Has anyone been able to find how well each of the games sold?

God of War has sold around 2 million copies just in the US according to the sales chart (http://vgchartz.com/amonthly.php) for February (#22). The March numbers haven't been released yet, so you'll have to wait until later this month to get that info for the sequel.

Doesn't make sense how this game is doing that poorly....

2 million is not poor at all.

I guess in retrospect it is, but when you have 105 million consoles it's kind of a low number....

That's the incorrect way of thinking about it.

The top selling game on the ps2 was Vice City selling 8,116,750 units.
Followed by San Andreas 7,785,750

These two games are the all time top selling games.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to sell 2 million copies? Very few games out there sold 1 million copy alone in U.S. The number of systems you state is worldwide. Not all countries like the same genre of games, so it might sell less in other counties. It is very hard to get a large video game ratio to system for the playstation 2 since they have a large diversity of games and high system sale ratio (a large chunk come repurchase to replace faulty disc drives and other malfunctions). Only a few games have a large video game to system ratio like Halo 2, Mario 64 and Mario Bro , most of them came from the system bundle.

Most countries' sales are from racing and soccer/football games. You have no idea how poorly our beat-em-up games do in Venezuela and eastern Europe.

in America, the number 1 sport is American Football and everywhere else, soccer is usually number 1.Especially in Europe/South America

dont the sales figures for games kinda mirror the same sales figures for music cds? where so many hundred thousand copies sold is a good thing but 1 million is a hopeful ideal goal?id like to know how they figure in returned games into game sales totals. especially when ti comes to games like enter tha matrix which sold huge due to the hype and buzz and hopes peopel had for the game only to end up being a complete turd which im sure many people returned asap.

They still count as sales, because they are not returned to the company.

2 million copies isn't bad at all

Just was always weird to me how God of War is seen as one of the top 3 games on the system, gets priased from everyone, and then sells 2 million copies.... I guess the video games industry is weird like that.

yeah btu most games tend to sell in the hundred thousand mark. only a small handful of games tend to break the million mark and those tend to be franchises that have been established for years or breakout games like gears of war or god of war. and when you factor in how much each game costs to what it cost to create the game thats still pretty good money which is why movie companies are cranking out shit movie games like crack.

yeah most of us steer clear of that crap but the companies still sell enough of them that its worth the effort and investment. hell thats another thing id like to see are game sales on movie franchise based games versus movie box office sales.

And for the record, Mario Bros. 3 holds the record for top selling game sold separately from the system, ranking in over 18 million units. Vice City and San Andreas don't even come close, nor are they even the second best selling games, they don't even hold a candle to some of yester years big selling games. But ya, I have yet to buy God of War, I'm so lazy.

Wrong!
The top selling game of all time goes to Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES (~18 million). Also, the top PS2 game sold was San Andreas (~14 million) and next was Vice City (~13 million). You were close, but you got no cigar...:wall:

By the way, credit to my above statement is April '07 issue of Gameinformer

And to stay somewhat on topic, I've got no idea how much either one has sold...but 2 mil is nothing to scoff at.

Yeah, I guess. I mean, GoW cost 20 million to make. and lets say distrubuting took 5 million. So we have 2million*50$ which is 100 millon, -25 = $75 million. SO I can see why it would be worthwhile...

^^ Most people probably didn't buy it at $50, but I'm sure it was still profitable.

If a game retails for $50 thats not what the publisher is selling it for, its usually closer to $35. And usually when a company says it costs $20 mil or whatever to make a game that usually includes everything(i.e. marketing, promotion, distribution, development, manufacturing, etc)
