I found a bunch of non GH versions of PS2 and Xbox games at my local Sears. I thought about picking up a couple of copies of each - one to play and one to save. Are the non-GH versions "worth" any more in terms of trade value?

Depends on what games they are.

Think about this for a minute. GH games are games that sell extremely well. That being said there is a huge availablility of almost every single GH game out there somewhere. Why would anyone consider a GH game "rare" or "worth" any more than the other version?

The non-gh part usually isn't what makes the game "rare" or "worth" anything, it's the sealed part in conjunction with that.

It all depends on the type of game it is. If a game is a wide know franchise with high demand, the original copies will generally net more value in long run regardless how big the print run such as final fantasy, metal gear, god of war or kingdom hearts if their sealed.

I don't think they'll affect trade-in values at retail stores that accept them, but they'll fetch higher values among people when you're selling on here or ebay

All I know is that in our very own trading forum, people advertise that they have non-GH versions of games, etc. And people also seem to ask when inquiring about the items listed. Hell, there was even a thread about how to tell quickly if the game you're getting is a GH version or just a normal one with a red sticker on it. So there must be something desirable about it.

Given a choice between 2 versions of the game, which would YOU take? Why?

The games I'm specifically referring to are God of War, Ratchet: Deadlocked and Jak 3.

Personally I don't care as long as I obtain the game. Games are for playing, not for investing.

There is nothing more desirable about it other than some people want the original artwork without the red stripe (or other GH packaging). In some cases the GH version of the game often has more content (DMC3 comes to mind here).

And all of those games you mentioned are extremely common. There is a reason why they went greatest hits in the first place. If you "hold on" to a copy of GoW for the "future" you're going to be suprised when it's worth the same amount of money you paid for it today (if you are lucky). Non-GH versions do not fetch that much of a "premium" over a GH version.

The game that people really care about are Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Kingdom Hearts sealed non GH, which some people will pay decent money for. For Ratchet: Deadlocked and Jak 3 people wont pay more than a few dollars for sealed non GH version then a sealed GH copy. I mean local Target still got tons on non GH Deadlocked. Unless it is a RPG or a series with some diehard followers, it isnt worth the trouble.

The real value you should count on is people wanting the non-gh version in trades. They are more likely to give up stuff and give you a better deal some times when you have a non-gh version. That being said you shouldthink about how common a game is and how big of a blockbuster it is. I think games with lots of sequels wouldn't really hold their value (Gran Turismo, Burnout, Splinter Cell, WWE games) but games that only appeared once or never really got a proper sequel are more valuable (Final Fantasy series, ICO, and Shadow of the Colossus).

Well, I picked up 2 copies of God of War and put them on eBay. Gotta fund my new found game addiction! I figure if they don't sell, I can take them back.
