Seriously though. Almost 5 months after launch Nintendo, my little sister wanted to get the Wii today and I called all the Bestbuys, Targets, Walmarts, Gamecrazys, Gamestops, etc. in the area and none had one.
You gotta start pumping these suckers out there so people can buy them. Not everyone wants to wait at Circuit City in the early AM on the weekend to get a Wii. Are they waiting for the big releases like Super Paper Mario and Mario Party 8 to come out and then get production moving?

If you check out Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/gaming/nintendo/charticle-the-first-four-months-249629.php) you'll see that Nintendo has been pumping out consoles faster then anyone else has either this gen or last gen.
If you want to get a Wii you're going to have to watch the Sunday ads that Speedy posts and if a store is going to have Wiis you'll have to get up early and get in line.

I say this not to be inflammatory, even though (zips up asbestos suit) that's how it'll inevitably be received, but why is it that I sense that by roughly this time next year, there will be a SHITLOAD of 'gently used' Wii available on eBay?
(What I'm saying for those of you too dense to draw the proper inference is that many self-appointed 'non-gaming' types are buying them up out of sheer trendiness and conformity and that they are inherently the type of person that has no attention span for anything, much less a gaming console with graphics that are inarguably 'behind the curve'.)

well, i really don't care for the wii... i had fun for the first couple weeks, then played it a week or so more because it was still pretty new, after that it has collected dust. don't get me wrong, i like the idea from the controller and everything, but the games for it really aren't that great.

Maybe, but couldnt the same have been levied on the PS2?
On the other hand, I still find waiting outside on a Sunday morning to be a bit outside the comfort range for your average customer unless its the day after Thanksgiving. Perhaps all of those systems are being bought up by gamers looking to replace or suplement their PS2s? Perhaps its Nintendo loyals who have converted their familes. It will be interesting to see if any demographic info gets released.

Ebay is hardly the judge of anything. Go look right now. There are a "shitload" of used XBOX 360 systems you can buy. Not to mention there are a shitload of Wii's and PS3's up there right now also.
Also, I am going to have to disagree with your "non-gaming type" caring to much about the "behind the curve" graphics. I would venture they are more interested in the simple fun factor, which the Wii can deliver in droves and at a very very reasonable price.

The PS2 was not this difficult to get at a retail store in early April of 2001, at least not as I recall. It's good for Nintendo that they're bringing Those-Who-Previously-Scoffed-At-Gaming into the fold, but I'm not so sure it's good for Those-Who-Have-Been-Loyal-All-These-Years. That's true in the short term due to difficulty obtaining a Wii without research and linesitting, and it might be true in the long term when it comes to dictating how the system's library skews.
I think we kind of already have a strong feeling about the answer to the latter.
Lastly, I vigorously maintain that this is not primarily the work of the Nintendo, um, 'devout'. It the hype factor and the affordability of it. It's a console that doesn't intimidate women in general, be they age 8 or 80. That counts for a TON.
