Although I know it's not going to happen, I'd like them (Microsoft) to unlock 1680x1050 resolution when using the VGA cable. It should be physically able to, as they already have a 16:10 option, and higher resolution options.

Anyways, here's hoping!

Same. Amen.

I don't use MSN nor would I have the time to type a message unless I have that keyboard add-on, which I'm not willing to pay for because if I really needed to talk to someone over MSN I could just take 4 steps to the left to the computer. It's cool, just not for me.

Now here are my questions since I really never paid much attention to this update LOL
So basically our gamertags are our MSN names too? So I can chat with someone who's on live with that keyboard attachment thing (which should be out soon I guess)?
I def want that keyboard, especially when playing and you get a message. It'd be so much easier & faster to respond to.

I don't really understand this "low power download"?? Someone explain that to me. Now I understand "low power downloads" will use "less power" LOL but I never knew it was using a lot of power?

it downloads while you're away and will shut down once it's done downloading. Basically, you don't have to be around to download crap and leave everything on all day.

I'm sure with the clout and marketshare behind them, Microsoft could persuade some folks into making the regions work in larger marketshares. I am tired of region-coding doing nothing more than forcing the balkanization of worldwide markets... Microsoft abdicates the control of region coding to the game publishers... thereby giving control of how a game is distributed to the publisher... which might help a bit, unless game companies are hell-bent on region coding as the MPAA is. (at least sony say "no region coding for games" and Nintendo _almost_ said that... before retracting it and forcing old-school region coding back onto a console that doesn't even play movies...)

The new HD video formats are taking a different tack on the region coding... which might be a good thing... (at least for now... I'm sure they'll find a way to screw us in the end...)

Honestly, though... other than enforcing existing region-codes on DVDs, what does it profit Microsoft to sniff out people who have accounts in different regions? (I guess the movie content...... that's simple though... check the DVD region and not let them get any movies from a region they're not in, if MS is afraid of the MPAA...)

...and just for the record... the providers don't care... as long as we keep buying their shiny-new things... :)

IGN screwed up. That's the update from June 6, 2006 as seen here:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2006/0605-springrelease-features.htm

Here is the Spring 2007 list:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2007/0408-im.htm

Beginning the week of May 7, users of Windows Live Messenger on Xbox 360 can text chat using the virtual keyboard accessible on Xbox 360, or by connecting a USB keyboard to the console. This summer Microsoft will launch a QWERTY text-input device, a new accessory that will connect directly into the Xbox 360 controller to support text and instant messaging.

Other New Features
Beyond Windows Live Messenger, the Spring Update for Xbox 360 includes hundreds of new features and enhancements including:

* A richer Achievement notification pop-up will showcase the name of the unlocked Achievement and the gamerscore value without needing to leave the game to check the Achievements list.

* Enhanced family settings features for Xbox LIVE communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.

* A new Xbox LIVE Marketplace blade lets Xbox LIVE members access the content they seek—whether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States)—from one place on Xbox LIVE.

* Updates to Xbox LIVE Arcade allow owners to quickly see which Xbox LIVE Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox LIVE members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and Achievements directly with all friends on their friends list. Expanded "Tell a Friend" capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.

* Expanded "Tell a Friend" capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.

* A new option in Auto Downloads provides faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox LIVE Arcade games.

* New progressive download controls provide easy access to optimal viewing options by letting people fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

* Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.

The Spring Update is free beginning the week of May 7 and will be easily accessible to every Xbox 360 owner through Xbox LIVE or on Xbox.com.

You may not even notice all the new features, but they are all designed to enhance your Xbox LIVE experience. Some of the other features in this upgrade include:

* The name of game in tray is now displayed in the dashboard.

* When the user is in the dashboard and an Xbox 360 game is in the console then the name of the game is displayed in the tray icon of the dashboard. If the user highlights the tray icon then achievements and gamer score are displayed for that game based on the signed in user. Xbox1 games show the name and image of the game.

* Integrated support for the new Xbox 360 text input device. Note that this device includes a new wired headset.

* Playback progress bar indicates download completion.

* Switchable aspect ratio now available during video playback (Auto to Letterbox, Zoom, Stretch, Native).

* Player and friends lists now quickly show session presence information for quick identification of users that are joinable.

* Added H.264 video support: Up to 10 Mbps peak, Baseline, Main, and High profiles with 2 channel AAC LC.
* Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 5 Mbps peak, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC.

* Show folder hierarchy for video content played from all devices.

* Bookmarks are stored for each video that the user plays remembering the users last location in the file as well as the aspect ratio that the user choose for that file.

* Video trick modes (fast forward, rewind, chapter skip) can now be used while downloading Video Marketplace content.

* Skip forward and backward functionality has been improved to skip to the next or previous chapter. Each video is divided into 10 “chapters” allowing you to quickly skip around video content.

* The information bar that is turned on via the On Screen Display (OSD) now shows you exactly where you are in the playback of the video file. In addition it will also show for Video Marketplace content how much of the file has been downloaded and where the “chapters” exist in the file.

* Windows Media protected content (WM-DRM) can now be streamed from the PC to the console. If the WM-DRM license is missing or corrupted then a specific error message is displayed to the user. Bookmarking is also stored for protected content.

* When a user selects an item for download from Marketplace then the system will determine if there is sufficient disk space for the item and, if not, will ask the user to delete content on the HDD. The system provides a sorted by size list of videos, game trailers, demos and arcade content to aid the user in the deletion process. The same list of items are also available from within memory so that users can quickly see which items are consuming the most disk space.

* The console will block the user who attempts to download content onto a storage device that will never have the capacity to store the item without deducting any points associated with the content item.

* The screensaver is disabled when playing photos from any source

Ok, we’re getting closer. I just learned that the May ‘07 dashboard release is set to be released just a few hours from now. ive noticed quite a few small things that are cooler than the bigger things.
like showing the game thats in the disc tray before you start it, and that it shows your recent achievments and score for that game when you go to the tray icon at the bottom. it will make more sense when you check it out.

and you have to enable the low power downloads in your settings its by the auto off setting, but it works well too.

Low power downloads is REAL NICE. The on button flashes periodically in a non-irritating way. The fans on my system are still going full blast though.

Also I'm connected via vga and do notice a difference. Do you guys that are connected via component or hdmi have a setting for "reference"? I'm sure this has to do with the vga cable. I set mine to expanded. I'll wait for the AVS forums guys to decipher the best settings.

I also like the new marketplace blade. Now that I see it, it makes sense. All in all, I'm pretty happy with this update.

The main menu seems the same to me, but the Marketplace is definately faster, and when you load any "all games" list and you're scrolling down through them and it has to load more, that part now takes about half a second. The blade loads a hair faster.

I don't like how the Marketplace blade is on the far left and I want to change that. I like the XBox Live main menu screen being on the far left. I don't understand why the Marketplace blade isn't to the right of the live menu blade.. argh

Anyone know how to change the Windows Live ID associated with your GamerTag?

EDIT: No, there isn't. Yet.

From Major Nelson:

Q: The email address assigned to my Xbox LIVE account is different to the email address I use on my PC for Windows LIVE messenger. Is there a way for me to still access my messenger account?
A: Not at this time. We are working on the ability to allow users to change the email address they originally used when signing up for Xbox Live. The feature will be available in an upcoming release.

So do these new VGA setting fix games that aren't maxizimed for VGA?

For example, Burnout Revenge and GH2 don't fill the entire screen when using VGA, but they do using component. Hopefully they do now so I can stop using component for games and VGA for movies.

The new VGA settings (to the extent of my knowledge) are for color reproduction only, so I'm guessing that will still be an issue. I am using a computer monitor, so I am hoping that they add support for 1680x1050 in the next update.

Once you sign into Live Messenger on your 360, can you sign out? If so, then how?

Also, once you sign in the first time and save your password, does it automatically sign you in everytime you turn on your console?

Most pointless update so far. Not a single new feature I'm truly excited about. All I really want at this point is a party/clan/matchmaking type system. MS needs to stop dicking around with BS crap like incorporating messager or arranging movies and remember that a few of us still like to play games and would like them to focus on improving that side of it. I've never minded this other crap when they were still making gaming improvements at the same time, but it seems like that's slipping pretty far down their list of priorities. So instead, all I get it a few anxious minutes of wondering whether this will be the time my system dies before I can play on line again...

You have to be kidding - the video features alone are awesome. You can now play H.264 and MPEG-4 HD content, either from disc, hard drive or streamed from your PC. It supports 1080p H.264 and MP4 content, which makes your Xbox 360 a better media player than an Apple TV. Engadget posted their tests here (http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/09/xbox-360-spring-2007-dashboard-update-hands-on/). In addition, you can stream DRM video content from your PC. Which means now you can subscribe to services like Movielink or Cinema Now and watch on your TV, not just your PC.

I forgot about the VGA settings - I was thinking they wouldn't be worth much since I've calibrated my TV's black and brightness levels per Avia Home Theater, but the enhanced screenshots look really great (see link above).

the update is pretty weak. Given how long there is in between each one, there ought to have been a lot more fixes by now.
For one thing, it still seems to choke on the guide button if you press it at certain times (like when your friends list is loading or during certain games.)
I'm sick of the dash freezing just because I press the guide button as soon as I sign in.

I wish they would go the PS3 route and do several small firmware updates, some with new content, others just fixing bugs.

That's great. How does it make the gaming experience better? I'm not trying to be a dick about it, but I'm not using my 360 that way. I stream audio for music - which does enhance my gaming experience when I can use my soundtrack. But the bottom line is everyone bought the 360 for gaming. I like the options there, I just feel like they're getting so focused on adding the extras and selling us more crap that they've made very few advancements for the benefit of gamers.

And no, I don't feel entitled, but the reality is they need to stay ahead of Sony and Nintendo - most importantly on the games side of things. I'd just like to see something that really gets me excited about new functionality in gaming. They haven't done that in a while.

Don't just make assumptions because you read somewhere its only modded systems, its not. Do you even have a modded system? Do you know what a modded 360 system really means? The only way MS could detect it is if they decided to check if the games were burned or retail...something that can't do as far as we all know. If they can, there is always updates to correct this and I doubt MS would go around bricking consoles for playing backups of games they are legally allowed to own.

Now, its possible all these people have modded consoles and are just not saying anything...but I doubt it. My Hitachi drive update just fine and I just played a bit of Lost Planet.

It would be good if it wasn't so damn proprietary. I think it would have to be, since its MS-- But if it actually worked like Trillian or Adium or any other multipurpose IM client then I would use it quite a bit. The fact of the matter is however, that I don't use MSN at all-- the rest of the online world may, but most of us here in the US use AIM.

I don't believe avi is supported (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10505222&&#post10505222).

that's weird... an AVI file I have plays now though... I'll have to check if it is actually AVI.

mov??? How the heck did the get that license from apple?

Probably because the the codec that HD .mov files use is h.264 which is just a version of Mpeg 4, which is essentially open source. Apple doesn't own it, they just use it. It's also used in Divx/Xvid/Mp4's which are just wrappers of the same codec.

I believe it may be because AVI is just a wrapper, not a codec. So it may still be possible to play certain avi's through xbox, but not if they use the h.264 codec (divx/xvid)

How does this background download work?

I want to download Forza 2 demo before I go to work, so do I download it, turn my 360 off, and it will still be downloading in low power mode? Or do I download it, leave my 360 sit for a while, and it will turn off when the demo is done downloading?

I'm confused, if you couldn't tell.

Actually, that works after you enable the low power download option in your consoles settings. You have to do that first. I did this earlier before I left for work.

why is this an issue with everyone?..i dont see a big deal in it, it just makes my games list look fuller :)

re:removing games from the played list.

I'd love this. Maj. Nelson talked about it a few weeks back. Is it not in this update?

There are a few reasons I can think of.
1. clutter - tons of Arcade demo titles cluttering up your profile.
2. games you didn't like or just didn't get very far in.
3. it actually wipes the points you did earn from your profile. So you can completely reset a title and play through it again for points.

Yeah, I could go for this too. I have a few games that I either rented or bought used that I didn't care for and took them back so they show in my profile even though I don't have them anymore. I'd like to keep my profile up-to-date with those games that I do have in case someone is looking to hook up.

So then what would a dashboard update do to make games better? The games are games, you buy them and play them, and the experience is generally the sam. These dashboard updates are just gravy on top of that.

Divx/XviD doesn't use H.264. And according to Microsoft, AVI isn't a supported file extension for any video codec, H.264 or MPEG-4.

Here's the video FAQ:

http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/05/09/spring-07-video-playback-faq.aspx

And my excitement was a little premature - H.264/MP4 only support two-channel audio. That means, HD video with Pro Logic sound. :(

The new marketplace blade reveals some funny things about descriptions that Publishers have put in games. In the new section below the game's title and the game description, some incomplete or unfinished areas remain.

For Example:
Dead or Alive 4 is described as a "Incredible Fighting Game" with the description "mighty magnificent stimulating graceful fighting!"

FEAR's description says "Just buy this game and have fun."

Far Cry says "Sell Description?"

Lego Star Wars- "Buy LEGO Star Wars 2" Very to the point.

Ridge Racer 6 couldn't be buggered with any kind of description and both of its sections just have the number 1.

A lot of other ones just say "sell text"

I noticed it while checking for new crackdown downloads, just thought it was interesting.

Matchmaking/party system a la Halo 2 that could be joined and run from the dash would be my #1 request.

Clan support

Multi-person voice chat

Bigger friends list

Those are quick things off the top of my head that I think of. There are a few little things in this update that I do appreciate. I like the name of the game that's in my tray, the indication of what friends I can join in on-line play, improved picture through VGA, and the new XBLA menu that lets you know what friends are playing arcade games are all improvements that I would say enhance the game experience. They're ver minor, but nice changes. I'd just really like to see something bigger.

OK, I admit - the only thing I REALLY want at this point is a party or clan system so I can play with my friends against other groups and be matched against a different group each game. Until they do that, I'll be a little bitter they're focusing so much resource power trying to get my to buy a Zune of use MS Messenger...

One of the great things about LIVE and the unified community is that we work hard to create a level playing field for all gamers and have a no tolerance policy towards inappropriate behavior like hacking or cheating. As part of our commitment to our members, we do not allow people that we have detected to have modified their console to connect to LIVE. This is an important part of our efforts to try and maintain a fair gaming environment for the large majority of gamers that play by the rules. This topic is more important than ever given the recent release of the Halo 3 beta. As a result, some consumers that try to login to LIVE who we detect have illegally modified their console will get an error code (Status Code: Z: 8015 - 190D) when trying to connect to the service. These users will not have their account automatically banned from LIVE, but they will no longer be able to access the service from the console they modified.

We have stated in the past that customers can only enjoy access to the Xbox LIVE community through the use of a genuine, unmodified, Xbox console and we will continue to enforce this rule to ensure the integrity of our service, the protection of our partners and the benefits of our users.

and no gizmogc, it's not microsoft's fault. from one guy who mods systems to another (thankfully I didn't get my 360 done yet)-- if you get caught, it's your fault. if you walked in to a store, stole something, and got caught, you wouldn't get angry with the manager for wanting to bust shoplifters. it's the same principle.

It's also up to a seller to tell you if a used console is banned from live. if they don't, it's because they're an ass and deserve a chargeback if they rip you off. and stores shouldn't take them if the warranty seal is busted.

I'll blame the people who rolled the dice, lost and then decided that others are at fault/should get the punishment for their actions.

If someone overclocks their PC and it burst into flames, Newegg/Intel are not responsible. They knew overclocking could hurt their system and they did it anyways. You knew modding could get you thrown off XBL and you did it anyways.

There's some awesome stuff you can do with the XBX, running emulators and media-server stuff. It makes an amazing media center now that Microsoft isn't worried about stopping hackers and everything has been exploited on it.

As for cheating online, and pirating games: do it and burn in hell. I'm all for modding consoles, some cool stuff can be had by it, and I'd do it if I had the dough and the time (I do tons of hacking with old handhelds and computers and stuff) but I don't want fucking cheaters on XBL, and I don't want pirates to make my industry go the way of the music biz.

If you go on live with a modded console, you are a fucking idiot. If you're going to do it you need to do it right. You can't get your cake and eat it too, microsoft makes sure of this. They know they don't have much control over what goes on offline, but alot over what goes on online.

Oh, and MS did what they had to do. Buy the games, support the industry. If you don't want to do that, than atleast don't be an idiot and try to go online with a modded box. 1st grade math.

Microsoft finally got around to nailing people one and a half years after the console came out, I don't think that can be called making sure of something. Personally I think banning consoles is a dumb idea and think that banning live accounts would be better. Hardware still costs them money and live accounts don't. Just keep updating every few months and nailing all the people with banned consoles. People not being able to keep up with their achievement points and friends list would probably be driven so far up the wall that they would end up getting a legit box after having had their live account banned several times.

And I don't really see many people who had their Xbox's modded selling them. Most will probably just run out and nab a core and hook the hard drive into that (thats what my friend did).

Hardware is costing who money?

Yeah, I don't see that. I don't see moders really caring too much about live accounts.

OK, just stark raving curious here, but how the hell can MS tell that the consoles are modded via the connection to Live? Are they running code on it (installed with the last update perhaps) that detects the chips or changes somehow? I guess that's the only thing that makes sense. I just find it interesting that no one mentions that. I'm sure MS considers it a state secret, but there really can't be that many ways it would work.

I would have neither the inclination, the temptation, nor the skills to do anything about it and have zero interest in a modded console in the first place, but these things fascinate me ;).

Try looking this over, it may help.

Thanks for the link. I'm passing the network test with flying colors. I went through my router settings and they seem to be okay.

I'm going to try swapping out my cable modem which isn't specifically listed anywhere as being supported, and if that doesn't work, I guess I'll look into a new router.

Or maybe I'll just cut my losses and bail out of 360-land after I work through the handful of games that I have. I've had the console for five months and have already had to put up with an unacceptable amount of crap.

I just wanna play games and have laid down a big amount of cash to get in the door, and what do I get? One bricked console, being scared into spending an additional $60 for a warranty, a failed wifi adventure, overpriced XBL DLC, dodgy wireless play, and system updates that shut me down and make me jump through hoops even though I'm doing everything legal.

Who would want to make it this much of a pain to play games? Way to be, MS. Way to frickin' be. Last MS product I ever buy.

I, and many others, have not had any of the problems you list. If you can't understand that maybe you just have bad luck, since so many of us don't have these problems, then I hope you sell your 360 for a good price, because I know many that will buy it.

Apologizing for corporations and their buffoonery is good times!! All the posters in the coffin support thread are boobs who probably broke their own systems. You know who else kicks ass? Bank of America. Those guys are sweet. And TJ Maxx is a good company, too. My account didn't get stolen; if yours did, maybe you just have bad luck. Exxon-Mobile is also doing fine work. $3.20 a gallon is still cheaper than milk!

Anyway, I spent about another hour on the phone with customer support and finally got through to a supervisor who was actually very helpful. He doubted that it's anything to do with my cable modem or router. He said the 800070003 status code is an "emergent problem" and that he's had 8 calls referred to him just this morning with the same problem, each one with different set ups, and that it's almost certainly due to something that flipped on the spring update. My case (and the others) have been passed on to the troubleshooters. Hopefully will have a fix in 3-5 days.

I'm still  at the people who think people with modded 360's can cheat on Xbox Live. Its simply NOT true. All they can do is play burned games...THATS it.

Incorrect.

It was possible to modify the cfg file in Gears Of War.

And a simple required update through GOW fixed it. Now what? Any other games? Anything? Nope.

The point is that cheating is possible and I'm glad Microsoft just took the issue out at the knees.

And look, you'e already found ways to get away with not even paying a dime for another 360 game.

Yeah, at the cost of another 360. Thats something to be proud of. I wonder how much money in CAG priced games he has lost just to have his two 360's. $400+ just to be able to pirate isn't really worth it.

Personally I think they DO make more profit off of microtransactions (EVERYTHING, XBLA games, themes, pictures, TV shows, movies..) then they do off of a retail game.

Buying a Core is only $300, which is the price of 5 news games. I'm sure he has more than payed for that by now.

Well, who's fault was that? If he bought games he wouldn't have had this happen to him. Just saying. It's not nice, but that's just how it is.

What sucks is that it hurts possible respectful consumers. The ones who buy em off of ebay or buy used 360s. It's terrible.

To change the subject I really hope that in the next dashboard update that when you avoid a player that you never see them again. I am tired of running into this one racist douchebag in gears who always talks shit because one of the people I play with is black. He always ends up quitting early because the black guy destroys him (he is number 11 in execution all time). Microsoft won't do anything about it either even though he says racist stuff, has a racist name, and a racist motto. I don't understand why they expect us to pay 50 dollars a year if we can't avoid the douchebags.

Wait...I thought when you 'avoid' a player...you really do avoid them forever? If not...whats the point? Just less of a chance of playing with them?

In pure-matchmaking games where you do "quick find" and it sticks you in a game, it will not put you into someones room if they are avoided. I know this works in splinter cell DA but never tried it in others.

Lobby games are different, but it would be nice if say 50% had the person avoided it would boot them from a room.
