency to use it.

I spent three years as a Unix Systems Administrator, I have two SGI boxes, an HP-UX box, a SUN box and a Linux box in my basement. I have proficiency, and I have experience. The OS is extremely, extremely over-rated, and I stand by every word of my original post.

Those are the exact reasons why many Fortune 500 companies waste their time using Linux for mission critical servers. They think it sucks.
Just because it does not have a gui does not mean it sucks or is used only for geekiness. First time I installed Linux was about 6 - 7 years ago (Slackware ISO downloaded over a modem). I did it then. Did not think it was hard and it has only gotten easier.
Halo on linux?! Hahahahahaha! Hehehehehe! Hohohohohoho!
Sorry.

Since you are a Unix guy and seem knowledgeable...what's your opinion on FreeBSD? And I agree that linux is an overrated Unix wannabe mostly because I think the multiple distros actually hurt it. imho

I thought linux was just a general term for an open source OS.
I mean, there are hundreds of different linuxes, the most well known being mandrake and red hat.
Its just a geek think, and I prefer not to get involved. Windows XP is the only OS that has never crashed on me so I am not likely to swith anytime soon.
