What the hell am I missing? Was I simply sleeping when I started this game? I popped this in (for the first time ever) about 30 min ago, watched the beautiful beginning and got immersed. Then, to my surprise, I was in control with NO direction given whatsoever. I roamed the earth (following the "light" by using the "O" button) and never found anything but a save point.
I absolutely abhor guides, so I refuse to look up what to do in the first 3 minutes of a game. I'm just not sure how I could have missed how to play it...
Any ideas/help/guidance?

follow the light to the first boss. it kinda gives u hints. cuz it zooms in to a cinematic sequence (very short) once u get into the area. and then it gives u hints on the control (cuz u have to climb up the side of the mountain). if u want more specific details i can tell u. i think u missed the first area, cuz i dont' remember any save points on route to the first boss.
i actually just started this yesterday. i'm blown away.

I followed the lights for a half hour and it just kept leading me straight into walls - I guess I don't understand the whole follow the light concept.
And btw, I definately found a couple of save points already (cuz I saved...)
Got to keep heading toward the beam of light from your sword. For the first colossus, once it looks like you can't make it any further on your horse you got to go on foot and climb some vines on a wall. Climb up and jump over a ledge or two. You'll find it eventually.

Wait, I'm retarded - you can climb vines?
Wow...I tried jumping over walls and hitting R1 and stuff, but my guy just runs in mid air and falls....
Guess I'll try climbing vines again and see if it works this time
Sorry for being retarded.

make sure ur beam of light converges when ur following it. its basically south of the initial temple. i think there are a few steps at the base of the area where u have to climb up.
yeah, i never saved until after the first colosus. they make a save point at the first temple after u kill the first boss.

i'm thinking about getting this game... if i enjoyed GoW, will i enjoy SotC? Is it difficult to locate a saving option (in Gow, it's not that bad)?

oh there are plenty more where that came from..
I thought the first flying colossus was pretty cool
Give it some time. Later in the game, when you come to walls and your light shines through them, you'll have to run around the mountain to find what's hidden on the other side. A big part of the game is the actual getting to the boss.
These are the kinds of games to be praised. If we didn't have games like "Shadow of the Colossus," we'd have even more iterations of the same game. Thank god Sony decided to take a chance on a novel idea. Great gameplay, great action fused with problem solving, great immersion/isolation, and a genuinely touching storyline and attention to detail. I appreciated how everytime I defeated a colossus, a new dove appeared in the temple.

so, what type of game is SotC? Mostly puzzle? Slash and smash? Does it require some "anal" controlling like GoW?
I know i know, i should just read the game reviews and what not.... but since this thread is about someone just started the game, it's pretty much what i want to know....

It's liek a 3D puzzler. Basicallly you find these Big Ass Colossi and beat them but climbing them and striking there weak points for massive damage. You have to think on where to start to climb them, How to get up to there top point or where to find there weak spots.
Amazing Game Dude. Pick it up!

just about every colossus had that to it. my favorites were the next to last colossus, the water one, the flying one in the desert( best freakin boss battle ever) and that flying one in the water ruins. i can see how this game wouldnt be for everyone Ico was the same way which is why we were pretty lucky to get a sequel to ico but eh if you can get into it youll find a hell of a game there.
i think alot of gamers would have trouble with it because unlike alot of games it doesnt lead you by the hand as much youre kinda dropped into this world and its up to you how to play the game or what youll do in it. once i found out hwo you could i spent most of my time boosting my stats and exploring wherever i could.i wish someone would make a zombie game with that kind of freedom.

to preface this post i must first say that i loved Ico
things that dampened my enthusiasm for SotC were the technical/framerate issues and the "story".
also, i think they could have given better "hints" after you've been running around for a good 15-30 minutes trying to figure what the hell to do.
the final colossi was a major pain, and kind of a let down honestly.
lastly, the way the main character ran/moved annoyed me. very unnatural looking.
but it was still quite good ;)

i think the hints were pretty decent. maybe later they get harder.
i've done 12 colossi so far. and the hints have been quite straight forward.
combine with the hints u get at the start of the quest, and the stuff they tell u in the middle of the fight. i haven't had any problems figuring out what to do. i almost think the game is too easy.
so far i think the colossi have been pretty interesting and unique. i think i like the huge ones better. some of them were quite small in comparrison.

I can see how not knowing about the characters ability to climb can put a damper on things. Climbing things is like 90% of the gameplay. ;)
I also like how the game doesnt hit you over the head with how to play it. Sometimes I like to figure out stuff on my own. Theres always faqs and message boards if you get stuck.

If you get stuck in the beginning, you will most likely get stuck a lot later on in the game. Especially, trying to figure out how to get on the colossus for each of them.

Was that the four legged turtle lookin guy that lives in a cave? That guy gave me fits! I had to go read a faq to find out how to beat him.

Yeah that was one I had to run to my computer to figure out. I wanted to beat it without assistance but I gave it at least an hour before I practically gave up. The other difficult one was the turtle with the geysers.
This is my favorite game for the PS2. The atmosphere and graphical style are awesome. The controls get cumbersome at times but there were also times I was swinging around a colossus like a monkey. The moments when you first see a colossus, first figure out how to get on a colossus, and then get that final stab in are the among the best in video game history. I can't wait for the sequel.
