I have We Love Katamari for PS2, and I like it so I'm wondering if I should bother picking up the original Katamari Damacy game as well. Are the two games extremely similar, or would I be missing out if I did not get the original?

Yeah, they're pretty much the same but its worth it. If your local video game rental store has it, then just rent it. I beat it in a few hours, no more than 7. Ifs really fun to play over and over again , though.

I think overall the second game is slightly better with co-op and more varied levels and missions, but I'd say if you liked one, there's no reason to avoid the other.

Also props for Sexy Commando!

I'd say its def worth picking up, but it seems the price has gone up. Ive recently seen used copies at EB/GS marked at $24.95. The games new price was only $20!

I know this is a minority opinion, but I have always preferred the original over the sequel. Despite the ability to unlock 'eternal time' in the sequel, many 'missions' in We Love Katamari feel more contrived and limited, whereas the first one IMO better captures the sheer joy of rolling up as much stuff as possible.

There is more detail and 'scope' and imagination to the second title, but the gameplay doesn't take advantage of it nearly as much as I hoped it would. WLK gets so specific with the goals that the levels are more of a chore than a joy to play through.

The first game's music is also better, IMO.

That said, they're both fantastic games and worth owning.

Theres no point in getting the first one if you already have the second. Unless you are one of those people who collect them for no real reason at all.

If you want more of the same gameplay, pick it up. It's well worth it in my opinion.

I also thought the first game was a little better, but probably just because the sequel was basically more of the same. The music alone is worth the price of admission.

I would. The music is better, though the gameplay isn't as varied.

One of the nice thing about owning both games is that they each have completely different levels and environments and items. Consider the sequel an extensive 'add on pack' to the original.

One thing that might annoy you is that the original only has 3 different environments to roll in, though this is mitigated somewhat by the fact that each one has mulitple facets depending on how small/large you are. Still, you should definitely get $20 worth of entertainment out of it.

as others have said, the soundtrack for the original is fantastic. in terms of mechanics, the only real difference is that things fall off the ball easier in the first. i was used to it since i played the original first, but going back from the second may be a bit frustrating.

I never really played the second one but the first oen's music is great, it is the only sound track to a game my wife actually enjoys/gets stuck in her head and makes her laugh, all i have to do is start singing 'na, nananana na na nanananana" and I can make her smile.

definately pick it up

There aren't as many environments in the first game, but the first game takes better ADVANTAGE of the environment it has. Games seem to last a LOT longer in the first game - you really have to work at building up your size.

In the second game it's much easier/faster to go from tiny sphere to massive katamari. It just doesn't feel as "epic", though there's much more to see in terms of interesting landmarks.

Get both.

The music is better in the first game, too, but there are a few nice tracks in WLK. Just avoid Kuru Kuru Rock if you hate experiemental noise rock. :-)
