Both are $20, so if I were to play one MMORPG (one or the other, neither is not a valid answer) on the Xbox 360, which one should it be?

EDIT: Notable game differences listed below

FFXI
$12.95 monthly fee
6GB HD space required
Large gameworld, population shared with PS2, PC players
Keyboard is essential

PSU
$9.95 monthly fee
Minimal HD space for game saves, potential for downloadable content
Servers restricted to Xbox 360 players ONLY
Group voice chat with six-player party

PSU is more pick up and play, FFXI takes some dedication.

I put 6 months into FFXI when it was originally released on PC. It definately is more "hardcore" than PSU. FFXI is a fantastic game but has many many flaws. If you like the series and enjoy the world of FF, it will be worth the 20 dollars, but expect to put some time in.

I believe there is a psu demo on live that lets you play for a month.

I had a bit of a PSO addiction back in the DC days, and enjoyed it, however PSU is more of the same. Personally I feel FFXI is a better game overall, but try the PSU demo to see if it appeals to you.

well, any chance you'll be playin' single player as well? psu is the only one that supports offline play (as well as resale value)

If your looking for a REAL MMORPG then its FFXI hands down. PSU is more akin to diablo where the MMORPG elements are pretty minimal.

I've been getting into Oblivion lately, and even though I already own PSU (bought back at Xmas for $20 but haven't opened it yet) and was hooked on PSO when it first came out, I felt like FFXI is a more expansive game with a lot more to do. I just want to see where I'd get most from my monthly fee, both in terms of enjoyment and content.

You'd definitely probably get more out of FFXI--it's a better game overall. That being said, as others have noted PSU is more pick up and play. Don't bother with FFXI if you think you'll only have a couple of hours a week to play.

True, if you don't mind waiting HOURS to form a group of essential jobs/have lots of friends who also play. You can't do ANYTHING (beyond the first few levels) in this game with out a full party of different character types. Then, you'll stand in one place for hours killing the same monsters over and over again...until you're ready to move to the next area and do the same.

Only the hardcore need apply...

I'd go neither...MMORPG's are pure timesinks and basically impossible to ever really beat.

PSU because of single player and the ability to resell (even if not for much).
I played FFXI, went as far as buying it twice (PC and PS2 with HD) and spent a good three months with it. Was a complete waste of time and in the higher levels it took hours just to group (as others have said).

If you really want to get into a MMORPG, wait for more 360 MMORPGS to be released or save up and buy into a PC capable of running WoW. With their installed base you'll never have problems finding people to play with, and the content will be there for years (till they release WoW2). PC for MMORPGs would be the way to go, infact thats the only genre (and maybe RTS) that the PC is unbeatable on.
