Scractched PSP

For the PSP, is the top layer screen (where it is scratched like crazy) a LCD screen? Or is the top layer just a protective plastic face plate?

In any case, how easy is it to replace the screen on a psp?

I have never done it personally , but I have seen sights online that sell facelplates & the process didn't look that complicated.
