Update 7/10: Sonic and Golden Axe rumored to be the games of tomorrow:
We've got a double whammy of Xbox Live Arcade news today. First of all, the achievements (http://news.mygamercard.net/2007/07/10/chaos-cockatrices-deliver-sonic-and-golden-axe-achievements/) for both Sonic the Hedgehog (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/tag/SonictheHedgehog/) and Golden Axe (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/tag/GoldenAxe/) have been uncovered. This has in turn spurred the rumor (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=31768) that Microsoft will unveil Golden Axe as tomorrow's XBLA release. Some are comparing this to last year's surprise release of DOOM during X06. Golden Axe is definitely a classic title, but we were hoping for something a little more exciting, like, say, Marathon. (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/tag/Marathon/) At any rate, we at least have confirmation of one more Sega classic on XBLA. Take that for what it's worth.

Unfortunately there's no ETA, but the fact that they started a "Vintage Collection" means that we might get more than just Sonic.

I thought the same thing! lol
For 400 points a piece id drop the points for any of these though. I think i see columns in our future :-p
This is a good sign for sure though, especially since M$ has been stepping their game up and releasing more than one title on some weeks.
Edit:
Does this game include "enhanced graphics"? I think so. If you look at the screen shots some say smoothing on and some say smoothing off. The ones with smoothing on look better than the other screen shots.

I dunno chacrana, i think the $5 cost would justify some purchases.
$8 for a sega game port on the Wii. $5 for a port with leaderboards, achievements, enhanced graphics, and online play(for multiplayer games).
If they get some games like Streets of Rage on there, then ill be very very excited.
Chacrana
05-09-2007, 01:47 PM
Eh, I suppose it would depend on whether or not you care about leaderboards... personally, I don't think that or graphical filters are all that appealing and definitely not enough to make me buy one of these when there's already multiple Sega compilations which have extras that are arguably more interesting than leaderboards.

Yeah, I think some are worth an individual purchase....thus you can pick and choose what you want. Although, I see what you are saying...for $20 you get them all.
Although, maybe some people only want two games, so $10 would be ok. I recently played the EA Replay collection, and I only like a few games.

I hope by Vintage Collection they mean an actual collection of X amount of games rather than it just meaning a special "line" of games (like Greatest Hits, Player's Choice, Classic NES Series). For example, on GBA we had the Classic NES Series which wasn't a series of games on one cartridge, every classic game was simply a part of a special "line" of games.

Panzer Dragoon Saga: Dammit, I don't care if there some sort of contractual issue, this is a game that never got a full releas in the US. This is a game scraming for a rerelease. I imported this game (called Panzer Dragoon Azel in Japan), and tried getting through it. It was ruined just having to guess what everything was (try healing yourself when you have no idea what any of the items say). Name any reasonable price, I'll pay for this.

Ecco and Sonic Show up on ESRB:
May 15, 2007 - The latest list of games which have been submitted for rating to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) includes both Ecco the Dolphin and Sonic the Hedgehog for the Xbox 360. This gives credence to recent evidence (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/787/787038p1.html) that SEGA is planning to release classic games from its catalog on the 360 as part of a "SEGA Vintage Collection," starting with Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic was on display running on the 360 at E3 last year, but has since dropped off the radar.

No, it was in the original. I forgot about it too until I played through the Sega Genesis Collection with a friend. If you try it you'll probably remember it immediately.
Considering that Sonic 1 & 2 and Vectorman have been rereleased or hidden in a Sega collection about every two weeks for the past three years, it's kinda hard to get uppity over these ... Streets of Rage would justly have everyone pissing themselves. Games like Shining in the Darkness, Third World War, and Dark Wizard would be unreal, and releasing Eternal Champions: The Final Chapter would have me buy a 360 just for it - though I'd be tempted by Challenge from the Dark Side. The 16-bit era had great hits, but it was the mildly overlooked titles that made it so memorable.

I'm sorry, but man did you miss out on one awesome aspect of the game!!
Everyone in my family played Sonic 2 vs.! It was fun. You compete in four levels, split screen race to the end, scoring points for item boxes, rings total, rings you end with, and who finishes first - scoring one point for each category you win. So if the other person blazes past the finish before you do, use every last second of your time trying to get more item boxes and rings.
IF THIS EVEN EXISTS - I'll get it if it has live multiplayer.:bouncy:
I would kill for the vintage collection, but like I said before some elements of it don't seem right. Perhaps we'll just get a game or two every once in a while, nickel & dime us...

Suddenly the Genesis offerings on the VC look even MORE like a huge ripoff. Congrats to Microsoft for accomplishing the impossible.
I'll pick and choose a few titles, probably the Sonic games and SoR games. Castle of Illusion and Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin would be nice, but I don't know if they'd be able to do that because of the Disney/Marvel licenses.
*EDIT* - Also, remastered-for-high-def versions of Thunder Force III & IV would make me shit my pants...into oblivion. I know they aren't for Sega by Sega, but the fact that Technosoft no longer exists may make it possible....

Honestly, I would easily pay 800 M$ points for both NiGHTS, all they would have to do is add Achievements and I'm sold. Same with Sonic. HELL, they could re-release every Sonic game and I would snatch them all up if they featured achievements.

Why? Golden Axe on a Sony system has online play?
You must be speaking of the Genesis collection, right?
I have all these games several times over but wil rebuy for online play and achievements.

I wouldn't say crap per se....I enjoyed Golden Axe back in the day, but I think Sonic is the most overrated franchise in videogame history....game absolutely stinks.

Bomberman Live will be the next big XBLA hit, but I expect them to announce it at least 2 days in advance, not the night before it's released.

Buying anything outside of Nintendo-based and Turbografx (since I doubt MS would bother) games for the VC isn't worth the risk, to me.
Sonic doesn't suck. It's no Super Mario 3 but it has held up reasonably well. Golden Axe is a decent side-scroller but I'd prefer SoR/2/3. I'm sure we'll see them down the road, so no complaints.
Will probably grab Sonic if I ever get my 360 back.

I'm sure I'm not the only one, but barring the original games on XBLA, I don't think ANY of the classic games on Wii or XBLA are worth the money. I think the amount of money they get for simple port jobs is ludicris. If they were $2-3 I might bite, but games like golden axe and sonic have been released in countless collections that are probably cheaper than purchasing the games on these services. Aside from that, consider the vast amount of games available through emulation, but I won't talk about that here since people can be rather touchy.

I'm a Sony owner, AND I have both Sonic Mega Collection+, as well as Sega Genesis Collection and I still ended up getting both. As someone else said, Online play & Achievements easy make it worth $5 a piece. Now if they were exact ports like the VC releases (that are $8, no less), I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

Ehh...couldn't disagree more, not all classic games are worth it, but some are way worth the price, some are actually enhanced with better graphics, some have online play, and most have achievements that are worth getting.
Emulation is fun too, but I really don't mind paying $5 for a game here and there...

Bought Golden Axe last night - short but fun.
I'll throw in my two cents: I like having classic arcade games on XBLA because then I don't have to hook up any systems to play them. Nerd points help, but I'm just too lazy, so paying $5 is okay so I can continue my laziness.
Plus, online play is fun, and it's fun with a friend. Come on people, it's just $5. Don't buy it if you don't want it. No biggie.

I downloaded both demos. They're okay, but as I got that whole Genesis game for the PSP (containing these two and like 40 other titles) for $5 at Best Buy, this seems a little pricey for me. Streets of Rage 2 -- Wander the angry streets and defend yourself from generic thugs using whatever means necessary. Pleasingly, the means usually comes in the form of a large pipe.
Ecco the Dolphin -- Explore the oceans and rescue your fishy friends in this completely enchanting and non-sinister game. Oh, and remember to go up for air occasionally... or you'll die an agonizing death.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 -- The world's fastest and most relevant hedgehog heads off on one of his best adventures with Tails "Miles" Prower in tow. We still giggle about the "miles per hour" bit.link (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/sega-announces-vintage-game-collection-for-xbox-live-arcade/)

Golden Axe is terrific. The arcade version has slightly better graphics and dead characters don't disappear from the screen. The optional blurring filter is a cool touch for those who dislike pixels on HD displays. Finally, online play is just too cool! This is the only exact port of the arcade version ever released to a console, to my knowledge.

As much as I love my dear Nintendo, MS is really showing them how to do classic title releases. Can you imagine if all the VC titles had these bonus features? If Contra included both the arcade and home versions, both with online play? I think Nintendo really missed a grand opportunity. Of course, people still buy the games, so I doubt they care.

Dude, it's Sega. It has put Altered Beast on nearly every console it has the chance to.
I bought Golden Axe, and am pretty happy with it. It's extremely short since it's the arcade version, and it might be the easiest XBLA game to gain achievements on. I played through the game and beat it the first time and picked up like six achievements, giving me about 95 gamerpoints.
But because Golden Axe is such a simple game, it's difficult to put any real interesting achievements in there. So we're stuck with "Play a co-op game" or "Use lvl 3 magic with dwarf"style achievements.

The audio in Sonic sounds like crap and the controls seem kind of glitchy, or maybe that's how it's supposed to be.

Ugh, they can keep Golden Axe 3. I played it on my PSP a couple days ago and it was pretty much ass. The arcade version of Golden Axe II would be glorious, there's never been a home port and the game kicks all kinds of ass.
I've gotten very close to beating GA without continuing as the dwarf but I can't get close with the humans. Am I correct in assuming that the Dwarf is the most powerful guy? I realize his magic isn't as strong but his axe has good range.
I bought Sonic and have been playing the shit out of it, I only have the beating the game in under 40 min achievement left. Can't wait for Sonic 2.

I just beat Golden Axe without continuing (although with 5 lives and 5 energy bars). Getting to Death Adder as the guy is harder than as the dwarf but holding onto that blue dragon makes burning through Death Adder's minions about a million times easier. It's not like the Genesis version where his skeletons are invincible, you can get the fight down to where it's just you vs. Death Adder. At that point I had only died once but then I got overconfident and he took me down a couple times. I think tomorrow I'll work on the woman more.

Oh yeah, it was "Golden Axe - The Revenge of Death Adder". Such an awesome brawler. no, you get them whenever you got to a special stage. You basically have to go to the special stage and win 6 times to get them all. If you missed act 1-2, you can still get the 2nd one in act 2-1
