The internal wireless card in the Wii is garbage. It can't handle inteference at all. I have no problems with my laptop or 360 but the Wii can't even connect (it was connected to my network before, but now I'm in an apartment complex so there is more interference). Has anybody found a workaround besides buying the ethernet adapter and a seperate wireless bridge/receiver?
I suspect this is a fairly common problem that is underreported because there is no compelling reason to go online.

Try changing the channel on your router to either 1 or 11

I've never had any problem with it, but I don't live in an apartment complex. Try the channel thing.

The only problem I had was that it wouldn't work with my WPA security sometimes. I had to turn off all security, let the system do an update (system update), and then turned WPA back on and it worked fine. I had to do it twice in over 3 days but since that 2nd time, it hasn't happened.
I'm not sure why you're having problems with wi-fi interference though. The Wii can pick up our router's signal back home from 2 floors down (Wii on 2nd floor, router in basement) and it even picks up my friends router here in the dorms even though he lives about 11 rooms away.
I'm guessing your router sucks or there's something getting in the way.

OP speaks the truth.
I actually have my wireless point 5 feet from my Wii, and I get the neighbors across the street before I get mine after 2 or 3 connection attempts and after that I fail the test. I did this daily. I don't know how to change the settings for my router (Westell 327W that I got free from Verizon DSL). My home computers, all 4 of them, connect flawlessly and I even have relatively zero lag online. So instead of stealing my neighbors conenction, I sucked it up and bought the wired connection since it is so close to my Wii and 360. Haven't had a problem since, heh!

Change channel to 1 or 11.
99% of the time this resolves issues.
This is what the FAQ is for.

Change your router settings from channek 6, to either 1 or 11. It's like night and day.

Like someone already mentioned, check your channel settings. I was having problems until I put it on 1. Works like a charm through no less than 9 other networks around me. Then again, you might just have a defective unit. Shit happens.

Only wireless device that doesn't work at all on any of the wireless networks in my dorm...

Ton of interference in my apartment, but the only issues I have are the very common problem of occasional "black screen of death"'s when trying to load one of the online channel.
When I get those I just turn off the wii, reset the router, turn the wii back on and it's good to go.

What you say may be true about the quality of the wireless card, but the solution is only as far away as the main customer support page of Nintendo, the Wii FAQ here on CAG, or the many posts in this thread. Just change the wireless router's channel. It requires no reconfiguration of your other devices and will solve your problem.

Try updating your router's firmware.

Does your college's wireless network require MAC addresses to be registered to connect? If so you may want IT to add it to the network manually, though even then the service is crappy on my wii. but it's better than no access at all

It's not a big problem... school gets out in a little over a month anyways. I will just take my Wii home over Easter and DL some new VC games then.

Is it possible that the Wii's wireless isn't compatible with some routers?
I bought the Wireless Wifi adapter, but it didn't work. So I checked the webpage, and found out that my router was not compatible, or something.

Yes, some routers will just not work. The Nintendo website has a list going for the DS, and I assume it will apply for the Wii as well. I know that my Netgear will not work properly with the Wii or DS.

I have the worst wireless router in the world 30 yards away through three walls, and it still works flawlessly...
Then again, I can't get my DS to connect with my router for the life of me. So I guess you win some you lose some.

Some routers flat out don't work, but others require certain things to be done. I know with the one I'm currently on, it requires me to disable any WEP at all.
I'm not happy with that, which is why I'm trying to get another one.
So I'd suggest looking into Nintendo's site for your specific router if possible, and seeing if anything special needs to be done.

I thought it was decent, considering that my router (Netgear WGR614) is the most unconfigurable, low output power POS on the market.
Signal strength in my living room is just under 50%, and the Wii has worked flawlessly with 128-bit WEP since day one.

I'm using a WRT54G, the most common router with the latest set of drivers. When I lived in a house I had to switch to channel 1 even though it was only getting interference from 3 weak signals all 100+ feet away.
Now I'm in an apartment and I'm getting interference from 20+ wireless signals. As I said its no problem for 360 or laptop, just the Wii. Considering that the wireless card in the Wii is made by Mitsumi, which as far I can tell doesn't even make any other wireless G cards or access points, I'm fairly confident that it is a low quality card.

So what channel is it on now?
Also what version is the WRT54G?

A ethernet/usb adapter and a wireless gaming bridge (like the Lynksys) should work. It just acts like a wired ethernet cable.

Mine is a v.3 on Ch.11 and reaches down three floors with no problems. The signal reads "low" on a laptop for comparison and is just as fast and also has no issues.
Maybe you should try the WRTG54GL - which is what they renamed the original. Read that you could boost signal strength using other software. Haven't needed to do that though.
On a side note, anyone know where the wireless card is physically located on the Wii? Maybe point it in the direction of the router.
