I heard about this game earlier on Kotaku, and it looked interesting. Here's the rundown:

It's basically a puzzle game with a storyline and RPG elements. The game plays out like Bejewelled, only turn-based. You and your opponent take turns trying to line up 3 like icons on the playing field. Lining up 3 skulls does damage to your opponent, lining up 3 piles of gold gives you more money, 3 purple stars give you more exp, and 3 multicolored icons give you magic points towards casting spells. You can also buy weapons, armor, and other equipment to help you out in battle.

Here's a trailer for the game:

I d/led the PC demo (http://www.gamedaily.com/canvases/gd/_a/download-puzzle-quest-demo/20070315101009990002) and was hooked for the past few hours, and I plan to pick up the DS version asap.

Yea, the review on Gamestop made this look a lot better than I thought (with such a generic title, there ain't much to expect). They're sayin the DS version's a bit messed up tho, hard to read bottom screen play kinda worries me...If anyone could give their impression, thatd be cool!

I played the PC for a few hours two nights ago and decided to pick up the DS version yesterday.

For the first ten minutes I felt like I should have stuck with the PC version. There's no doubt that the DS version looks worse but that shouldn't really come as a surprise.

After that initial ten minutes (and you may not even have an issue if you've never played the PC demo) everything was fine. Yes, the font is small but there should be no problem reading the text.

IMO, the interface works really well with the stylus - just know that it's easier to make an illegal move with the stylus than clicking a button.

The illegal move thing is more frustrating that anything else - you lose your turn and that can smart when you leave a four-in-a-row there for your opponent.

The sound is really nice and the graphics aren't too bad. The art style reminds me of Fire Emblem with the portraits being really nice. Again, the puzzle board doesn't compare to the PC version but it gets the job done.

After playing the DS version yesterday for about 4 hours I can honestly say that this has the potential to be my fave DS ever. I feel like it was made just for me.

The multi-player game is multi-cart local which is a bit of a bummer but too be honest I'm not sure that I can imagine playing this multi-player anyway.

Also, the DS version has two save slots for those of you who share a DS.

The reviews I've read seem to think the PSP version is slightly better (load times vs. clunky touch screen interface). I'm not sure version to buy, since I have both consoles, and someone told me they had encountered a bug in the PSP version (something about companions not working).

I've been hooked on the PC version for most of the week, and I've already ordered the DS version. Really looking forward to it.

I've always liked Bejeweled as a chillout game, but it's always been very shallow. Puzzle Quest really adds that extra strategic depth to make it a very satisfying experience.

According to the developer's forums, the PSP version shipped with a bug that means your companions don't work at all. A minor flaw, but still another reason to opt for the DS version.

The feature list of the PC demo seems like a pretty strong implication that there'll be a PC version before long, but the developer's remaining pretty tight-lipped about it. Chances are it'll go ahead if the portable versions sell well.

There's also rumours of a XBL Arcade version in the works, but that's largely unsubstantiated.

This game had a strange release. I preordered it from Amazon on January 31st. On release date, March 20th, Amazon said they wouldn't have Puzzle Quest until the 29th. And then it shipped yesterday. Still Amazon sucks because I won't receive it now until at least Monday. Maybe they didn't make a lot of copies. I really enjoyed the PC demo though, and if you have any interest in an RPG/Puzzle/Stategy hybrid you owe it to yourself to at least try the demo.

That, coupled with the fact that I don't know anyone else with a PSP for multi-player, means I'll be picking up the DS version. Now, do I use the BB coupon, or wait for Target's DS sale on Sunday?

Someone sent me the link for the PC demo of this last week and I was hooked at first sight. I love the way the RPG portions are done particularly. The graphics are simple but very appealing too. I don't know if it will be hard to find or not. Once I found out it was out I immediately went on gamestop's site to see if any nearby had it in stock. According to Gamestop no stores within 200 miles of me had any copies in. Knowing the site is often unreliable I went out today looking for it anyway and grabbed the last DS copy at an EB an hour away or so.

Is anyone else having an occasional problem with the DS thinking you made an 'illegal move' on occasion? The control doesn't quite seem spot-on.

Problem two: when resuming a saved game, the difficultly always resets to normal.

Still, the concept of fighting through a bejeweled type game is great.

This sounds interesting.. but when Nintendo Power's overly generous reviews give it a 5, I have a hard time getting interested. While I'm not yet sold on this game yet (gonna try the PC demo at some point, an wait for a $20 price), the NP review gave it a 5 because the reviewer hates Bejeweled, and doesn't think the RPG elements are very deep (which is probably true). And obviously if you think Bejeweled is boring as hell, you wouldn't want a turn-based Bejeweled.

On one hand, the game is already reduced to being available at every OTHER gamestop, which is a good sign.

On the other hand, nothing this publisher has previously printed has become rare, but could be partially due to them printing mediocre games

I've been enjoying this game. Yes, the PC demo spoiled me with it's gigantic screen, but I still love the DS version. I usually just sit down play a round, take a break and come back after awhile.
The roleplaying aspects are quite nifty. I built a dungeon and forge already. I even got my skeptical boyfriend interested in it.

I'm officially obsessed with this game. I got it a couple days ago, and I've been up every night until 4am playing it. There's a lot more to do in the game, then appears at first glance. I just built my siege factory so I can start taking over towns now, got a forge to make weapons, can capture enemies, train my mount, and do lots of sidequests. I think for now I'm going to level up a bit. I want to capture some cities, and they're like 5 levels higher than me...

You shouldn't have to go all bitchy, though... it seems like it should be pretty straight forward :/ But I know what you mean... I did a PM for FF3 at Best Buy yesterday... didn't know it would be such an ordeal for everyone!

I called the two Targets nearby this morning, just to check, and it's a no go around here... it seems odd that this game is so hit and miss at the major retailers... My last hope is if Walmart has it and I can PM there. Otherwise, I'm going to have to decide if I want to wait or go retail....

I'm guessing you mean the blocks with x2 or some other number on them. Those can only be matched with colored gems. Not skulls, stars or gold.

Hmm... according to the current news on Penny Arcade, Tycho said he was hunting for a copy of Puzzle Quest, and an EB he went to had already boxed them up and sent them back to corporate because they weren't selling.

Really enjoying this game!
This is the reason I enjoy this system so much! Once again the DS proves to me that I enjoy "games" not graphics. Games that are a little outside the normal realm of things. What a great concept. It has that "i'll just play one more!" aspect and then, next thing you know your battery is dead on the DS. I picked it up at MSRP because it seems to be already hard to find. I plan on heading back to Target today to pick another up for my nephew. Just thought I'd chime in, if you're on the fence about this game I really recommend it!

I checked all around my town on Tuesday, but couldn't find the game anywhere, so I ordered it off of Amazon with the free shipping delay. I happened to check Best Buy's website today (my hand was shaking because I didn't play the PQ demo last night), and the stores around me suddenly had it in stock. I just picked it up 45 minutes ago. There were only 3 copies on the shelf. Needless to say, I've cancelled my Amazon order.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is this: if you couldn't find it earlier this week, check again. It may have come in with this week's shipment. No luck at Target for me, though.

Finally, tonight, I will pass level 7!

If what Penny Arcade reported is true, that's assinine. Then again, they might be sending excess copies to other stores where the game is selling better. I can't believe they'd send them back to the published in less than a week. That's crazy talk.

I had a fairly hard time finding it, too. I was going to try Target 1st, because there are 2 which are have the distance as Best Buy in relation to where I live, but none of them had it in stock. They could have been sold out, but based on everything else they probably didn't get many to begin with.

Finally found it at Best Buy, there was only 1 copy and it was hidden in some SpongeBob games, one of the guys there had to find it for me.

It was worth the trip, though - the marked-down Castlevania DoS have supposedly gone back up to 19.99, but they still had the 9.99 price up on the display so I grabbed another for any CAG's who might have missed out.

The exact same thing happened to me w/ Kirby's Avalanche back in the day. Me and my friends got so addicted, we'd get home from school and play from about 2pm til 5:30pm, the 3 of us trading off to the winner. This happened daily for what was probably months, and when I'd go to sleep all I'd see was the blobs and null blobs falling and spinning.

I recall something similar happening with Starcraft. I'm kinda glad I don't have the same amount of time to invest in games anymore, but man, those were the days.

I had some trouble with some of the enemies, so I lowered the difficulty to see what it would do. The 'easy' level has really dumb enemies. They dont 'see' 4 and 5 piece matches that often, and will often leave a 3 skull matchup on the playfield and go for something else instead. So if you cant beat a guy after a few tries, lower the difficulty to easy and you shouldnt have a problem.

I captured two cities close by each other and walked back and forth on a slow mount while I was watching some TV. In the end I think I made about 100k gold (had to put down a rebellion or two), and then dumped it all into the temple or whatever to boost my skills to ridiculous levels. Pretty nice, though by the date my character is now like 46 years old if he started when he was 20.

Comments like these have me even more wary about starting a game, as well as making all of my homework/reading assignments/other unfinished DS games give a collective shudder.

As long as it stays sealed, I can't thumb through the manual and eventually start playing. I have a feeling I'm going to lose sleep to this one, and I'm just not ready for that yet.

Well shit, it's actually the top selling DS game of this week now, again, per Amazon.

1. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (D3 Publisher)
2. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo)
3. Brain Age (Nintendo)
4. Mario Kart DS (Nintendo)
5. Big Brain Academy (Nintendo)

http://gonintendo.com/?p=15370

FYI, EB sells this for $20 used, so as soon as someone trades it in, I'm on it.that list looks like a juxtaposition of this month's sales with this month's sales last year.

I've only played a wizard, and was having a tough time on normal. Think I'm going to have to step up the difficulty, because after you get a few spells the game is WAY easy.

Hand of Power X2 + fireball skulls = EASY VICTORY.

Plus later you get a spell that turns green = skulls and blues = red, if you see a 4 in a row. use the spell and by the time you have it you have decent battle and fire mastery, you'll get a ton of damage a quite a few free turns.

sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, I'm a 32 Knight. When you hit 20 with Knight and get the ability to double the purple stars, there's a great exp combo you can do.

Wear the one helm that double exp collected in play, cast "Stun" to give you two turns (and do a little damage), then "Knight Lord" to double the purple stars, then "Divine Right" to collect all the purple stars for yourself. You just need 12 of all the manas but red (5 of those I think) to pull it off. You can end up with over 100 exp per battle easy if you just do that once a battle when the field gets a good amount of purples built up.

The only thing that pisses me off is the game's tendency to drop in skulls at the top of the screen. If there are 2 skulls near the top, chances are that a 3rd will drop into place for your opponent's combo if you make a move. It's just something else to think about while planning my strategy.

My area must just be odd. Every EB and Best Buy within 10 miles has it in stock. I didn't see a placeholder for it at Target though.

I decided to get it yesterday, and checked store availability for all the GS/EB within 20 miles. Three of them had it, and only two listed more on the way. The first that was listed as having some turned out not to have any.

I called the second store and they had one left. I've not seen it at Best Buy, although it seems that every Target has about 3.

I haven't played much yet, though am already thoroughly addicted. Level 7 Druid and climbing.

i just cast a spell when i want to do that

I use a couple of spells that require certain colors of mana to stay above a certain number so I tend to use spells sparingly, Id rather have the mana to keep my other spell effects going.

Besides that Im such an 'rpg resource hoarder' by habit, that I find myself hardly ever casting spellls. Then I do this thing where I can see that the board is running out of moves and may soon reset, so I start spamming my spells so I can uise all my mana before I lose it, lol.

I love it when there are two available moves that both look good -- like two sets of skulls that could be matched -- and you pick one and it does okay.

Then the computer inevitably picks the other, chains once, twice, three times, skulls tumble in from the top, and the whole mess deals you massive damage.

But, it's such a good game that I let out a few curses and come back for more.

I don't have my game with me right now, but I think when you have a rat as your mount.. it says it give syou the spell Rabid Bite and also increases...I think your cunning +1? It says something like and additional +1 for every 4 levels?

(Thats obviously not verbatim lol) I THINK it means for every 4 levels, your rat will give you +1 cunning. So Level 1 Rat = +1 Cunning. Level 4 = +2 Cunning. Level 8 = +3 Cunning..etc?

That's how I look at it, and haven't paid too much attention to that. Hopefully someone who knows exactly what it means can confirm this.

This game.. is just amazing. Anyone else working on 2 files at the same time? I'm mainly using a Knight who is about Level 20 now, but I also have my second file as a Level 4 Wizard (..well, Witch). I just wanna do as much as I can and see as much as I can. So whatever my Knight doesn't do, I'll have my Witch do it :)

I havent had any freezes yet. I dont even get that sound loop bug that some have reported.

My biggest gripe with the game so far is in the retarded pathfinding. I'll click on a location thats 3 points away, and my guy will take a circular route thu 7-8 other points to get to the same place. And of course he runs into creatures by going that way. Its gotten soo annoying that now I just hold his hand and click on the next point along my path, then repeat until I get to where Im going.

Thats what Ive been hearing as well. People are giving themselves 255 in every stat. Thats why the game is completely broken for multiplayer. It comes down to whoever goes first, cos with the right items and maxed stats you can one hit kill anyone .

The only was to have fair multiplayer is for both players to use brand new, level 1 characters.

Yeah, the multiplayer mode was questionably implemented, but I think most of us love the game for the single player mode anyway.

This will give them something to work toward in the sequel: better multiplayer focus with wifi-enabled play (not likely in a third party game, but I can dream).

I know I posted this in the PSP version forum, but I just downloaded the demo and wasted (in a good way) about 5 hours on it. I am so addicted to this game, I have to buy it. However, I'm not sure whether I want the PSP or DS version.

I like the stylus controls on DS, and the effects on PSP (from videos I've seen) seems to make it a little bit difficult to see what happened when the icons disappear and fall.

Yeah that only happens to me when Im playing on a moving bus or train. lol

Okay, I noticed something about the game. The puzzles arent random at all, theres only a few of them. And even the drops from above are the same every time. I started to notice that every 3-4 battles, I would get the same starting grid. The one that made me notice this starts out with a 3 skull vertical match near the bottom left corner. This board also starts out with 3 yellow manas in an 'L' shape in the top right corner.

I know its the same board, and the drops are the same cos I can get the same combo every single time. I match the 3 skulls in the lower left, then hopefully the cpu wont match the red mana vertical match near the top left. Cos if you hit that one, you get two 3-skull drops that match up, including a firey skull. Ive done this a dozen times at least so I know for a fact that its the same exact puzzle every time.

There cant be more than 4 or 5 puzzles total. Of course they will play out differently depending on the matches you and the cpu make, but they all start out the same, which makes repeatable early match combos possible.

If you're having illegal move issues, you might also try recalibrating your screen.

Does this happen only when you have just started, or do you get this board even after playing for a while? I think the game is set to use the same board every time you turn it on, but after that it seems pretty random, to me at least.

I'll play for 4 hours straight without powering down, and I'll see that same board every 4-5 fights. So its a reoccuring thing.

It's a glitch:
http://www.infinite-interactive.com/InfiniteForums/viewtopic.php?t=412

Also, I'm pretty sure I'm at the end of the game. Just doing some sidequests first before plowing down the final boss. I'm level 44.

Also, the spell resistance percentage is bullshit. Every time I try to hit someone with 20% resistance, it's always resisted. Bull shit.

And it sucks about that glitch. Although as was pointed out in link... it would make spell research easier. :)

And I too hate it when the displays stay on the screen too long in timed games. I cant level up my mounts anymore cos I cant see the board! >(

But, I still love this game.

i found an awesome way to power level with my knight, its 100% lockdown once you have enough mana (stun, vigil, knight lord) as long as there is a good chunk of exp stars on screen this is guaranteed uber exp, easily got 400 per match, but then any skulls not transformed by knight lord accidentally kills my opponent

I love the game, but I feel like the whole town sieging is imbalanced. You can get a few grand per minute if you siege three towns in a triangle and then just go from one to other, and then when you use that gold to buy skills you become way stronger than you should. My level 17 Knight took out a level 40-something Flame Dragon pretty easily... and my stats were higher than his.

Also, Wizards suck hardcore. So awful. Bad spells, bad stats. The other three classes are somewhat balanced, but Wizards are ridiculously awful.

Now I have a week to do a schoolwork fest before I start Mother 3 again. Going to be playing it, the legit Japanese GBA cart, annually on its release date until the fuckers release it here. This could be a while...

I just lost a Godlike forge at 20 anvils (out of 21). I never thought a puzzle game would be capable of making me this emotional. I was at 17, then got an awesome Heroic Effort that cascaded three anvil matches, brought into the heavens only to burn and crash.

I have no desire to play at all right now, with dreams crushed, but I know this Puzzle Quest burnout is only going to last a couple minutes.

any tips on forging? forgery? forgering? im like level 49 and never tried iti think forging is really hard. i think researching spells is 10x easier.

with forging, i have the most luck just working on clearing the board until there's a few (3-5) anvils on the board. i work them close to each other until i can put three of them in a row. next easiest is to blow one up with a red skull, and every now and then i clear one with a 4-set. i've never gotten more than one anvil with the 4-set so i don't try for those very much. hope that helps. if you have to clear something that takes more than 12 or 15 anvils, you just kind of have to be lucky. i get more "no more moves possible" with forging than anything else.

Forging is all about Stupid Luck. It's worthwhile to do though, as you can get some sick and powerful items.

I think right now I'm using a Tome of Fire, which is +6 to Cunning, +18 to starting Red Mana. It's pretty nice.

take more time on your turns and see if you're setting up any skulls for him. being able to flaming skulls and have the next turn is very powerful. if you some combination of 4 red/blues or skull/greens then cast it and set up chains of 4s. also you can use web (spider mount) to make sure you get the next turn after flaming skulls also.

The way I got through some of the tougher guys was to make sure I took away their most needed mana on my turns, even giving up things I may need. And, as a wizard, doing mana drains. Takes away their ability to do major harm, heal, etc. Then just hack away at them when the opening is there.

I lost a few times to Dugog before I changed strategy. I chose equipment that augmented damage whenever I did damage; instead of doing 5 damage for lining up 3 skulls, I could get 10 or 11. This helped a lot.

It also seemed to help by going after gold if I had no really good move. Dugog gets an extra turn for matching gold, and you can't stop him all the time, but letting him have it all resulted in too many free turns for him.

I actually prefer Erik's bow to the Firewalker.

The bow does: Adds +1 damage per 5 levels whenever you deal 3 or more.

Since I blow through red mana like it's nothing (love you, fireball), the bow will add more damage over time, and be more consistent.

firewalker's staff is really awesome for wizards

Just got that last night. I was using Erik's Bow and the Great Axe (50% chance of another turn if you do 3 or more damage) before that.

You guys had me all scared about Dugog. I beat him in three tries (I think I was still using the Great Axe, which probably helped). And that third time wasn't even all that stressful. I'm using a level 21 wizard riding a level 9 griffon.

I've done a considerable amount of forging and it's not THAT hard. I find learning spells from captives to be more difficult. There's nothing worse than having all but one of the categories satisfied and then running out of moves. Compared to that, getting 3 or 4 anvils is a cinch. What are your favorite forged items? I just made a Manual of Fire (or Tome of Fire, can't remember which) that gives 12 red mana (!!!) at the beginning of each match.

I answered a post about how to beat the "two-headed ogre", which I thought was a different 2 headed ogre than Dugog. (Now I can't remember if that exists or what it was called...)

Well, then I realized the person *was* talking about Dugog and I hadn't beaten him yet. Beat him last night in 1 try as a level 17. Surprisingly, using the same strategy I posted about.
