WOOHOOO! I beat it! Finally! The next to last level stumped me a bit, but I finally got it. Wow.. seriously one of the best games I've ever played in my life (at least puzzle-wise). Completed in 19 hours, 58 minutes, and 40 seconds. :P So close to 20 hours. I could have edited my post before, but I felt this deserved its own post. WOOHOO!

I won't deny that I'm playing the everloving shit out of some Super Mario right now, but I'm still in the process of getting all the hidden treasure. While nowhere near as exciting in gameplay as the main story arc with all of its crazy shits - the hidden treasure bits work quite well... They do blow me the eff away with how deep some of the simplest little levels are.

My Game of the Year.

i guess i'll do my part to keep this topic on the first page.

amazing, amazing game. i just beat the level where you have to steal the treasure map back from Rose and even though i died a bunch of times, i still got that great "AH HA!" moment when i finally figured it out.

the fact that i only have about 60 treasures, and that i only usually play one level each day or so means it'll probably keep me busy for the rest of 2007....which is fine by me......

The level in the spoiler tag above is one of my big favorites. There is a similar "one-off" kind of level, with a "world" that is completely self-contained down the line that knocked me on my ass, and judging from The Crotch's reaction (the character, not my body region) my awe of it is not unique.

I'm really surprised that so many people are enjoying this game as much as they are. The gameplay is frustrating, and I was expecting more of "no, this pisses me off" kind of reactions, which turned people off from other games of similar genres...

Well I've been playing for a while, and I gotta say, I'm not too impressed so far. Maybe it's just that the only point 'n' clicks I ever got into were the first two Monkey Islands, and I'm expecting too much. The puzzles are usually pretty clever, but it's missing something in humor/presentation. I was hoping for more of the kind of humor like in the intro, where Wiki makes you drop the umbrella.

I'm only on the level with the snow-sweeping guy though. How long should I stick with this before I trade it?

HOWEVER, one interesting item to note is that when I was in-store on the 12th, they had at least 25+ copies of Z&W... and today I bought the last one. So, apparently it's selling. Which, I take it, is good. :applause:

I said Zack & Wiki was my game of the year way prior to experiencing the gem that is Super Mario Galaxy, and currently I am playing Metroid Prime 3 Corruption.

I won't knock either SMG or MP3:C, because they are amazing games. Really, really well done, to the point where I'm more suprised by MP3:C than I've been by either Z&W or SMG. But dammit, Z&W was the most fun that I've had ever. Nothing about MP3 or SMG can be said to dissapoint. But nothing can impress me as much as a puzzle adventure with a release date of 2007.

That'd be all.

This game is perfection. Just wait until later levels - you'll see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Hopefully, by now, there are enough people on this board to see what the hell I meant when I was first running around telling people that this one was the one. I'm surprised by how many people were really excited about it. I'm not surprised that there's less attention being focused towards Zack & Wiki and more towards Super Mario Galaxy (and I expect that good old planet-exploring Mario will be left forgotten by the time ASS KICKING Mario ships along with the rest of Brawl).

Level with me. I'm enjoying Mario Galaxy, but the /use/ of the controller in the game is really annoying me. Really deeply seriously annoying me. It's a good game, but not the Second Best Game Ever in my book.

Are the mechanics in this game sort of forced? Like... the developer used the shaking, twisting, and waving in areas where I could simply click and move an analog stick to the same effect?

Yes. Certainly. However, the places where the game does that are few, and mostly reserved for the beginning.

There are brilliant bits with the use of the Wiimote right off the bat, by all means, unless you've spoiled them for yourself by watching one (or two) too many gameplay videos. There are specific moments where the fact that the game is really asking you to perform a silly task is not annoying, because the task itself is laugh-inducing.

Later levels don't have the same problem. Certain panel-based puzzles (in which you place elements into a grid, for example) work beautifully with the ability to twist the elements in place. Some puzzles are down-right frustrating (fishing, swordfighting) at first, though perfecting such techniques is not necessary, since the game rewards a "brainier" solution to the "action based" ones.

At least one use of the Wiimote is "perfection" and "the single best use of the Wiimote in a game EVER for non-aiming-related gameplay." There, I said it.

It seems from your post that you may be too impatient for a game where trial and error is often the only method of proceeding. The game does get rather difficult, and if you don't feel like playing a stage for an hour to try to figure out where everything goes and how everything fits together, it really might not be a game for you. This isn't me shooting off being a dick, this is me warning you in advance. I suggest making it a rental to ensure that it's something that you want in the first place.

Zack and wiki is a good game but not great. It's a solid 7 in my book. You'll get tired of it pretty quick. It's cool for a while, but the game play is so repetitive. You basically just point at this, shake that, flip this, drop that... You never really do much. Still beating a massive puzzle is quite satisfying (most of the time, some just piss you off). Also a few of the items are just frustrating to use and sometimes figuring out their use is too difficult or not apparent at all. I will say some puzzles use visual clues, and other puzzles don't. My last beef with this game is that some of the kinetic controls are wacky and a little off. I'm not sure if it's this game's fault or the wii's. I'm guessing it's the games calibration since most of the games I've played with motion controls have been spot on.

On a side note, mario galaxy fu@king rocks! I haven't like a mario game since Mario 3! It's seriously one of the best games I've ever played (if not the best). Also the motion controls in SMG have been kept to a minimal amount. A majority of the game play focused on how each planet's gravity changes the physics or how you can use gravitational anomalies to advance to the next stage. I thought it was brilliant! Best of all you get classic 2D Mario game play on some levels, old school 3D Mario game play on others, and you get to this new planetary game play! I just love the diversity of the levels. It's truly astounding.

Shake Wii Mote to throw things.

Shake Wii Mote to spin.

Shake Wii Mote to climb vines.

Shake Wii Mote to swim faster.

Shake Wii Mote to activate switches.

Shake Wii Mote to break blocks.

Shake Wii Mote to make Boo Mario invisible.

Shake Wii Mote to activate Stars.

If I could get the Wii to actuallyl REGISTER that I'm shaking the wii mote, so I could pull these tasks off with precision, perhaps I'd find the game more fun.

In fact, the game seems to have minimal uses of buttons. A lot of those game tasks feel like they would be easier and less intrusive with a button.

Pointing the Wii Mote at various things isn't a problem. THAT is fun, and awesome. Using the Wii Mote to steer a rolling ball is FUN as well. It's the damn shaking motion that I wish I could just... replace with a button press.

It sort of reminds me of one of the Castlevania games on the DS where you had to draw various symbols to use spells. It feels tacked on.

I rock at puzzle games and adventure games. I don't mind fiddling with things. I just hate unresponsive controls or Ninja Gaiden Syndrome (Repeated deaths due to twich gaming.) I don't think I /lack/ patience. I just tend to approach games as part of my adult life: I weigh the cost of consuming my time versus what the game is going to provide.

To counter what certainly /does/ sound like you being a dick, why not tell me why you got the impression that I'm an impatient person?

No, not being a dick - I don't know how much of this thread you've actually read, but there were several people who found that this game wasn't for them. Most of the hardcore adventure crowd was in the know about the title due to Adventure Gamers / Mix'n'mojo / any other Adventure-related links that covered this title in depth... Forgive me for jumping to conclusions there. Wasn't trying to be a dick as much as I was being one, if only indirectly.

I can not possibly agree with your comments regarding Mario Wii-mote use. It's possible you have a faulty Remote, since I felt that spinning, throwing items, and swimming were particularly dead-on. The shaking to climb the vines, for example, is quite sublime as far as I'm concerned, since it offers rather intuitive controls (granted, in my humble opinion) regarding the speed of your character's motion along that path. I will say that it is annoying when Mario flies off a vine, and since you're still shaking the damn remote, he performs a spin-move, which has (on several occasions) prevented me from grabbing onto a different vine in the process.

Zack & Wiki did frustrate me on at least two occasions regarding the Wii-mote use. One involved throwing an object, another involved using the D-pad to "activate" an item being currently held - with no hint whatsoever that such mechanic was in place. It seems a little more one-to-one regarding other uses of Wii Remote - pouring water out of a cup by tilting the Remote, twisting the remote to turn keys, etc. It's certainly better than Metroid Prime 3's having to "pull out" the switches before turning them, since that is one thing that I find the Remote being quite unpredictable with.

To me, however, Zack & Wiki is still game of the year. I've said it before, but I'll repeat myself in case you don't feel like going through the rest of this massive thread - it's really a puzzle-based adventure, similar to Gobliiins series. Since Gobliiins (and Woodruff and Schnibble of Azimuth) are really "bastard" titles of an already unpopular (by today's standards) genre of point-and-click adventures, Z&W resurrected an integral part of my childhood in a faithful-to-the-core presentation of gameplay that is completely puzzle-driven. The comment above reading "you will tire of it quickly" lists all the things that I adore about this title. Although it lists them as bad things, this consistent dedication to sticking with the point-and-click oriented gameplay (while mixing just enough time-based interaction to make it a little less static than most adventures I've played) is the reason why I've felt happiness and joy about the title. But in light of several people voicing opinions similar to that of Sk, I certainly question whether or not my high opinion of Zack & Wiki is fuled by raw nostalgia for the games that are no more.

I'm inclined to opine that if Mario Galaxy's motion controls are frustrating you --I felt they were kept to a minimum and even then were quite accurate-- then Zack & Wiki is a game you could potentially hate very, very much. As much as I love Zack & Wiki, there were several moments at which I found myself annoyed by the lack of precision in the motion controls.

It's a game that encourages you to think outside the box with motion controls but that can also lead to some very awkward response.

I think we should go ahead and remove the "Getting RARE" bit from the thread topic, because way too many people are asking about it, and there isn't really much to be said on the subject.

I hope it's NOT getting rare, and I hope more people will buy it, so that we'll see more games like it. It's especially important to other developers who need to present their "comparables" to publishers. And it'd be nice for them all to have Z&W to be like "hey, check this - point and click, and sold quite well."

RelentlessRolento - I hope you'll like it half as much as I did. :]

You need to make sure that you are pushing the highlighted buttons at the same time. There are four pictures, and you should be pressing the button combination once for each instance.

As for the controls, I found that they were fairly precise, although there were times that the game has trouble picking up "fast" (intuitively fast, relative to the action being performed) motions, which required me to stop, reposition the remote, and repeat the action very slowly. It also has a few motion detection problems, as (for example) when I tilt the remote to exactly where it wants it to be, there are no problems, but once I overtilt slightly, the game doesn't know what to do and snaps it back to the standby position instead of continuing with the action. Rhythmic bell ringing (for upgrades) is also somewhat difficult to do on the first attempt. These partially stem from the remote's quirk of not picking up motion until after the motion has been completed, so I can't really fault the game for these (though it does detract from the experience).

Well, finally made it to Treasure Island, but damned if I have any clue what I'm doing. I'm sure I'll figure it out one part at a time as always, lots of dying in between (6 deaths so far after 39 for the first 13 hours of the game).

I will say that it is annoying when Mario flies off a vine, and since you're still shaking the damn remote, he performs a spin-move, which has (on several occasions) prevented me from grabbing onto a different vine in the process.Very much with you here, especially the last bit. Getting purple coins was way harder than it should have been thanks to that.

It's certainly better than Metroid Prime 3's having to "pull out" the switches before turning them, since that is one thing that I find the Remote being quite unpredictable with.Never had trouble with MP3's actions, though I'm not too sure just how much those relied on actual motion sensing. Whatever. I had trouble with two motions on Z&W (disregarding the bell-ringing minigame) - one on the ice boss, and one on the final boss. Just curious, Colbert - was the D-pad problem you had on the lighter? I thought that was absolute genius.

To me, however, Zack & Wiki is still game of the year.Don't suppose you've gotten around to Fire Emblem 10 yet, have you?

I think I'll give Zack and Wiki a shot. It might hold me over until Sam and Max complete their second season.

As for Mario Galaxy, perhaps my Wii Mote is defective or somehow wonky. It takes a lot of force for the Wii to register that I'm shaking the thing. Shaking is the only action with it that I consistently can't seem to get to register, while everything else works fine. Since I need a second Wii Mote for the rare times The Wife actually wants to play, I'll do a comparison.

MP3 actions - mostly are a breeze, a few times, however, "pulling out" the switch before turning it = for the lose.

Yes, you nailed what I meant by the D-pad. I didn't get stuck, but I recall someone else going like "where do you get the fuel"? or something among those lines. It made sense that someone would be confused by the lack of explanation.

Thanksgiving holidays = lost my wallet. Inside, my TRU $25 GC, and a few other things that are important (like my Green Card, which costs $380 to replace). I would have fucking had it if it wasn't for whatever the fuck. I'm really sad about it, as you can prolly guess. Everything is on hiatus while I'm finishing up my portfolio for masters' school application. Since my field is music composition... I have a lot of people to bug to play my shit, and a few sleepless nights to spend, getting my scores to look fantastic.

Started playing it today, I'm greatly intrigued and like it so far, but is there any way to make the characters STFU? I hate it when one word talking soundbites are applied to almost every word in a conversation. It's a cheap way out of doing actual voice acting work and it gets annoying after a few minutes. Don't know if I'll put up with 40 (which means 80 my time) hours of it.

aaahhhh im trying not to use any hints. I got passed the Volcano level. Now im at the Level in the plane to get the map back. I finally figured out how to get the map, and escape to hide. But then they seal off the top and bottom layers of the plane and it seems impossible to get out without being seen. Especially when they have the hatch closed and a dude right by the button to open it, and there is no way to get out. What pisses me off is ive spent an hour and a half on this level and couldnt even beat it yet. Whats even worse is the things i thought would work, didnt. Like pulling the level for the planes engines to stop before i get the map, so i can escape out of the side door and onto the top of the plane. Nope, cant even go out that door after you get the map. Then i tried to jingle when the frog was on her face and that just lead to it turning into a bomb and me being caught. ARG!

But all in all its a fun game. I always wished games like Silent hill were more like this. I enjoy the puzzels in the games, but not so much the running around, fighting bosses, and stuff like that.

I finally beat that level i was on, no thanks to the hint doll either. I finally gave in and did one of those hint dolls and she told me something i already knew, so i did it and died. Because there was one thing i didnt do before i got to that point. So it was a waste, but i reset the game and got my doll back and did the puzzle on my own and finally figured it out. Since then ive beaten two more levels. This game is great.

Someone above was talking about the noises they make when you play, they dont bother me really. There is one that is annoying though, its when Zak is like sleeping when you leave him alone and he does this strange noise. I end up moving him just so he will stop making that noise.

1. I just fished with him once, line broke or whatever. Got back to the fishing pole again and started fishing and his health was right where i left off. So it was pretty easy.

2. Nah its not him eating the chocolate bar. When he does this noise its like a noise one of the three stooges would make as they exhale air as they sleep. LOL It happened to me during the volcano level with the baby dragon. It would only happen if i didnt move after a while.

1: The alternate fishing bit involves taking a frogbomb to the other side and using it on the fish.
2: The noise to which you refer is a result of Zack overheating. Once you stop overclocking him get out of the fire area, you should never hear it again. Which, I guess, you're already out of.

I just got the last piece of the treasure to complete the pirate. But i was wondering one thing about the puzzle where you got the last piece. Ok so first those things give bats/rain, then snake/ghosts. But then they jump and one does not. Which tells you which color circle you are supposed to stand. The second time there is a ghost head in the chest of the color you are supposed to stand in. Finally the third one i have no idea what you are supposed to look for. The only thing i can figure out is that its always red. Is this correct or was i just lucky?

PS. is there anything you have to do to get those special NES looking icons? I got one in the level where you fight the squid on the boat level after you complete the pirate. But after i got it i tried the same place again and i couldnt get it to pop up.

Im in treasure island. So i got the frog over by barbaros, so he whips the monkey to change a block into an enemy and he changes the frog into a bomb while he is at it. Barbaros went running and i pulled the rope and he tripped. Then he got up and changed me into one of those blocks. There wasnt even any time to do anything. What a load of shit.

Im really tempted to look at a walkthrough. I mean this game is fun, but sometimes you can only go over a level so many times.

I just beat the game, thought the ending was great. But there are a few things i need answers for.

When you go to each main level, that leads you do all the other levels within it, there always seems to be one missing in the south east area. Is there hidden levels there?

Also how do i go about getting the hints within the game, that clue me in on getting secret treasures in each level?

One last thing, once you get a secret treasure do you have to complete the level to save it? Or can you just pause go back to the hideout and it will save it?

The only one that I had trouble with was the second to last one (Wily's Theme 1 from Megaman 2) because of all the half notes. One tip I can give is that make sure you aren't accidentally shaking the wiimote twice every note (like if you're bringing it back too quickly), watch his eyes. Well i ended up getting them all, and while i was writing them down on my notepad for easy refrence, i noticed the error. In the Midieval Castle section it goes from Ancient Lore VII to Ancient Lore IX. Seems they just skipped over 8 all together. It continues to XI, but there are only 10 Lores for the Midieval Castle.

And in case anyone was wondering, it seems that 2 of the Western Volcano Lores are for the air ship level. I found that strange.

Anyway, right now im trying to get all the hidden treasures now that i collected all the hints. Plus now that i seem to have collected all the treasure you can from that one bunny, now all i keep coming up with is those dolls you can use to bring you back to life.

Hmmm....so i could be messing up because i move it, and then back to where i started from? Should i move it forward and stop when a note hits and then move it back when the next note hits? And when there is a long note should i just keep moving it in the same direction till its done, or do i just keep wiggling it back and forth?

Watch his eyes to know whether or not, you're messing it up because of that. If you bring it back to the original position a little slower, you should be fine.
With the long notes, you have to wiggle it back and forth quickly.

Anyone else think those music skeleton missions are almost unbeatable? Maybe im holding the controller wrong, but i hold it up like i would do when shooting a cannon, and then flick it when im supposed to. But it seems very hard.I was having trouble with the half notes in some of the songs -- I ended up just shaking the living shit out of the Wii remote during long sections with half notes and I would pass the song. I think the game counts a "hit" note much higher than a "missed" note counts against you.

My wrist hurt the next day. My first ever injury sustained while playing a video game. Thanks a lot, Bonelich.

So, I'm on the last level, and I need help The part with the anchor. Apparently a lot of people are having trouble throwing it, but I can't even pick it up. I assume the anchor is the thing to the right of the cannon with the crank. When I check it, the only thing I can grab is the crank and Wiki says something about "Maybe there's a switch we need to press first. None of the walkthroughs say anything between catching the first and throwing the anchor, so I'm lost.

Also, for Bonelich, using very small motions is best.

Just click the anchor, not the base.

Believe me, I've been trying that. The only time the pointer turns red is on the crank. I realize that this should be simple, but I can't for the life of me get it to work. It frustrates me more to know that I got through the rest of this game with little to no problems, and now the simplest thing is holding me up.

Do I click the anchor before of after the zoom in?

Throwing it was a whole other issue (I think the trick is to hold down A when you make the throwing motion, but I never knew for sure)

The Crotch
01-05-2008, 01:10 AM
I did not hold down "A". I think. According to MarioColbert, you have to get it swinging nice and good, and when you make the throwing motion, point your arm (and the remote) straight forward and leave it there for longer than you think you should.

This is currently #151 on the Amazon rankings, which seems a bit high. My recollection is that it didnt break the top #50 even when it first came out (or something like that).

The flame is dim, but its not going out. It might be benefiting from the always massive volume of new Wii owners, and the miniscule fraction of them that will buy the game.

Need help with the Ice Level: I assume I need to get the frog bomb to finally break the large ice "chandelier" since the drill and icicle/hammer can only make a chip so big in it. I think I have done everything else, except find a use for the umbrella and snake grabber. So do one of those items help me get the frog down so that I can turn him into a bomb?

And my son was able to get the first skeleton music twice (once for each of our files--I stink at that). Disappointed that the box was empty except for a Wiki "upgrade"... Is that useful later?

Your assumption is correct. For the two items:
Bat Umbrella: Used to hammer away at the ice the slow way. Not needed.
Slither Gripper: You turn the gripper back into a snake at the base of the frog, and it will enter the hole and chase the frog down.
There is one more thing you'll need to do to complete the level. You need the saw.Use the drill to get it.

Thanks Crotch and G33. I had the saw, and used it to cut through part of the ice and my son actually did use the umbrella to beat the level on his file. I was on the right track because I tried to reach into the hole with the snake grabber, but didn't think to try changing him back into a snake. I was out of Dolls because I only had one and she told me something very obvious that I had already done in a prior attempt, but I asked for the hint before I had re-tried everything and she told me something I knew. :-(

Anyway, my son and I both *love* this game. :)

You know what I realized about this game.
Yes, it's amazing. It's great. But it's one of them games that it's hard to re-play. I'm not talking about getting 100%, collecting everything. If you were to re-play it, it probably won't be as amazing because you already figured out the puzzles. Sigh.

But then again, maybe if you re-play it in like.. a year or so it'd be ok.
Anyone else agree?
I mean, for me, it was the figuring everything out was the fun part.

I mean, for me, it was the figuring everything out was the fun part. For the most part, but there are multiple ways to solve some puzzles, so there is always that.

My one complaint about the game was the oracle dolls. They really need to fix that system up if they do a sequel. I never used them because unless you are completely clueless right at the beginning of a level, odds are you won't get anything useful. It seems as if the first doll you use in a level will just tell you how to accomplish the first task, and so on, whether or not you've already completed the task.

Fortunately, due to the lower development for the Wii, Capcom probably only needed to sell ~75,000 copies of this game worldwide to break even (a typical $50 PS2 game breaks even at 50,000 copies, according to Nikkei). If Capcom breaks even and notices all the flowing reviews, they might opt to greenlight a sequel with a bigger ad budget...

I picked this game up based solely on word of mouth here, and was skeptical at first. But after giving the game a chance, I saw what everybody else saw - incredibly good puzzles wrapped in a very fun, cute style. Some of the puzzles will really have you scratching your head for a while, so it helps that the game is not grating when you're just sitting and staring at the screen for a while.

Finally started this today. The Wii Remote is a piece of shit. When trying to turn the crank in the flute level, or pull the fishing rod in the fish level, I am not moving the controller at all, and yet the game thinks I am. And when I'm flailing wildly, on-screen the object I am controlling is completely still. I can't imagine a more frustrating situation.

Also in the fish level, the guy makes a snoozing sound, and you're supposed to know that means that the enemy can find and kill you? And you're supposed to know that the sound of chirping birds is the sound when you're safe? Fail.

Just beat the bullshit airship level. Is there a way to beat the stage without shooting off the hangar door beforehand they close it? Because I didn't, but the game insisted I hadn't screwed up and could still finish the level. Of course when I tried to fly out, I died. Which is BS. Also the game made it very clear that if I walked into any room with a pirate in it I would lose, but then threw that rule out the window at the end of the stage. Very annoying.

I'm not sure what to make of the bolted-on "emotional" ending, but it was a fun ride. Dunno if I want to go back for the hidden treasures or get back to Super Mario Galaxy now.

And to pete5883, I think the rule is that you'll die if you get seen by one of the goons. Sneaking behind them (like when you walk on the propeller and re-enter the airship) is perfectly fine.

Seemed kinda obvious to me. Invisible person + visible object = visible person.
Or at least creepy ghost carrying object.

I picked this up two days ago at EB for $30 (-$26 in credit from MoH:Heroes 2 that I picked up for ~$27 at the TRU B2G1 sale ... and I normally don't trade my games in, so I really wasn't a fan), and at 8 hours in, I am loving this game. Thanks for all the hype in this thread!

Some of the puzzle elements have really stumped me, and I like it. ;-)

Also, Bonelich was really annoying me, particularly the sustained bell shaking part, but I finally got the rhythm to it and can nail it. I don't, however, think it was great design to have the margin of error so small with the shaking ... at first I was shaking it fairly fast and wouldn't get it ... as it just wasn't fast enough.

Yeah, I just didn't think, at the time, that the game would be that picky. If you want to get really picky, it's a statue. How am I supposed to know how much logic a living statue is capable of? All I know is, stepping within a purple section of the floor causes it to kill me.

Actually, I'd say the thing that bugged me the most was on the level with the broom-wielding snowman. Why the fuck do I have to find a large mound of snow to toss on the ice? Why not - you know - the snow on the fucking ground? It would have been a lot easier if I had done the levels in a different order - I'd have known that you could turn goons into totems. Still, it was a little ridiculous.

The snow's not the problem, it's the shovel to toss it with.

I don't recall that bit being tricky. What was so hard about that?

Never mind, brain fart.

In any event, I think the reason you needed a huge pile of snow was because Jeeves wouldn't react to a small amount of snow; otherwise he'd be sweeping up snowflakes until the end of time.

Beat the game last night. Having insufficient instructions on how to use the anchor was not cool. I about half enjoyed it, but boy am I relieved to never have to play this game again.

I don't believe that for a second... it really sold 300K? Is that worldwide or just NA?

It's from Capcom's financial report. The Kotaku post (http://kotaku.com/353570/umbrella-chronicles-outsells-zack--wiki-31-tears-stream-down-our-faces) doesn't say if it's worldwide or NA only, but I'm sure it's world wide.

The game sold pretty well in the UK.

People on other sites are using the numbers to prove how the game bombed, but personally I think those are awesome numbers. You have to put in perspective as to the sales numbers for other adventure games, and also remember that Zack and Wiki was an underdog from the start, and had very little advertising, along with a horrible name and kiddie appeal. All things considered, I think 300,000 is a success.

All that matters is that it's enough of a success to generate a sequel, and I think 300k does that.

I honestly don't think 300K is enough to garner a sequel... I'm guessing on average 500K is still the break even point (even if Wii is cheaper to develop for, the motion control R&D probably shoots costs back up a bit). And even if it was less, I doubt it's anywhere near 300K.

I mean, this is Capcom after all. They have huge franchises that always sell like crazy (RE, Street Fighter, DMC, Mega Man, etc.). I honestly doubt they'll be impressed by Z&W's sales... considering REUC is almost at a million copies already.

I wouldn't be surprised by a sequel, nor would I be surprised if there wasn't one. It probably depends more on what their budget was and what their perceived added revenue for a sequel would be.

(1) It's shipped, not sold.

(2) It's for Japan and North America only. Z&W was not released in Europe yet when those numbers were compiled.

A typical PS2 game breaks even at 50,000 copies. There's no way on earth that R&D for motion controls would eat 900% of the budget! :???:

A worst-case estimate would peg 100,000 copies for the break-even point, IMO.

And even if it was less, I doubt it's anywhere near 300K.
I dunno, I hear it's doing much better in Europe (where point-and-click adventures have been more popular than in the States). I think a worldwide LTD of 200K wouldn't be unreasonable.

And for the record, Capcom does have a history of building franchises out of games with less-than-blockbuster starts: MegaMan, Phoenix Wright...

those are fantastic numbers, and with a small title like zack and wiki you have to think the 300k shipped is going to be fairly close to sold. I doubt the initial runs were greater than 100k, meaning they have gone back to press to meet demand and the sell through is going to be north of 250k.

For an original ip, in a "dead" genre on a system not yet known for great numbers for third parties, congrats capcom.
This easily could have been a 50k bomb.
I'd be shocked if capcom of all companies didn't pump out at least two more of these.

It's only 50K? Are you serious?

EGM reported it was like 500K and that was only like a year or two ago. It couldn't have dropped that much, that quickly...:-k

If that were true, tons of developers would have folded by now.

500k is a lot of copies needed to break even. Not all games require huge budgets like Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy.

300,000 * 40 = 12,000,000 $

and I can tell you right now Z&W did not cost 12 million dollars to make.

Of course. I don't have a link offhand, but about a year ago, the Japanese financial group Nikkei worked out that the average PS2 game needed to sell 50,000 copies to break even, while the average PS3 game needed to sell 500,000 copies due to the greater expense of HD assets and whatnot.

Since the Wii is closer to the PS2 in regards to performance and graphics, it's not a stretch to say that a Wii game will break even around 50,000-100,000 copies sold -- and anything higher than that (200K+) would be considered pure profit.

I have no idea how Capcom's numbers are for Zack and Wiki, but if they sold 250,000 copies (out of the 300,000 copies shipped), and they noticed all the glowing reviews it got, I'm hoping they will be motivated to put in a bit more effort for a sequel and try to turn it into a franchise.

And a sequel can't cost as much since the groundwork for the game has already been laid down.

I'm stuck near the flaming treasure chest level (3rd mission or so). The darn skull head wants to shake the remote everytimes I see a "<" on that spinning wheel minigame. I never seen that much red eye balls in my life. I have horrible timing in this minigame. What do those blue skigglely lines mean anyways?

I started playing this last night, and I'm already stuck on the 3rd mission (with the goblins and flaming chest). I put the mushrooms in the soup, but I can't figure out how to get the rod thing down from the pole. I thought I could throw a coconut at the gong, but no dice. Can somebody give me a hint? :D

I'm trying to figure out how to ask this without coming off as a troll.

How in god's name can anyone like this godawful game where you can't even look at anything without being killed (as soon as I went into the goblin stage, they came and killed me), and are expected to know how every puzzle is solved the second you enter the stage? First stage after dying trying to look around the treasure room had me afraid to walk around, the collossi stage had me afraid to touch anything. I had to get it out of the house before I became tempted to ship it back with a bomb in it to whoever made the goddamn thing.

And it's not the puzzle/adventuring thing that pisses me off. I loved the Oddworld series. Hell, I don't even know how many times I died in Abe's Oddysey, but this game... the way it handles... everything. Fuck it.

Really, it's ultra-hidden.
