Hi folks,

I am a new Suikoden series fan, and have found a used copy of Suikoden IV for $9.95 which I am considering purchasing.

I have read some mixed/weak reviews of this installment. Is it really that bad? Is it worth picking up? Why the mixed reviews?

Any opinions appreciated. :)

$10 is steal deal for Suikoden 4. Go for it.. .. I still hope Konami re-release suikoden 1/2 on PSP us version.

I wouldn't play through that game again if someone paid me. The game was horrendous.

It is honestly the worst Suikoden. It has the weakest story and lamest main characters of any Suikoden. That... and the sailing... dear god, the sailing.

If you're a Suikoden fan, play it, $10 isn't bad. But really, its no where near 3 let alone 1 or 2.

I think it's worth a playthrough if you're into the Suikoden universe but it's not something I'll be replaying at all. I also agree it's the worst Suikoden out of all five. Just make sure that if you do get it, learn to speed sail! I didn't find out that you could do that until I had about 1 hour left in the game and it extended my play time by about two hours as I just sat there in awe of my stupidity of not figuring out until then.

However I do think Suikoden Tactics helped Suikoden IV a bit with the story and the characters were more enjoyable in it than IV.

I'll also add in that I think V is great. I almost got into it as much as I did with Suikoden II, which is my favorite of the series so far. Plus the gameplay is more like Suikoden I and II, which I liked.

Suikoden IV is worth $40. It's an awesome game.

Suikoden 4 was 5% RPG and 95% poor yachting simulation. Still, you'll have to play it if you're a Suikoden fan.

Yeah. I don't remember what button it was that you could hold down to speed up sailing around. It was like R2 or something I think.

I bought Suikoden IV when it first release being a fan on the series and boy was I mad. I really don't suggest it if the sailing was out of the game then I think would have been a better game.

ugh. Sounds weak. I keep reading about the tedious sailing. I think i'm going to pass.

Suikoden 3 and 4 get bashed a lot from people. These games arent great RPGs but they are pretty good. The sailing IS a pain but no more then countless random battles walking on a world map. And the sailing isnt too bad after an hour of playing.

$10 is definitely worth it.

I'd say $10 is worth it. It's the weakest of the Suikoden games, but it's mercifully short. The sailing I had no issue with, what irked me the most was the way the main character ran. If there's one thing I wish game developers would get right, it's making the character not run like a damned goof...

Personally, I thought Suikoden 3 was great. They tried something new, and let's face it, the primary reason to play an RPG is the story, and Suikoden 3 was about telling a story from three different sides. I thought it had really mature story telling (when you're the adults, anyway). Plus, the animated intro made me wish they turned it into an anime series.

I agree, I also found the humor a nice addition. While I did find it occasionally annoying to only have the three groups of 2 instead of 6 people, it was something new and it did work for what it was designed to do.

Agreed. I sunk almost 70 hours into that game, and I don't regret a second.

Suikoden IV was definitely the worst in the series, but I felt it was worth the playthrough. You should be able to get through it in about 25 hours, and for $10, that's a pretty decent trade-off. And yes, knowing how to speed-sail initially would make a huge difference--I didn't figure it out until about 15 hours in.

As most have said, it's a decent RPG, but not a great entry in the Suikoden series. If you haven't played the other games, starting with IV might make you appreciate I, II and V more when you get around to playing them.
