CAGcast #73 - ** out of ****
A truly half-ass episode, but thankfully no interview this week. The one highlight was the discussion about Earth Defense Force... finally you discuss a niche game instead of constantly focusing on the mainstream games. A huge weakness of your podcast is that you guys hardly ever review games. Cheapy talks about Rail Fan, Earth Defense Force... and Wombat talks about what, exactly? Oblivion? Welcome to last year. At the very least he should be the "lab rat" for Xbox Live Arcade or Virtual Console games, playing them all and telling us why they are worth it or not. Maybe he could even be forced to purchase all the gamer pics and themes! Surely he can come up with a few bucks. That's my suggestion for a new segment -- "Lab Rat" starring Wombat. He's too broke to buy real games, so he's forced to play and review micro transactions! Beyond Oasis - 8 dollars, I hate it! Legend of Kage - 5 dollars, I hate the Virtual Console!
Some quick suggestions:
Cheapy -- If you want to lose 15 lbs in 2-4 weeks, try Atkins -- eat as much eggs, sausage, bacon, salad, steak, hamburger, veggies, diet soda, water that you want. Just no sugar, bread. You'll lose all your weight within 2-4 weeks. Eat steak every day. Shove that steak in your mouth while you play with your RoboCop figures! Lay off that processed stuff. Get in shape by June, not July! Around day 3 it's going to be torture, but get through that and you'll be riding high.
Wombat -- I'm just joking with you half the time... but Lab Rat would be a great segment, admit it! Better than you talking about music licensing (wrong), or about why they should remake games with better graphics because they're not backwards compatible (Jade Empire... which IS backwards compatible -ROTFL)! And why don't you just rent games to review, from Gamefly or Games N Flix? I'd love to hear you review Bionicle Heroes! I love when you cry about bad games like a little bitch!

Contradiction much? Why is it better if he talks about games that are 20 years old rather than one that is 1 year old?
I don't think the show was ever intended to be a source of breaking reviews, isn't that what we have; Gamespot, IGN, 1up, PC Gamer magazine, EGM, Edge, OXM, OPM, Nintendo Power and Games for Windows for?
Would it really be better for 2 guys to try and cover all the lousy games that come out each week? Isn't it better to have something a little different, hearing tales of two guys and how video games affect their lives etc.?

Just listened to #73 -- I'm kind of a comic book nerd myself and I echo Wombat's review of Justice League Heroes.
I played it after running through Marvel Alliance and found myself in a weird situation. Generally I like the marvel universe much more than the DC universe. Ultimate alliance is a good game...but does a lot of the bum rushing fights when you have 4 heroes fighting....it's hard to make sense of everything at times...plus it got old after x-men II rise of apacolypse
Justice League manages the fights better...I actually could use some thinking in fighting bosses...
So ideally for me would be marvel universe in a justice league type of game...

Because he's talked about Oblivion a hundred times, and always downplays the offerings on Live Arcade and the VC. 8 dollars!? Oh no! The show drags because they don't really talk about much at all. The show really has no direction -- it's not about cheap games, deals, game reviews, or much of anything except the new "big" release. What is the purpose of it? Wombat can't even afford any new games to talk about! At least CheapyD adds some variety with Rail Fan, Earth Defense Force, and other titles. He's holding it together, that's for sure.

Don't listen. Problem solved.
I listen to many gaming podcasts, good (Gamespot) and bad (IGN). I'm sure the hosts of any of these shows don't take positive or negative comments too seriously (or at least they shouldn't). It's just one opinion, after all. That said, even though the CAGcast is amateurish, poorly developed, badly written, horribly planned, sloppily executed, and has a co-host who can't afford any games to talk about, it's something you have to watch/listen to. It's the Superman IV (or in Cheapy language, the RoboCop 3) of podcasts. I'll continue to listen, because even though the show sucks, I'm still a fan.

I listen to several gaming podcasts too: IGN is AFK, IGN Gamescoop, IGN's Wii-k in Review, 1up Yours, EGM Live*, GFW Radio, Retronauts, Gamespot's Hotspot, The Major Nelson Show, the Joystiq Podcast, Podtoid, the PC Gamer Podcast and Evil Avatar Radio. Plus, of course, the CAGcast.
Of them all i think CAGcast is the best. There are so many out there that cover the same news and reviews issues that I really don't need another. CAG has something a little different.
As far as saying that CAGcast is "amateurish, poorly developed...", that is ironic considering Cheapy's appearances on Podtoid and the Joystiq Podcast. I know he was trying particularly to help out the D-toid guys, who have had quite some trouble with the quality of their show.

Podtoid and Joystiq are the absolute bottom, you're right. The CAGcast is better than those two. Major Nelson's show is more professional but so canned. Gamespot is by far the best. EGM Live - how much of those hosts can you take? I like the content, though. I like Retronauts as well. My favorite podcasts are probably Blast the Right, GOP Exposed, Gamespot, Retronauts, and Major Nelson. I'd put the CAGcast below EGM but above 1up Yours and of course Podtoid and Joystiq. The Video Games Show, I might put that above the CAGcast as well, they cover more material and don't get side tracked as much as the CAGcast.

+1 meatspin for Wombat
Despite my reservations on joining digg (I inexplicably dislike kevin rose), this offer of mental truama on another human being has forced my hand.
and to be fair, I'm working on an itunes review. so no host shall be spared.
Also Cheapy did you notice how many 360s were hooked up for the panoramic view on forza 2? was it like in the original where you needed 3x game, system and monitor to pull that off?

Haven't listened to it, haven't even downloaded it yet, but this one wins for "Most Disturbing Subtitle", hands down. I immediately visualized some distant cousin of Pennywise that crawled in a drunken stupor from the Deadlights and possessed Michael Jackson circa 1988. Or maybe the other way around.

Interesting note on meatspin....once you watch it for a certain amount of spins, it pops up with a message that says something like "Congratulations, you are officially gay"
Not to defend my heterosexual being....I just kind of left it up on my roomates computer for him to walk in on.

Wombat is right. Major Nelson is an informercial. HE's viral marketing. New-age advertising. ...he probably has a MySpace page too which tells you about the 360.
btw, The Wii has 2x the memory that the GameCube had and the GC was home to RE4 and Metroid Prime. Also the memory in the Wii (like the GC) is very responsive fast ram which I believe is faster than the competition's ram which helps make up for the smaller amount. And the Wii doesn't need the amount of ram of the competition because it doesn't support hi-def.
And like you guys said I wouldn't want 360/PS3 ports on the Wii for the most part.
Actually I think the importance of porting across all systems is over-rated. Gears of WAr is only on one platform and it's probably the biggest seller of the last 6 months. Look at Zelda:TP too. It's probably the 2nd biggest selling title. God of War 2? Top selling title also.
To me making a title specifically for one system means (in general) you can make a better overall title and that imo translates to higher sales. IT's not always the case of course, but I see plenty of exclusives that are top sellers. I think concentrating on one platform means giving the consumer the most out of a platform for their money. I think also that resources used to port titles could be better applied to the exclusive which would result in a more robust/polished game which again means higher sales.
THQ recently announced they are going to move to a strategy along these lines.

CheapyD & Wombat
Sounds like CheapyD has already dealt with the problem of hitting the big three ohh. But Wombat the only thing you really can do to take your mind off the fact that you are now thirty, is get drunk and go to the nudie bar. But hey Happy 30th Birthday!
CheapyD, trying to drop some weight so you can look good for all the “want to be porn stars” in LA when you go there for the E for Everybody Show? Got to curb the carbs! Instead of starting a thread you should document your weight loss on Twitter. As for the gut sucking, I think that is pretty much the standard for most guys once they get over 28. Hell look at David Hasshoff, he must have the muscle control of a Shaloin Monk, to suck in his gut and hold it in like that during all the beach running scenes in Baywatch.
Major McNelson, Actually that is pretty funny! Once again Wombat portrays Major Nelson as the puppet of Microsoft. While I do think this is the underlying theme of his Podcast, he does talk allot about enjoying his Nintendo DS, and he does like to play the Wii with his wife. After typing that sentence I can only imagine how many sexually oriented jokes will come out of that statement. But when Wombat referred to his show as an Infomercial, I kind of sat back and started thinking about that and how that is actually a pretty fair comparison.
Shit, you got to play Forza2 already...with the wheel and pedals. I'm jealous.

I am a computer programmer by trade. I do not write video games, but I do write computer software. I can tell you that the amount of memory is much more important then the type. The difference between types of memory is far less, then the difference between having double the amount.
But I do agree with you that developers need to get away from doing the Madden, Splinter Cell, and other cross platform games. Developers should be looking at what is working with the Nintendo DS and imitate that business model. Madden, Need for Speed, Tiger Woods and all the other cross platform games almost always look horrible and play even worse on the DS. Now the unique ideas like Hotel Dusk, Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, host of other unique games are available on DS. This is the market that the Wii needs to go after to be successful. Because like CheapyD stated, anytime you see a cross platform game, the first thing I think of is WOW this look like crap! It is fun to play but it looks like crap! I have Tiger Woods Golf 2007 for the XBox 360 and the Wii. The Wii is a blast to play, but it almost makes my eyes bleed.
r0xjo0
I sort of agree with you about the show getting a little vulgar. I work with a bunch of old women (wow tell me how much it sucks to be me!), and I find myself turning the CAGCast down when I listen to it and having to replay parts of the show because I have to keep the volume really low. But also listen to any of the 1UP shows. Retronauts, and especially 1Up Yours could make a sailor blush the language is so bad. While I really enjoy listening to these shows I almost wish they would make a show that bleeped out all the swear words, because I am always waiting for someone to file a complaint about the content I listen to.
Lspear76
Pretty tough on the little furry guy. “I love when you cry about bad games like a little bitch!” I think Wombat tries to embrace the true Cheap Ass Gamer spirit.
Also when pushing the Atkins diet be careful. While it is a fast way to lose weight there are some things to keep in mind. Talk to a doctor or at very least look up some information on the web on how to do this safely. You can really screw up your kidneys staying on the Atkins diet too long.

Brings up a good point. I do not want to hear the same news from different podcasters. The thing that makes this show really interesting is that this is CheapyD and Wombats thoughts about games. And when you find a Podcaster that shares many of your same opinions, I think that is one of the main reasons you listen to them over and over again.
Although it would be nice if they talked about a wider variety of games.
Since the topic of different Podcasts was brought up I have to agree that Joystiq is one of the worst Podcasts out there. Which to me is shocking because I think it is one of the better video game blogs around in my mind. Ludwig, sense of humor is completely lost on me. And Chris Grant while a very knowledgeable person just does not have the on air presence of either CheapyD, or Wombat. The thing about 1Up Retronauts is those guys have played allot of games over the years. I mean I thought I have played allot of games, but it is nothing compared to them. They pull out crazy S#*T out every week that I have never even heard of. That is one thing I really like about that Podcast. I just wish they would tone down the naughty words. Major Nelson’s show is very well done, but I think the problem is that everything is great and all the LIVE arcade titles are awesome and any new 360 game is a must have according to him. Well I am sure they are when you do not have to pay for them. I do enjoy listening to his show because of the interviews and hearing about some things that are going on inside Microsoft.

Hey CheapyD,
As usual, great podcast--I listen to roughly 6 gaming podcasts a week, and the CAG podcast has rapidly become one of my favorites. Keep up the great work.
Anyway, other than being a passionate CAG, I'm also a Food Scientist (Go Penn State!)--I thought I'd offer you a few weight loss tips that are easy to follow and work well for a gamer's life-style:
1) stick to recommended serving sizes
2) if you crave sugar, eat it in the form of lactose (eg. low-fat dairy products) or fructose / natural sugar (eg. fruit)
3) do your best to eat 5 small, healthy meals a day, which keeps your metabolism stimulated
4) stick to complex carbs (eg. whole grains) and fiber--starches (eg. potatoes) and simple carbs (eg. white bread) are pretty much junk food
5) avoid anything fried, or at least limit it to once a week
6) when at a restaurant, ask to opt out of french fries or potato chips as a side dish--substitute fruit, vegetables, or even coleslaw
7) go for brisk, long walks with Mrs. Cheapy, especially after meals--this will burn calories and stimulate your metabolism
8) don't go to bed with a completely empty stomach, especially if you've adopted an exercise routine--eat a healthy, light snack a few hours before bed, or your metabolism will slow down, and may even enter "starvation mode" and begin attacking muscle mass
9) hard-boiled eggs make great snacks
10) don't over-load on protein (or fat, duh)--your body can only utilize a certain amount, and the remainder takes longer to burn off than carbohydrates do
11) take a men's multivitamin every day
12) you can never have enough vegetables, especially green, fresh ones; but note: iceburg lettuce (eg. crispy / crunchy leaves) has ZERO nutritional value, so it doesn't count
13) don't waste away while watching TV--do dumbbell exercises (eg. arm curls), abdominal exercises (eg. crunches) or even just stretch
14) last but not least: sex is awesome for your metabolism and it can be great exercise; but it can also make you hungry afterwards, so snack smart
...well, hope this helps! Oh, and remember: be sure to make your diet and exercise routines enjoyable, flexible, and easy to accomodate--this will help you to avoid making excuses not to do them, and might even make them fun :-)
Keep up the kick-ass podcast!

Hey guys,
Loved the CAGcast. Just started listening to it and I'm enjoying it.
Wombat is definitely right about Major Nelson. He's a walking informercial for all things XBox. If you are an Xbox 360 fanboy, Nelson is The Man because he gets some of the best insider info on the 360. Other than that, he's pretty much useless as a commentator on video gaming in general. Remember, he's a MS employee and he's not gonna say anything remotely bad about the people who signs his paycheck. Ever since the Guitar Hero DLC fiasco, I've lost respect for Nelson. He can say all he wants about Activision setting the pricing for the song packs but nothing gets posted on the Marketplace without MS's approval. If MS is "thinking" about their customers, don't you think they would have said, "Hold on! This is way too expensive!" when they saw the exhorbitant pricing.
The Vagina Clown comment by Wombat had me laughing hard!
Keep up the good work, guys!

Nice to hear a little debate on which is the best video game podcast. I do about 7 hours of walking a week (to and from my lectures) and so they have been a great way to make the journeys quicker.
Here's my little run down on what's out there. Note that I don't really listen to any game or system specific casts as they are invariably a bit limited in their range of topics.
CAGcast is my number one, and as you're all here I'll assume you know why. It's nice to hear what you guys make about trends in the industry, Wombat particularly provides good commentary on the PR/Marketing aspects we are exposed to. Like 'Hired.Geek' said, once you find someone who's like minded, its easy to listen to their opinions.
Retronauts is indeed an excellent podcast, those guys are some serious nerds, which I appreciate. I'm really looking forward to a promised, forthcoming Diablo episode, though I must say I have enjoyed the general episodes more than the title specific ones (Marathon, Pokemon etc.)
GameScoop and the Hotspot (IGN and Game Spot respectively) are both news type 'casts and so if you really want to just hear new/forth coming games with a little humerous commentary that's probably more your cup of tea.
1up Yours and EGM Live* (both the 1up network) are similar to the above two, but they tend to also have guests on the show. The episodes with Denis Dyack and Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein stick in my mind as being particularly enlightening.
If you really want to hear lots of interviews with industry folk, The Major Nelson 'Blogcast' is the place to go. Its a good, if some what dry, show that is often informative even though it may not be all that entertaining. That said, the Major's oh-so subtle digs at Sony and Nintendo are always amusing.
If your main focus is PC gaming, there's GFW radio (the 1up network) and the PC Gamer Magazine podcast. Both deal with news and new releases and they try their best to stick to the PC platform, though often fall in to discussing consoles as well.
Evil Avatar radio is somewhat unique in that it is broadcast live on local radio as well as recorded for the net. As such they have live callers with questions, comments and the like. It is not the best cast however, sometimes feeling a little light on content and relying somewhat too much on their callers.
The Joystiq Podcast is only 5 episodes old and as of yet hasn't done that great a job of appearing on a weekly basis. Perfectly fine show, with news and comments and a good stream of guests including the very fabulous mr. Cheapy D.
Podtoid is the Wild card of the bunch without doubt. The earlier shows were frustrating but hilarious, with a clear lack of depth in the casters knowledge. But they have a good old time making the shows and Summa and Aaron's arguments are great. The middle few episodes suffered from sound quality issues, which they seem to be attempting to remedy.
If you are a big WoW player then there's all the WoW Radio podasts as well as Legendary Thread and The Instance. There's also lots of Nintendo/XBox/Playstation only podcasts and presumably an official Bungie/Halo podcast led by Luke Smith is on its way.
As far as video podcasts go there's IGN weekly, The 1up show, the Bonus Round (Game Trailers), Epileptic gaming etc. The best of which is probably the 1up shows, though Bonus Round is pretty good also. If you want a laugh, check out Coin-op Tv, particularly the episode with D-toid's Summa.

Vugarity aside... the cagcast is what is it. I like listen to Cheapy and Wombat but I have train my ears to filter some of the cursing and stuff out.
Cheapy... simple rules to lose weight.
Drink at least 8 Glasses of water a day.
Cut out the sugar. (drinks, candy, etc...)
Stop snacking. Eat a proper meal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
Eat until you are satified not until you are full.
Cook with good oils. Olive oil (extra virgin), Grape seed oil (flavor less... not easy to burn)
Istead of getting whole milk, get 2% taste the same but less fat
Have at least 2 fruit and a salad daily (stay away from creamy dressing)
Rice unfortuately (along with other starches) is best suited for people who are extremely active. It gets a bad wrap.
Dried fruits (blueberries, cranberries, etc.) are good snacks.
Veggie Booty (http://www.taquitos.net/snacks.php?snack_code=584), lightly salted popcorn, ...good snackage
Walk whenever you can.

CAGcast #73 - ** out of ****
A truly half-ass episode, but thankfully no interview this week.
I loved the interviews. I actually gave me something to use to impress other people about... considering I actually knew something.
I haven't listened to this cast yet, but ill be hitting it while doing my homework.

"Hey raring, jag har en ? dollspenis!"
"Hey babe, I have a not a proper word dollpenis!"
I remember that scen: "- Hey, babe, I've got a 12-inch penis."
In Swedish: "- Hey raring, jag har en tolvtums penis"
Trying on his best Swedish accent.

I'm glad there was no interview this week.
I've got to say the "developer" you mentioned gave nothing but whining about game development. I know the PS3 and 360 need higher amounts of ram because of HD, but the Wii doesn't have HD and doesn't need that much ram. I don't think we heard people complaining about the Ram of consoles during the last generation of gaming.
The episode was a drop-off from previous weeks, but still enjoyable after a hard day.

Hey cheapy, While I rather not get into a huge long discussion, the "Developer" who was "authoritative" on the Wii? Not so much. Pretty much wrong on all of his points. Apparently, according to him, no games were made before pcs with 512megs of ram. We just had a generation with 3 machines, all of which had less ram than Wii.
Other than that, good show as always.
edit: And while we're at it? Wii and ds supply issues are completely misunderstood. Nintendo has shipped and sold more Wii and Ds than just about anything else. They are shipping like crazy, and selling out. It's not as if they're shipping low qtys. They are setting records with shipments, it's just that they sell out.

This episode seemed more like two guys just talking rather than two people bringing up good points and telling fun tales that happened to them. Not sure why though

I'm sorry, didn't mean to get Expectations and contentment mixed up. I knew the PS3 on-line was going to suck at the beginning as well. :)
Great show guys.
Wii Development:
Who asked for dumbed down 360 and PS3 ports anyway? The Wii needs wii-centric development teams plain and simple. The Wii needs original games. If RE4 can come out on the Gamecube some good looking games can come out on the Wii.

Currently listening to this week's CAGcast but thought I would touch on this real quick:
You should be able to play 5 players in Battle Lode Runner by using 4 Wiimotes/Classics, and a GC/Wavebird controller. I'm pretty sure that worked for Bomberman '93, another 5 player TG-16 game.

Not sure if Wombat's innapropriate joke has been guessed yet. So here it is:

And for the record, I'm extremely offended.

What I respect about this podcast as compared to the Clowncast is that you two actually contribute to the issues at hand. Major Nelson packs together seven interviews that frequent the topics of supporting Guitar Hero 2, exclaiming how Boom Boom Rocket is incredible, and how he likes to decide which of his twelve phones he will use each day.
Wombat - I am pretty sure Luke from 1Up will be running the Bungie podcast or somehting like that. The only way they could gage his talent and passion for their position was to listen to the podcast. If you support "Your new favorite game" (Super Paper Mario) You could be in charge of Super Duper Paper Mario. It will incorporate 4D as well as just D...interested?
CheapyD - You should probably be happy with the gameplay of Guitar Hero 5 when it comes out in 2009 because apparently they think that 10 is not a great enough measure of their success. I felt the same way you did when you bought Shivering Isles. I did not want to spend thirty dollars on this by any means but in the end I felt compelled. Next time put thirty dollars on top of your television and never touch it again, this might help the process.

I enjoy the Cagcast, listen to it every week. But I have to agree with lspear a bit in that you guys just don't talk about games enough. You never hear about niche titles, and forget about Japanese RPGs. I don't think I've ever heard you really discuss one of those. This is especially the case with Wombat. While I like his insight into certain aspects of the industry, and enjoy a lot of the points he brings up, it just seems like he doesn't really play games anymore. At least not enough to be the host of a gaming podcast.
I understand you don't like certain genres, but the show just feels like half a show without it, and just a poor effort. For example, I was actually looking forward to the new Generation of Chaos on the PSP. While I wouldn't expect you to go into a deep discussion about it, it's nice to at least hear that you're up on your gaming knowledge and can give some info about it. I hate sports games, but I can still talk about games like Madden a little.
Just thought I'd give my two cents.

I understand some peoples arguments about how the cagcast doesn't have enough info and insight on actual GAMES but I don't think we should expect this from the cagcast. This podcast is more vague about specific topics than other podcasts that are designed to talk about current events in the world of gaming. The cagcast is more about 2 guys just shooting the breeze and talking about stuff in their lives and the topics about gaming that INTEREST them. Sometimes other podcasts are "forced" to discuss games and news that they could care less about. On the cagcast it seems like CheapyD and Wombat just want to talk about...... what they want to talk about. I listen to other podcasts for all my other gaming news and reviews (IGN, 1UP, PC Gamer, ect.) and I listen to the cagcast for some mostly humorous opinions with the occasional insider scoop or informative interview.
I would like to hear more about games from CheapyD and Wombat but I have come to realize that this podcast isn't really the place for that kind of talk. Now I just listen for fun, to hear what hilarious, inappropriate jokes will spew from either CheapyD or Wombat's mouth. If you only listen to the cagcast for gaming news and reviews then I think you are doing yourself a dis-service. Broaden your horizons.

I don't know about the Joystiq podcast first-hand (or is it first-ear?), but I can say that the CHUD.com podcast is (was? Do they still do one?) similarly horrible while I think they're easily the best 'movie geek' site out there...at least the one with the best writing. I can't remember whether it was in an interview or actually part of a book, but Stephen King himself once said that great writers and storytellers are often very disappointing and verbally clumsy 'personalities'. Conversely, I don't know if I'd want to read a Cheapy or Wombat blogsite everyday.
Speaking of Cheapy...I'm a little confused here. You conceptually defended the COG tag video guide pricing ($6.25 for all 30 tags) last night on Kotaku, and yet you think the Shivering Isles expansion, clocking the average gamer at 20-30 hours, as I understand it, at $30 is essentially a ripoff. Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't reconcile those two statements. I think since the "Horse Armor" fiasco, Bethesda has been as close to 'fair pricing' with DLC on XBL as anyone. Were BradyGuides or whoever to price all sections of a video strategy guide proportional to the COG tag location videos, you'd probably be looking at a $50+ strategy guide, easy.

The least Wombat could do is rent games and talk about them. To hear him constantly whine about VC prices is just a little bit old. Maybe the CAGcast is struggling because of the time of year -- not many big releases... plus the state of the console race is quite clear, so what's to talk about?
#1 The 360 is the best system by far, however Microsoft and other companies are ridiculous with their DL content prices. Microsoft is also making a mistake introducing the Elite (what a ripoff), a console that's not much different at all. The Elite should include Wi-Fi, the cooler chips, and a quiter drive at the very least. Instead of keeping a steady course, MS is starting to make careless, Sega-like mistakes.
#2 The PS3 is a $600 paperweight, an overpriced, worthless system that offers the same games with less content than the Xbox 360, a poor online service, and Blu Ray discs that will never reach the mainstream. No consumer will pay $30 for a movie when many households don't have an HDTV, don't know how to use one, and regular-priced DVDs can be had for $5.
#3 The Wii will be the highest selling system, but the one that nobody plays. Nintendo is notorious for making systems that sell, but have few games worth playing. That's fine with me, because I use the Wii for other things -- reliving the past with the Virtual Console, an occassional game of Wii Sports, and having some fun with the Wii browser, Everybody Votes, and the News Channel.

Overpriced paperweight that offers all the same games as the 360? Ohh really? I think this list of 25+ exclusive games that come out within the next year prove you wrong on that one. And don't give me that "No games right now" crap, because anyone who REALLY expects a system to have numerous games within the first 5-6 months is being unrealistic. So even though if you get free on-line, hd-dvd, and wireless free with the ps3 that would cost you 700$ it's over priced? Hmmm... And Blu-ray will never hit the main-stream, how do you know that? can you predict the future? DVD's had just as bad as sales as DVD's did now and look at them. And when a piece of equipment has the newest technology in it, of course it's going to be expensive. I don't remember early adopters of HDTV's complaining about the price..... If you want to say the PS3 has little games, that's fine, but calling it a worthless paperweight is just ridiculous and I have read more on these forums of people trading in their Wii's for PS3's than the other way around.
Anyways, Wombat, this was one of the funniest podcasts ever and you have been on a roll lately with your jokes. Keep it up.

You know, I think the PS3 will find its equilibrium soon enough, but when you start listing every game ever announced* (including Sudoku!) and insinuating that they're all coming sooner than later, it really comes across as desperate and weak. That's a page right out of a Nintendo fuckwad's playbook, that is.
When you take time to dig up a Wheel of Fortune link, though, there's probably no discourse to be had. Sigh.
*--And it's really weaksauce when one puts in the whole "working title" or "Capcom Luxury Cruise Survival Horror MMOFPS" entries in there. Those are games that may not happen, may be years away, or may--hark!!--end up as multiconsole efforts. Now that's not just a fanboy ploy, it's an EBGamestop.com 'scam preorders' move.

I like these type of podcasts.
Two people talking about games that they want to talk about and talking about their lives once in a while, instead of just doing the news rundown and reading the emails fast so they can go eat a sandwich afterwords.
its refreshing to hear something laid back and funny and rude without being the status quo. RoboCop references, Meatspins, talks with the parents once in a while and things of this nature is what makes the show cool.
It what keeps me coming back each week...
plus it's the vulgarity!

great podcast once again. but once again, i disagree with Wombat about Major Nelson. if you listened to Major Nelson's podcasts, he openly praised the Wii and its games and has also criticized about microtransactions that were considered unfair by consumers who commented in his sites.
while Major Nelson will never openly slam MS (since he's employed by them), he'll try to be fair about what is going right or wrong with MS and their decisions about Live and its Marketplace content.

As far as the Wii getting undeserved praise for the price, I think to a point that is true. I feel a hell of a lot better having bought a Wii for $250 and not having many games compared to how I would have felt had I bought a PS3.
Being cheaper somehow does make something "better" or at least makes us more tolerable to problems that come with that object. We see this with games all the time. $20 for Cooking Mama for the DS was a good buy, $50 for the Wii version is not. I can put up with the issues that Cooking Mama has on the DS because I only dropped two Hamiltons on it.
In that same vein, a system that is very expensive, like the PS3, is going to get blasted more often for its problems than the Wii, simply because you expect more from a system that is $350 more.
The Wii will definitely not be my only "next-gen" system, but I will wait until the 360 gets a nice big price drop and I can pick up a ton of the games on the cheap.

Wow its weird to see the CAG hate this week, that's pretty atypical. I do NOT go into the CAGcast every week with the expectation of hearing reviews of all the latest games and gadgets. I DO go in looking forward to hearing their (often humorous) commentary about the latest news from the video game industry. There is no other video game podcast out there like it.
I really enjoyed that email you received this week from the 'anonymous developer'. It makes me wonder if 3rd party developers now see this generation of consoles as a fractured market. In the past, the 2 or 3 main competitors were all usually similar in graphical capability. But now, direct ports to the Wii of PS3/360 games sounds difficult, if not impossible in many cases.
With the explosion of growth the video game market has experienced over the past few years, it makes me believe that supporting a fractured market may be feasible. But... due to ballooning development costs of games for the 360/PS3, ports are now more financially necessary than ever. Will a system that is not port-friendly be viable long-term? The flip side is that the Wii is not nearly as expensive to develop games for, opening the door to smaller development studios and for the top studios to take on less financially risky projects.

As much as I hate to rain on the parade of another great CAGCast, Wombat 's humorous but tragically unprofessional attitude towards Major Nelson went a lttle too far this week and I'm surprised no one has called him out on it.
Referring to him as the Ronald McDonald of gaming was one thing, calling him a Vagina Clown is simply grammer-school name calling and repeating it throughout the show was like hearing the latest political mud slinging campaign.
I am a regular fan of your show and I don't necessarily disagree with your points Wombat and kudos to making bold claims but I just thought you were just pushing the envelope for the sake of a quick laugh and can you please do some research before going on the offensive and at least learned his job beforehand?

This show was wonderful. I really enjoy listening to your discussions about the games you have recently played. It is refreshing to hear gaming celebrities/personalities such as yourselves talk about playing games that are more than a week old. Other gaming outlets only discuss games that are either brand new or soon to be released. Although I enjoy hearing about the next best thing (after all, it is their job), their discussions often leave me dissatisfied with my current collection. Hearing Cheapy and Wombat still express their love for Oblivion, Guitar Hero, and even the JLA heroes game (despite that game being terrible) makes me excited about playing the games I do own rather than anticipating new releases. Thank you, and now I'm off to secure more nerd points in Call of Duty 2 and Oblivion!

I have not listen to Evil Avatar, GameScoop, and Hotspot so I am going to check them out.
A new Podcast I stumbled upon just recently is Game Theory. The are only two or three episodes in but show allot of promise.
That EGM with Denis Dyack was probably one of the best shows on the net I have ever heard. It was so cool to hear someone who has poured their heart and soul into a project just rip into some of these "Game Journalists". Although with 1UP and EGM I wish they would produce two versions, one the raw show as is, and the other with all the naughty four letter words beeped out.

I think you are missing the developers point. It is not hard to program for the Wii, what is hard is to try to create a game that looks even remotely good on the Wii when the same game look incredible on the PS3 or 360. To create a simple cartoon game like Mario or something is not that hard. It is when the PR and Marketing people expect a game to look and play like the same game on the PS3 and 360.
Chrisgrant
I am sorry if the comment stings a little bit. Like I said in my comment your family of video game blogs is probably one of the best on the web. But I guess I do not find the way that you and Ludwig present the information as something that does not appeal to me. And maybe it is because your blogs are really good that I just expected more. I have heard you on other PodCasts and I was very impressed, I really like the interview with GamerTag Radio where talked about how PR agencies try to make journalists feel special by inviting them to private parties to see games and make them feel special to get better reviews. And how you warned all PodCasters and Bloggers to always have their Bullsh#$t detectors on. That was an increible interview, so I know you have it in you.

I listened to your filthy podcast yesterday and only one thing is still on my mind: Wombat's vagina monologue.
You see, I like vagina. Vagina is one of my all time favorite things in this world. They're not all pretty, trim, or pleasant, but I hold in high regard every vagina I've ever come into contact with or sought out in various forms of media. Because of this I have to express my deep, penetrating displeasure with equating Major Nelson with a vagina. Clown-like or not, it's an insult to all vaginas, everywhere.

The PS3 is a worthless system. I don't know how else to say it. Sure, it will have exclusive games, but nothing to make me want one. Metal Gear hasn't been good since the first one on PSOne. No one cares about Tekken anymore. And yes, Blu ray will never be a mainstream success because #1 the masses aren't knowledgable about HDTV's or hi definition dvds. Plus, the prices of the movies are too high. I *own* the hd dvd player for the 360, and to tell you the truth, upscaled dvds look almost as good. I think most people would rather buy a regular dvd for $5.50 then pay $34.99 for an hd dvd/blu ray disc.
I love Sony fanboys. Cheapy and Wombat, at times, have the balls to tell it like it is, that the PS3 is worthless, but I'd bet they get the same kind of emails/repsonses as I got by my post. To keep everyone happy, they lay off their true feelings. I'd like to see them come straight out and tell it like it is.

How have either of you NOT played a Pokemon game!? I mean to own a Nintendo handheld without a Pokemon title. You guys should try them :)
Anyways, BIG shoutout to ALL of the breeders of the pokemon topic in the ds/gba subforum.
Please acknowledge the following users for their hours of hard work they put into breeding and getting event pokemon to aid the collections of fellow CAG's! Its amazing how fellow pokemon players can help each other for 110 pages and counting.

I would have to disagree with you on one fact. That more people are trading their Nintendo Wii for a Sony PS3. I have read and seen ads on CraigsList and on here the other way where people will trade their PS3 for a Wii. Honestly I play my PS3 allot more then I play my Wii, I play my 360 allot more then I play the PS3. Unforunately the Wii much like its forfathers suffers from the fact that Nintendo is the only company that makes good games for it, and everyone else just ports over games that look worse the same game on the last gen console versions. Now there are a couple of titles that come out from companies other then Nintendo but these are Nintendo DS ports that are now much cheaper then the comprable Wii titles.
I would agree with you that I unless you press pause the High Def disks really do not look all that better then the upscaled DVDs. Now if I had a 1080p television I would feel more comfortable saying that. But with my 720p television I do not see allot of difference from DVDs. One last note to that comment I feel I have to say is that does vary a little bit from movie to movie. Some HD-DVD and Blu-Ray disks look some what better then others. And I think that download services like Amazon, and XBox LIVE are showing that people will be thrilled to go digital download for movies they rent. NextFlix has rumblings coming out that they may offer a digital download service also. So I really do not see one format wining over another format.

In reply to Cheapy's comment about people playing Pokemon, I grew up with it and continue to play it. It is an attractive series because of its easy RPG elements and large ammounts of replayability and content. That's why it had so many pre-orders and so many sold. I myself picked up a copy just to see what new content they added.

I have not heard this weeks 1UP, because a smaller complaint of mine is that they are so frakin long! I think the last one was one hour forty four minutes. Really any where from forty minutes to an hour is long enough for a podcast.

BTW great CAGcast, this one actually seemed short (despite being nearly 2 hours) because it wasn't just a rundown of the latest rumblings in the game world.
I prefer to hear what you guys are playing/thinking about rather than what everyone else is telling you to focus on. Keep up the good work lads.

Awesome episode yet again, guys. I was on vacation, so I'm a bit late, but I'd just like to say one thing- I also have the DS Stulus Pen Attachment, straight from Play Asia. It used to be my stylus of choice until I got the new Pokemon one last Sunday 8-)

another great show guys. For reading my comment last week I gave the CAG cast a DIGG . Its time for wombat to open up his favorite bookmark and go for a meat spin. btw I love the long shows, the cag cast is like jello. there is always room for more.
This question should be for the CAG bag but since I'm on my motorola Q I can only do so much. cheapy , since you live in future-land, what are the cellphones like and which do you use ? I hear they make one now with waggle.

I agree with you Cheapy, it'd be nice if they just kept the dubbing to whatever language it was originally. Especially in games where it makes sense that they would be speaking a different language, at the very least have an option to set it to either language if disk space allows it.
I think the main reason why game companies feel like they have to have it in English is because a lot of people don't like to read while playing games, or even watching movies (Wombat's wife is one of them.) I never really understood that, even in English games I tend to turn the subtitles on.
...........................
And thanks to whoever suggested the meatspin idea. As of right now Wombat will have to endure 47 spins of meat, hilarity will inevitably ensue thereafter.

Cheapy, if you want to cut 15 or so pounds, the easiest way is to cut back on sugary drinks. If you drink those, just replace a good chunk of them with water. That was the first big thing I did when I started losing weight and that alone cut 10 or 15 pounds off in about 1 1/2 months. Also, if you want to lose more in the long run, the easiest way to stick to it is to just do little things at a time, and stick to those. It's MUCH easier to stick with something when you cut it out little by little instead of trying to cut out everything at once.
I just wish I had something else to comment on about this week's show. Uhh, great show as always!

I'll go ahead and back up Abalistar's comments. I quit drinking "regular" soda and switched to diet and lost nearly 20 pounds.

You know what? I listened to the latest podcast again and I have to be honest and say I was too hard on the episode. Earlier in the week I was distracted, but after relaxing some, watching the nba playoffs, playing some games and getting laid, I listened to the episode again and it was actually pretty well done. I have some issues with the show, but I'm looking forward to another summer of biking with my ipod, listening to the show. I apologize, Mr. Wombat, but buy or rent some fucking games to talk about. And stop trading in games to Gamestop. Collect and cherish them for all-time.

Long live the Wombat!
The whole "Vagina Clown" bit is hilarious! I still chuckle when I think about the whole "Vaj" Nelson theory: Ronald McDonald indeed.
Keep up the great work on the CAGcast. Every week it's enjoyable. I put other podcasts on hold until I can finish the latest CAGcast and will sync up my iPod earlier than normal just to keep up with you guys.

There seriously is nothing wrong with people who are older playing Pokemon. Regardless at what it is marketed at it's still an RPG. Although I find Diamond to be just an updated version of Pokemon Blue . It is quite predictable if you finished the very first 2. But I will finish it regardless. BTW I believe you guys have beaten Major Nelson's podcast now as he is at 768 and u guys are at 784. You think the Vagina clow comment has knocked him off? I find his podcasts boring most of the time I Am so happy they are only half the time now.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - crap
Final Fantasy XIII - final fantasy is crap
Final Fantasy XIII versus - never heard of it
Ninja Gaiden Sigma - i own both versions for the Xbox
Tekken 6 - crap
Time Crisis 4 - who cares
5th Phantom Saga - never heard of it
6GUN II - what's this?
Old West Game by Rockstar - who cares
Keep it up.
I'd like to see them come straight out and tell it like it is.[/quote]
Ummm.. most Blu-ray movies are 20$, 30$ brand new. And the general consumer does not know about HDTV's now, but those aren't the ones who have video games systems anyways usually, and Soon HDTV's will be a lot cheaper so they could hit the mass market. Really, nobody knows and While Blu-ray may never replace DVD's it could still have a substantial market with all those that do own HDTV's. And yes, there are quality problems right now with some blu-ray movies, however most of the newer ones have rectified that problem.
"The game's critical praise was matched with commercial success. As of March 2007, Tekken 5 has sold around 4.3 million copies (note that the game was first released in February 2005)." Ohh really? No one cares about Tekken anymore? I think you should tell that to all the people in America and Japan who love it, and all those people posting claiming that it will be going to the 360. And just because YOU don't like Metal Gear Solid, that clearly means that it's not a good game and that no one will like it, even though MGS 3 got an average score of 93% according to gamerankings. So clearly, just because you do not like the games, that is justification to call a system with many past AAA sellers coming exclusively to the system, developers who have created AAA sellers creating exclusive content, and the ability to fold@home a Useless paperweight....
And it's hard for CheapyD to call the PS3 worthless when he enjoys Railfan so much.
