From Kotaku:

The Swedes were right. Today, Sega officially announced NiGHTS for the Nintendo Wii. NiGHTS producer Takashi Iizukia says:

It's been 11 years... A long silence is broken, and NiGHT flies into a new dream world with a new story and on a new platform called the Wii...

Currently called NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (Japanese title not yet decided), the game does not have an announced release date other than "This Winter."

All I ask for is a game to fill the gap Pilot Wii-ngs is leaving open. This looks like the perfect fit. I am fucking stoked!!

I too would like to know why Nights is so widely regarded, never got a chance to try it

Eh, I never really cared for Nights on the Saturn. But it should be interesting to see what they can do with it on Wii.

Isn't that just sad though?

They know there's a huge hype for a game like this, why would they mess around like this?! :(

But yeah, seriously.. no one should get too excited just yet .. *sigh!*

Don't get too excited, people. This IS Sega we're talking about here.

Too bad you won't see what the fuss is about though, because Sega will fuck this one up.

I remember how excited I was when Shining Force was making a comeback... and look how that turned up.

I'm excited for this game, if only to see how badly Sega ruins it and the franchise.

Not glad to see Sonic Team making more games.

in terms of 3d platforming, it was a year before the n64, and it was really an amazing experience. I haven't played it forever, and I'm sure it'll show its age but the feeling of weightlessness and still having good control definitely blew my mind.

I hope this game does better then the Toejam and Earl sequel on the Xbox did. I remember when it was announced and all the fanboys were excited but nobody bought the game.

because it wasn't any good. It was completely 100% an average game (yes I know there are tons of GH games that are average).

Also, just because people on this site are getting all excited for a game, it doesn't mean that the majority of people who buy video games are. I can tell you right now that while Nights might be popular on this site (judging from posts), I doubt there is a whole hell of a lot of people clamoring for a sequel.

Though the very large base of the Wii will help it sell more.

Nights sold very well for the saturn, for anyone who did not play it when it came out though, it will be a huge letdown.
I am excited to see a sequel announced, but my excitement is heavily tempered. Whoever they put in charge of this ip has their work cut out for them. Wii Nights could be amazing, but without the right minds involved it could be horribly confusing to play.

Reception
At the time of its release, NiGHTS into Dreams was the top-selling game for the Saturn

That is from Wikipedia

Doesn't tell much though.

Anyone know how many saturns sold in total?

The problem with Shining Force is after SF 3 camelot left Sega. Sadly Sonic Team has gone downhill with games like billy hatcher and Sonic Heroes so I am having low expectation for this game.

Yeah, Sonic Team is not the Sonic Team that made nights, Sonic 2, and all those other classic games.

I have a feeling Sonic Team is now a bunch of koreans in a basement working for sweatshop wages. This is from the team that brought you the Sonic on 360/PS3 and lots of other shitty games in recent memory. Expect crap, and if it's good, it'll be great!

Sonic Team didn't make Sonic 2. Sega Technical Institute made it, a mix of American and Japanese game makers.
Sonic Team, at the time, was busy with Sonic CD. But, point taken. Sonic Team was awesome at one point of time.

More pics of the game... unless it's in that first link which is blocked for me.

Looks like just a possible remake of the Saturn game.

I would agree when one says that it looks like a potential remake, but take note: The big round boss indeed does resemble the first boss in Nights, but it is not an opera woman and is instead some sort of jester. Also, there is no discernable ceiling in the arena in which the new boss is located; in the original, the first boss is in a large room. I believe they have adopted the concept of the round baddie from the first one but are actually making a fresh new game.

Plus, they've said it's a fresh new game.

Cool. At first, I thought this had to be a April Fool's joke, but it's good to see that it's not.

I never played NIGHTS, and I wonder now if there's a chance we'll see the original through the Virtual Console?

I can't fucking wait for this game! Another reason to own the Wii and another reason to find one.

I'll wait and see how it turns out. Only game I care for on the Wii at the moment is Secret Rings and I didn't like it nearly enough when I played it to make me want to go out and buy a Wii for it.

Maybe if this turns out good it'll give me a second reason to want one...but I see disappointment on the horizon since this is coming from Sega.

How sad a statement, because in the years of the Dreamcast they could almost do no wrong. Even their failures were interesting and fun, at the least. Sigh...

I just pray for no Streets of Rage sequel because Sega will just butcher it like they've done with all their other franchises. I currently loathe Sega for destroying the Phantasy Star franchise and everything it once stood for.

No..god..no..just no. NO!

I try to keep my dislike for the Wii as quiet as possible on these message boards, just because I don't want to be seen as a troll or a threadcrapper.

But..this is just wrong: not one screenshot that I've seen [honestly, in my opinion] looks roughly as amazing as NiGHTS looked a decade ago on the Saturn. Not only that, Yuji Naka said so many times that he would not remake it, not rerelease it, and to see it on such a fickle console where the majority of hype comes from the casual mainstream, just completely disappoints me. I can truly see Nights either being a horrible disgrace to the original, or if it is somehow a beautiful, inspiring game, I can see it being completely ignored for the same overdone, uninventive crap Nintendo pushes out on a constant basis.

I honestly think as well, that the majority of SEGA fans own PS2/PS3's [lots of DC ports and originals] or XBOX 360's [after all, the Xbox had many great Sega games, and the 360 is home to some Sega exclusives] so releasing it on a Wii [a console owned by people not familiar with NiGHTS Into Dreams or people who mocked and spoke ill of NiGHTS when compared to a certain game about an Italian plumber] is a complete insult to fans of the original game who have played it the past 10 years. This game is nothing but a disaster in my eyes and I want no part of it. I will continue to play the original once or twice a year and when it comes out on Wii, I'll play the original knowing it is the -true- vision of one of the most beautiful games ever created.

The game was built around precise analog control, cutting edge graphics, and a devestating sense of speed. I don't care what anyone says, but the Wii remote is not built for the kind of precision or control. I can see how the game will work in my head already and that isn't how NiGHTS is supposed to be played.

Last time I say this, but I have to one more time. Fuck the Wii.

found this on gamefaqs "Secret Rings was made by a "new" Sonic Team, apparently. The project was lead by Yojiro Ogawa, who was famous for games such as Panzer Dragoon Saga, PSO, and Feel the Magic."

So maybe it wont be as bad as some of sonic team's recent work, but I doubt it will be better than the original.
