Word on the street -- and by 'street' we mean in a restaurant in a West End town, call the police, there's a madman around...nevermind -- but word on the street informs us that a playable Ninja Gaiden Sigma one-level demo will be released on the PlayStation Network as a download today.

Scuttlebutt says that ninpo will be available in the demo (something that Ryu Hayabusa ordinarily doesn't get until later in the game), and that it will run in 1080p for those equipped to enjoy such resolutions. Another tidbit of interest is that Ryu's new dual katanas will be available in the download, allowing potential buyers to get a sample of what it's like to control Sigma's hero after he's had a quick lunch of pop rocks and Red Bull.

The real scoop, though, is that if you can beat the one-level demo, you'll unlock a 'special mission' in which Rachel becomes playable, warhammer in tow. So, are you an eager beaver hardcore Ninja Gaiden fan dying to try out the ultimate version of the game, or one of the curious, sitting on the fence until you get to try it out for yourself? Well, in either case, your wishes will be granted later this afternoon.

BTW, I was playing some GTHD (force feedback rawks) for a while, and while I was playing, the Sigma demo was still downloading. I thought that the downloads all paused while playing any game? Or is that only if you play online?

d/l now that i'm home. Can't wait. I really loved the original Xbox. The difficulty was just right for me, though I found it really easy eventually to get by after using the flying swallow on bosses.

Either way good stuff :D. Glad I skipped out on black so I can enjoy this version more.

Last boss battle was intense. I was down to my final sliver of health and he had a few hits left as well.

I blocked his attack hit him with a good combo, and I thought I had him beat, but then he blocked, and we locked up! I began rapidly shaking my controller to break free. I broke free and shoved him forward applied the final combo to defeat him with me myself only having a few hits left myself.

It was intense I tells ya.

And ya the game looks bad ass.

yeah, i'm quite happy of the 1080p. My first 1080p ps3 game was Marvel ultimate Alliance and it ran like a piece of crap. This and Lair are my hope for more 1080p in the future.

That mission mode is pretty fun, but once I get to the dinosaurs it is all over. I don't know if it was in the original or not, but you have to use this girl named rachel.

But y'know what? It really doesn't matter. This game is bad-ass. I still suck at it, of course, but that's what "dog mode" is for. :-P

It looks like all the pictures-- stuff that's far away is slightly out of focus like that at certain angles. It's a bad ass little effect that I haven't seen before.

I beat it on Very hard.

Just keep avoiding those dino's spin move and fire and definetally there grab and hit them with everything you got.

They're weird. they take a certain number of hits before they stagger, so you have to do single hits a couple times before going for a combo (or else they get you with that bite move.) You can also backflip all the way to a wall and hope they roll into it (if they hit the wall, they get staggered) or wait until they start the flaming breath move, and wail on them from behind. If you're near them at all, you should be constantly rolling out of their way.

try going to the equipment screen when you play. you can use every weapon in the demo, except the wooden sword, vigoorian flails, and the paddle. ;)

Yeah the demo does have the dual swords which I have to admit are pretty badass. But still I might wait for a price drop on this one since I went through Ninja Gaiden and Black twice each.

This is correct. Though if the Collector's Edition has NG 1-3, it makes that extra $10 that much easier to spend. I won't have to keep Black around then.

Maybe it's been too long since I played it on the Xbox, but it feels so much smoother and more responsive now. I still think DMC3 is better, but I enjoyed that demo quite a bit, so I'm glad I have it preordered.

Also playing as Rachel was quite a bit of fun. Hopefully there will be plenty of segments where we can play as her. Granted I would rather have had Ayane playable T.T

Here are my impressions:

so after spending a lot of time with this, I've noticed all this nerdy stuff. This first part mostly pertains to karma freaks who like to go for high scores:

--The controls are definitely tighter as Rei no Otaku said. I mapped block and "center camera" to R2 and L2 and it feels perfect.

--Ryu and enemies now have a falling stagger animation which leaves them open to attack that hit low (but not mid or high.) This and guard crushes replace the standing stagger/standing guard crush animation from black (which made it easy to kill everything.)

--ryu and enemies can now have their guard crushed completely. There's a weird animation between Ryu and the enemy that looks like something shattering when you successfully do this. There is something behind crushing guard that I haven't figured out yet though-- sometimes two normal slashes will do it, sometimes they'll block a whole combo with no problems. I'm not sure if Ryu can have his guard crushed by normal enemies though.

--Enemies have all kinds of new reactions and attack patterns. most importantly, you now get knocked out of the air constantly if you go for constant Izuna drops around other enemies. no more cheese! overall, the enemies are a lot smarter--they're adjusted to the tighter controls. i.e. fights look a lot more hectic and choreographed and more "ninja-y."

--the flying swallow is no longer practically invincible! it's much stricter on when it hits, ryu flies much further, and there's a longer recovering animation.

--I think the level 2 Dabilahro is the same as the level 3 Dabilahro in Black. I could be wrong..someone check this.

--Ayane looks like some kind of weird zombie alien!!

So, the question on everyone's mind: "Is this like Ninja Gaiden Black? lol xbox port." The answer is yes and no. it's apparent that this is a PS3 game-- there are already so many differences graphics wise that it's clear that the whole game is going to look a hell of a lot better and very different. Overall, the final game will probably meet or beat Gears of War in the graphics department. The first level already has so much detail--it's absolutely beautiful. In NGB, it was kind of a plain level--just some rocks to climb, a dojo, and a bunch of ninja. Now it's alive--there are lots of plants and shrubs every where, the lighting is very dynamic, everything has texture. it's a huge upgrade.

Gameplay wise, if you've played black, you'll notice small differences, but it'll basically feel the same. Of course it's like Ninja Gaiden Black, but it's apparent that this is the perfect version-- everything is tighter, enemies are smarter. later on, there are new levels with rachel and new boss fights which will mix things up.

Rachel is bad ass, but different then Ryu. She has a very lady-like elegance about her, even when she's in the middle of being attacked by red dinosaurs. She's more precise and less flashy than Ryu, so it's a completely different experience with her.

some people may not want to spend $60 on the principle that they've already bought and beaten this game and it isn't a crazy decision to wait to find it cheaper. However, this also isn't the kind of game that makes you wonder why you paid $60 for it--the production value and gameplay are worth $60, plus there'll end up being a few extra hours worth new gameplay (maybe more if Rachel has a large mission set) --not like this crappy Spiderman 2.1 dvd that advertises "480 seconds of new footage!" yeah, 8 more minutes of spiderman swinging through a city and maybe a shot of peter parker eating breakfast with his grandma- lick my nuts, evil dvd re-releasers!

For people who didn't own an xbox last gen-- for the love of god, get this immediately. mug the UPS guy if you have to.

Black doens't have NG 1-3 on it. Only the original does. Black has the Arcade NG on it. But hey the original costs less than $10 so pick it up again.

and don't forget to abuse the automatic ultimate techs. Like right before you land from a jump, you can hold triangle and he'll automatically go into position for an ultimate tech without the lag time that you would get from a standing position.

And if you have floating orbs around, he automatically absorbs those and does a full powered tech, without having to charge! This is also where you get big points from, in case you like getting high scores.

Well crap! You've taken this thing to a whole new level!

Even if it's a remake, if they didn't fuck it up (which they didn't), then this is easily the best next gen game period. Of course, my standards are a little off and I suppose Rachel might have something to do with it. Point is, it's worth it, and there's supposedly a lot of new stuff that can justify the price.

Apossum, your techniques above, do those apply to only Sigma or are there things like that in Black as well? I've not actually played through NG since I got it at release on the Xbox. Now that I own Black for the 360 I think it's time for another playthrough, but if I can have all sorts of fancy moves to go with it, that'd be great. ;)

forgot to mention that the full circle + hard slash (the Y button for the xbox) move may not be available on the dragon sword immediately-- the demo gives you a fully levelled dragon sword to play with.

That's another thing for the newcomers-- the demo is a bit misleading since they give you powered up weapons to use. Now imagine playing through very hard with only a level 1 dragon sword. pure torture! :lol:

oh fucking cool! i just installed it last night and man, i was blown away by the graphic. Yeah, look is not everything my ass... i can't believe this is just a demo, i still haven't "beat" it yet.

I like playing with Rachel, more than I like playing w/ Ryu... (at least for the demo)

I can't wait to get started on Sigma when it comes out... I hope that Tecmo keeps the series coming on the ps3.

I think this game is almost like a practice run for Tecmo... after this game I know that they'll be comfortble with the ps3 hadware.

Yeah, I really like playing with Rachel as well.
Rather than call her slow, I'd say she's more graceful.
I can pull off the UTs much better with her.

A look at the options menu for her and looks like she'll have multiple weapons as well. (not to mention hairstyles, ha)

The difficulty levels for her mission don't seem to do anything. I got my highest score and had the easiest time beating it on Master Ninja.

Very hard with Ryu is kicking my ass however >_<

Yeah, I noticed that too. I got better and better as I upped the difficulty with Rachel.
Too easy now.

I'm glad Very Hard is hard for you too! Damn purple ninjas keep grabbing me.
I don't make it very far. Slowly but surely, I'm getting better.

Is there really a difficulty higher than this? Master Ninja... oh man.

I got the ranking "GREATER NINJA" which sounds good but I'm not very good at all...how does karma work anyways? Is it based on how many times you get it, number of combos? Techniques you use? Enemies killed?

It looks absolutely utterly gorgeous, a demo of an X-Box port already looks better than anything else I've seen this gen

The Rachel mission, I haven't finished it, I always get killed by the dinosaurs, but my god, it looks good

GT HD and Ninja Gaiden Demo are honestly enough to buy a PS3.

I'm apparenlty missing something. I've beaten the demo on hard, but I still can't land a UT. You just hold triangle, right? If so, what kind of zen ninja magic do you use to keep from getting hit while it's charging? You can't move, you can't block - do you will the enemies away? I read something about charging it mid-air, but I don't see where holding the button down in mid-air does anything. Grrrrr.....

i've noticed sometimes that after comin off a combo, it charges really quick, but i duno how to work that out. I ended up not using it when beating the demo. It probably would've made it a little easier

Although I own a Wii and PS2, my brother just picked up a PS3 (mainly for Blu-Ray), and he basically has every free thing downloaded from the store on his PS3 right now including this.

I'm getting pounded on Hard Mode with Ryu. However, I'm up to Master Ninja level with Rachel. It took me forever to beat Normal with her, but only once on hard. That makes no sense. My strategy: Hold that L1 button like crazy.

Since this is my first experience in "Next-Gen" so to speak, I've got to say, it delivers what the PS3 offers. My brother said he's definitely going to get this one when it comes out.

here's a rundown of the karma system:

karma is based on the amount of time it takes to kill the enemies and how many enemies you kill. combos kind of count--you get 10 points for each hit. so the game rewards speed, not combos. if you hit the "karma score" button, you get the karma-o-meter. You'll notice when you get into a fight, time starts counting down. if you kill them within the time limit, you get an extra 10,000 karma.

This is as addicting as much as it is a pain in the ass because the enemy has to spray blood and leave an orb to count as dead to the timer. Some of the fights are really fucking hard to get under time (like when the two guys jump out of the dojo.)

so imagine you've killed a group of guys, there's .8 of a second left and you kill the last guy. he might lay on the ground for .9 more tenths of a second before "officially" dying, screwing up your bonus!!! This will happen repeatedly if you get into perfecting your karma score.

Anyway, Ultimate Techniques give you 2000 for a slightly charged (the "burst" sound happens once and he's surrounded by blue. he'll just slash through and cut off some heads)

--then 5000 for fully charged (second "burst" surrounded by red energy with the combo at the end)

Here's a tip about UT's-- if you start charging and absorb 1 yellow orb, it instantly goes to a slight charge. if you absorb 2 yellow orbs you get a fully charged one. Also, 1 blue orb gives you a fully charged UT.

In the demo, there's no need for yellow orbs, so it's best to try UT all the time with them. and if you're good on energy and see a blue orb, go for a fully charged one. This is how you rack up points, kill suckas in the time limit, and become the world chinpoko master.

maybe you're doing them without knowing? If you bring up the score meter, it'll say "Ultimate Technique X points" if you do one successfully.

This is how you don't get hit-- you don't start holding it in mid-air, it's more like a second before he lands. he'll begin the charge without doing a hard slash or whatever first. Say you've killed some guys and are busy jumping around while some orbs are floating around. Plan out a time to land while doing the "instant charge"-- you'll absorb those orbs instantly, let go and you'll have an ultimate technique. you just have to plan a safe spot to land, but sometimes you can pull off the insta-UT while guys are mobbing you.

Also, the full circle on the analog + triangle UT starts charging right away as well.

I wish I was the ninja master. I can't beat Very Hard for the life of me, though I had no trouble with it in NGB :( They must have a whole core devoted to AI or something...that first room full of purple ninjas is flerking ridiculous.

Well, I finally played the demo on PS3. I'll agree it looks pretty, but now I remember why I passed on the XBOX version. I hate the camera...it annoyed me very quickly.

it does take some active adjusting, but that becomes second nature after a while. you just have to click the recenter button whenever you change directions.

The boxart looks sweet and I'm loving the demo myself. I thought Ninja Gaiden was all right on Xbox, but I wasn't too happy it lacked camera control. Now I'm glad it has it, so I definitely must get it. It's listed as the most popular demo too, which is awesome.

As with the mission mode in Gaiden Black, the content is fun, action packed, and designed to test your skills. I was testing out my calibration last nite and messed around with NGS again. Then I noticed screen tearing, wtf? Anyone notice this also? I'm playing 1080p and its noticeable right where you start out.

I noticed it as well, although, it seemed to go away right after that initial outdoor section.

BTW, I really like that song they're using for that opening area before you actually get to the Ninja Hideout or whatever it's called.

Yeah, it's a Vsync issue. But I really didn't notice any screen tearing after that initial sequence.

Also, guys, I played through the demo like 4 times yesterday... I cannot get enough of this fucking game despite having played through the original and Black extensively.

Yeah, Very Hard wasn't too bad IMO. The most annoying things about the purple ninjas are the shuriken they throw and the grab where they stab you in the chest. Honestly, roll like a motherfucker. Don't even stop for a second if they're near you. The best tactic for taking them out is to run up a wall and hit triangle to slash downwards. Then, when they're on the ground, sweep them upwards by hitting forwards and triangle, slash them three times, then Izuna drop them. That also hurts other enemies that might be around them.

Japanese outlet Game Watch is reporting that the final retail release of Ninja Gaiden Sigma for the PLAYSTATION 3 will have a very cool feature. Players can earn bonus in-game currency—yellow orbs—simply by playing the demo version of Sigma. The more you play, the more you'll earn.

Team Ninja released a trial version of the game on the PlayStation Store in April, with the retail version expected this month in Japan and North America. Guess I'll have to finally beat Very Hard mode as I want a little walkin' around money from day one.

I don't know but according to EB/Gamestop:

This Collectors Edition will be a 2-disc set with special hi-res packaging, a behind the scenes DVD from Team Ninja, and special codes to unlock Ryu and Rachael mission modes.

I played though the first 4 levels. So far it's what I expected and more. They added a new part after the second boss fight, which is pretty amazing, the scenery and all.

I got my first hit of slow down though. It was when he gets to the 4th level. I went around a corner and the game's fps dropped mighty quickly right when 3 enemies came onto the screen. Bummer.

Also played though a little as Rachael. She has the DOA boobie physics. Right when Ryu first meets her she is bouncing all over the place yet she isn't even walking around she is standing still letting them hang. The doubts I had about her went away gameplay wise. She controls the way she looks, mighty fine.

And just like any Japanese game with blood and gore, you cannot decapitate enemies.
