The jist:

In a case that could set a global legal precedent for granting basic rights to apes, animal rights advocates are seeking to get the 26-year-old male chimpanzee legally declared a "person."

Hiasl's supporters argue he needs that status to become a legal entity that can receive donations and get a guardian to look out for his interests.

"Our main argument is that Hiasl is a person and has basic legal rights," said Eberhart Theuer, a lawyer leading the challenge on behalf of the Association Against Animal Factories, a Vienna animal rights group.

My guess is, they wanna declare this beast a "person", so that its handlers can legally have sex with it

I got $10 that says a chimp can make better posts than yours.

Good thing we have you around for intelligent and constructive conversation then, right?

I got $10 that says a chimp can make better posts than yours.Seems to me that, every post of yours that I see, is you telling someone not to post, or talking about how shitty such and such's post is. Man, you're just the smartest fucking guy on this entire forum, and your posts are just dripping with insight and deep thoughts. Posts such as:

"Yeah, they're pretty awesome, aren't they?"

"Wow, that post sucked."

""

"wow, that was kinda lame"

You're the CAG equivalent of those kids from "Dude, Where's My Car?"

Hey. maybe you can add another person to the Ignore List you love to talk about so much. Shouldn't be long before that list is filled with every CAG user, since obviously, nobody here is even in your league. Of course, I'll never Ignore you, since it's users like you who make me truly thankful that I didn't turn out a pompous retard.

It should be the other way around, I could think of several humans that could be considered chimps.

I can think of many who have the mental capacity of chimps...like most of the people on the road, for example.

"We mean the right to life, the right to not be tortured, the right to freedom under certain conditions," Theuer said.

"We're not talking about the right to vote here."

Wait a minute; I know they're in Austria and their understanding of 'rights' may be different from the US's: but if the chimp is defined as "person", he should have *all* the rights that come with it. Not this halfsy, "just the rights that are convenient so no one has to manage a foundation for him."

"Under Austrian law, only a person can receive personal donations." Sounds like they need to change *that* law.

America should have given chimps the right to vote during 2004.

when chimps start paying taxes toward healthcare and education and everything else that's wrong with this country, we can start calling them human beings.

This is a little too close to bizzaro-world, even for animal activists...

Bush didn't win in 2000, but lucked out anyway.
The almost equally shitty quality of John Kerry led him his second victory.
But his approval rating is very low... very interested to see if he ran again (say if he was only done with his first term) to see what the voting situation would be like then.

first chimps, then gorillas, and then what, orangutans, this is the first step to the apes taking over

Rights cannot be given, they must be earned. And I'm not giving monkeys rights until they start wearing pants. I'm sick of looking at their shiny, red asses.

Rights cannot be given, they must be earned.

Rights (at least the fundamental ones) are neither given nor earned; they are inherent (although not for chimps).

You are, of course, right, but I'll be dead and buried before I accept any non-pants wearing moneys in my town, much less in our voting booths! Their hatred of pants flaunts their atheistic anti-Americanism in the face of traditional, god fearing Americans.

Hear hear! Down with the commie/fascist/jihadist/non-pants-wearing monkeys!
