This isn't really mind-blowing, but I find it an exquisite period at the end of a trend of gun-control and knife-control laws in Britain, and hopefully, to any history-deprived children who still cling to the delusion that fascism is a disease that affects only the Right, it will be abject proof to the contrary.

Imagine if that were to happen here under a Republican administration...

I, for one, would at least be happy that the Republican administration was so stupid as to not disarm us before kicking down our doors.

That's... that's...
Damn. I've always been of the opinion that England (yes, the entire country) was crazy, but damn man, that's crazy shit.
and hopefully, to any history-deprived children who still cling to the delusion that fascism is a disease that affects only the Right, it will be abject proof to the contrary. As is that. Define "fascism".

That the government has declared itself the right to kick down your door for unpaid fines?

That the government has declared itself the right to kick down your door for unpaid fines?
"The Cult of Tradition", combining cultural syncretism with a rejection of modernism (often disguised as a rejection of capitalism).
"The Cult of Action for Action's Sake", which dicatates that action is of value in itself, and should be taken without intellectual reflection. This, says Eco, is connected with anti-intellectualism and irrationalism, and often manifests in attacks on modern culture and science.
"Disagreement is Treason" - fascism devalues intellectual discourse and critical reasoning as barriers to action.
"Fear of Difference", which fascism seeks to exploit and exacerbate, often in the form of racism or an appeal against foreigners and immigrants.
"Appeal to a Frustrated Middle Class", fearing economic pressure from the demands and aspirations of lower social groups.
"Obsession With a plot" and the hyping-up of an enemy threat. This often involves an appeal to xenophobia or the identification of an internal security threat. He cites Pat Robertson's book The New World Order as a prominent example of a plot obsession.
"Pacifism is Trafficking With the Enemy" because "Life is Permanent Warfare" - there must always be an enemy to fight.
"Contempt for the Weak" - although a fascist society is elitist, everybody in the society is educated to become a hero.
"Selective Populism" - the People have a common will, which is not delegated but interpreted by a leader. This may involve doubt being cast upon a democratic institution, because "it no longer represents the Voice of the People".
"Newspeak" - fascism employs and promotes an impoverished vocabulary in order to limit critical reasoning.Critiscize the New Labour party and Tony Blair all you want, but please don't muddy words like that.
You're starting to sound like a leftist.

... uh... sure. I'll just call it the proper end result of socialism then.

Well, I could also call it communism in action, but, really, communism? Socialism? All the same thing.
I'm not suprised. A friend of mine who lives in Leicester, England, says that everywhere you look, there's a security camera, and now they're installing microphones and loudspeakers to the cameras as well. :[

I'm from the Uk and I doubt this has got a snowballs chance in Hell of getting through Parliament.
The UK is the country where the Government didn't have the balls to ban fox hunting and if you're drunk driving and kill someone you'd be unlucky to get much worse than a 6 month driving ban.
Never gonna happen.
