If you dont know the words to the national anthem and the pledge of allegiance you should be shot.
This was over a year ago. I was watching that Portland's coach did that and I was wondering why Don Nelson didn't join in. That would have been funny to watch.

Some of y'all are pretty harsh. I'm sure she knew the words, but she was under a lot of pressure, and that can cause momentary lapses of memory. She has a decent voice. Dude was awesome, btw.

Yeah Maurice Cheeks was pretty awesome for doin that. I know sometimes I study all night for a test and the next day when I see the question I know I must have looked at 10 times, the answer just escapes me for some reason. So I can understand when your being watched by millions why you would just forget.

Oh and just so nobody has to be shot...
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight'
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen, thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream;
'Tis the star-spangled banner: oh, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Oh, thus be it ever when free men shall stand,
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Power that has made and preserved us as a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust";
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Bet you didn't know ALL the words.
Looking for another country's anthem?

It's got nothing to do with being dumb, and everything to do with stage fright. Anyway, this happened ages ago. They were even on Jay Leno after it happened. I'm surprised it's re-surfacing now.

I'm a singer who sings occassionally in front of a large-ass audience and this is bullshit. I never get stage fright. If she was a halfway respectable singer nothing close to this ever would have happened.
x0thedeadzone0x
07-10-2004, 12:55 PM
Laughing's a way to relieve pressure off the singer though when I first saw it I know it's not necessary. What else are you supposed to do in front of that many people? She just embarassed the shit out of herself, no need for people to come in here and verbally bash her even MORE... I bet everybody knows who she is where she lives around, "The girl that couldn't remember the national anthem", oh and that must be just lovely having to deal with THAT every day.
Though I gotta admit, "starlight"? That was funny. Though if I was her (god help me) I would've kept going, not stopped and laughed. As a performer you're supposed to keep going no matter what, even if you screw up. Hell, I learned that my first year in piano.

That would've been awesome, something about Nelson singing would've just cracked me up. Would've been even better if he got Dirk involved. Anyway that was really cool of Mo Cheeks to help that poor girl out. Although, it's hard to have sympathy for someone who won a contest to sing the national anthem and messed it up.

Well everyone responds differently to being in front of big audiences. I don't think she was trying to be some big shot singer, she was just the winner of a fan contest. BTW, what's the largest crowd you've ever sung in front of? I'm sure it doesn't compare to a playoff audience which is what this girl was dealing with.

Exactly. Singing on karaoke night at the local bar is a little different than singing the national anthem front of 20,000 sports fans. There is tons more pressure involved. Like someone said earlier, she won some kind of fan contest and not a professional. Give her a break. :roll:

If I remember correctly, she was around 14 years old.
Maurice Cheeks was admirable for helping her through her nervousness. She probably would have forgotten any song she chose to sing that night.
At least she tried to sing the National Anthem the way it was intended, instead of like Mariah Carey.

I haven't sung at a playoff game or something as large as that, but I've certainly sung for larger crowds than at karaoke bars. Hell I've never been to one of those. But seriously, if she's gonna win a contest like that, she shouldn't be so scared. It's a friggin contest, not like anyone's gonna kill you if you're afraid. But people will kill you for laughing while singing the national anthem. Not literally, of course.
