Which game in the series is the best one to get if I havent played them before? Do they all have a continous story or do the basically stand alone?

They stand alone pretty well, but some of the jokes carry from one game to the other.
My favorite in the series is "Going Commando", although "Up Your Arsenal" is a close second. Buy both!
Avoid "Deadlocked". It's R&C Lite... with levels that end far too abruptly to be satisfying.

hes right theyre all amazing ( i havent played the 4th one though deadlocked) but ive played and beaten 1 -3 and if you want to try them id start with the first and work your way up. it will get you used to the game and its kind of difficult to play the 2nd or 3rd games and then go back to the first because its still a good game but you can feel its age in the way it controls.
the second one has some cool flying missions not to be missed and the story is awesome.
the 3rd one however has very fun battle arena challenges so any of these games is worth owning. im personally trying to collect them all even the 4th one as well as the jax games which ive only playd one of. theyre worth owning and have replayability.

Play them in order 1 - 3. If you don't want to play all 3, then just play 2 and then 3. You probably really won't enjoy/be able to play 1 after playing 2 or 3, mainly due to changes in the weapon quick select.

:(
I liked Deadlocked.
I'd pick 2 if you want to play the best in the series, but you'll immediately want to go to 3, and if you want another helping, Deadlocked is quality, even if it focuses more on shooting action.

3 is the most refined.
2 has the best story.
1 is the framework for the series.
All three games are near perfect in their execution of the platform/shooter genre mashup.

I agree pretty much with what everyone's saying.
However, if you plan on playing this series at all, I'd definitely recommend playing 1 first, not because it's good, but because it will piss you off later. The guns definitely suck compared to the other games. This game is more difficult than the others, not because of actual difficulty but because of the control. You don't even get strafe until late in the game, and even when you do, the controls just feel sloppier than the other Ratchet games.
2 and 3 are awesome, pure and simple. If you play through 1, you will get to use your save for buying certain guns from 1, but IIRC you can get those anyway after you beat the game. This also happens if you have save file from 2 and use it in 3. Don't recall though if Deadlocked had this.
Deadlocked was disappointing. Even though it was still fun... like everyone else said it was pretty much R+C Lite.
One of the greatest things I love about these games is that they actually made them so that it is great to go through and play again after you beat it. The added difficulty and being able to upgrade your guns even more was awesome.
I am really excited about the next game. It looks like its not going to disappoint. I also thought that they might have been done with the series so I'm glad to see they haven't given up on it. I would have cried if they turned the series over to someone else.

probably going to go with just UYA for now. I dont really have the time to invest in all three games and UYA seems to have everything the first two have and more. Once I get some more time and clear out my back log of games then I might check out the first two.
Thanks for the help

If you don't have time for all 3 then get Going Commando. You can always play UYA later, but going backwards won't be nearly as good.

Deadlocked wasn't so much R&C Lite to me... then again, I played it on the higher difficulties. It was just the R&C gunplay with all the platforming boiled away, and spiced up for maximum zestiness.

Deadlocked wasn't "easy", but if you were in the middle of an arena, blasting away, having fun, and then you accidentially fulfilled the mission requirements (which was very easy to do), then the screen faded out, the music played, and you were unceremoniously YANKED from whatever you were doing (blasting, collecting, etc.). I hated not being able to decide WHEN I left a level.
There were some fun missions, but the story mode was overall very short, and the missions were very basic. I "maxed out" all my ammunication very, very quickly, much more quickly than in any of the other R&C games.
The arenas in GC & UYA, however, are a blast, and much more imaginative.

This is what I'm getting frustrated with, too. There are many bolts to be had, but I can't grab them because the missions end too quickly. I could have passed on Deadlocked, because the other titles were just so much better. I think that Going Commando > UYA, but both are pretty fun. OP, would you be totally against playing both?
