View Full Version : PS3 Backwards Compatibility?
I have heard it is will have it...but I have heard that it will only be for PS2 and also that it will be both for PS1 and 2. Does anyone have any current news on that issue?

No official story so far as I know yet. Unless there's an early competitor around this time (ala Dreamcast) they might not feel the need for it, which would very disappointing.

The PS3 was already confirmed to be backward compatible for PS2 software awhile back.

I think it would all depend on the cell architecture, how far along they are with it, and how compatable it is with the old architecture.
That is what I thought...but what about the PS1? I don't have a PS1 or PS2 but if the PS3 does both I may wait the few more years for that.

Or, you could just go buy a used PS1 for around $20.
I mean, it's not like there's a dearth of them or anything.

The PS2 compatibility is guaranteed, it's the PS1 that's unsure, at least last time I read an update

True...but since it is still avaliable brand new...I would want it that way...so it would cost more. I will probaly just end up buying the PS2 once it gets cheaper or the PS3 if it does both 1 and 2.

Last I heard, Sony claimed it will be backwards compatible with PS1 and 2, but Sony always exagerates so we'll just have to see.

Im sure that we will see both PS2 and PS1 backwards compatibility. It should be powerful enough to emulate the systems.

The PS3 is not supposed to come out until 2006. Sony wants to concentrate on the new PSP next year to help it across different markets.
They might have strong competition, Xbox has toyed with the idea of having its next system out by next Christmas, to get a 1 year head start on the next generation, much like the PS2 had on this gen.
PS3 has not been confirmed to be backwards compatible, but more than likely wont be. Sony will more than likely chose to use UMD to help fight people from copying thier games. Sony innovates on the digital media front, and I wouldnt even be surprised if they came up with even another storage device for PS3.
Clarifying and summing up, nothing is in stone on Backwards Compatability.
