View Full Version : CONFESSIONAL: What's that (beatable) game that you've just never been able to beat?!

For me, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. I've been playing it (casually) for about 16 years and I still can't knock Iron Mike down.

And now, I don't know if I have the twitch reflex nerves for the job.

I never beat that fricken Tyson either, but I've knocked him down. I think I blink too much to be able to handle it. I need to go back and try again though.

For me it has to be Kirby: Canvas Curse for DS. Every time I play it again to beat it it pisses me off on that damn fire level.

I'm pretty stuck on the 8th level of Zuma adventure mode. I think I need more lives going into it by starting at an earlier level, but I am too lazy.

I've beaten Tyson quite a few times, even played a year or two ago and it didn't take too long before it all came back to me. I have more trouble with Macho Man.

The first Ratchet and Clank game. The difficulty ramps up way too much at the end. I've tried every stinking weapon, I've tried to run right through the enemies, I've tried to take it slow and make every shot count... nothing works. I hate the fact that I've logged ~20 hours into it but I can't add it to my list of completed games. *hangs head in shame*

Just yesterday I got my butt kicked up and down the street by that game. I died 4 or 5 times on one level before I set it down, rather than smash my DS against the wall. Fun game though.

Big thing with Tyson is being able to quick return from a dodge(pushing back the other way from the direction you are dodging). Get that down, and you should be able to at least knock him down.

I did not even know that you could do that until about a year ago. Try it out coltyhuxx

And Kirby:CC is one of the few games I swear at constantly. I will beat it someday, but I can only play it about 15 minutes at a time because it pisses me off so much.

Lunar: Silver Star Story - PSX or wait... PS2? It came in that collectors box.

I've restarted that game twice but it's just too hard!
And I'm supposed to be good at RPGs.

My cousin beat it with ease. I told him to play my file and even he couldn't understand why it seemed much harder on my files.
I was only 20 or so hours into it. Pretty early part of the game.

I never beat Mike Tyson either. I can barely beat Super Machoman.

Nes Jaws is another game I never beat. I can get to that end bit at will, but I could never spear jaws with the front of my ship.

You ready for this one? Here a game Ive never beaten...

Super Mario Bros.

I beat SMB2, SMB3, SMW, Yoshi Island, SM64, etc... I just could never beat the original SMB. My friends make fun of this fact to this day.

Ive sat there and watched my friend do speed runs of the game.

I cant beat it... =(I finally thought of mine. Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA). It's not that it's necessarily too hard, I just really, really don't like that game and just never invested the time to beat it. One of these days I'll probably just sit down and run through it, but even with Super Mario Advance, I just got bored after like 3 levels and turned it off.

For the original, you just gotta keep that firepower through 8-3 and 8-4. If you do that, it's cake. If you don't, it can be rough. Great game though. I've probably beaten it 5 or 6 times since I downloaded it on the VC in January.

Go beat SMB2 quick. Use this route: 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 (Take warp at pipe at the very right of the outside screen) 4-1, 4-2 (warp near the middle of the stage) 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 7-1, 7-2.

Beating it a second time around I can't imagine. I did beat Loki the first time but when that bitch was like "find the real bracelet/charm/whatever" I decided I was going to be single.

For some reason, in the NES version, around level 3 or four (the underground caves) when you fight the dragons on the bridge is just so freaking hard for me. Then the game gets easier for a bit and then it's just ruthless.

Nothing like falling on a torch when you have daggers late in the game.

That is the main one that sticks out in my head. Im sure there were tons of NES games that I couldn't beat. As for the original Mega Man as someone posted earlier. I played Mega Man 2 first and beat that one, then went back to play the original Mega Man. I don't think I even got out of the first level.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2) - I'm pretty close to the riot missions, but every time I play the game, all I feel like doing is driving around. I did take over all the gang territories, though.

True Crime: Streets of LA (Gamecube) - I've completed all the missions to get the two bad endings, and I'm one chapter away from getting the good one.

L.A. Rush (PS2) - I believe I was about 3/4ths through the game before something else took my attention away.

Every Zelda game except A Link To The Past - I kid you not. I came close to beating the first Zelda when I was a kid, when I was borrowing my cousin's copy. Right as I got to the final dungeon, my save file somehow got erased. I tried to play through it again but my cousin wanted the game back. I have it on the Gamecube and GBA and I'm about halfway through the game on both systems. Back when I had Ocarina of Time on the N64, I got all the way to the Spirit Temple, but my file was lost due to a strange glitch - the game froze for some reason and when I reset the N64, my file was in accessible. It was the second file and the cursor would just skip from the first file to the third file. I couldn't even erase it. I tried again on the Gamecube but I haven't been able to regain the motivation to try to get past the Water Temple again.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 (PS2) - I can't beat that damn final McLaren F1 race.

This is mine too. The damn boss is too tough, and it takes too damn long. If you could just pick up the fight at the boss, I'd have beaten it by now. As it is, I just never had the patience to ever try it more than once in a sitting, which hasn't been good enough.

The old-school game for me that falls into this category is Iron Sword. I got all the way to the part with the little floating elemental heads, but I have no more lives/continues left on my password. It blows to get that far and have to start over. I never had the resolve to do it.

Phantasy Star II used to be on this list for me , but I was going to be damned to spend the time to get all the way to the end and not finished. I eventually beat THAT mother brain (and dark force).

That's another big one I still haven't beaten. I'm right at the end but I just can't quite beat that last boss.

There's also a good sized list of RPGs that I'm very close to the end on, but for whatever reason just haven't brought myself to finish. Some notable games on that list include: Xenogears, Xenosaga, Breath of Fire V, Dragon Quest VIII, FFVIII, FFXII, Lunar 2, and Lufia 2. Most of them I could probably go back and easily finish, but I won't remember what the hell is going on and end up starting over, getting to around the same point and start the whole cycle over again...

I remember telling my mom that I "hated her" when she unplugged my NES from (unofficial) standby mode when I was at school. No saves, no passwords=brutal wear on the TV and the NES.

Ooooh yeah, I did that, too! I got up to the second form of the final boss in the game, and he just kicked my ass. I ran out of continues and I lost the will to play that game. Hard as hell, no saves, and it took me 2 days with an overnighter for the NES to finish.

Other games I just haven't completed: Final Fantasy X-2 (lost interest), LoZ: Majora's Mask (lost interest), Viewtiful Joe (lazy), Advance Wars 2 (too much commitment)...and that's about all I can name right now.

I hate to leave games hanging - I forced myself to complete the horrible Wizardry V - Heart of Maelstrom for SNES even though my top team was annihilated in a fire trap in Hell and burnt to ashes (unrevivable) and I had to start over. The game has no conclusion and my motivation to see it conclude made me essentially start over. You would save manually, but the damn game had a feature that would save the game in the event you reset or turned the power off. So if I made a bad move and my whole team died, and I turned the system off, there's a 50% chance I'll turn it back on and have my team dead in the Maze somewhere.

I also never beat Tyson in Punch Out. Another game that I could not beat that comes to mind is Metal Gear Solid. I could get to Metal Gear Rex and get halfway through the battle, but for some reason I could never beat that bastard.

It took me until The Twin Snakes came out for the GC to go through the game again and finally beat it. I think the difficulty on TTS was easier though because I beat Metal Gear on my first try.

For those of you that couldn't beat Blaster Master...my mom beat that game, and I am not kidding you. She was obsessed with it for a long time and would play the hell out of it. We played with an NES Advantage joystick so maybe she was using turbo or something to help her out.

You can add me to the list of "couldn't beat SMB" and "couldn't beat Blaster Master" people. Hell, I probably haven't beaten half of my old NES games ... but I've still got the NES, so I'm going to get through them one of these days.

I've never met anyone who could beat Zombies Ate My Neighbors, after the giant baby and the leatherface monsters you run out of continues

Exactly. I thought this topic was more about games that most people beat that you personally couldn't/didn't.

Anyway, regarding ZAMN, this is pretty much the only game I think of that I not only wanted to use a Game Genie with, but actually was more fun with a Game Genie (I'd say most cheat devices make a game so easy it's not fun, etc).

There is a specific code that allows you to collect extra of each item that you run over (e.g. more than 10 pieces of silverware when you stand on the silverware item). That's all that was needed. No invincibility, no level skip, no easy enemies, no extra lives. Just more ammo and the game is suddenly both incredibly fun and beatable, all 70 (or however many) levels.

Final Fantasy VII, which is possibly my favorite game of all time, but I've never beaten it. I've poured literally 70+ hours into it, and I just can't get through the last part. I've gotten all the way up to Safer Sepiroth, just can't fucking beat it. Damn you FFVII! YOU ARE THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE!

FFVII is my wifes 'cant' beat it' game. She's at Sephiroth, she just cant beat him. I think she missed out on a bunch of shit thoughout the game that probably would have made the end alot easier, but she refuses to start over, so she just gave up. I dont think she had a strat guide when she first started playing, that would have helped.

I also have several RPG's that I didn't finish. Trouble with those game is if you stop playing you forget where you're at and it's almost impossible to get back into it. I never finished FF X-2. I got close to the end but stopped to play that dungeon with 100 floors or whatever it was. I kept getting killed by one of the bosses on the later levels then gave up. I've also never finished Breath of Fire III, FF VIII, The first Lunar game, and Ogre Battle. I also never finished Parasite Eve for the PS1.

EDIT: You can also add Dragon Warrior II & III for the NES to the list. I almost quit on Dragon Quest VIII but I knew if I stopped I would never finish it.

I'm not the moron that can't read thread titles. The title of this thread isn't "Boost your self esteem by gloating about being able to beat every game in existence".

It's just like around Christmas when CAGers would create thread for Wii availability in the hopes of finding one. You'd get those one or two ass clowns that would jump in there with remarks like "You're still trying to get one? I got one on launch day!" "You're just plain lazy if you haven't gotten one by now!"

Police Quest 3 for the PC (trying not to use any walkthroughs), still have not beaten it till this day. I think the furthest I gotten was up to the wife being mugged.

Timesplitters 1 for PS2. I'm playing on the hardest mode. I'm on level 4 now for the past months.

Any of the Final Fantasy series ( I think I'm impatient during cutscenes/animations/etc.) I think I'll just end up watching movies of people playing the game instead. FF7, I got as far as saving Aerith the first time. FF8, I stepped outside of town. FF9, I watched the intro. FFX, I got to the first sighting of SIN. FFX2, watched the intro. Actually, I think I'll go and play FF7.

I also have never beaten SMB. The 8th world just has me too frustrated to continue.

FFTactics is one that I also have never bbeaten, but for more reasonable reasons. I spent 2 years grinding in that game so I could get a certain "SOLDIER" to a respectable level (made him a secondary time mage so he could teleport and use quick charge for his limits), and then one fateful day, my memory cards get stolen.

;-;

I swore profusely, and I came close to tears, even. I mean, why my memory cards? Why not the games? They were closer to the exit to my room than the memory cards were!!

Wow, I am surprised by so many listing SMB. It's just not what I would have expected from most. Honestly, most games I start with the intention of beating, I do eventually beat. I say with the intention, because there are certainly game I start and play for a while and lose interest or don't even like. I couldn't care less about finishing those. I remember the original Ninja Gaiden taking me forever to beat. I am still proud of that victory. I never beat Ninja Gaiden 2 or Zelda 2, though. I think mostly because I never owned them.

I the only games I flat out couldn't beat, not because of losing interest (Metroid Prime, FF8) are the Resident Evil games, with the exception of 4. Those games are fucking impossible, I get anxious every time I use a bullet or health item because I fear I'll never be able to beat the game because I should have saved it for later.

I have friends that feel the same way. The whole game is nerve racking because you fear running out of items. Just thinking about it makes me anxious.

Edit: I should not that I own all the Resident Evil games on various systems to overcome my fears... It hasn't happened yet.

I completed Ninja Gaiden 1-3 on the NES back in the day but for the life of me, cannot get even close to finishing Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox. Its just not happening. The dude riding th ehorse in one of the first levels is the death of me *every single time*.

Then there's the spider boss thingie in Devil May Cry 1...
Fire Emblem 1 on the GBA, the next to last map. I have tried and TRIED but cannot progress beyond that point. Which is strange, because the game came easy for me up until that brutal spot.

Prince of Persia XBox - I have played up until this one point twice then get frustrated and stop. Anytime I go back to it I cant figure out what I was doing before and just give up, yet am too stubborn to start over yet again.

Despite being one of my fav games of all time - Final Fantasy III (SNES) - I have never finished it. Never. I have played through til the end where you have to split your party into pieces to fight off the last of the bosses but cannot advance because of low level characters and find level grinding to be tedious and horrible. But three times I have made ito there and loved the story up until that point.

There was an NES game called Legacy of the Wizard where you switched between different characters. I remember "visiting" the dragon boss alot (you could see him but couldnt reach him) but never finishing the game. Despite renting it many times and enjoying playing it, nothing ever compelled me to figure out how to defeat it.

Blaster Master - could never leave my NES on long enough to get through it.

But I have proudly beat other games that have been the bane of existance for others on this forum it seems like Zelda 2, the Mario games, Wizards and Warriors, etc. So I dont feel too bad.

For some reason alot of games seem HARDER these days. Have I just lost my twitchy reflexes or are they as jacked up in difficulty as they seem? I loved the shooters RType, Gradius V, Panzer Dragoon Orta and Ikaruga but can't complete them whereas back in the day I took down Thunder Force 3, Gaiares, Arrow Flash, Axelay, etc with ease.

Never beat the first SMB though so I will join the others in the hall of shame on that one.

And yes, the second chemical plant thing SUCKED but had some rockin music. I loved the music on that stage (and most of the game really). Sonic 2 just had great music, very underrated where the soundtrack is concerned there.

I never really beat a lot of classic NES games when I was younger. I was way into Ninja Turtles, and had all their games, and those are what I concentrated on.

Sonic 1, I have beat, thanks to the handy-dandy level select code. The rest of the Genesis Sonic games became my bitches.

Mario 2
Mario World
Dragon Warrior
Zelda
Zelda II
Zelda: Link to the Past
Punch Out
Megaman 2
Elite Beat Agents(that last song sucks)

I'm sure there's tons more. I think back on it, and I'm pretty sure when I was young I'd play games a bit but I would leave my brothers to actually beat it and I'd just watch. It was easier and more fun for me that way I guess.

Many NES games. I remember having lots of trouble with Wizards & Warriors, uhm Rush N Attack.

The Zeldas have always giving me trouble. I remember drawing out maps on graph paper for these. I really enjoyed playing them on the NES and liked playing Zelda LOTP on my GBA but could never quite muster up the intelligence or time to finish it.

With the PS2 the GTA's have been ginve me trouble. my gta:vc disc just crapped out and I didnt care enough to get a new one, and I've been playing San Andreas for well over a year now and am probably only 75% (story) done. I imagine it owuld take me a life time to actually get to 100% completion in this game.

I dont know why I keep picking up the Street Fighters, Mortal Kombat's, Def Jam, DBZ Budokai, etc. i'll be able to beat a few characters but there's always one that stops me every time. I'm the same way. I love playing fighting games but I'm not very good at them. That doesn't stop me from collecting them though. Fighting games that kick my ass are of course Street Fighter II and Dead or Alive 4. Everyone knows Street Fighters AI is incredibly difficult. I do fine with DOA but then get demolished by that friggin Alpha boss at the end. I didn't have that much trouble with Dural in Virtua Fighter.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within(Xbox)- got past the part where someone tells me how to unlock the chamber for the final boss. Unlocked one part, after that I just turned it off cause of the cheap deaths(if a enemy ,i.e. a bird, hits you in mid-air, you're fucked).

Mega Man X5 & X6(Ps1)- beat all the regular stages, but kept dying on the spikes for first part of the "final" stage for X6. X5 was due to the first Sigma battle.

I have exactly the same problem including 4...I have replayed parts of RE4 over and over trying to do save more bullets/health. I got frustrated after getting into the castle with a fairly small supply of ammo and restarted.
I haven't beaten the first Pikmin for exactly the same reason. I keep playing a single day over and over until I am satisfied that I have done it as well as possible so that I don't get to the end and run out of days (for the record, the last time I played, I had more days left than parts to get, but I was having trouble getting all three parts that I wanted to get the next day without killing off half of my Pikmin).

I also haven't finished SMB - though I am working on it. I just got through 7 last night. And although I did beat SMW, I never managed to beat the 8th castle - I went around it through the star area to beat bowser.

I have yet to get through a single advance wars, as I have trouble accepting anything less than 100 for my score at the end of the level.

Yeah, that's pretty much why I've never finished it was due to that giant baby.

There's another one that I completely blocked until remembering last night is Final Fantasy IX(PS1). I get to the first form of the last boss and within a minute, completely slaughters my party. I kept going back to leveling them up, but it doesn't help. After about 10 tries and leveling up more each time, I said fuck it and sold the game. I pretty much gave up on RPGs after that. The only RPG I've played after that was Skies of Arcadia Legends.
