So, while shopping at a GS I normally don't shop at today, I grabbed a used dvd, one of the generic skus (used dvd, rated r, nr, nc-17), and took it up to the register.

Instead of the $5.99 it rang up at, I got it at $1.99. It's also part of the B2G1 sale.

I didn't get the chance to check the acutal movie skus, though. So it's pretty YMMV on which movies your store has.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengence. It's a movie by the director of Oldboy.

You got "Sympathy For Mr. Vengence" for $1.99??? Actually after a 10% discount and B2G1..thats just barely over a buck. I just got done buying that for $25 at FYE.

Is this confirmed nationwide? any generic sku DVD at EB will ring up $1.99? Because that would f'in rock. My local ones usually have at least a decent amount of those, that I've noticed.

You suck.

Downside of having a Gamestop in a small town: 40 copies of Old School, 0 copies of any Chan-Wook Park film.

Let alone for 2 bucks.

whats a generic sku??

If you look at the sticker on a used DVD from EB, sometimes it's labeled "Rated R" or "Rated PG13" or just something generic. I don't recall if those are the exact labels, it's just not the movie title. Those are generic SKUs. I got Saw II like a week or two after it came out in the 3 for $10 bin because it had a generic sku for $5.99.

There are also generic ones for some games.. I just bought PSO Episode 3 for the Cube, and the tag had it marked at 9.99 Generic GameCube Title

yeah if confirmed it actually is pretty good. Would they be marked as such?

Yeah, I dunno... I'm a bit confused at the wording of the OP... it rang up at 5.99, but they gave it to you for 1.99? Does that mean it was actually marked 1.99 then, and they manually lowered the price?

I am assuming he meant
"instead of the $5.99 it was marked at it rang up at 1.99 and is also part of the buy 2 get 1 free sale"

Yeah, what Snake said. It was priced at $5.99, and when it rang up, it rang up at $1.99.

I looked around and saw no sinage about the sale, and the employees didn't know about it either. I say it's time to hit up other GameStops for some good movies.

I grabbed The Departed blu-ray this past weekend, with one of those generic sku's on it, for $12.xx. I figured that was a steal for a new-release blu-ray (and most likely some kind of mistake).

I can confirm nationwide. At least in Harrisburg, PA. I bought 16 movies, and Worms Blast for Cube for around $18 total after B2G1 and Edge card, and $5 off used Cube game coupon.

As I noted before, sometimes you can strike it lucky with the generic stickers. Most were anime/really old stuff/martial arts etc., but there are a few gems. I got One Night With the King, which was only released like 2 months ago, and that Tiptoes movie with Kate Beckinsale. I'm not sure if they are considered gems, but pretty damn good for $1.20 a piece after coupons.

Oh yeah, to add to the above post, these dvds were recently restickered with the 1.99 price.

My friend at Gamestop (ASM) told me about this a couple days ago when I went in to use the $5 off GCN coupon. It's legit and happening everywhere, from what I know. The generic's should say "Used DVD" on the spine/price label. Too bad the asm at my GS is a movie buff; he cleaned out anything interesting :P

That is correct I did price changes the other day for them. It is all "USED DVD R, NC-17, NR" "USED DVD G, PG, PG-13" "USED DVD ANIME" and "USED DVD MUSIC" They have all been marked down to $1.99 and most of them are like B movies or movies that didn't scan. Sometimes you can find some gems though. Take a look at your local GS/EB.

I would assume we will start seeing DVD prices drops real soon. I am pretty sure EB/GS is going to stop, same thing that happened with CD's a few years back. But don't quote me.

I just came back from 3 more EBs/Gamestops, and I've found this deal is actually somewhat YMMV. The first I went to had all the generic stickered DVDs at $1.99. Yay. No problems.

The second had none of them stickered correctly (still 5.99), but the employee knew about the 1.99 thing, and said they just didn't get around to fixing the prices yet. So yay. No problems again.

Now, the third one had SOME 1.99 movies, and some generic stickered titles still priced at 5.99. I asked about those and they said "No.. those are definitely 5.99. Only some came down to 1.99"... I questioned it again, they just replied
"Yeah we're sure.. we are the managers" or something similar to that. :P These 5.99 titles were generic stickered, just exactly like the rest, but they refused to ring them up, so I was out of luck on those.

Just so you know, you may have some problems. The two I had luck with were in the Colonial Park area, near Harrisburg, PA. The sucky one was the Babbages inside the Colonial Park mall. (Yes, all three of these stores are about 1 min away from each other, hahaha)

Could someone explain what happened to CDs?

Basically many locations stopped taking in CDs entirely while a few still held out for a few more weeks. In the meantime most stores shipped out their remaining CDs to other specific stores, probably those that had good overall sales or were selling plenty of CDs.

Afterwards, the remaining stores went through massive discounts on their CDs and, finally, a $1 a pop clearance on all CD titles. That was a fine time, especially since if you were near some CD-laden stores you could have found a lot for no money whatsoever. Even better was that it came along at a B2G1 sale or so, so combine that with Edge and...well, it was quite a happy time.

At that point that was the end of CDs in EB/GS. Sort of similar in execution to removing older games from their stores (see Dreamcast, N64, SNES/Genesis/NES, etc.). The notion that EB/GS has some stores only offer credit for DVD trades while others will not accept DVDs any longer, coupled with drastic reductions in DVD stock and B2G1 or B2G2 sales suggests that DVDs are going to be cleared out as well in the near-future.

Shame, really. I've seen plenty of stores make used DVD sales work quite well. The only difference between the stores that made it work and EB/GS was that if you were going to pick up a caseless DVD or one with major damage or missing inserts and the like they shave a few bucks off of the title for you. That and better overall presentation. This past month is one of the first few times I've seen the DVDs properly organized and labeled, which is much more appealing than the standard "throw it in a bin and let the customers sort it out method" that just screams low-rent.

You should have just looked that the SKU numbers on the $5.99 and $1.99 ones and you could be like hey look they are the same sku...meaning same price, don't be a stupid EB/GS employee. And if you want to really piss them off just threaten the "I'll call home office" that always work. I know it does cause people have done it to me lol.

I went to an EB to check this out but nothing was marked and I forgot how it worked (since I haven't seen this thread in a while) so I didn't get anything. Plus, everything was messed up.

Most of the DVDs are overpriced at $9.99-12.99 each but they're always good for boxed sets though I didn't see any good boxed sets either.

Damn, I wish I had read this before I went and bought a copy of almost every PSX game they had. =\

So, this is just on movies? In this thread, someone said they picked up a generic-SKU'd Cube game and it was also on sale. Does that mean I should look for $2 Cube games?

That was me that mentioned the Cube thing. No, videogames with generic SKUs are not on sale, at least not for 1.99. However, I did pick up PSO Episode 3 for the Cube for $9.99 with a generic SKU, which is cheaper than they usually have it for. So you could theoretically find some cheaper games if they didn't mark them correctly. I would think this would be difficult, however...

So yeah, the $1.99 is just on movies.

The EB near me had like 50 dvds marked $1.99, and still had alot of ones marked $5.99. I dont know if they were generic skus on the $5.99 ones or not, but most of the $1.99 ones were Music dvds and really crappy studio made dvds. I might have to check in on this again since when I went last was like a week and a half ago.

LOL I used to hit up that Babbage's in the Colonial Park Mall when I was down in H'burg on biz every couple weeks. That and the EB that was in the little strip mall with I think a small theater complex near it someplace.

That EB was GREAT for having lots of older guides that should've been pulled a LONG time ago. Haven't had any time to check them when on biz there lately though.

On topic though, I may check my local GS stores to see if I can find some halfway decent movies for $2 each, to either pad my movie collection or just to watch once n trade to a pawn shop or something for the $2 back.

Thanks for the info OP.
