View Full Version : Removing peanut butter from a PS2?

Odd request, but hear me out...
One of my younger sister's friends has - or rather had - a PS2. Her younger brother managed to get his hands on it, and there's now apparently peanut butter (and possibly jelly) INSIDE of the PS2.
The girl has offered to give us the PS2 for free because her parents have already agreed to buy another one. I'm not sure how bad the damage to the system is, but it sounds like the disc tray won't open anymore. The warranty at this point is expired, and there's not a chance in hell of buying another to "exchange," so that brings me to my question...
What's the best way to disassemble and clean a PS2? Does anyone happen to have any experience with peanut butter inside of the system, or any other system? :D

Ive never heard of peanut butter in a system before, but I dont think i can be that bad. I have gotten more than a few laptop's at work with coffee spilt on them and for the most part, they still work after. Just take the system apart as much as u can and clean it out good. Put it back together and hope for the best....

I'm pretty sure you can call their customer service and pay to extend the warranty. I know PC manufacturers let you do that, so I don't see why SCEA would be any different (on hardware, at least).

Unless he took a knife and went nuts with a big glob of peanut butter I can't see how it can be that bad. Disc tray won't open probably because the stuff hardened on it. As snotnose_colossal said crack that baby open and start cleaning.

So long as you don't use any solvent that will destroy the board and make sure everything is completely dry before reassembling, you can actually wash the parts off.
From what you describe the contamination may be limited to the DVD drive. If that is the case it would be a lot less trouble to just obtain a replacement drive and install that.

A manufacturer's warranty covers defects in manufacturing. If they open the PS2 up and find gobs of dried peanut butter.. thats customer abuse baby. The warranty is worth about as much as the contract from Major League the manager takes a piss on in this case.

My advice is to put some strawberry jelly in it as well and then eat it.

You could try using Isopropyl Alcohol. It's used to clean CPU thermal paste off of CPU's. Thermal paste has a similar consistency so who knows. Worth a shot especially since it won't damage electronics. Wet naps are a good source of Isopropyl. You can find these at your local electronics store or KFC.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH i didnt even see that when i put my last post up thats hilarious!!!!!! you had me laughing for a while!!!
Send in an army of ants. Then after a few days, put some food outside, but near the PS2. If the ants can manage to get in and out, of it then they just cleaned it out for you.
Warning: This is my boyfriends idea, so it probably wont work.

Hey ive had a similar problem before, and first things first,
DONT EXTEND THE WARRANTY...
Warranty woldnt cover it most likely anyways...
Secondly, its like $60 the last time i tried to get it
now about getting out hat peanut butter...
Check around the ps2 for the screws...
and unscrew them
then carefully lift off the top piece and its off...
just use like a toothpick or Q-tip to clean it, dont wanna risk messing it up any more...

my dad spilled juice on my gameboy.......the buttons were horrendously sticky and almost unplayable but i still played it and later took it apart and made my own buttons for it

after you open the ps2, take a digiphoto of the damage. it'd be interesting to see how much peanut butter got in there.
and smurf, take a digiphoto of your gameboy with custom buttons... what did you use?
i once had one of those crappy third party psx controllers and the d-pad broke, so i stuck a pen in the center and used some adhesive and made a ghetto ass joystick. it actually worked pretty good, but the pen broke.

i had some guy ship me a gameboy pocket, it had jelly between, and under the buttons and screen. I was wtfing and then i opened it up, took a q-tip and cleaned it all up then it was all good. took about 10 minutes
