View Full Version : Can a DS connect to Nintendo WiFi via a Wii?
Have anyone tried it? Is it possible? I have my Wii connected to a wireless router using WPA. As far as I know DS does not support WPA. Can DS still go 'online' via the Wii as a AP?

Since the Wii doesn't output a signal, no.
Of course, that's just a random guess and i'm probably wrong

If your worried about securing your wireless connection, just make it so only certain MAC addresses can access the connection. Any device which isn't on the list won't even be able to see the connection.
I know DS can connect to Wii since some upcoming Wii games are said to be able to use the DS' touchpad as a game controller. The question is wether DS can connect to the internet through a Wii.
Regarding securing a wireless connection. Yes, you can easily setup MAC address filtering to permit only your own devices to connect. However, this doesn't stop hackers to 'sniff' your wireless packets. That's where encryption comes into place. WEP is weak and can be broken rather effortlessly. WPA with a long, good key is very hard to break.

The DS connects to the Wii via bluetooth, which to my knowledge is not a valid internet connection sharing protocol. Controlling something in Pokemon/getting a DS Demo (as is rumored to happen) both get done via bluetooth.
And, as Scorch said, the Wii does not act like an AP in any way. Theoretically someone could release a USB device that did just that, but for right now, none exists.
These things point to the DS not be able to connect via a Wii to the 'net.
Now if the Wii is connected to a router wirelessly, then you'd probably be in range if your DS was close, but it would still be getting the connection from the router. And if you had the LAN adapter and connected the Wii to the net through it, it still wouldn't create a wireless signal for a DS.

Pretty sure the DS doesn't have Bluetooth, so it wiil use the Wifi Radio to connect to the Wii. My guess is that the Wii will act as an access point of sorts for some games.
Bluetooth can be used for networking purposes. You can network 2 PCs together with Bluetooth for example. Also my cell phone has internet access, so I can connect my laptop to it via Bluetooth and get internet on my laptop through the phone. The wireless connection itself is just a pipe, you can set up whatever protocol for communication you want over it.
I seem to remember hearing that the Wii could act as an access point for the DS back before its release.
Also you can get the Nintendo Wifi USB Connector and hook it to your PC which will allow the DS and the Wii to connect. Be warned that it's range is significantly less than most wireless access points.

I don't think the DS has bluetooth...
