Most PS1 games released after the PS1 was pretty much dead was bargain bin shit... I don't think PS1 had anything in its last year that can compare to God of War 2, Persona 2, or Manhunt 2.

The PS2 is still getting actual big name developed games in addition to the bargain bin stuff, especially so late into its life.

Hell, even Sony is still supporting the PS2! Hot Shots Tennis is a huge surprise.

I completely forgot about Taito Legends 2... I'm definitely picking that one up right away next week. Anyway, it really does seem that the PS2 has a superior release schedule this spring/summer even compared to all the next gen systems combined.

Yeah I'm kindof surprised that it's still running fairly strong. I'm excited for 4 games on that list that I'll pick up at release. Two others I'll be picking up later at cheaper prices. Man these last 8 months have really drained me of my money. When will the releases slow so I can recoup or am I forced to work overtime? :P

I'm not surprised. Developers will stop making games for it after it stops selling. And Ps2 units still sell pretty damn well for being nearly 7 years old. I know I'm glad I still have one, and it will get plenty of use this summer with Dawn of Mana, Odin Sphere, and NCAA Football 08. Oh, and Shining Force EXA, if the bastards who have it rented out at GameRang ever decide to return it.

Sony wants to shoot for 10 years now with their consoles. I'm sure with PS3 not doing quite as well as they wanted (and still slow on software), they really need PS2 to fill in the gap. It's still their bread and butter, anyways.

I have Odin Sphere and Tomb Raider Anniversary on pre-order--those should be good.

I also have a bunch of import pre-orders in the pipe as well.

There is also Soul Nomad & the World Eaters from NISA and Wild Arms 5. This is like several years in a role that PS2 has a strong RPG year. Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles 2 is also getting a release this year. If publishers want there are many decent japanese games that hasnt gotten a US release (tales of destiny remake, front mission 5, Super Robot Taisen Origins PS2, new Guilty Gear, Yakuza 2, Growlanser 4-6, Shinsengumi Gunrou-den (so far Japan and Europe only)) D3 could also start releasing some of their budget games that only have europe and japan release.

So let's see... if I can sell my $5 MvC2 for $90, then that means I can get Odin Sphere and Persona 3 for $5. I like it. And I think that's it for future releases for me. Kinda nice getting a console at the end of its lifetime. :D

Shots Tennis is a huge surprise.
I don't see why. Every Hot Shots Golf since 3 has been a Greatest Hit, so it's not like the Hot Shots games are some obscure, niche series or anything. And since brand names sell, I don't think it's exactly a big gamble for Sony to release it in the US. It's already been localized for Europe, so the translation is already done. All they have to do is box up a 60hz version of that for us NTSC people, and they're guaranteed to sell at least half a million of 'em. Again, not much risk, there.

Yea, I didn't list Wild Arms 5 because it has no definite US release date on Gamestop... I also didn't list Art of Fighting Collection and Fatal Fury Battle Archives 1 because there is no release date.

I think I've heard rumors that Guilty Gear Accent Core is coming here.

I actually did totally forgot Wild Arms 5... I'm going to keep updating the list as soon as new games come out, so people know what they can head down to EB / GS to preorder, because while some of these might appear at the bigger retailers, most probably won't.

And to CoffeeEdge, I'm not surprised Hot Shots Tennis is coming out here, I'm more surprised Sony themselves still want to throw support at the PS2, in an age when console makers abandon their system months before their new console even hits (Microsoft), or take the games and force them onto their next gen system (Nintendo).

I know PS2 has sold a lot but it's nice of Sony to see that and throw us an awesome game, rather than drop support hoping people will abandon PS2 and start moving to the PS3. I guess they decided they might as well get in on the fun too

Well, I think PS2 is running strong, but far from what it was last year IMO. I'm just not compelled as much to buy many PS2 games (mostly because I have 200+ PS2 games and already feel overwhelmed by it).

I personally felt the Q1 for PS2 wasn't all that great (especially compared to last year), since I only cared about Ar Tonelico (which I bought), Rogue Galaxy (which I bought), God of War 2, and Shining Force EXA.

Q2 though, I feel is excellent IMO, with a decent number of games I want.

Q3 looks pretty good, although not as strong as Q2.

Not really sure about Q4, but I think it will be 40% as good as last year in the same time frame, but that's still pretty good.

The majority of games I want this year are coming to PSP though (especially in the summer). PS2, PS3 (especially in later summer and Holiday season), and 360 (especially summer) are about even in games I want.

Hell, even Sony is still supporting the PS2! Hot Shots Tennis is a huge surprise.Hot Shots Tennis came out almost a year ago in Japan, before PS3 was released. SCEA just tends to be slow bringing some games over unfortunately.

Accent Core was supposed to come out here on the Wii of all things and I think the PS2's just getting Slash. Which makes absolutely no sense. Oh well, not like it's stopping me from just importing AC anyway.

Don't know if you'd want to edit the first post with this:

Wild ARMs 5 has been announced for a Q3 release by XSEED Games.

Soul Nomad & the World Eaters is one title and is currently slated for an August release by NISA.

Also, Chacrana is correct. KH2: Final Mix was in EGM's 2007 PS2 preview (Feb. Issue?). It was mentioned with Wild ARMs 5 and the Guitar Hero 80's Expansion.

Uh, I still don't think it's that Sony is doing anything unexpected or particularly graceful here. The PS2 is still vastly outselling the PS3, so of course they aren't going to stop making games for it. It's that simple.

I've been filling in the holes for my game library for all my "old" consoles. Occasionally I get the urge to pick up a 360 or PS3, but slap myself around and remember I have like 50 sealed games waiting to be played. Add to that all those the great games still coming out for the PS2, I'm set for a loooooooong ass time. Well, until MGS4 comes out. (Please get delayed.)

Dawn of Mana is a ripoff because apparently it sucks, and SE thinks they can get away with charging $50 for it.

It would take a lot more than a soundtrack to get me to drop money on that turd, especially since Atelier Iris 3 and Odin Sphere (all hitting around the same time) are far more deserving of your money.

Is Atelier Iris 3 even supposed to be any good? IIRC, Atelier Iris 1 and 2 both had the subtitle "MEDIOCRE FEST 2001."

Odin Sphere looks ridiculously good though. And I know we're not counting imports, but friggin' Kizuna Encounter is out in June, which is awesome.

It'll probably be mediocre but I just can't get enough of the "Barrel!" that the entire Atelier series sports. Maybe it's the Star Ocean 2 in me with Ashton going nuts over them.

I wish they'd bring a more worthwhile game from the Atelier series over instead of the Iris games. Though I think this is the last Iris if I remember correctly... So maybe future ones.

.

Judging from the little blurb I read on Gamestop.com, it sounds better than the other two. It's got job classes, no more random encounters, guild system... eh, I'll just cut and paste

# Quest system that allows the players to decide which quest to play
# No more random encounter. You can battle enemies on the field
# Customizable job classes
# What you find on the field can be used to create items and weapons
# More craftable combinations
# You can even make your own custom weapons
# Guild based quest system for 40+ hours of game play
# Monsters hit the gem for more challenging and exciting battles

If anything, it's only $10 cheaper than Dawn of Mana, comes with an artbook, and will probably be loads better. I'm always a sucker for job classes and guild stuff. Who knows wtf that last bullet point is.

Here's some more info I dug up on AI 3, from IGN:

Different from Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana 2, Grand Fantasm is a quest-based RPG where you travel back and forth between your home town base and five separate worlds. You're free to accept quests of your liking from the Mystruse Guild. Simple quests take just a few minutes to complete while more complex quests can last for over thirty minutes. Clear the quest and you earn money and quest points, the latter being used to increase your guild ranking.

All your favorite gameplay systems from Eternal Mana 2 are back. Grand Fantasm makes use of a battle system called "Active Cost Card Battle," where cards on the top of the screen display what moves will appear next. Iris handles the alchemy side of things in Grand Fantasm. This time, alchemy has nothing to do with the powers of Mana; instead, Iris relies exclusively on items to make new equipment and tools.

New to the game is the Blaze Master System. Players can befriend different Manas in each world, earning the ability to fight as a Blaze Master, a warrior that uses weapons associated with the Mana. Each Blaze Master has a different appearance and uses different weapons, and each can build up its own set of skills.

Nippon Ichi handled the stateside version of the first Atelier Iris game and is currently at work on localizing the second one. With some new gameplay systems and the typical Atelier artwork in tow, Grand Fantasm could make its way over as well.

The active card cost battle kind of reminds me of the battle system of FFX, where you could see the turns before it happened (which is what I hope this ends up being), and the guild stuff reminds me a lot of Legend of Mana.

But the main reason (as none of us have played it) all of us are looking forward to Odin's Sphere is because of the great 2D graphics.

Since I've played Princess Crown though, I can assure everyone that it should play as good as it looks.

Though the soundtrack by itself is $20 as well. So it's not really a deal per say but easier to deal with shipping wise if the NIS store charges increased shipping cost with multiple items.

That said, the opening isn't too bad. I normally don't care for music but the way it begins and ends is rather nice I think.

Never played any Atelier, but 3 sounds awful nice. I'm enjoying .hack GU with all the extra stuff you can do, like the Book of 1000.

I'll be on the lookout for AE3, but I'm waiting till Dawn of Mana drops. After Children, I just can't blindly buy another Mana game, especially since Dawn is a crapfest.

Now, if only God Of War 3 were coming out on PS2 instead of PS3. Then, that list would be phenomenal. Of course, I'm waiting till GOW 2 hits GH to bite, as I rarely buy any $50 games anymore.

I still wish Takara would bring over the G1 Transformers game, which I've seen videos of on YouTube, even though the fighting in it reminded me more of an old kung fu movie and not the original Transformers series.

That is the ONE game I would probably pay $50ish for right now if it were brought over.

I hope to Christ Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire are good. Atelier Iris 3 sadly looks like crap, and I loved the first two games. Persona 3 should be good, the only question is if it will be impossibly difficult like the first two games in the series; if so, I'm skipping it. Wild Arms 5 can't possibly be as bad as Wild Arms 4, but I'm still proceeding cautiously.

And of course, I'm avoiding Dawn of Mana like the plague.

I'm leaving licensed stuff off the list for now since well, everyone expected the Simpsons game to be on PS2 ;) If I added all the licensed stuff this list would double or maybe even triple... We are sorry, but unlike the original Japanese soundtrack, the American soundtrack will NOT include the opening song, "schwarzwei~The World Beyond the Mist~". Customers who have already pre-ordered the soundtrack from us will be notified individually by RosenQueen customer support.

Interesting. I'm now more content with my cduniverse preorder for $30 rather than picking up the game w/ artbook & soundtrack for almost twice that amount.

Tempted to get Odin Sphere, but I already have two games preordered this month. Still, I hope it's good enough that it convinces me to pick it up anyway, along with The Red Star.

I'm leaning more and more towards getting Odin Sphere. I just think this one will be difficult to find in the long run (or even mid term) ala Tales of the Abyss (and perhaps more so). Will it even be carried by the big stores or is it only going to be found in Gamecrazy/Gamestop kinds of places?

AI3 is tempting ONLY because I got the other 2 - but I only got those because they were cheap and I have yet to play them. So I'm more likely to wait on that. If I never get it, it's probably no big deal because who knows if I'll ever play the first ones, so having it would just be for the sake of having a complete set - and it's definitely not worth spending full price to get it in that case . Not very CAGey that's for sure...

I'm considering getting FFXII: International that was just announced for August (import). They're saying it's supposed to have English voice-overs, so now I just want to hear if the menus, etc. are all English like FFX: International was.

On-topic, I have several of those pre-ordered so far (Odin Sphere, Grim Grimoire & Persona 3). I'm also slightly tempted by AI3, but to complete my collection as well since I haven't played the first 2 either. So I'll probably wait. ;) Definitely looking forward to others on the list, such as Hot Shots Tennis, Guitar Hero 80's & Wild Arms 5.

Here's another one for the rumor section. A month or two ago, I came across this listing on cduniverse.com for Growlanser V:

http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7117394&style=games&BAB=M

The same day I stumbled across this, I also found a listing for Grim Grimoire, which at the time hadn't been announced anywhere else. So it's possible they know something no one else does, or at least that no one else is saying.

Finally, I've got my fingers crossed for a Steambot Chronicles 2 US announcement. I really enjoyed the first one. :)

Well, I actually came across the import version the other day at yesasia.com (Well Yesasias ebay account then checked yesasia.com) for $35 shipped for the original edition. It's possible they're trying to get rid of it since there may be a US release out but at that price I couldn't help but bite. I checked elsewhere when I saw the price but they were the only one with it significantly below $60.

Finally, I've got my fingers crossed for a Steambot Chronicles 2 US announcement. I really enjoyed the first one. :)

I hope the controls are a little less awkward if there ends up being a second.

i'm super stoked on tomb raider anniversary. the $29.99 msrp is a pleasant surprise, too. i've been holding on to 30 dollars worth of target gift cards specifically for that game, thinking it was coming out at 40.

I usually don't post on this board, but I have to say that my PS2 hasn't gotten much love lately (due to the Wii and 360), but I just recently picked up God of War (I'm a cheapass, and a patient one at that) and have to say that the PS2 is hands down one of the best consoles ever IMO.

I've heard of people's systems dying, or needing to be replaced, but I've had my system since LAUNCH (well, maybe a few months after launch since I got it for Christmas in '00) and it's still going strong. I originally thought that Sony was on crack for saying the PS3 had a 10 year plan ... but considering the PS2 is closing in on 7 years I can seriously say that I would believe that.

I've always pushed the PS2 as the system to get for those looking to have a console at home (and don't have "next gen" needs), and it's a hell of a bang for the buck. I wonder if Sony plans on dropping the price to $99 this year.

Roufuss, you forgot this one:

While it is licensed, in a sense, I think it is PS2-only, so probably belongs on the list. This will either be hilarious fun or VERY VERY bad, so I'm curious ;).

Growlanser V has had a preorder listing at Amazon for well over 6 months (I remember seeing it late last year. Its almost if someone at Amazon does their homework.

I got mine AT LAUNCH and it only recently started having problems, such as trouble reading blue CD games and sometimes having trouble with any disc period... got a new slim one before it completely died though.

Not for me, besides the Wii... the PS2 is getting the most play. The DS has kind of gone neglected lately, but I typically switch off from console gaming to portable gaming every few weeks.

That'll probably soon change once I get my own 360 in the coming weeks.

Hmm.....does anyone know if .hack Vol. 2 has any kind of special edition at Gamestop like the first volume? Definitely getting this game.

I was pretty much sold on getting Persona 3 since I have Persona 2. (Not that I've even opened it yet or anything) But after seeing that the Fes content won't be included, I think I'll hold off until if/when it's released here.

Other than that, AI:3, Naruto UN:2, and Soul Nomad for me as well. :D

I really don't think it makes sense to wait endlessly for something that may or may not come out over here... why not just pick up Persona 3 now so it won'tbe a pain in the ass to track down in the future?

No special edition. Which kind of sucks since if you missed out on the special edition of the first one then you didn't get the bonus disc that includes a lot of info on the story. It even has stuff that's locked until you have save data from future games.
