...and buys a XBOX360!
Well, almost. I'm just about ready to buy one and I was wondering if there is anything you guys recommend knowing before I go out and get one.
First thing I will mention is that I plan to get the premium version and a sub to XBOX Live (pretty much my primary reason to purchase). I'm thinking that I just need the card, but the freebies with the bundled one is tempting.
So I'll now be a Wii360 guy (like Vinny!)

i have found the deals on the vision camera bundle are nice...comes with 2 arcade games, the camera and 1 year sub to xbox live...I got it late last fall on amazon for about $50 shipped, which is the same cost as a year sub to xbox live...

I'd probably go with the Elite since you get 100 more gigs for $80 more. Also the Premium has been $400 for 18 months now so I'd feel a little "ripped off" having to pay the same amount as someone who bought it at launch. While with the Elite, you are paying full price but at least you get to enjoy it while it is still fresh.

Funny thing is, I'm not even sure what games I'm going to get just yet. I know I want to get on Live and play those games and then probably something like Madden when it comes on and anything else I can play with my friends. (and CAGs)

Honestly, I almost envy your beautiful innocence right now. It's like watching a little boy stumble into a forrest of candy you've been happily living in for the past two years.
You are going to love your 360.

Get Gears, GH II, Crackdown... and Lost Planet (it's really fun while it lasts).
On XBLA, get Castlevania, Catan, Small Arms (if you have people to play with), and... I can't think of that other one I have... anyone, those should hold you well.

That's good advice right there... buy the system and get one or two games (Gears of War and Dead Rising are my two recommendations). Then just download demos and see which ones you do/do not like and buy accordingly.
It's a great (and expensive) time to own a 360... especially with Forza 2, Mass Effect, BioShock, and Halo 3 all coming soon.
The thing that I'd warn you about (especially if you're a Nintendo fanboy) is that you may have reliability issues with the system. I've never had any issues with a Nintendo system.
Microsoft on the otherhand, isn't know for good solid reliability. Our 360 has been humming along fine until just a few months ago (around it's 11th month) when it wouldn't play certain games for some reason (Crackdown, CoD2, and PD Zero).
My brother had the system at the time. The first time he called MS about the issue, they told him we'd have to pay something like $150 to get it fixed. He told me that and I told him that our their extended warranty should still be in effect (which he had no clue about). He called back and they said ok and he had to send the system.
They told him to keep the HD so that there's no risk of losing all that data on there. A week later, he gets a call saying the system has been fixed and that they had to use a 20GB HD to test somethings which they're also sending to him.
So we got a free 20GB HD out of it... but I'm still kinda iffy about them not telling him about the extended warranty the first time he called. An extended warranty might not be a bad idea.
But honestly, it's nice to have a HD system around for all the pretty graphics and traditional gameplay.

if you like open world type games...saints row was pretty fun..didn't see that mentioned already...i think it went platinum hits or whatever msft calls it, so the msrp on it should be pretty cheap...i just looked on ebgames and it is $29.99....also with the buy 2 get 1 free on used games at eb/gamestop this week...you may want to check that out to get some used games if you are looking to save some cash..I would imagine most of the games listed minus crackdown and gears of war should be fairly easy to pickup at eb/gamestop used...and get the extend warranty from msft...i think they have it priced around $50 for 2 years, where as cc and bestbuy are up over $80 i think
Well, I just did what you are thinking of doing ;). I've had my Elite set up for all of 2 days now. I'm actually playing a lot of Hexic, and just downloading demos like mad. My son loves the Lost Planet demo so I may actually pick that up (when it be cheaper).
Oblivion seems like a mood game where atmosphere counts so, sad to say, I may wait on that until I get a PS3. Why? The sound of the 360 when playing a disc based game is so overpowering I think it will distract from RPG-like games. I'll have to see if I can get used to it. So far I'm sticking mostly to downloadable content so the thing stays quiet .
My boys just started playing Lego Star Wars II - back to a disc again, ugh...
I have about 15 games that I've gotten cheap thanks to CAG too. When I get more time I'll have to delve into one of them. Maybe Burnout Revenge or Chromehounds first...

Hey man. :)
I was in your boat in Feb. I wasn't a hardened Nintendo guy, but it had been a while since I had played anything meaningful on a non-Nintendo system.
I would get the system (Premium, not the Elite. That 100 gigs is not worth $80+tax) and then download demos galore. The two main games that really drove me to the system (Dead Rising and Gears of War) have been my least favorite games I've played on the system. Yet surprises and impulse buysw in Guitar Hero II and Rainbow 6: Vegas have really sucked me in. Play the demos to see if what is out there is what you like.
Overall, I think Nintendo just has stronger game devs for their systems, but the stuff on the 360 that I've gotten into I've really liked. You should probably pick up Geometry Wars on the XBLA. That's easily the game I've played the most of anything on the system, and it's only $5.
Did you have an original Xbox? If not, I'd look into getting Ninja Gaiden Black, Crimson Skies, and the first Halo if any of those interest you.
And, if you've got any specific questions from someone coming from your gaming background, don't hesitate to shoot me a PM or ask things here.
See you on Live!
My suggestion is wait a little longer untill they fix all the bugs in their system, my 6th system just broke this console is the biggest peice of garbage. The games are good though. If you don't listen to my advice I warned you , but of course get Oblivion , Gears Of War and Dead Rising.

I really Recommend:
Condemned
King Kong ( If you haven't played it yet ) ( It's fun and looks great )
Call of Duty 2 ( Single Player )
Call of Duty 3 ( Multiplayer )
Crackdown
Oblivion
Gears of War
Saint's Row
You should be happy with any of those games. Good Luck ZForce.
Also I agree with Shrike and get the 2 yr warrenty also.

Fuck, buy a lifetime warranty on that shit, since you'll need more than 2 years definitely.
Like Bazz said, I'd strongly suggest waiting a few more months until they put the more stable 65nm chips in the systems.... wasn't it by Fall / Winter they were going to make the Elite the new Premium?

If you like Nintendo...guaranteed you'll like Kameo :D
I recommend:
Kameo
Lost Planet
Call of duty 2
CoD 3
R6: Vegas
Viva Pinata
GRAW 1 & 2
Burnout: Revenge (Or just wait till the new one...)
Tomb Raider if you can get it cheap
And....C&C3 is pretty fun too.

I bought it and I'm online. ZForce915 if anyone is interested.
I think I'll be into the demos for awhile, seeing as I don't have anymore money for games now!
Now I need some deals on Marketplace points. Is anyone interested in trading me a XLA game for Robotron 2084?

GET DEAD RISING. Literally the reason I got an Xbox 360. At the time I got a 360, this was the only game I wanted, and the only game I owned for a month or so (till gears and rainbow six came out). And it's only $30-$40 now!

Better yet, wait until the dashboard update in about 10 days. There will be an option to download ALL the arcade demos, so you don't have to do it one-by-one.

Haha! I was in the same position a while ago.
Start whoring out you body for money. Luckily there are tons of cheap games around now that the console is a year and a half old.

*Edit* - didn't notice you bought it until after I wrote this big do's and don'ts post. Oh well. I will leave these parts:
Crackdown is probably the safest "everyone would love it" recommendation. The best "GTA with superheroes" game out there.
If you have an HDTV, get the HD DVD add-on. Don't pay $200 for it, but there are fairly frequent deals on it so you should be able to track something down eventually. Paying $150-ish for a HD DVD player, King Kong, and a remote is a deal and a half.

I hated Crackdown. I found it extremely borring and repetitive. Just plain not fun. I regret playing it, because not only did I not have a good time playing, but I actually disliked my time spent playing.

You don't count.

I hate to sympathize, but I have to. I got bored after two days or so. Multiplayer might be fun, but the campaign mode is nothing more than "kill a bunch of generic bad guys, fight a boss, jump around to level up, repeat". Diversity in missions (even so much as adding a fun story that made me WANT to do the mission) is what sets GTA apart from Crackdown.
If you're looking for a time-waster GTA-like experience, Crackdown ain't it. Saint's Row is.
I just bought Worms on XBLA last night. I've never played a Worms game before - thought it was pretty fun (and I haven't even tried multiplayer yet).

I recently got my 360 too, and just recently did I find out that there were free trials for XBLA games XD. Anyway downloaded around 25 or the ones that were talked about more/that was interested in.
The ones I really liked were Eets Chowdown, Jetpac Refuelled, and Geometry Wars(played it in PGR3 anyway...). Feeding Frenzy and Alien Hominid were alright too! Catan might be alright if you took the time to learn it also. Still want to try worms and a couple others...but some arcade games are just awful like the old street fighter or smash TV, both which I used to like lol. Anyway I definitely recommend Geometry Wars and Eets Chowdown as the best two so far.
It's a bit older, but it's still great - download Cloning Clyde. It's a fun puzzle/strategy game disguised as a platformer. For those that are new to Live, it's almost like Lemmings where you have to get as many clones out as you can by mutating them into new animals and by solving switch/lever based puzzles. Maybe a bit pricey at 800 points, but it's a blast and actually pretty deep with quite a few levels.
I, for one, love Worms. It's got a slightly steep learning curve, and the AI is brutally unforgiving, but it's satisfying once you beat a challenge. Expansion packs for it should give it the depth that it seems to lack as well. I give you advice - master the ninja rope, and once you're swinging like Tarzan, you're golden.

I played Uno on multiplayer last night with daroga, it was a lot of fun. I bought Turtles 1989 arcade and Contra too. But I made the mistake of not trying before I bought Contra. The arcade version is different than the NES version by far.
Maybe I'll see some CAGs around. Thanks for the input guys.

Some tips on following in my footsteps:
1. Challenge every draw 4 in Uno. Lose 15, win 1.
2. Make fun of the one guy's green barfing icon that is not talking via the headset.
3. Encourage someone who just bought a 360 to do step #1; become disappointed when he learns faster than you.
