Well, right now I still look at the Wii's sensor bar and the "pointing" technology we've developed as something that I think is going to end up being very effective for the types of games that the hardcore gamers like to play. There are also other enhancements to the Wii interface and developments being planned that are going to really make games for hardcore players a lot more fun and interesting.
One other thing that I think is going to be the next big challenge for Nintendo is related to the idea of network entertainment. A lot of people have the misunderstanding that Nintendo is not interested in network gaming. What we are interested in isn't so much the idea of creating a game that is online and networked in a way that we have seen online up until now. We are really more interested in this idea of having the household television connected to the Internet constantly via the Wii. I think you are going to see a lot of new possibilities for new types of entertainment, such as new channels for the Wii in that type of network environment.

Nebulous enough to get me interested, but not expectant.

I thought they were retarded with the Wii, and look what happened.
I'll follow them blindly now. If he says it'll be cool, it'll rock.

More games, fewer channels...

So, uhm... in other words, there won't be much in the way of competitive or co-op on-line multi-player, and any notions of a MMORPG are D.O.A., but we will be able to use a Moogle-net to send e-mails to one another? Sweet!!!

I'm not holding my breath.

I love Miyamoto as much as the next guy, but this means little to me. It's all well and good to talk in generalities, but if you haven't delivered the goods to this point and have identified no hard facts about what's coming down the pipe, don't expect me to shit kittens.

Reading into this, but I'd guess he's alluding to Animal Crossing-type networking as opposed to FPS/LAN-type networking.
On a side note, I wish they were able to give us, at a minimum, 4P Mario Kart with 4 CPUs to make the races more interesting. Now that I've done 8P LAN DS races, I don't see how anyone can settle for a 4P race. I understand that's a lot of info to pass around, and I also understand that using a LAN experience as a standard for online gaming isn't entirely fair. But hey, that's the kind of networking experience I think that they should use as their baseline as they approach MK Wii. Aim high.

The first big Mario Kart LAN experience I had was waiting in line for the Wii at launch. We had a full 8 players (with others waiting in the wings to play) and played for about an hour until the cold rendered our hands useless. It was pretty damn awesome.

I like the thought that they're trying to do something different from Live to differentiate themselves even more. Yet, the cynic in me can't help but think that this is a simply a tactic to excuse the delay in online play.

Hey guys, we're going to make this the best console you've ever seen. Seriously, this baby is going to do everything you could ever want. And then some. Really. Now go play Wii Sports while we work on it some more.

It sounds good, but I won't get my hopes up until there's an official concrete announcement with some details.

I don't have anything to add to this discussion, but I just thought this was one of the funniest things I've ever read on CAG.

I see a lot of complaining and cynicism in this thread, quit bitching and sell it on eBay and use the money to buy 360 games already.

Am I the only one that finds this disappointing and a little bit frightening?
There are also other enhancements to the Wii interface and developments being planned that are going to really make games for hardcore players a lot more fun and interesting.
Being planned? As in "we're still thinking them up"? They must be really far away from actual development, or some kind of hint of something would be given.
The next quote, I'm just going to highlight the salient bits:
What we are interested in isn't so much the idea of creating a game that is online and networked in a way that we have seen online up until now. We are really more interested in this idea of having the household television connected to the Internet constantly via the Wii. I think you are going to see a lot of new possibilities for new types of entertainment, such as new channels for the Wii in that type of network environment.
I read this as they aren't at all interested in network gaming and instead they want to find creative things to do with channels that are "entertainment" or, in other words, not necessarily games.
This is the first announcement from Nintendo that has me worried. I could care less about channels that are things I could get on my computer. I bought a Wii to play games, and any time companies start talking this kind of blather, it reminds me of 3DO and CD-I and all those machines that really blew it because they didn't know what they wanted to be.
I get what Nintendo is doing in a way. If you really want online multiplayer, you probably already have or are going to get a PS3 or 360. So Nintendo will do something different. That's not in itself bad, but I don't think people really want a whole bunch of online non-game crap and would much rather be able to play friends and family that don't happen to be in the same room.

Well Mario Strikers Charged is going to have traditional online play so at least some Nintendo games will be in the traditional online vein. That being said, the Wii is not going to be the source for online gaming for the average gamer. I never thought it would be, just as I never planned on the Wii being my only console.

Nintendo have the single worst track record of delivering dissapointments to me. So far, I can't really say that I've been dissapointed with much, if at all. I guess Friend Codes qualify, maybe?
I will say this: Nintendo's "pauca sed matura" approach ("few but ripe" in pretentious) is both the best and the worst thing about them. The quality of their product, however, is not to be reckoned with.

Yeah, Friend Codes definitely falls on the disappointment side.
Online multiplayer for the DS could of been really awesome, but Nintendo managed to find a way to ruin it.

I think nintendo should open up its online shop thing(cant thing of the name now) to include inpendent game developers more openly, maybe demo out a bunch of them (2-3 at a time)and vote for the best one using the vote channel, then sell the full version of teh winner in the store......that would use like 3 channels right there and actually release games
ps maybe even giving a little discount to those who voted for the winner
