What video types can the PS3 play?

I just tried to play a AVI file off, but it says it's unsupported. Does anyone know or have a list of what file types the PS3 will play?

AVI doesn't work, you'll need to convert it.
I second this program.. Works great. You can covert it to 720p format and watch in super high def. You can download the HR.HDTV formats and use Video9 to convert to MP4 720p.

P.S. It doesn't support A3C surround sound tho. That program will only covert to anything else to stereo. The only downside. :(

Might as well just burn it to a DVD. It's faster and less HDD space-consuming.
