View Full Version : Is your Wii drive loud - like a weedwacker?

I turned on my Wii today for the first time in a few weeks to play some Wii bowling, and the drive sounded LOUD. I mean louder than my 360 loud. Sounded like the disc was getting eaten alve in there. Yet, I checked the game and no damage.
Has the Wii drive always been pretty loud? Usually I play it with a lot of people so it is a loud environment, but tonight I was all alone and the drive was louder than the volume on my tv. Sounded like a lawnmower or weedwacker. Well, I just thought I'd ask you opinions on the matter. With Super Paper Mario coming out, I don't want to run into any potential problems.

That's weird. Mine is completely silent. A loud Wii? That's unheard of.

My Wii is quiet.
But your mom isn't.
This is why they go so well together.

Do you have the flap open where you plug in the Gamecube controllers?
I had that open for awhile and it was vibrating against the wavebird plug-in. Took me awhile to figure out what it was. It did sound like a weed-wacker though so that might be your problem if you have stuff plugged in.

Nope, all closed. It only occurs when the system is reading a disc.

Mine's made some noise before butI figured out what it was.
Sometimes it reads really fast and causes it to shake a bit. And the stand it's on shakes and makes the noise. At least that's what mine does. And whatever is around it catches the shakes too so it can sound louder than it really is. Unstable stand.
At least that's the noise I had.
Or is it a god awful noise like this....

Nono, not a horrible noise like that, it is physical. It just sounds like the disc drive is being grinded or something. Very very loud. I'm calling Nintendo in the am, probably going to have it replaced. They replace it with a new unit, so no big deal to me.

Absolutely not. Having Nintendo replace/repair it would be a good idea.

Well, I'll keep everyone updated in detail on the whole situation - this way if anyone has a problem, they can at least know what to expect.
I had to send my DS Lite in for a dead pixel issue (like 4, just my luck) and it did take them 2 DS's until I got one that was actually ok, but they were really good about it. Thats why I like Nintendo - good customer service.

Called Nintendo, and they said that a big NO NO. They are sending me out a repair label and said everything should be done in 8-12 days. No worries.

Good deal. It would of sucked if this happened after your warranty expired.

They said the warranty is a full year from when it gets fixed.

Well, Nintendo said it is a problem and will only lead to further problems. I'd call them up and describe your problem in detail and see what they say.

Mine is audible only when I first put in a disk. After the game channel determines what game's in the drive, it's completely silent again.

Thats how mine was before the update, now I hear it spinning like a small fan whenever a disc is in there. If I go to a VC game it stops.
Go back to the menu and it spins again.

Speaking of which, I just experienced one of those.
A terrible time, too.
I am in the first round of the FA Cup in the middle of a great campaign in FIFA 07. I was down 0-2 after the first half, and came back to lead 3-2 during the 2nd half. 60-ish minutes into the match, I get the freeze and the pleasant BUZZZZZZZZZZZ.

No. It's not dead silient if you're next to it you can hear it, but it is pretty damn quite compared to any of the other disc based consoles I've had.
Sounds like you need to call Nintendo and get a new one.

Got the unit back today. They just replaced the disc drive mechanism. Since it was the same unit, all of my data and stuff was there. Everything came back in brand new condition.
Great job Nintendo!
Now...time for Super Paper Mario...

bumping this old this for some answers! I just got the annoying buzzing sound on my Wii. I don't know what's causing it. I'm thinking about sending it in to Nintendo, but I'm afraid I'm passed my year warranty. Any way to fix this?
Buzzing sounds similar to this...

My Wii makes noise, but not that much. It seems to make more noise when the pace of a game picks up or more enemys and actions become involved. Not sure why, but it makes noise online too.

Yeah, my Wii's been doing that for about a year now. No ill effects; it's somewhat annoying, but unless my TV volume is turned way down, the games drown out the Wii anyway.
My understanding is that the buzz is caused by overtightening of the screws attaching the drive to the frame, or somesuch. I once read that someone opened up their Wii, loosened the screws a tad, and the noise disappeared. Dunno if you'd be willing to try it just to resolve an aesthetic issue.

Thanks I might consider doing that. Although I might have to look into it more, as I'm starting to get DRE on my Wii . I know it started when I first started playing Brawl, but I thought it was because of the dual layer CD, I guess the sound never went away. Anyways thanks for the input.

My wii is a quiet kitty. No problems so far except that time it crashed when I was near one of those Metroid Price 3 blue doors while waiting it to open (long time ago).

Mine is dead silent most of the times, but when I put in or eject a disk it makes a loud WHIR noise...Every now and again I can hear the disk being read when playing a game.

Mine does make a buzzing sound, definitely not very loud, but noticeable from a comfortable distance. It's about as loud as a bee buzzing near your ear.
I've wondering about it never figured it to be an issue...
