Question about Persona 3 - Without spoiling anything are there any returning characters from the previous Persona games?
fatbeer

The main characters of Persona 3 are different from previous series. I'm not sure will they have small appearance such as npc(non playable character) or in secret dungeons. If it was Tales series, all previous characters are generally found in the Colosseum.

What's the verdict on FFI for the PSP? Worth it if you own the other versions?
fatbeer
07-04-2007, 03:43 PM
It seem like it's a little bit better then the other version according reviewers. In my opinion I rather go for gba version. It cheaper with manufactured suggest retail price of $20, it contains both final fantasy 1 & 2 , have most of extra features, and no load time.
according to wikipedia
The PSP version has higher resolution 2D graphics, the FMV sequences from the Origins release and the bonus dungeons from the Dawn of Souls release. It also contains an all new dungeon, as well as an Amano Art Gallery. The gallery uses the PSP's naturally high resolution to display high quality art by Yoshitaka Amano, with new pieces of art being unlocked as you progress through the game. The new dungeon, titled Labyrinth of Time (時の迷宮, Toki no Meikyū?), is a dungeon with a time limit, in which the player's HP constantly decreases as time passes. The player is able to exchange abilities such as White Magic usage and the Dash command in order to extend to the time limit, allowing them to delve deeper into the dungeon

I don't care much for remake. I have a hard time playing the same game second time around. It doesn't bring the same experience the first time playing it. Right now, having a tough time staying awake with final fantasy 6 for gba.

I just finished Final Fantasy III for the DS, and had a really good time with it. The whole job system was something new to me and it turned out to be a totally welcome breath of fresh air. My only gripes with the game are: (1) the fact you cannot save in dungeons, and (2) the fact that the final boss was so much stronger than anything faced up till that point. I had to level my party for atleast 2 hours before taking on the final boss. Aside from that, FFIII is the best FF I've played...
... I've only played I & II on the GBA Dawn of Souls
Not sure what I'm going to try next... I could push on and play FFIV, but I've been itching to try out .Dot Hack.

I'm gonna start playing Phantasy Star Universe in a few days. It's my first MMORPG. Can anyone give me any tips on farming for EXP, gaining easy Mesta, anything?I cancelled my Hunter's Licence last month, so I don't remember much. All I remember is that the Dragon Boss is your friend for farming both exp and meseta. Planet Parum, beat the Dragon the first time (1st time gives you relatively nothing), then turn around and head back into that gate to go through a different dungeon and fight the same dragon, but for a greater amount of exp and meseta.
If you're low level, you can go to Moatoob and do some Bruce runs at the Guardian's mission counter. Those are easy, and almost everyone who has a party knows what they're doing. After about 100 or so runs however, it gets repetitive.
Fighting the same dragon over and over and over again is kinda why I cancelled my hunter's licence. :/ I plan on getting another one once the expansion comes out. Maybe.

You can get it for the 360 for $20 new, and it costs $12.95 a month to play. Also you get a free month. The hardest thing about the game is the first 10 levels. Once you get past that the game really begins.

Depends on why you hated them... for starters, part 3 is a lot more polished than the previous two..... the story isn't as dark or detailed as the first two, but it definately has it's own pull/vibe.
The game is way easier than the first two games too. A lot more user friendly as well.
It's just way different, I can't tell you for sure if you'll like it, but I think it is worth a try/rent...

And yes, Dragon Quest VIII is a wonderful game... I had to rush to beat that game(reviewed that game 2 years ago)... but it was the best non sleeping marathon I ever had...

well.. to be honest.. the reason i hated the first game was the controls (pre dual shock ps1 sucks for controls) so i guess you can chock that up to "user friendly".. and yeah.. the second one just didn't appeal to me when i finally purchased it (like 2 or 3 years ago.. maybe..)
i will try it if i see it.. i mean i usually try everything.. and i did like the first DDS game.. wasn't too bad.. if its created by that team (from what i understand) then it will be pretty good..
but yeah.. the first game was just too wonky for me.. the controls were hard to understand and I was confused for the 3 to 5 hours i put into it.. made me want to kill myself.

I really have enjoyed atelier iris so far. Although the story is mostly non-essential. (The fact that I cannot remember where I'm going when I return to play the game w/o using the 'mission' button shows the story to not really be that compelling/involving. I completely forgot there was a main villian until he was mentioned again).
The question I really have is if I liked the first one should I pick up the 2nd? I see the third has gotten really poor reviews for backtracking and being a dungeon crawler, so that's off my list. But what is anyone's opinion of AI 2?

Sorry. Actually, I just like Palom's magic abilities, but I liked Rydia's character much better. So it's more of a toss-up really. Rosa's gonna be stuck at that tower for loooonng time though.

The damage I was giving was amazing, but my accuracy was pretty abysmal.
They added new classes aside from the normal Hunter/Ranger/Force, and you can switch between the initial three at almost anytime. Once you level your classes enough, you can switch classes to make a hybrid of any of the 3. I was aiming for Hunter/Ranger, but leveling up Ranger was a pain.
Also, certain races get special bonuses. At lvl 10, Casts get a huge laser/grenade launcher/death beam to fire at enemies, and Beasts get to transform into.....bigger beasts. Three or four different big beast forms to choose from though. Invincibility, Power, Defense, and Agility. Power is usually the best one in the beginning, but once you start to get to harder missions, Invincibility is usually a better choice so that you don't get smacked around while you're fighting up-close. From what I heard, they were still working on the Human/Newman bonuses. Newmans get a summon, and Humans get.....vehicles.

I used to play on Fenrir. Sort of regret transferring to Hades, which ended up being thirty times worse than Fenrir ever was.
Regardless, FFXI was a decently fun game to level a character in, but the tedium of its endgame was unrivaled by anything I've encountered since. I'm still amazed I managed to stay awake through all those marathon HNM camping sessions, let alone stuff like Kirin and Dynamis Lord.

Anyways, if you like making moneys, Planet Moatoob is one good location. You can go and do Bruce Runs with other people at the Guardian's desk there. As long as you can get at least an overall "A" grade for the mission, you make around 9-10k meseta. Even more for "S."

If you think that combat system fast, that's nothing compare to the next episode. I dislike the combat system for that game. All the characters have the same skills and there is very little strategy involved in combat. It either boost aerial or ground attack, afterwards keep doing the same thing for boss fights over and over again

Most of my battles boiled down to Tech Attack-Enemy Attack-Heal-Tech Attack. That is until I got Erde Kraiser.
I don't agree with your complaint about skills. I think you're supposed to tailor each character to their strengths (Giving MOMO and Shion ether based attacks, giving Ziggy and KOS-MOS skills that increase the attacks and defense further, etc.). The same could be (And has been) said about FF XII.

That said, I enjoy Episode 3's more streamlined and quicker battle system.

Fair enough, though from what I remember its combat system was actually rather slow due to its reliance on whoring stock, particularly in boss fights. Plus, the manner in which the characters are differentiated makes a few of them (Ziggy, Shion) rather useless except in a few infrequent situations. I was also never really enamored with the plot, but that's a whole different matter.

Ok, I need a quick clarification here. In FFTactics, can you have a Lancer dual-weild spears? You can do it for other weapons (swords, katanas, fists), but a friend mentioned that spears were out of the picture. I just hope that I'm not wasting my time making my Lancer learn Two Swords.

You can never equip a character with dual 2 handed weapons. I can't think of one jrpg that allow you to. If it was dual 1 handed weapons then it's ok.
Which final fantasy tactics are you playing? Gba or playstation one? If your playing the playstation one version abuse the accumulative trick with squire class. Just play a stage then clear all the enemies except one. Use a knight skill to lower the speed then keep spamming accumalate. My friend over abuse the trick and he ended up being level 50 before the second stage.
In most turn based strategy rpg if you do a self heal or skill you will always get 10xp because the game engine can't recognize how to distribute the experience, so it will always give you 10 xp regardless, the only except is Stella Deus, they got a system that stop this bug.

Hmm.. that's weird. I found the game extremely easy if you get devour your enemies on daily bases and get the high branches on skill tree. The only hard part is getting enough cash to support it.

Really? I beat this game along time ago, so i might forgot about it. Traditionally spears are two handed weapons. According to BoardFourSixNineFour guide on gamefaqs, you can't equip two spears.
Spears have a range of 2 panels and cannot be used with Two Swords. Unlike
FFTA, spears cannot penetrate two targets in one attack.
It's not a big deal since lancers are pretty weak in that game. All you really need is ignore height lancer abilities-the best ability for foot or movement slot in that game. For dual weapons, you probably use ninja class since you don't have to use two weapons ability on a slot or knight class with it's high offensive broadsword. It's even better if you use the dupe trick and get 99 Excalibur. The squire accumalation skill is great for easy level ups and skill point to allocate on different job classes

Xenosaga III is great game since battle system well tune up with it quick combat system, all characters have unique skills or abilities, mech fights are fun to play with and story is pretty good as well, it not quite as good as japanses version since some of stuff is cut out to adjust to teen rating. Inside game, they have pretty good text synopsis of previous episodes. You can get a general idea of the story from wikipedia or watch video clips on youtube

I have a SMT Nocturne question since we're on sort of a Persona thread.
I've been SMT Nocturne for a -long- time now. I'm in the tower of Katsguchi (sp?). I've finished all the kapla's and unlocked pierce for my character.
However, I hear you need the demon who has pierce to beat final boss (spoiler) Luicifer . But to get to that demon you have to summon Seraph Metreon (sp), right? And according to fuse him according to the dobulejump guide you need fuse all the seraphs together and be level 94.
I'm at level 76 or so now. I'm enjoying the game and don't know if I should just try and finish it at this point or do I need to really level grind to level 94 in order to get the demon with pierce?
Thanks.

From Digitaldevildb.com
Unlocking the Pierce Skill
Marogareh, the first Magatama you receive, has a skill on it that is listed simply as a question mark. It is impossible to earn this skill for your Protagonist through normal level raising. Once you complete the Labyrinth of Amala's Fifth, and final, Kapla, the skill will be unlocked. However, finishing the game in this manner locks in a certain ending and the others become unavailable. The choice is up to you, but the result is worth seeing on one of your play throughs.
Demons under your control can learn Pierce in a more roundabout method; however, this method does not require you to finish the Fifth Kapla and thus does allows you to reach one of the other endings. In the Fifth Kapla defeat Metatron to unlock him in the Cathedral of Shadows. Once he is fused, place him in your party and make your way to the doorway that can only be opened by "one of light". This time around you can open the door since Metatron is in your party. Make your way through this area to the Shady Broker, who will be selling the demon Gimimahkala for 200,000. This particular Gimimahkala holds the skill of Pierce, which can be transferred through Sacrifice Fusions if so desired.

Thanks.yo that final boss is a BITCH!! it took me like 4 times to beat him, and each battle was like 2 hours!! no lie.
but to tell you tho, I was also not even level 80 so I had to take the battle HELLA slow.
I remember how I did it was have two characters with healing and stat boosting / stat lowering spells, Dante, and my main hero with Pierce.
Hero did pierce every round, in hopes of getting a critical hit, with dante I also used high scritical rate moves becoz I wanted those extra turns!
the other two guys were strictly stat boosting until we were maxed and the boss was max assed, then I had to heal every round to keep my HP up (since pierce consumes HP)
I think I also had a magatama that could void certain attacks to help me on the defensive (in addition to my max evade / enemy lowed accuracy)
anyways, take it slooooooooow and u will eventually beat him, which I think is better than spending that time level grinding

I just finished Tales of the World yesterday. Last boss is pretty annoying when it have 1/3 of it's remaining life points; it's attack damage increase significantly and does high damaged unavoidable magical attack. I have to level grind a bit to defeat it. I can't believe there is 300 side quests in this game. Each quest is equal to .3% (.003) and one of them is round to .4% to make numbers even. The good part is most of quests are very short.

Tales of Abyss isn't that bad.I don't recall bad loading times in world map. I think your problem is comparing more to Tales of Symphonia since that game set the bar so high with it's refine game mechanics, battle system (a big leap from tales of destiny 2) and pacing of story, starts off really slow, you expect much more from this game. Most of materials are reused in this game and very few new elements were add to this game. Well, that's how i felt. It is a pretty good game, but not Tales of Symphonia good.

It seem like your really into ready-action-point battle(RAP) system since your paying Stella Deus and Hoshigami Remix. The problem with RAP it is extremely broken when you are using mages or archer. They don't have to use as much RAP since most of their attack are long range, hence reduce points spent on movement. Archers and mages will probably steal majority of exp. In Hoshigami the RAP system is more broken since you can custom fit all you characters from fighters, mages, archers or hybrid archer mage.

It's more that I love strategy rpgs then liking the RAP system. In fact, I think the RAP sytem can be at times pretty annoying, espically in Hoshigami. I hate that taking one step foward will cause me to have to wait for nine other characters before I can move again. Well besides that, yeah Im enjoying both those games. I wanna try to beat both of them before Jeanne d' Arc, Luminous Arc, and Fire Emblem Wii get released. Lot of good strategy rpgs getting released this fall.

I think you are using too little rap or your just stand on same panel. Your turn ends when you choose to end and you next turn is based on the amount of RAP you used. The fewer the amount you used, your next turn will occur much quicker or vice versa, the more you used your next turn will occur much later. I think their is adjustable rap in this game if you want delay your turn

What do you guys think of the Megaman Battle Network/StarForce series?
I've been a big fan of them since MMBN3, even though nothing much tends to change between games. I picked up StarForce Leo today, and I'm def. enjoying it.

Well, In the case of Hoshigami, yeah I do tend to stay on the same panel, but only till an enemy is close enough that I can move towards them without having to use too much rap. There is a adjustable rap that lets you delay or take your turn much later, but I find it much easier to not move a charcter and end there turn. That lets you delay your turn by one or two. But thats only if an enemy is to far from me. I don't want to use up all my rap and be stuck around a bunch of enemys waiting on them to kill me:) .

They're horrible. I played maybe about 10-15% through 3 and 5, and the games are just so similar. So overfilled with random encounters. No way to really level up. they're just ick. But I know if I see one on clearence for $5 or less I'll probably pick it up.

It takes about 25-30 hours. The characters quests are the second half of the game. Took me about 50 hours to finish ToL.

I sunk another six hours into Brave Story.
Man does that game get alot right.
Pace and combat are two of the best I have seen on any system in a while.
I also beat Puzzle Quest: CW this weekend. As far as RPGs go... I could so see this game being a great MMO. Maybe even a handheld MMO. Loads of fun.

I've been playing Ar Tonelico like mad since saturday, and I'm 21 hours in.
Yeesh, I shouldn't have gotten the game. I can't believe how mediocore the whole thing is. It's gotta be the simplest RPG I've played this gen. I'm almost afraid the Atelier series is going to be similar to this. I'm hardly using any spells besides Cinna and Energy Ball. Hell all I do in boss fights is Cinna till I'm maxed out, and there's been zero challenge the whole time I've been playing.
How much longer do I have? Misha went back to doing that song, and now I'm in Platina to try and find the church army
Not too good of a game, but I needed something to play before Persona 3, and I'm going to see the game through to its end.

I see. Well, the story may pick up and it will become better. I'll be optimistic. So far the best parts have been diving. The game is also fast paced, I'll give it that, crazy how I'm gaing levels like a beast. Everyone's at 58-59.
Did I get sort of a split path option? When you choose whether to join the search party or join Radolf and Aurica? I won't mind a 2nd playthrough to check that out.

Shut up, "Mr. I had mine for a month already." Ya know, you really passed up an awsome deal for with those Pokemon cards. Using a Pheonix Down and reviving this thread:
What RPGs are you guys playing now? I beat Persona 3 several weeks ago and started on Eternal Sonata. (170 hours of P3, all I gotta say is fuck)
As for Eternal Sonata so far I'm 20 hours in and the story's not all that great, but then I don't expect much from JRPGs these days. The battle system's not all too complex (which isn't really a bad thing), I love the colorful graphic. But it's a filler till I get flooded with Christmas releases.

I'm trudging through Tale of Eternia and Jeanne D'Arc (both on psp) and then Rune Factory on the ds.
Within in the next two weeks, Disgeae: Afternnon of Darkness and Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is getting added to that currently played list. Wow, that's a lot of RPG action going on at one time!

Not really playing much on the RPG front. Played a bit of Front Mission on the DS. That's really about it.
The big one I'm waiting for is Mass Effect. Definitely the game I want the most right now. I can't wait.

Yeah RPG-wise it's been a little dry the past month. Guess that's why this thread died down some.
Don't hear too much about Blue Dragon. Kinda disapointing, I was hoping it would really hit off in the states. Still I'll play through it once I find one for under $30.

I'm not playing any RPGs, though I got some strategy RPGs like FFT and Jeanne D' Arc that I hafta play through sometime. There doesn't seem to be anything good on the JRPG front for the rest of the year, but thankfully, there's stuff like Hellgate: London and The Witcher coming out on PC.

Playing through Blue Dragon, but put it down since the Orange Box. Gonna finish that then probably Eternal Sonata. Also playing through Puzzle Quest on the 360.
Then i need to go back and finish FF XII which im about 48 hours into and Tales of Eternia which im about 25 hrs. Also Started Zelda Phantom Hourglass which is still kinda rpg since its on the DS.
Just started Blue Dragon today. I am probably more impress by the first hour of BD then the 25 hours then I spent on Eternal Sonata

I like both, but i much prefer the battle system of Eternal Sonata. But i like the fact that blue dragon plays like an older RPG has turn based battles, world maps, etc. Blue dragon also has a nice class system that adds a little depth withou over complicating it. Granted its not a revolutionary title but for those who grew up with rpgs its refreshing to play. I think you couldnt really go wrong wither way, but blue dragon is more traditional.

Eternal Sonata destroys Blue Dragon. I found Blue Dragon to be horribly boring and mediocre.
SL4IN
10-28-2007, 12:27 PM
personally, I prefer blue dragon over eternal sonata because I like traditional turn based rpg's over real time combat.
I am not that impress by eternal sonata 's battle system. You still have to wait for your enemies to attack and it is not as fun as Tales of the Abyss. The cut screen in eternal sonata are really boring to me. I only played a bit of Blue Dragon but I like it a lot better than ES. Also ES is about 25-30 hours while Blue Dragon is 50 hours plus so that might be a factor to you. You probably should DL the demo to have a better idea which one you might like better.
