"PLAYSTATION Eye enabled PS3 game THE EYE OF JUDGMENT has been dated "Fall" for Japan and apparently the rest of the world. (http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/ps3-hd-eye-toy-card-game-dated-255419.php) Nothing more exact than that at the moment. The card-based game was demoed at last year's E3 and takes advantage of Sony's new HD "Eye Toy," dubbed the PLAYSTATION Eye. The camera has a frame rate of 120 fps and allows for low light operation, and there are four mics that include background audio suppression, making clear audio chat possible with the need of a headset. Actually curious to see how this game does."
Interview with Eyetoy developer. (http://www.developmag.com/news/26776/Zoe-Mode-Eyes-up-PS3-potential)
"The developer of Sony's EyeCreate software says the PS3 can now capitalise on YouTube's ubiquity.
Earlier today Sony announced its new EyeToy camera, called simply Eye, with improved resolution and audio functions. EyeCreate is a video editing software that comes free with the camera and is developed by Brighton-based Zoe Mode, owned by Kuju.
The software lets users save and edit photos, video and audio clips to the PlayStation 3 HD.
Also: "It plugs into a YouTube-esque back end and will include a number of upload and community features as well," studio head Ed Daly explained to Develop.
In Sony's so-called Game 3.0 era, the software seems to be a perfect fit for PS3, added Daly: "There's a whole raft of functionality we can give players with this software when it comes to user-generated content. You can use the camera and microphone to make home movies, or even make stop motion films.""

Well with that you'll be able to edit your photos and upload them into games like Little Big Planet so use in the levels you created for example.
Also the video portion, I can see the "youtube like section" of the Home Theater being where people share their videos there too.
As for face mapping, that is possible.
I remember a somewhat old news cast video (never found out if it was real or not) where a guy was moving his head around in front of the camera. As he moved different "paint" was appearing on his face on the TV and seemed to translate very easily. I hope to see more things like that along with the face mapping.

This looks cool, I just hope they find a way to integrate the camera into the games better. EyeToy play was alright and my son still has fun with it, and the XBox cam is a waste of space at this point. It's nice to see that there is a bit of innovation with "Eye of Judgement", but give me something like the '06 E3 demo where the guy was able to manipulate the virtual bathtub using the camera and a standard drinking glass.

Cheap? Hmmm, the camera looks like its going to be expensive, especially if the resolution is in HD plus the added microphone. My guess is $100 (I am hoping for less though).

Eye of Judgement may end up being little more than a cool tech demo, but it's certainly one of the coolest we've seen in a while. Ever since the first showing I thought it looked neat, and it makes me think there might be a lot of uses for such technology if the right developers got behind it.

Friend sent me this:
What up guys,
Wanted to give you a guys a sneak pick of the Latest Game form JapanSTUDIO and Sony Computer Science Laboratory.
I am one of 5 lucky GAP members who got to work the Booth of Sony Playstation in Wizard World Philadelphia.
The Eye of Judgment is a unique combination of strategy card game and battle, played out with real cards and the use of the next-gen EyeToy camera for the PS3. This Ground Breaking Game presents a new style of gameplay where the player. Through use of a 3' x 3' board and trading cards -- each encrypted with "cybercode" -- players conquer the field by selecting a card and placing the "cybercode" in front of the EyeToy camera for their respective character to come to life and battle. Each character has various skillsets, which will determine the outcome of the battle. Players take turns to place cards as they jostle for control of the board; the winner is the first player to capture five of the nine squares. The Eye of Judgment presents the player with more than 30 cards, as well as unique online and offline game play.
My first impression about the game is just out of this world, and when i think of the possibilties of marketing options for this kind of game play my brains goes into reset mode...jejeje.... (imagine Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon and all other deck games out there). Great new and ground breaking improvements by Sony like always "gaming advancements and improvements on game play on the console wars don't move forward until Sony does it".
Thank you Sony for giving hope on my future nights and weekends playing all of your consoles!
We where ready to rock out the day when out of nowhere staff from Marketing Werks (this are the big kahunas who are in charge of the booth and our Fates during the show....jejeje)pull out the setup for the game. at the beginning all of us from the GAP thought that it would be just another PS3 station but boy where we wrong!, they where actually setting up the game we helped the setup and where ready to jingle in no time. They gave us the console the game the 2 set of decks and thats it we didn't get any manuals or anything we thought it would ruin the experience with no instructions which made it even cooler to learn. without help at all of us and the other fans that where attending wizard world that came by the booth where able to get past the learning curve in about an 1 Hour each gave an option of answer to each questions we got as we played along.
The cards are very hard to understand at the beginning but after each turn we could understand what each attribute meant, you get Certain amount of MANA point for each turn and each card or spell that you set on the board cost MANA point.
there are also support cards that help you by giving you boosts or by doing a status effect to your opponent.
i am so excited i got so much to say, i have exclusive video and pics of the games and the cards that i will post tomorrow Sunday.
Lastly i want thank the GAP for this awesome opportunity i am experiencing and all i can add is that The GAP rules!!!
Keep a look out for the previews in this thread!

Press release about Eye of Judgement
THE EYE OF JUDGMENT: a Revolution in Gaming
o High-tech meets traditional: a new concept in gaming and a new use of PLAYSTATIONŽ3
o Fantasy trading cards come to life in 3D with the PLAYSTATIONŽEye camera
o A battle of wits and magic: use tactics, skill and luck to defeat your foe
Sony Computer Entertainment announced today the Autumn release of THE EYE OF JUDGMENT™ — developed exclusively for PLAYSTATIONŽ3 (PS3™) in collaboration with trading cards expert and market leader Hasbro. THE EYE OF JUDGMENT is a new concept of interactive entertainment that combines Hasbro trading cards expertise, a strategic board game format, the immense power of PS3 and the groundbreaking technology of Sony Computer Entertainment’s next-generation PLAYSTATIONŽEye camera. Magical, visually stunning, conceptually unique, easy to play and seriously enjoyable, THE EYE OF JUDGMENT will appeal to gamers of all ages and abilities and is set to become a PS3 must-have.
How does it work? First, set up the next-generation PLAYSTATION Eye USB camera in its special stand arched over the play mat – a grid of nine fields - on your tabletop; then draw five cards from the 30-card deck. The aim of the game is to control five fields on the mat – a simple concept; but this is where the magic starts. Your opponent places a game card down on a field on the mat. On the screen, vibrations and energy waves begin to emanate from the card; before your eyes, the game creature emerges from the flat surface in incredible 3D detail.
It’s your turn. You look through your hand for a creature or spell card with the right attributes to defeat that of your opponent’s. If you select a creature card – say, a dragon – and place it down on an adjacent square, facing your opponent’s creature. On the screen, your dragon emerges in 3D, wings beating, and launches a jet of scorching flame at your opponent’s creature. Battle has commenced. Take turns to place and activate cards on the fields: each card summons a different creature or spell, with an amazing variety of attack and defence characteristics. Choose from creatures including Flame Magus and Bioliths. Many have special abilities that you must consider. Choose from spells that heal, burn, teleport and more. Your task is to conquer the board by deploying your cards more skilfully than your opponent does, and making the right decisions – sometime sacrificing a creature for strategic gain…
THE EYE OF JUDGMENT is made possible by the card-reading abilities of the next-generation PLAYSTATIONŽEye camera and PS3. Each card features a unique code which the camera reads, allowing PS3 to create High Definition animated characters and meld them seamlessly into the on-screen camera view of the tabletop. It’s a revolutionary application of the latest technology to a much-loved card gaming format that will captivate players of all ages.
- Three ways to play: play on your own against PS3, against an opponent in two-player mode or against an opponent online.
- THE EYE OF JUDGMENT is developed in collaboration with Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast subsidiary: producer of MAGIC: THE GATHERING, the world’s premier trading card game.
- THE EYE OF JUDGMENT comes with a starter pack of 30 character and spell cards, plus 4 function cards. A total of more than 100 cards will be available at launch, which can be purchased separately in stores, with a variety of themed decks available from major retail chains across Europe. Trade, swap and build your card deck for the ultimate battle.
Key Features:
• A revolutionary new way to use PS3: a much-loved traditional gaming format given new life in 3D by the next-generation computer entertainment system
• Showcases the power of the next-generation camera: this is the first example of the possibilities of camera gaming on PS3
• See your creatures come to life in High Definition 3D
• Chose from over 100 different cards to do battle with – from creatures to spells – and play with your cards even when you’re away from your PS3
• Suitable for one or two players
• Collaborating with trading cards experts Hasbro
• A range of data expansion discs and card decks planned for release, continually refreshing and changing gameplay strategies
A unique blend of magic and technology, THE EYE OF JUDGMENT is a revolutionary application of the technological power of PS3 and the next-generation camera. This Autumn, the power will be in your hands.

been meaning to ask....how the hell does the camera know which cards you're laying down :)
Vanigan
06-30-2007, 05:56 AM
There's something like a barcode on each card, but larger and probably made up of blocks instead of bars. It's likely you have to hold up the card straight on to the camera first, then the camera reads the card. Then, as you tilt and move the card around the system keeps track of the card's perspective distortion using the barcode as a reference.
It's not too difficult and the tech for this has been out for quite some time. There was a museum exibit that had the same thing with "VR" goggles. People would walk around with the goggles on looking at these books. The books only had a rectangular code box on the pages that let the computer know what to display.

Yeh, if you check the link I posted a few posts back it has a bunch of close ups of teh cards and the "ruins"/"barcode" that the game/camera uses.
Anyway, word is October 25th is when the game'll come out in Japan. Not sure about other regions yet.

Hmm... I suspect that there's no barcode, er not in the way we're used to though. I think the symbols inside the black bars are just for show, the camera is likely looking at the overall size, shape, and how those black bars are broken up to determine what card it is, then it checks this against a list of cards in the game data instead of actually reading info from the card.
Despite it being a CCG, I'm actually very interested in this, and I'm not sure why. I wasn't interested at all until I saw it in action and for some reason it just works.

I plan to play with my wife and daughter at home and figured I would need more decks to start... Building a deck drives me crazy so I got 1 of each to se what I like.

I'm also interested in this game and fairly new to the collectible trading card genre, so I appreciate any insights into my questions:
1) Can I only play by myself with the initial 30 cards in the starter deck (packed with the game & eyecam bundle)? Would I need to buy another themed starter deck to play co-op mode with my cousin?
2) Is it my understanding that all the starter decks packed with the game and all the individual themed starter decks ($15 each) are identical, respectively? So, that means only the $4 booster packs will be randomized with 8 cards, right?
3) Does anyone know the ratio of common & uncommon cards provided in the decks or booster packs? The press release only stated that there will be just 1 rare or ultra-rare per booster pak, so are the rest just duplicates that can be found in the starter decks? On that note, there will be 110 cards upon launch....is there any mention of how they have been divided (rarity & function-wise)?
Just wanted a heads up before I commit to the pre-orders on Amazon. Thx.

For those interested, found the answers to my questions on the interweb.
1) Can I only play by myself with the initial 30 cards in the starter deck (packed with the game & eyecam bundle)? Would I need to buy another themed starter deck to play co-op mode with my cousin? In order to play a full, complete game you will need to start with a 30-card deck per player. This is definitely true for online VS. However, there is an easier "Rock Paper Scissor" Mode, but I'm not sure what the requirements or rules are...
2) Is it my understanding that all the starter decks packed with the game and all the individual themed starter decks ($15 each) are identical, respectively? So, that means only the $4 booster packs will be randomized with 8 cards, right?
YES, all the starter decks & themed decks will have identical selections of cards. Only the individual booster packs will have 8 random cards with 1 of them guaranteed to be ranked RARE or ULTRA-RARE.
Still unknown
Here's some other detailed info I found out:
- The 1st set launched with the game release (110 cards) is coined "The Biolith Rebellion". The 2nd set will be released in Feb.2008, and a 3rd set expansion is scheduled for July 2008. Each new set will contain at least 100 new card types and will introduce more powerful creatures and spells to keep the game "fresh". My pocket book is hurting from the news already.
- There is a deck limitation imposed. In general, you can only have a limit of 3 of the same cards in your hand. Some unique cards might be more stingy.

So do you think it would be wise to buy the starter decks or just buy a ton of booster packs?
The 5 starter decks + 4 boosters = 90
or 22 booster packs = 88

you could just build the starters if you get enough boosters. Does this game have any generic cards that you will need multiples of? (ie land)
That would be the only benefit of getting the starters imo.
Looking into a box of boosters to split between myself and a friend.

36 booster packs in a box.
There will probably be a complete card list out within a few days, I assume at least.
MY comic shop claims that the pre-orders for this one are very low, and that his distributor may not even carry it. thats just what one comic shop owner says.

Didi the Enlightened
Costs: 3 Mana Pts. to Summon / 2 Mana Pts. to Attack
Stats: 4 Hit Points, 2 Attack Points Damage; Quickness
Didi attacks the same target twice. The target's counter attack occurs after the second attack. Didi adds +1 to his attack if the enemy is on a fire field. While Didi is on the board, no fire field can be fieldquaked or exchanged.

Rarity is color coded >> Black = common, White = uncommon, Silver = rare, and Gold = ultra-rare
Each booster pack will contain 5 common cards, 2 uncommon cards, and 1 rare or ultra-rare card.

That is one ugly card.
But have you considered that its on-screen representation might kick-ass? I mean, the whole concept of EOJ stress way beyond how the artwork of a card will look or just a laundry list of high stats/description bonuses. The art can look like crap, but if its game counterpart resembles the final "Knights of the Round" summon attack from FFVII (I think it was from that PS1 game), then I'm gonna waste lots of $$$ on booster packs just to score it. I hope most rare and ultra-rare cards receive extra attention from the game designers & programmers due to their scarcity.
Just discovered the existence of "phantom cards" in the booster packs, too. These are supposedly special ultra-rare cards with no artwork or stats; however, its true power will only be revealed in the game once it is summoned under the PS Eye. Speculations abound on whether these cards represent unique uber-powerful creatures or the ability to draw a number of random spells/creatures for the player's benefit. I bet the "Rubber Ducky" card from last year's E3 Sony stage conference will be one of these elusive cards.
Quick question, If I already registered the cards for my deck for online play, would the cards be re-usable online if they were later sold or given to another player for his/her personal deck ?
ANSWER FOUND: As long as you unregister your cards from PSN, you can trade or sell them if the buyer wants to play online.

Alright, here's the scoop on card distribution for the first EOJ set "Biolith Rebellion" on launch come Oct.24th (taken from a yahoo forum, hopefully accurate):
* 110 cards total
* 18 for each element (fire, water, earth, wood)
* 17 for biolith (metal)
* 1 white cubic (non-elemental)
* 20 spell cards
*****************************
FIRE - 18 cards - 5 common/4 uncommon/4 rare/4 ultra rare/1 phantom
WATER - 18 cards - 5 common/3 uncommon/6 rare/3 ultra rare/1 phantom
EARTH - 18 cards - 5 common/6 uncommon/3 rare/3 ultra rare/1 phantom
WOOD - 18 cards - 5 common/5 uncommon/4 rare/3 ultra rare/1 phantom
BIOLITH - 17 cards - 4 common/3 uncommon/4 rare/5 ultra rare/1 phantom
SPELLS - 20 cards - 6 common/9 uncommon/4 rare/1 ultra rare/0 phantom
OTHER - 1 card (white cubic) / ultra-rare
******************************
Commons - 30 cards
Uncommons - 30 cards
Rares - 25 cards
Ultra Rares - 20 cards (including White Cubic)
Phantoms - 5 cards
******************************
Finding an ultra-rare card will roughly be 1 in every 3 or 4 booster packs. So based on these stats, netting 2 sealed booster boxes (36 packs each) should get you very near a complete set.
Hope this info will enlighten you on how best to approach this game and to build your massive card collection. Cheers!
Update Note: What is that White Cubic card you ask? It is an ultra-rare card that represents an element-independent creature which costs one Mana to summon, but then can be sacrificed in order to summon any unit in your hand for no summon cost.
******************************
0 = Common 1 = Uncommon 2 = Rare 3 = Ultra rare 4 = "Phantom" (rarest)
Cards 001 - 018 : Fire // Cards 019 - 036 : Water // Cards 037 - 054 : Earth // Cards 055 - 072 : Wood
Cards 073 - 089 : Biolith (mecha) // Card 090 : no element (White Cubic) // Cards 091 - 110 : spells

Yep, this is why I think the collectable idea is kinda stupid.
They should just make it like a board game, or a normal card game. There's been quite a bit of success in the board/card game industry by making games in sets.

Isn't their knock off cards for magic and other games? Seems like the EoJ market would be small compared to the other major card collecting games. But the kind of people that would buy EoJ might also be the ones that would snatch up a set of knock offs... Come to think of it??? Where can I get a complete set :)

It's disappointing that you can copy cards, but really, I would feel like a douche using fake cards as it takes all the fun out of getting them. I've never been into card games but I still think I'll try to get all these cards, just to be able to use the full potential of the game.

^ True, we can still collect 'em the right way, but this puts a major damper on online play - knowing anyone and everyone very well may be using a fully loaded deck of printouts. That's takes a huge amount of the potential online fun out, but it's the nature of the camera-based game, I suppose. I doubt there is any way they could have prevented it. It'll still be fun for local play.

According to wikipedia they did something with the printing to prevent photocopying.
I'd like to pick this game up, but the cheapass in me says to wait as it doesn't sound like this game is going to do numbers. It's bad enough the PS3 install base isn't that high to begin with, but it being TCG niche (and even TCG guys, while they can be big spenders on their cards, tend to be pretty picky/critical of new stuff overall) I'm wondering if this will end up being another one of those clearance eye toy disasters in six months?
I'm contemplating getting it through amazon as it's currently $65.99 shipped free, but I know I'll kick myself if it ends up going DOTD.
Also, anyone know where they are selling booster boxes? I'd pick up a couple of those if I do end up getting the game.

Ohh really? Does it have to do with the registration of individual cards to your console?
I've heard people talk about that, but never any concrete details. I'll check the page, but yeah, I suppose that WOULD be a way to prevent it, huh - making a card unusable online if it's already been registered to another console (and then not unregistered at a later date if the person were to sell/trade it).

Your card decks have to be registered in their database online before you can play I believe. Can't look up the quote right now. My question is how it affects people who buy/trade single cards to other people.

Blog from Penny Arcade website reveals more info concerning the online mode of EOJ. Here are some highlights:
Essentially, you "register" your thirty card deck with the system itself, where it is stored and named for future use. This process is extremely straightforward: it is simply a matter of you laying your cards anywhere on the mat, a few at a time. It will probably take two minutes if you really keep on it. Then, you jump online, choose what nation you want to play for, and track down a partner. At this point, the game will "draw" you your five card hand by showing you the card art onscreen. You get one Mulligan (or redraw), but if you like your hand you move into the game proper. We laid out our deck by element, face up, and this smoothed the turn to turn process considerably.
In the build we have, and I hope this is changed for release, it shows you these cards in a single file line without their name or text - just the art. Once you got familiar with these images, slightly modified from their card format, it's pretty quick - but the names should be displayed on this screen. You can use the controller to pull up the names, but let's be serious - at no point should the player be forced to interact with a mundane controller once the game is underway.

Some good info...can't wait til release day.
I know it's probably not good for the long-term prospects of the game, but does anyone else feel they're more likely to buy the game knowing that you can just photocopy cards and play? I loved playing M:TG back in the day but one of the things that drove me out was the spiraling costs of staying competitive.
If everyone (or everyone with a color printer) has access to all the cards for online play purposes, it should level the playing field and allow the better deck designs/better players to shine through. Just my initial reaction ...

+ Addictive & fun gameplay, helpful & detailed tutorials
- Card recognition problems encountered; lackluster game modes
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/16/joystiq-review-the-eye-of-judgment-ps3/
There was no mention on the ease nor difficulty of card copying; however, the reviewer did say it was plausible to "theoretically scan cards that are not your own" for online play. So the idea of unique serial codes tied to each card and your PSN ID after registration seems to be hogwash. Oh well...

Gamezone website review is up: 8.3/10
EOJ received high marks for graphics and innovative use of the PS Eye. In summary,
"Somewhat of a niche game, The Eye of Judgment nonetheless makes the whole trading card game genre accessible and graphically entertaining. The game comes with the map, the Eye, a starter and bonus deck. New decks will be released as the game ages and players can create their own decks from the cards. The Eye of Judgment is one of those games that will fit a chilly afternoon, gathered around the television with a warm cup of tea at hand. This is a fun title and a breakthrough bit of technology."

Game Revolution Website gives it a B- (lukewarm review focused on the negatives):
+ High tension and competent online mode
- Lacks solo story campaign; mundane interface and undetailed deck editing mode
- ability to cheat thru card copying and tricking the PS Eye
http://www.gamerevolution.com/review/ps3/the_eye_of_judgement
Another confirmation that this game lacks copy protection security. What happened to all the hoopla from the initial PR folks about the preventive measures against cheating with colored copies? Was it all BS?

It contains the COMPLETE card list with info on what cards are in which deck.

(For example, the starter deck contains 2 rares only, and multiple duplicates of various commons & uncommons. The theme decks have 1 ultra-rare and various multiples across ALL races & spells.)
There's also a helpful guide on all the details on the card itself.

All about preference, but I'm a sucka for mystery surprises...so a couple of booster paks to start for me. If you get too many duplicates, then we can start an EOJ card trading thread. Those theme decks are pretty diversified, though...plus you do get a nifty booklet with tips & background info to flush out the game.

Yet another reason why I think they should have gone the non-collectable game route. These card rarities are just arbitrary printing limits. They could have gone for a more interesting deck building mechanic, or more dynamic cardplay.

The amazon thing sounds like their distributer is the problem or they way oversold preorders. Did anyone that ordered from amazon have their order shipped? It sucks that we have to wait another week but the CAG in me can't let go of the $59.99 no shipping no tax part. The funny thing is that even though the booster packs I ordered on Amazon did not show a delay they still have not shipped.
Has anyone found booster packs in-store yet?
Right. Amazon isn't always timely with their pre-orders and they will give out conservative delivery estimates if they have any issues with their distributors, so I'd take that with a grain of salt--doesn't mean the game is delayed, just means Amazon may be having a delay with shipping, that's all. We should start seeing the items in-store tomorrow, if anything.

Has anyone found booster packs in-store yet?
Someone on the yahoo forum found the BOOSTER PACKS readily available at the local Toys'R'Us (alongside the Pokemon & Yugioh packs), but the theme decks are still MIA. He was able to scan a snapshot of all his cards to verify his statement. On a somewhat related note, the odds of finding an ultra-rare card is 1 in 7 or 8 booster pks as stated on the backside foil. Gotta collect 'em all!

I went into GS tonight to see if this would be in tomorrow, and was told they're very unlikely to get any copies in, only preorders (and maybe not even those).
Then I was told there were no preorders for it, and it was taken off the list about a week ago. Not sure if this is just because of my location, but this is from a reputable employee, not the usual bullshit I get from other stores. I'm hoping they'll atleast get one in tomorrow so I can grab it, either that or I'll be going on a road trip.

In theory yeah, while the game does come with a starter deck, you're supposed to want to pick up boosters or theme decks to collect and play with. However, apparently it's possible to circumvent whatever security measures where used in the printing process, so I guess you could get by with just the starter set. Either way, though I'm still getting this game and will probably continue to support the game if Sony/Hasbro/WotC does.

damn I just bought the game and people already found a way to cheat. I hope that Sony will find a way to stop that from happening. In the future each card needs to be numbered so that if card 123 is used online in more than x number of consoles.. maybe 20, then those users get banned, or perhaps the card is deemed invalid.

Your first summon can be on any square but after that anything you summon must be placed adjacent to any (yours or opponent's) other creature. That's what the white borders are indicating.

I think this next week then I'll be buying two decks... Whenever I start a TCG I usually buy two starter decks and then test the gameplay to see if it's worth investing.
Also, does this game have a fully fledged official site? all I can find is a bare bones playstation.com page.

Using copied cards isn't cheating, it's theft. They can't do anything special with them, and there isn't anyway to tell online if someone has copies or not. The cards a pretty balance so don't worry about the handful of people that may use copies. Most of us like having the actual cards.

You can easily just write the Element names and icons on pieces of paper to put on the mats. Then flip them over when you do things like field quakes.
However, the draw of the game is the ease of play for all players by having the PS3 handle the rules for you.

No, you can play the game like a regular CCG w/o the PS3. It won't be as interesting w/o the PS3 calculating everything for you and giving you the pretty graphics and effects on screen, but it's "playable".

I picked it up on Thursday, got around to playing it today. I was a little hesitant. I don't want to get into a money suck with the cards, but it looked really neat (saw the trailer) and the positive reviews made it sound like something I shouldn't miss, given my love of card games.
So far, I'm very pleased. The game is challenging. There's a lot to remember, and I wouldn't want to play without the PS3 (yet). There's the elements, the directions, the various attacks, counterattacks, and weak points. Plus, I'm still at the point where what a card actually does can be surprising. Flame Magus, for example, initially looked a lot more powerful than it turned out to be, but I think there's fun to be had with that card.
It's a little bit like Duel Masters, a little bit like MtG, and so it feels both familiar and bewildering.
Couldn't find cards for sale today, not at GS, TRU, or Target.

Well folks I won my first match against the CPU!!!!!!! I never liked card games, like this MtG, etc but I'm really enjoying EoJ; this game could have easily been a card game, with no physical cards, but having the game (PS3) keeping track of the game really helped bring me to keep playing this game. I don;t have to run the game [keep track of rules] but rather I can just focus on playing the game.
blandstalker - you might want to call around for the cards, I got some today from GS, I picked up the Biolith Scourge, and Earth decks. and a booster pack - the best card I got from that was Green Lycanthrope.
That's cool. I like that the PS3 handles all the calcs and such so I can focus on higher level stuff. Sounds like this is the kind of game I'll really enjoy so I hope that FV ships me the game sometime soon. :p.
I think I'll just start buying theme decks if Amazon puts 'em in my gold box now.
Edit: Scratch that. I just checked and Amazon is giving a 1 to 2 month lead on theme decks now. 1 to 2 months! Yoiks...

How are you guys doing the lighting? I was having some trouble with it being to light or too dark :) I had every lamp in the house out to the card table. :) Sometimes turning the lamp on and off would help where the "correct" amount of light would hit the card and it would show.
The natural light coming through the window from outside seemed to really work best but I have 2 problems with that. 1) i want to be able to play all night and 2) i don't want the neighbors seeing me play such a nersy game. :)
That being said when it was working quickly I was really enjoying it! Very fun! But my wife didn't seem to understand it that well...

Man, Amazon better send me a shipping notice tomorrow. I preordered last week with the free shipping option. My estimated shipping date is November 10th. However if you order right now and choose the 1 or 2 day option, they're guaranteeing that they ship it out Monday. I guess thats how it works, the 'free shipping' costs them so they throw any who choose it on the backburner.

The first couple of games I played, I had problems with square 7. Weird, but somehow lighting related.
I went back to the setup screen -- the one where it asks you to put the card in the middle until you see an icon -- and noticed that you can check all the squares. I messed with the settings until I was able to do that, and had no further problems.
The names of the settings don't make intuitive sense to me, but all I really care about is the results.

why are these stores so slow to carry PS3 games and stuff. Eye of Judgement should be everywhere.. but I didn't see it at Best buy, didn't see it at GS, and the cards are hardly no where to be found.. .not in Target, BB, or CC; also today I went to CC today to get GHIII, they have the PS2, Wii and 360 on the display.. .no PS3... had to jump through hoops to get the PS3 version. Ratchet and Clank released.. early, cant find it anywhere.. except for BB where they got it locked up in a damn cage in the front of the store. Seems to me there's a pattern of difficulty in finding PS3 products.

The GS in Davie... University and Sterling... had the PS3 camera by itself... so I'm thinking that maybe they got the EOJ game in as well.
Further in the thread it says the initial run is limited to 100,000. Doesn't seem like Sony is very excited about this product.
And shit, I was waffling about picking up theme decks from hasbrotoystore dot com ($10 off $50 coupon from the transformers thread...which = about $5 off less shipping in reality, but no tax), and now I look and they're out of stock already! I live in Broward and FWIW, none of the area Best Buys have ever showed this game available for pickup and I don't know if Circuit City carries it at all since it's not on their website. I think it's probably just a small initial release and then they'll ramp up distribution depending on demand. Also, maybe the awkward size of the bundle kept stores from ordering as many copies as a regular game.

No, you can play the game like a regular CCG w/o the PS3. It won't be as interesting w/o the PS3 calculating everything for you and giving you the pretty graphics and effects on screen, but it's "playable".
I personally wouldn't be playing it that way though.
I've never played any other CCG...do you really have to keep track of all that stuff yourself? I coudn't even imagine the confusion doing that! I never thought I'd say it, but thank god for my PS3! :)

oh, good point, that does explain why target was able to display the game; because their shelves make it easier for them to display the game. Target usually has EOJ hanging up next to the Singstar mic bundles which are almost the same size as the EOJ bundles.

The card copy thing doesn't damper my desire to buy more cards, but it does kill my desire to play strangers online.
It shouldn't. They're still restricted by the rules; scanning in printed cards is the same thing as playing with proxies, if you've ever played other TCGs. It doesn't bother me much; if you're a collecting fiend, you're going to buy the real cards anyway. I'll have to check my local Target for themes/boosters tonight. I never knew they'd be carrying them! :bouncy:
By the way, for those of you having sensitivity issues, try these settings: 50Hz > Warm > Dark. Works great in simple ambient room light.
Thanks for the light setting suggestions, liquidcross. As far as the card copy thing, it's more of the principle. If they're willing to cheat on actually buying the cards, who knows what kind of player they're going to be?
And I'm a sad panda at the moment--FV sent me a backorder notice with their standard 2-4 week lead cushion. Oh well, I do have a lot of other things on my plate. I do know that I'm definitely getting this game, inventory willing, and will try to pick up theme decks and/or boosters in the meantime.

Also, I just beat another player with my starter deck who had nothing but the most powerful rare cards in his deck. I won easily although it took time. There was never a point in the game where I wasn't in the lead, even when he had a Juno and Obsidian dragon out.
The main reason is that the more powerful cards out there often have higher mana costs to summon or use. So while he's saving up for his single powerful creature, put out groups of smaller creatures on their own element.

Very true. Fortunately, in this case, I think the pros outweigh the cons. I'll likely go the proxy route to try out cards, but I fully plan to buy the ones I like (just like back in my MTG days). I just hope I can find some starters and boosters soon, regardless! :)

That's good to know--so do most, if not all, the rares have high mana cost? That would certainly keep the newbs who think nothing but big hitters are going to mean lop-sided wins firmly in their place.

Almost all of the rare/powerful cards have high mana costs in some form. If they don't have high costs in one area, they'll have a significant weakness in another area.
For example, there's pretty cheap alien looking creature, I think about 4 mana or so, that has a perfect dodge and can do magic attacks anywhere on the board, albiet it's still somewhat costing to activate with I think a 3 or 4. However, he has only 1 health and some other weakess related to element.
Now, I'm not saying that those better cards won't make your deck more powerful. But they won't make your deck more powerful without the knowledge and skill to use them.
I just picked up a Biolith deck, it's pretty neat. Focuses a lot on 4-5 cost biolith creatures with only 4-6 low level creatures. It has a few interesting ways of getting extra mana to summon those creatures. I'll probably throw my extra parmetic feast in there. It's also geared heavily towards the biolith field, but that's obvious, but the neat thing is the combo the deck has with a biolith creature that fieldquakes any fields adjacent to him.
So, it's a completely different style of play from the very balanced starter deck. Heavy hitter monsters, high mana cost, so you bring them out more slowly, but if you get them on biolith fields they'll stick around for a while. It's a more slow and powerful domination of the board as opposed to the balanced spread of the starter deck.
I think I'll throw in some of those healing spells from the starter deck, the one that heals all creatures of the same element for 3, very useful in a deck that's so focused on one element. Also putting in some beguiling fogs to make sure my bioliths are always facing the right direction is useful too. But, I've got to be careful to keep the mana generation creatures, I may just drop the spells that help pull cards, although I suspect that for a slow deck like this having a larger hand is also useful. Ah decisions decisions.
One of the best aspects of this game may be its 30 card deck limit.
Shoki
10-30-2007, 03:37 AM
So is it better to have a balanced deck that can take advantage of all the element squares? Or build a more focused deck? Biolith sounds great but they are all summons locked... anway very cool game... the more I play it the more i am into it!
Vanigan
10-30-2007, 03:58 AM
Well actually, it looks like the summon lock only prevents you from summoning a creature on a field that isn't of its element. So you can still summon a summon locked creature on a field that matches its element, the only thing the summon lock breaking does is allow you to summon it anywhere. And there are also spells that are summon locked.
What I'm saying is balanced and focused decks both work. But even a balanced deck has to have combos of cards that can take advantage of an enemy weakness. And likewise a focused deck still has to have other element types.
liquidcross
10-30-2007, 10:15 AM
Definitely try to use at least a two-element deck. Otherwise, an enemy could exploit an elemental weakness, and you'd be helpless against them!

Summoning locks open when there's four or more creatures on the field.

Are there any thoughts about what you get with decks vs. what you get with boosters?
For example, a booster nets you 8 cards for 3.99 or 0.50 per card, with 1 rare, 2 uncommon, and 5 common.
A deck nets you 30 cards or 0.50 per card, but what is the card distribution like? MtG premade decks used to have less in terms of uncommons/rares, but they also cost less.
Also, anyone know if you can/will be able to buy a box of boosters?

I played MtG wayyyy back during the very start of the 3rd edition run. Still have tons of old cards laying out in my storage house.
I don't have any decks or boosters yet, but I think you're right as far as the boosters having more uncommon or rare cards than the theme decks. One thing the theme decks do have that the boosters don't is a summoner's companion, which suggests that the theme deck is primarily aimed at new players who want to get more acquainted with the various "factions" of the game. Either way, boosters are your best shot at getting "special" cards, if that is what you are after.

Ebay is your friend.
I'd avoid ebay myself right now. The game is too new and the stock is limited enough where there seems to be a lot of...unrealisitic...asking prices for cards and such. I just took a peek and pretty much everything, even the common cards, are going for a premium. Honestly, I don't think it's worth it at this time as for the most part, you should be able to at least backorder online, if not find cards in store.
As for factory booster boxes, I saw someone preordering them prior to release on ebay for $109 a box + shipping. Haven't seen it since.

At this point, I don't know what I want ;) Well, lots of cards on the cheap.
I'm not familiar enough with the cardset to know what cards I should even be thinking about at this point. I got some boosters yesterday, and apart from the Phantom card, I was able to identify rare cards only by process of elimination.
With MtG, I knew that over time boosters were better, since you ended up getting all the commons anyway, plus a wider variety of rares/uncommons.
I don't know if I care about the whole collectible aspect yet. I always used to be the guy with the strange or offbeat decks, and I like going after interesting deck ideas. But if those ideas require uncommon or rare cards...
