It's true! here's the digest version: Two new maps, both available on April 17th through the Halo 2 downloader in the game itself, and it's just $4 for the pair.The maps ar Tombstone and Desolation - remakes of Hang 'Em High and Derelict, respectively.

It's an original Xbox download, so there's no way to use MS points - and you WILL need an Xbox Live Gold account to download and play, since the original Xbox (even in BC mode) can't tell the difference between gold and silver. But you CAN use these on 360, just so we're clear. You just need to use a credit card for the purchase, instead of marketplace points. We'll have LOTS more info in the update later today, and in the meantime, here's the full text of the press release:

Took me like 2 minutes to download them. I like the changes they made to Hang em High, they've added some extra jump points and exits (you'll see what I mean) to help reduce choke points.

I'm not too sure about the new Derelict and the ramps....the grav lifts are ok...but IDK about the ramps. They seem out of place.

Needed an update, because I wasn't at 1.5.
Signed back in. Couldn't get to Live in the game.
Realized I needed a Gold account.
Used a 48-Hour Trial on my Gamertag.
Signed back into Halo 2.
Went to the downloader.
Tried to download the pack.
Authorized them to charge me for the pack.
Got "denied" and told I "wouldn't be charged" for the attempt.
Backed out and tried to go back in.
Got to the downloader and this time it went through. (Don't know if I was charged.)

Again, I had no intention of getting these maps for free. (I used the same account throughout the process; I don't even have other accounts on my 360!) It is possible that I did get charged for them, but from the looks of it, I did not.

So I read in the bungie press release thing that these maps wouldn't be in matchmaking for a week. Gotta do a custom match or something. So I need to know if I can do a quick match and specify the map type to be thrown into a party/game with others who are playing said new maps, or must I set up the custom match myself and invite friends to play. None of my friends play H2 anymore, so that could be tough to swing.

To those of you who are getting these for the original xbox - Frankie said the maps are tied to the BOX, not the gamertag/profile... so if you buy them for your xbox 1 you will have to buy them again for the 360 if you want to play on there.

After goofing off on both maps for a while, I like them both. With 8 people, I'm guessing a 50 kill round will go pretty quickly. Both maps are fairly small and wide open... Battle Rifle maps if you ask me.

Well I believe the default setting on the old Xbox was that premium purchases were enabled however I had clicked that over to disabled. Apparently that setting carried over but the ability to alter that setting never did.

I tried creating a new account and went to download it and at the bottom it says "PURCHASED" however it won't download it and I didn't realize it until after the fact but the new account doesn't have a credit card connected to it. So did I somehow end up in the same boat as Rig only with the downloads failing I can't finish the download yet?

What the fuck is going on with this download anyway? It would seem that its easier to glitch your way in to getting it for free than it is to pay for the fucking thing?

See it did that for the second account I made to try and download as well but then ended up letting me download it anyway.

I'm absolutely sure that I forgot to add a credit card to the second account before I tried to download it so I know it didn't charge me for them. I think there's maybe just a problem in general with trying to charge for downloading original xbox content on xbox 360 but that's just pure speculation on my part.

Every time my 360 breaks, I have to re-download the Halo maps. So if I download the new maps for $4, and this 360 breaks, I'd have to download them on the new 360 for another $4. And I have kept my first harddrive every time I've made the switch - the maps aren't useable until you download them again.

Something everyone should think about first. I was about to download them until I thought of that. Is Bungie going to eventually make them free?

glitch worked for me. Tried to be honest 1st and use my gold account. No go. So I stayed at the same menu/ game dashboard/download place, then selected the silver account gamertag and download worked just fine. Now the maps are on the 360 and the gold account can access the new maps. Maybe I'll mail in 4 dollars to bungie HQ, I feel bad getting these for free.

I got the "failed" message after staying up late last night waiting for the map pack to appear. I went to bed without downloading it and decided to figure it out this morning. The instructions given for 360 owners in the latest update on bungie.net are accurate, however they're missing one integral part: even though you may have a credit card set up as a payment option, it might not be your PRIMARY option. Once you've set up the credit card, you'll see it on the list of payment options. At that point you have to actually select the card from the list of options and press the A button. The right side of the screen should reflect the change, and you'll see the name of your card, etc. in the bottom right corner. Hope this helps some of you...the new maps rock!

I have to wonder if maybe MS forced Bungie to charge for these maps and Bungie didn't add this little "glitch" to get them for free on "accident" especially considering you will need them for ranked play next week.

I highly doubt that because Bungie is making a fortune off these maps as well.

also i think i remember that when transferring over to 360, it said something about not being able to manage acount anymore on the original xbox.. hence why i cant access my billing..

wtf.. im certain i had premium purchases on my old live acccount when i transferred over to 360.


now when i go to purchase the maps on my old xbox it says they are not enabled...

furthermore when i try to do account management.. i enter the last four of the card on file and i always get a technical error message!

That's the exact same thing that happened to me before I decided to try and create a brand new account on my 360. For some reason that one, with no credit card associated with it was able to download the maps but my original gamertag couldn't. I tried to give them my money but I guess they just wouldn't have any of it.

If anyone is having trouble downloading, i used the advice in this post from the teamxbox forums to make it work:

I got the "failed" message after staying up late last night waiting for the map pack to appear. I went to bed without downloading it and decided to figure it out this morning. The instructions given for 360 owners in the latest update on bungie.net are accurate, however they're missing one integral part: even though you may have a credit card set up as a payment option, it might not be your PRIMARY option. Once you've set up the credit card, you'll see it on the list of payment options. At that point you have to actually select the card from the list of options and press the A button. The right side of the screen should reflect the change, and you'll see the name of your card, etc. in the bottom right corner. Hope this helps some of you...the new maps rock!

I doubt they did it on purpose but they really did make it easier to download for free than it is to actually pay for the fucking things while using the 360.

No, I don't think it matters to bungie. They still get the same paychecks for their 80 hour weeks working on Halo 3. Just look at how the Gears of War guys fought to make their content free.


To the guy who says they suck, why? I didn't expect it to be as good as the first map pack, because these weren't made by bungie, but by some other developer on the side.

Funny... I paid to be able to play Halo 2 matchmaking and in a week I won't be able to play ranked games unless I pay another $4. I wouldn't be making such a big deal over $4, but I know I'm going to have to re-download them once my 360 kicks the bucket again.

If I recall, since it uses the old XBLive system in order to cater to everyone, you have to re-buy the maps every time you wish to download them. Let me load up my copy of Halo 2 briefly on my old Box and see if I have to pay for a re-download. Edit to follow...

My friend also can't download the maps on his 360. He actually gets stuck at the part for the Halo 2 update that was released before the maps were out. He always gets an Xbox Live not responding error. We've tried clearing his cache, deleted everything related to Halo 2, and still nothing. He hasn't been able to play in over a month.
