My fiancee got me a Wii as an early birthday present. I know the usual gang of games I'm going to eventually pick up -- Twilight Princess, Sonic & the Secret Rings (which may end up sucking, but I'm a sucker for a Sonic game), Red Steel, Super Paper Mario, but what other gems am I missing?
Any ideas on games for a new Wii owner...let me know...

Oh? Problem with Red Steel? It looked really good from everything I've heard/read about it.

Oh? Problem with Red Steel? It looked really good from everything I've heard/read about it.If you love shooters, I would stay away from it, it'll probably piss you off due to its unpolished state. If you just have a passing interest or want to see how it will work on the Wii, give it a shot, but definitely not for $50. $25 used at EB is excellent.

I enjoyed it, but realize what it is and what it isn't. It isn't a Halo or PC shooter killer, it is a fun game on the wii controls.
I used to be a heavy fan of shooters but got bored with those. Red steel was fun for me.

I thought Red Steel was a good game. Definately worth $30 when it's on sale. Congrats on getting the Wii and enjoy Wii Sports.
Stay away from Medal of Honor, I just tried it this morning and feel that it is not even comparable to Red Steel. I was hoping for it to be at least around the same quality.

Red Steel is interesting, but didn't really hold my interest. I would say to give it a rental, and go from there.
Trauma Center is excellent, if not a bit repetitive.
If you like golf, get Tiger Woods, because it is teh awesome +1.

Secret Rings is pretty good once you get upgrades and stuff...but at the beginning it is sloooow. After you get upgrades Sonic moves quicker...no surprise you have to earn decent game play.
Thanks Sega!

If you've played a good FPS before then stay away from this game. I wouldn't pay more than $10 new.

Sonic is great, as is Zelda. Super Paper Mario is shaping up to be my game-of-the-year already.
I would check out Excite Truck too if you like arcade racers at all. I had a blast with that one.

Zelda for sure. Tiger Woods Golf is excellent. Madden is very good. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is good but I would get it on another system if you have others. Warioware is very good but more of a rental. Same goes for Rayman. Also the Godfather if you haven't played it before.
I thought all of those were very very good games.

The Godfather is awesome on Wii, if you haven't played it on other systems. It's probably a better recommendation for seeing how point/shooting mechanics work on Wii than Red Steel too.
I'd even reccomend far cry for that over Red Steel, at least it's cheap and you can get $25-28 for it at EB right now.
Second'd Excite truck, very shallow, very repetitive, very, very fun.

red steel is decent just shitty shitty cut scenes that you can't skip. really brings it down. if you can find red steel cheap anywhere(i know there was a price drop recently) i'd get it. the sword fighting is cool but also suffers from the wii boxing syndrome where what you're doing doesn't exactly occur on screen.

I had so many urges to turn off the Wii in the first 20 min. It gets a bit better with cutscenes, but they still suck. It is a stretch to call it okay, it's mindless, and the controls are bad, but for some reason I played about 4-5 hours on a rental.
I'd say 4 of 10 for red steel. Much better games out there.

Red Steel is an alright purchase for $30.00, but absolutely no more than that. I'd personally wait for it to hit $20.00.

sonic sucks :(That'd be true as long as you mean "Lightyears better than any other 3D Sonic game ever made."
It's all relative, I suppose. Secret Rings is a quality, fun game, though, with or without the Sonic branding. A must-play for Wii owners.

Pick up a used copy of Twilight Princess, a copy of Super Paper Mario, Wiiplay/Extra controller, and go back and enjoy the backcatalog of GC games.
That should hold you over until Metroid.
Don't bother with any of the shooters, please, please.
If you finish playing all of that: remember that gamefly is your friend.

I wouldn't say its lightyears better. I've played the 3D Sonic games pretty extensively and I think Secret Rings is pretty far from the best.
Still a good game though :D

i concur with the above. godfather's use of wiimote actions keeps it involving. as for the multi-player minigame mayhem, if you do have friends over a lot, warioware is especially engaging - you get your money's worth initially but some people tire of it (but not me!).
and yes, super paper mario is awesome.
do try to pick up more wiimotes - try gamecrazy's "used" ones (came "new" with hollywood video's wiiplay rentals but had to be sold as "used"). if you can't find any wiimotes, wiiplay isn't that bad an outlet.
derder has a good point - enjoy quality gc action and perhaps try some classic virtual console games until the wii picks up more steam later on this year.
congrats on getting the wii! g'luck with the games.

Still a good game though :DWe've already determined you have a far higher threshold of pain when it comes to Sonic games than a normal person, though. ;)
For me, Secret Rings was the first 3D game to actually feel like a Sonic game. While the Adventures weren't bad in their own right, comparing them with the Genesis classics always left me feeling flat. Especially the !@$%^@ "find the pieces of emerald!!" levels. ARGH!

 Yeah...I don't know what draws me to the Sonic games. I mean, with the 360/PS3 one if you look really deep there is a good game there...it's just covered by glitches and horrible loading times (and interspecies romance) :-P
And I hated the emerald hunting levels as well. The Sonic/Tails (from adventure 1) and the Sonic/Shadow (from adventure 2) were the best parts easily IMO.

I liked Sonic, but I didn't play it much since it seemed so non-linear and confusing to collect everything. Maybe I just didn't get far enough.

I have the following games:
Zelda: Get it. Self explanatory
Red Steel: This game gets crapped on too much. It's pretty good once you get used to the controls. It has a little more of a learning curve than it should, but is still pretty fun. I would get it for $25 or less.
Wii Play: It's not very deep, but if you can find it and are in the market for another controller anyway, definately pick it up. There are some pretty good mini games in here that can get addicting.
Rayman - A good title, but the games seem to get repetitive. I picked it up for $30, and I think it was a decent deal. I wouldn't pay more than that though.
Trauma Center - A good game. I never played the DS version, so it was all new to me. If you're looking for something to buy, I'd pay in the 30-40 range for it, but if you have a backlog of other stuff I'd wait for it to drop.
Basically, my advice would be to just get Zelda and Paper Mario if that's what you're interested right now. They should take you a bit to complete, so don't rush out and buy any of the other titles yet. And in a few weeks we might be seeing better deals on some of the other games.

Still a good game though :DYou liked the PS3/360 Sonic. I don't think you're capable of determining a good Sonic game object.
Anyway, Zelda is the obvious one. Definitely get Trauma Centre if you haven't already played it on the DS. If you have... pass, for now. Avoid FPS' for now, and get your hands on Super Paper Mario. If you want more remotes, you might as well pick up a copy of Wii Play. I'm waiting for other games - Sonic, Excite Truck, etc. - to drop in price significantly. They look like good games, sure, but I'm not paying full price for Sega and Nintendo's test-subjects.

This is a sad day for me as last night, I ceased to have a Wii. My fiancee purchased it from Sam's Club and while it didn't have a return label on the package, it was apparently a returned Wii. How did we uncover the mystery of the returned to Sam's Club Wii?
The previous owner apparently let their dog play with their Wii, which subsequently led to many chewed up parts, most especially their Wii-mote. So...it has been returned to Sam's Club to be bought another day.

Yea, I know. I was shocked too -- Sam's is usually really good about posting if something is a returned product or not.
We got it on Monday at a Sam's Club in Baltimore (was at my fiancee's parents for Easter) and then we returned it up in Latham, NY where they were SHOCKED there was no markings on it that showed that it was a) returned and b) had broken parts. It worked when plugged into the TV, but for the price, my fiancee wanted me to have a fully functional, Wii that didn't look like it just came from a Fox special about when animals attack.

And I've got one. On Sunday morning, my fiancee and I waited outside of our local Toys'R'Us in the morning...to get a pass and come back at 9am to get a Wii.
So, I've got Sonic and Wii Sports and I couldn't be happier with the gameplay of both. I'm so very excited...WIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!
