View Full Version : Tony Hawk Project 8 and Downhill Jam $9.97 at Costco B&M

Just got back from Costco and they had the Downhill Jam and Project 8 games for $9.97 after a manufacturer's instant rebate. I saw Project 8 for PS3, PS2, Xbox and Downhill Jam for GBA and NDS. I didn't look for Wii and 360 sadly... (too distracted by the pizza waiting for me in the food court).
I picked up the PS3 version for 14.08 after tax (original price gets taxed).
This was in the Livermore, CA costco.
Happy hunting.

How much was the instant rebate?
Aren't Costco deals normally YMMV?

Just picked one up from the San Jose, CA for 360...the price says $53.99 on the box with NO MENTION of any rebate but rings up as $45.97 w/a $36.00 instant coupon...had about 4 more left in stock.

so, basically if its not marked, you just have to walk up the the cash register and it should ring up the manufacturers coupon automatically? I always feel wierd when it rings up normal price and my only explaination is, uhh, the internet said it would be cheaper. Anyway, thanks a lot, this is quite a good deal

They looked for 10-15 minutes and couldn't find any.

questions for everyone who got in on this deal so far 1. Was there a sign indicating the instant rebate? The OP mentioned it so I figure there was a sign at his location, but a few other people say they were mark at regular price, but went through during the ring up process 2. Did the 360/PS3 versions require you to bring up a empty box to the register to acquire the actual copy?

I'm guessing the X360, but it's weird cause the X360 demo plays far better than the actual retail version. The demo actually runs in a pretty constant 60 FPS but the framerate is all over the place in the final version

1. My first Costco didn't have any of them. I went to another Costco and they were all still marked full price, but they were thrown in a bin with a sign showing the rebate.

Did the retail version run at 60fps in the skate park where the demo took place? Or was it already all over the place there?
Perhaps in the demo the rest of the world wasn't in memory hogging the resource.

Does the slow frames really detract from the experience?

Went to 2 Costcos, both had the games marked as $9.97. One had signage above stating the instant rebate. Unfortunately, in AZ you have to pay sales tax on the amount before the coupon which adds a few bucks, but still a good deal. Luckily my parents are in town and I was able to snag a couple games.
If your store doesn't have them marked they should still ring up $10 as this appears to be nation wide.
I got Project 8 for the PS3 because of the controller. I think Gamespot reviews seemed to like the 360 version better, but that may have been due to online play, which doesn't matter to me.
EDIT: It looks like Gamespot gives the edge to the 360 version for the online play and the framerate is more stable on the 360.

Just a heads up, but I work at the Grant Rd. Tucson Costco, and saw someone buying 10 copies of Tony Hawk's Project 8 for PS3 I believe, so if no one can find a copy at that store, you can thank that lurker or member, who will likely put them on ebay.
Congrats to you, hoarder, what a valuble member of our community you are. The sad thing is that I may keep deals I see at our store to myself, just so you don't find out about them.
Went to 2 Costco's - the first had signs up for the "instant rebate" for the PS3, PS2, and DS games. Of course, they didn't have the 2 I wanted - 360 and/or Wii (probably prefer the Wii one, actually). There was not even a sign for those versions, so I'm assuming they didn't have them at all when the rebate started.
Then I hit another Costco I'd never been to before. NO signs up so I thought I'd get lucky. Well, they didn't have any of the next gen versions, just the PS3 and DS games. Meh...
I might try one more tomorrow, but anywhere with signs I don't expect the games to last long through a busy Saturday at Costco.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up OP. I think this may be the first ever great game deal at Costco, if I'm not mistaken. It was nice to finally get something out of that membership besides bulk toilet paper, bottled water, paper towels, diaper wipes, and cheese (which is mostly what we buy there ;)).
By the way, anyone planning on selling these on eBay may be in for a surprise. They don't sell for that much to begin with, and it will only get worse over the next week or two . Anyway, I'm going to assume echostormfury is just joking, but one can never tell with an Internet post...

You know, I can't say with certainty but I'm assuming the PS3 version probably trades in for more than $10. I 'unno but it would be a slight way to save yourself from a complete strikeout of a deal.

At EBGames \ Gamestop, it is something in the area of $27, whereas GameCrazy is giving $33 in credit for it. I bought a copy of the PS3 version for myself to trade in and for my brother yesterday!
Awesome deal.
Edit: Actually, I take that back, I just checked my receipt and it was $35 in credit at GameCrazy, but that was with the membership there upping the amount a few dollars.

Thanks again! There were tons of PS3, DS and Wii versions available, all labled $9.98 on the stickers. I searched and eventually found the cardboard box placeholder for the last 360 version, still labled $46. Tax is still pre-rebate, despite the new price tag. Head up to those in PA. The King of Prussia Costco does NOT have any THP8 for XB360 despite having nearly 20 cardboard boxes out in the games area for them. I was told they were going to pull the rest, but I don't know if they did. I wanted to get 360 and Wii and they had to refund me the price of the 360 version.
Got myself a copy for the Wii and they had about 8 copies left and about 2 copies for the DS. I believe I saw that the deal ends on 5/8/07 based on the signs above the game area.
Our Costco here did NOT charge the tax on the pre-coupon price. Tax was charged on the $9.97 price.

Well I went to two different costcos today
The first one had only the Wii, DS versions in stock, and I picked up the last Wii one. Thanks OP! However I still wanted the PS3 or 360 version and decided to hit up another costco. Well i get to the other costco, and sure enough it looked like they were sold out when I went to the video games section. However I found a Tony Hawk 360 display box mixed in with all their other 360 games. I was excited about getting the last copy, so I quickly bring it up to the register to pay. So since it was a display box we were suppose to pay first then take the display to the merchandise pick up to get the actual game. So when I go to pick the game up there the guy there says "Oh another Tony hawk?" in a shocking voice.
Then he tries to look for it, but then comes back telling me they are sold out, and this display box wasn't suppose to be out there. Then on the floor I see all the Tony Hawk display boxes for Wii, Ps3, 360. The guy tells me some guy came in earlier, and bought like 66 copies combined of all three versions.
This was at the Fullerton, CA Costco btw, I sure hope that person who bought all 66 copies was from FW, and not from CAG because if you are from CAG you don't belong here you greedy son of a bitch.

collectordragon: Yoshifan is right. The truth of the mater is, warehouse clubs like Costco, BJs, etc. *expect* their customers to buy multiples of stuff. Remember, they cater to small businesses. Much of the products they sell are eventually re-sold. Costco even has special "business members only" hours Mon-Fri before the store opens to others. They are more like a distribution center than a retail store. When my family used to own a restaurant, we often bought stuff from warehouse clubs with the sole intent of re-selling it for less than retail, but more than warehouse prices (mostly candy and chips).
It may suck for individual CAGs, but it's business as usual for Costco.

Thanks OP, picked up a 360 version (last one @ Laguna Niguel). They did have some copies for the PS3, but that was this morning. Almost purchased a couple of PS3 THP8, but decided to leave it for other CAG's.
Yeah, I'm guessing this hit FW bit time and there's little likelihood of finding any at this point (except GBA/DS/PS2 versions of course).
I went to another Costco Saturday at 1pm or so with the hope of finding a Wii and/or 360 version. I found one PS3 box and figured I'd pick it up for trading. After waiting 20 minutes in line and buying it the woman comes back out holding the box and says "Yeah, someone bought all of these this morning and we thought we cleared out the boxes but we must have missed one - but I can give you a refund!" :bomb:.
Look, if you're going to fucking let someone buy ALL of them, at least make them take a box up for each fucking copy! What, they just let someone go up with one box and say he wanted them all? Bastards...
Then I went back to the store that had 10+ copies last night when I was there. It was cleaned out as well (but that was late afternoon so it could have been just regular shoppers at that point). Had I known how this would go down I would have bought 4 or 5 last night for distributing to CAG's. Better that than having them get flooded on eBay for $5-$8 profit for some FWer.

The Wii version is AWSOME! I bought it in Feb 07 and I wish I would have bought it on Launch day along with my Wii.
I think it got bad reviews because they thought it was a step backwards in the Tony Hawk series. I think it was a fresh change. It works GREAT!

Notice any ps3 versions there? I don't feel like heading up to Montgomeryville

Sorry if this has already been posted but I just saw that Costco will give you a 10 dollar gift certificate when you get their membership. It's 50 bucks with 10gc, but their memberships come with a full refund if you are unsatisfied with your membership, no questions asked. Get the gc use it, cancel if you think paying 50 bucks for a 10 dollar game isn't making you happy. Or you can join costco for real and get a free video game.
Heres the link to the sheet you need to take to the counter:

questionable ethics? maybe. But if your not happy with the membership you will get the membership fee back, their policy, not mine.
I'm sure some people who were on the fence will keep their membership, and even if half dont, costco still comes out with new members. I was just pointing it out, thats all.

I hope this is allowed: I just made a trade thread for this specific sale, so we can put it all in one place. I think with this many copies flying off the shelves at this price, it's safe to say we'll have many requests to sell and to buy, so why not put it all in a thread. >>Costco Tony Hawks, Assemble! (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2899275#post2899275)<<
I'm apparently an idiot, there is already a thread of this (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136856http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136856).

It seems these games are abundant in some places and not others. I went to 2 Costcos Friday night, right after this hit. One only had the PS3 version (in addition to PS2/DS/GBA). The other only had DS I think. It appeared neither had the 360 or Wii ones to begin with. Both of the stores had pathetic little Wii sections with a couple copies of Zelda/SSX Blur/Super Paper Mario and that was it. Then I went to another Saturday that was sold out but they only had the PS3 one (of the big 3) originally. So it appears there was never a chance around me to even get the 360 and Wii versions to begin with. It is astounding to me that people are still finding these. I'm going to try one more store Monday afternoon, but I'm not expecting much...

I would have thought KOP would be one of the first stores to sell out since that area always seems to be crowded (I won't even go near the mall area in November/December).
Maybe I'll head up there later this week since the version I'm trying to get is the PS2 one and I would think that would be the system that has the least demand.

There's 47 new THP8 for 360 listed for sale now, not nearly as many as I expected to be honest. There aren't that many that have closed at this point either (since this sale started).
But this one is kind of funny. Something is strange here, see if you can figure it out. Either the guy is clueless or a scammer:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Tony-Hawks-Project-8-Xbox-360-Brand-new-factory-sealed_W0QQitemZ170109807830QQihZ007QQcategoryZ620 53QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
In either case he's likely to get some bad feedback or have to issue refunds.
He's also an idiot as a seller because he's got 5 all ending at the same time.
To contrast, there are 93 of the PS3 version up for sale, which is indirect evidence that this one was easier to find.
But if you are looking for one, there's another idiot seller who may have made it easy for you. This guy:
http://cgi.ebay.com/FREE-SHIPPING-Tony-Hawks-Project-8-Playstation-3-NEW_W0QQitemZ220110246337QQihZ012QQcategoryZ62053Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
has 18 of them all at $14.99 with free shipping all ending around noon tomorrow (along with 7 Downhill Jam for Wii). While it is possible all of those will get bid up to $20-$30 (as others seem to be ending at currently) there a good chance for a steal or two here, especially considering the free shipping. I may try to snipe one of his Downhill Jams myself ;).
(And just for the sake of 100% completion, since I tend to be that way with my games ;), there are 58 new copies of Wii Downhill Jam for sale).

MFing scalpers. I bought two of downhill jams a couple days ago to do a trade in at GC as it seems like downhill is pretty abundant all across the board. While I was there I asked for the trade-in value of the ps3's as I saw that we had 15 of them when I was there a half hour before getting my paycheck. After hearing that they got $31 not to mention the 10% from the card, I was going to go back and pick up a couple, only around 4 so I'd leave some for any enterprising people.
I go back to costco and I see that there are no boxes at all. I go check the computer and it says that there are still 15 in stock but it was updated 20 minutes previous so I was hoping that the fucking scalper was walking around the building with all the boxes in the cart. I write out a pick-up slip for 4 of them to try to circumvent the guy and I pay and I go to the cage to pick it up. They only find three of them and when they ask a fellow supervisor, she says how some guy bought 12 of them and they were holding those 3 for him for later.
I hate scalpers.

sonderiaom, I wish Downhill Jam for Wii was "abundant all across the board". Here in the Portland area it didn't appear the Costco's had any to begin with. Or if they did they all got sold first thing Friday. PS3 versions appear to have been wiped out by early Saturday (based on signage I found and display boxes with no games to match ).
If you can check stock and let me know if any here have Downhill Jam I'd appreciate it (maybe Salem or Albany - I've been to 4 of the 6 Portland-area ones).

Two more great reasons to buy with confidence at Best Buy.
If you are about to make a purchase and discover a lower advertised price offered by a local retail competitor on the same available brand and model, let us know and we'll match that price on the spot.
Already bought? We'll refund you the price difference, plus an additional 10% of that difference up to 30 days after your purchase (14 days on select categories*).
Either way, simply bring in proof of price while that lower price is in effect.
Exclusions apply. See details below. Policy may also vary between stores. See store for complete details.
Exclusions:
The Best Buy Price Guarantee does not apply to our or our competitors' free offers, limited-quantity items, open-box items, clearance items, mail-in incentives, financing or bundle offers. The policy does not apply to typographical errors or a competitor's price that results from a price match.

The Costco in Bridgewater NJ had a bunch of boxes for the PS3 version. You pay for the box and then take the box to Merchandise pick-up - so assuming there is one game for each empty box, this store has about 10 copies of the PS3 version. I did NOT see any other version (and I looked around for them). It costs $13.26 after tax.

Err it is $50 actually for the cheapest one.
And there is a way to buy things there without being a member but you have to know a member somehow. That member has to buy a cash card, then you have to go to the membership desk and get a "look pass" but tell them you want to buy with the cash card and Viola, you don't have to buy the membership but can still buy something there.

Didn't see it pointed out anywhere but in case some CAG's wanted to get in on this deal there's a way to do it without paying the $45 or so for the Costco membership - but there's a little work involved.
Costco a full refund policy on membership fees if you cancel before it runs out. All you need to do is join and pay for a membership, get the games and in a few days to a week go back and cancel (just say the prices aren't really that good or any excuse really) for a refund. Technically, you could be a hard core CAG and wait 364 days to cancel or even 10 minutes after buying the games but I'd give them a week or so myself so corporate doesn't eventually change this policy because a abuse.

The Roseville, CA Costco didn't have any of the Wii, 360, or original Xbox versions but I did pick up the last few copies they had for the PS3, GBA, and DS. They are now totally out of the Tony Hawk games except for the PS2 version.
If anyone would want to trade their Wii or 360 versions for a PS3, GBA, or DS version send me a PM.
What is it with all the non-Costco members? I thought everyone was a member. Hell, I've been a member since the 80's... Back then you actually had to be a federal or state employee or part of a union or something to join. Do they just let anybody join now? Sounds like it - guess things have changed ;). I was a grader when I was a junior/senior at Cal, so I used that as my 'in' back then (worked for the state, basically). This was back when it was Price Club by the way - I've only recently gotten used to calling it Costco.
I just recently upgraded to the Executive membership. I'm not really sure it was worth it but I know I get at least the difference between the regular and that back as a rebate after each year, so it doesn't really cost me anything. And I save quite a bit getting gas at Costco. The difference between that and regular stations is probably enough to pay for my regular membership.
Being an Executive member seems to get you squat besides the rebate though. They promised me all this crap ("exclusive coupons" mostly) and I haven't gotten anything I wouldn't normally get. Oh well... It sure didn't help with this deal ;).

Price Club didn't change its name to Costco. Price Club and Costco used to be two separate companies.
Here's a brief history of both from Wikipedia:
Founded by James Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman, Costco opened its first warehouse in Seattle, Washington on September 15, 1983. Sinegal began by working for Sol Price at both FedMart and Price Club. Brotman, an attorney from an old Seattle retailing family, was also involved in retailing from an early age.
Costco’s business model was similar to that of Price Club, which was founded by Sol Price in 1976 in San Diego, California. Both companies charged a membership fee and catered primarily to small-business owners.
The two retailers were similar in size when they merged in 1993; thus, the combined company, PriceCostco, was effectively double the size of each of its parents. At that time, PriceCostco had 206 locations generating $16 billion in annual sales.
PriceCostco was initially led by executives from both companies, but then Sol and his son Robert Price founded Price Enterprises and left in 1994. The company changed the name to Costco Wholesale in 1997.

... useless info deleted...
The company changed the name to Costco Wholesale in 1997.[/i]
Uh, "The company changed the name to Costco Wholesale". And thus what I said stands. I used to go to a place called Price Club. It merged with this other company and eventually changed it's name to Costco. As I said before, I only recently got used to calling it Costco (was still calling it Price Club for several years after the merger and name change, which came later). I never implied they up and changed their name out of the blue and was quite aware of the merger - point is the name changed, however that came to pass. No need for the history lesson .
Anyways, can't believe people are *still* finding these things. My local Costcos were wiped clean of next-gen versions within hours of this hitting the net...
Costco in Burlington, VT were all still regular price for all systems.
Did they ring up this way at the register, or are they just tagged that way? If it's just the latter consider yourself lucky and get your ass back down there and buy 'em. You might as well buy 'em all too, because doesn't the instant rebate end tomorrow? At this point, I'd say that's fair game. i don't care if you sell them to CAG's, trade them in, whatever - I hate to see a nice sale like that go to waste  (as they will go back to regular price soon otherwise). Anyway, you are lucky because at my Costco's they were prominently tagged as being on sale and thus didn't last long.

I think it's because some of these costco's aren't putting up signage for the instant rebate. I was able to find a few 360 versions for myself + friends at the San Francisco costco, where they didn't put up signs at all.

Confirmed that it's going through today. This morning I just picked up two 360 versions for my nephews for $25.46 total. The Buford, GA location had just a few of the 360 versions left but had easily 20+ of the display boxes for the PS3 plus numerous of the GBA, PS2, and Xbox.

I got the Wii through a poster here (before the trade thread was created), but since the cost of Paypal fee/shipping I was hoping to group a PS3/360 together. I'd much rather the 360, but it appears to be the one no one can snag.

I posted the numbers that were up on ebay a few days after the sale started and I thought there were a lot then.
Now there are 122 (new) PS3 ones up for sale, 64 360 ones, and 69 Downhill Jams for Wii. This is about double what was for sale when I looked before.
Looks like some good deals might be possible on the PS3 versions, in any case ;). Once again, this is indirect proof that the PS3 version was more readily available than the 360 or Wii at Costco, which is what I observed first hand as well (though none of them were easily had here).
Thanks OP! Got mine today!

In PA, the law is you pay tax on the after coupon amount since it is treated like a manufacturer's coupon. That's how some people got it for $10.xx with tax
