Twice in the last two days my girlfriend has been literally shocked while using a wired 360 controller, once during EDF and again today while playing lumines. She compared it to touching an electric fence(lived on a farm most of her life, so she knows) and I heard and saw the spark, from the right side of the controller. Nothing terrible, just enough to shock you and make you tingly, I guess. The speakers made a crackling sound as well.

I've never had this happen, but I usually use the wireless controller. The first time it was with an official MS controller, wired, second time was with a wired 3rd party controller. (likes the 3rd party D-Pad better for lumines, official sticks for EDF) Anyone have any idea why this is? I have a VGA monitor/computer speakers setup with subwoofer and such.

Sue. Imagine if the controller starts a fire in the middle of the night.

Well I guess depending on how you handle the controller their could be a static shock, but being someone who is prone to getting shocked all the time I have never had it happen with my 360.

USB carries 5V at 500mA. If you're getting shocked like an electric fence, something is very wrong.

Maybe she has an "electric" personality. ;-)

I would take it back, or call M$. This could lead to a recall, and calling M$ might net you some freebies. But it seems like something is wrong with your console, or wall outlet.

:) Nice, yeah I get shocks from my wireless controller occasionally but I think I'm just prone to static shocks. Sometimes I get them from the eject button as well, which makes me slightly concerned that I might damage my 360.

I used to get zapped from my regular Xbox controllers, but that was all from the static I built up on me from our stupid dorm couch than the controller itself.

I'd give MS a call and see if maybe they'll replace it for you, though.

My apartment is good at letting you store up static electricity. Once I went t to turn on the 360 with the button on the unit and I got shocked when I was about an inch away. A big blue arc of good shockness. It hurt too. I will guess that that is possible with a wired controller too, it's not the controller, it's your g/f's static.

the controller isnt shocking her..she's shocking the controller....it wont hurt anything...thats what the ground prong on electrical sockets are for......it made the speakers do what they did because the shock went through the usb cable shielding and finally to the negative point on the speakers...

The controller sensed that her hands recently held a Wiimote. The static discharge is a new feature by Microsoft to promote the 360's dominance.

You should put a metallic bar nearby to touch before touching anything electronical.

One of my buddies gets shocked everytime he presses the button that opens the disk tray- but it only happens to him. It's really weird.

This happens to me all the time at my friend's house. Wired or wireless, I'll get shocked if I accidentally touch the microphone port.

It's her. She's definitely prone to static buildup. If it hasn't been said before, something metal can be touched to release the excess static buildup before she touches the controller.

Silly gf. Everyone knows she should touch your pole first then touch the controller. (To discharge the "static electricity".) Touching is good.

Actually I killed a Playstation controller that way once, It all depends on where the static goes. All the controllers I've ever opened never had shielding only the wire from the system to the controller is.

thanks for the responses, the constructive ones anyway.. She does build up static pretty easily, I've lost count of how many times she's given me a little zap.
