Based on the Dutch article, here is my preview. No, this is not Saturn Bomberman or any existing Bomberman. Bomberman 94 is better than Bomberman 93, and Saturn Bomberman is better than any of them. Still, this will be a good one!

After a failed attempt at bringing the Bomberman franchise to Xbox 360 (Bomberman Act Zero was the worst-selling game of 2006), Hudson has finally decided to make the Bomberman game that everybody wanted in the first place. Developer Backbone Entertainment is readying Bomberman Live for a June Xbox Live Arcade release. Bomberman Live appears to be much closer to classic Bomberman games than Act Zero, both in terms of looks and gameplay options.

Dutch site X Power http://www.x-power.be/?act=galleries&gallery_id=617 has a full screenshot gallery and preview of the game. Their preview is written in some nonsense language, so I've taken it upon myself to gleam as much information as possible for my fellow Bomberman fans.

-Bomberman Live seems to be most closely-based on Bomberman Online for Dreamcast as well as the Asian PC/PS2 versions. However, unlike the Dreamcast game, the playing field is not angled. That's good!

-Players are able to customize their Bomberman's head, face, and body from a large selection of parts. Some parts must be unlocked. About 10,000 different combinations are possible.

-The single-player game consists of versus battles against the computer. People buy Bomberman for the multiplayer, and this version looks like it won't disappoint.
2-4 players can play locally and 2-8 players can battle online. There will be online tournaments and I will win them! You heard it here first.

-Only 2 game modes are confirmed (with 1 coming later via Downloadable Content) but there are probably more. Confirmed Game Modes:
-Normal Battle, Zombie Match (AKA Panel Paint: the player whose color covers the most panels at the end wins)

-Revenge Bomber (Miso Bomber) returns. Defeated players can circle the arena and fire bombs at active players. Revenge can be set to On, Off, and Super.

-Power-ups are customizable.
Confirmed power-ups:
Fire Up, Bomb Up, Speed Up, Line Bombs, Kick Bombs, Skulls (random bad effect), Throw Bombs, Punch Bombs, Full Fire, Spike Bombs, P Bombs, and Land Mines (ugh).
There will be no Dinos or Louies (mounts) in this version. Rumors suggest that the Dinos ate the Louies before finally turning on each other.

-There are 8 confirmed stages and 6 more coming through downloadable content.

Circus (floor arrows divert kicked bombs), Stadium (classic stage), Graveyard (trapdoors), Jungle Ruins, Pirate Ocean (no hard blocks), Space Station, Snow, and Cavern

-After the game's launch, 3 downloadable content packs will be introduced. No cost is known and it is unclear whether the Gamerpics and Themes are included in the actual content packs.

the 360 should easily handle the 10 player mode if it is saturn bomberman... problem is though to play 10 players in the original, a LARGE screen was necessary since it used larger levels for 10 player play... and well, shrunk your character's size.... it'll be hard to play on anything smaller that 30"

I have the Saturn version . The most I've ever played with is 7 [only one multitap] .

The Saturn version runs in 640 x 480 , it was kinda interlacy looking .
The only drawback is your BomberMan is really small , and it's hard to know where you start .
Sometimes you'll get killed before you realize where you are .

from the items i see such as the rollerskates it seems to be the same multiplayer as the DS versions, which were just not as fun as the old school Bomberman's. But it seems like this one has viruses which were the greatest things about the old one.aren't Rollerskates the basic "speed" powerup in just about every Bomberman game? They're definitely not unique to the DS version...

What are "Sands" and "Personages"..?

And even though they are probably gonna rape us like they did with Lumines, at least these add-on packs come with say.. gamer pics & themes..as well as whatever these personages & sands are..lol

Also, Lumines itself is 1200 points..I just don't think Bomberman is going to be 1200 points. Though, 400 points would be great I see this def as an 800 point game.

I'm more concerned with the pricing of the add-ons actually. If they are 100-200 each, then that's fine really. But if they are like anything around 400 OR more..then fuck that!

It probably makes no difference. I sincerely doubt they will lower the price at the end if you buy it all at once. XBLA is all about milking us for every fucking penny we have to play games that came out 10 years ago.

Based on the Dutch article, here is my preview. No, this is not Saturn Bomberman or any existing Bomberman. Bomberman 94 is better than Bomberman 93, and Saturn Bomberman is better than any of them. Still, this will be a good one!

After a failed attempt at bringing the Bomberman franchise to Xbox 360 (Bomberman Act Zero was the worst-selling game of 2006), Hudson has finally decided to make the Bomberman game that everybody wanted in the first place. Developer Backbone Entertainment is readying Bomberman Live for a June Xbox Live Arcade release. Bomberman Live appears to be much closer to classic Bomberman games than Act Zero, both in terms of looks and gameplay options.

Dutch site X Power http://www.x-power.be/?act=galleries&gallery_id=617 has a full screenshot gallery and preview of the game. Their preview is written in some nonsense language, so I've taken it upon myself to gleam as much information as possible for my fellow Bomberman fans.

-Bomberman Live seems to be most closely-based on Bomberman Online for Dreamcast as well as the Asian PC/PS2 versions. However, unlike the Dreamcast game, the playing field is not angled. That's good!

-Players are able to customize their Bomberman's head, face, and body from a large selection of parts. Some parts must be unlocked. About 10,000 different combinations are possible.

-The single-player game consists of versus battles against the computer. People buy Bomberman for the multiplayer, and this version looks like it won't disappoint.
2-4 players can play locally and 2-8 players can battle online. There will be online tournaments and I will win them! You heard it here first.

-Only 2 game modes are confirmed (with 1 coming later via Downloadable Content) but there are probably more. Confirmed Game Modes:
-Normal Battle, Zombie Match (AKA Panel Paint: the player whose color covers the most panels at the end wins)

-Revenge Bomber (Miso Bomber) returns. Defeated players can circle the arena and fire bombs at active players. Revenge can be set to On, Off, and Super.

-Power-ups are customizable.
Confirmed power-ups:
Fire Up, Bomb Up, Speed Up, Line Bombs, Kick Bombs, Skulls (random bad effect), Throw Bombs, Punch Bombs, Full Fire, Spike Bombs, P Bombs, and Land Mines (ugh).
There will be no Dinos or Louies (mounts) in this version. Rumors suggest that the Dinos ate the Louies before finally turning on each other.

-There are 8 confirmed stages and 6 more coming through downloadable content.
Confirmed stages:
Circus (floor arrows divert kicked bombs), Stadium (classic stage), Graveyard (trapdoors), Jungle Ruins, Pirate Ocean (no hard blocks), Space Station, Snow, and Cavern

-After the game's launch, 3 downloadable content packs will be introduced. No cost is known and it is unclear whether the Gamerpics and Themes are included in the actual content packs.

Man, I wish the 360 physically allowed more than 4 controllers in a local game. I mean, it's not very often that this will be a problem for me, but it would nice for those rare occasions. That was the one lone positive thing about multitaps... how they allowed for more than 4 local players.

But nit-picking aside... this is a day-1 purchase for sure. Glad to see that the miso-bomber stuff is all in! I hope they also add that orb thing from the Dreamcast version (I think it was called "Hyper Bomber" mode or something like that). Those matches can get really frantic.

Yeah, Hyper Bomber was one of the few good things about the buggy-ass Dreamcast version. They could allow 8-player local games using System Link... I seriously doubt they will though.

I've always wanted to develop the ultimate Bomberman site, patterned after the Castlevania Dungeon and Double Dragon Dogo. My site will be called Bomberman Stadium. Eventually I plan to have a personal review of every Bomberman game ever sold - that's a lot of writing!

Thing is, I'm ADD and kind of lazy so I need lots of support to stay on the project! Would any of you who are strong writers and know a lot about Bomberman care to write some pieces for the site? Can anyone contribute screencaptures of various Bomberman games for me? Any other kind of assistance?

Amazingly, I've never played one of these Bomberman games, but this one looks like fun. Probably a purchase for me, unless it ends up all stipped down like Worms. Reading about this game, though, it looks pretty well done.

I think I can safely say this is going to be well worth your 800 points. And if you've never played a Bomberman game before how on earth would you notice if it were stripped down?

You're supposed to only send the console (no cords, controllers, or HDD) unless MS asks you to send along the HDD during the tech support call (when they make you do all that diagnostic crap). I suppose it's based on whether or not they think your HDD is part of the problem.

Also, according to QJ.net, Yie Ar Kung Fu will be on XBLA on 7/18 in addition to Bomberman, and will be 400 points.

Answer:Yes, but to use the downloaded content you will need to be connected to Xbox Live. Content is bound by console Serial Number, if it doesn't match, it will need to connect to XBL to verify that you can own it. Otherwise, items like XBLA games will revert to trial games since it can't confirm that you own it. Strange copy protection, but it's there.

Yie Ar Kung Fu by Konami is not the same game as Kung Fu by Irem. They're completely different.

Also, Worms may not have every feature of its console brethren, but it's still an absolutely fantastic XBLA game. The new BGs and sounds help, of course.

Bomberman Live looks to be the best Bomberman game since Saturn Bomberman, so don't worry about it lacking anything (besides a story mode).

Game works great online....I have two complaints only:

1) The single player is boring. It's just the online mode but with CPU players. You have to play it if you want to unlock costumes.

2) When hosting an online match, you can't change the options once the lobby is created. You have to create a whole new room and re-invite everyone. They gotta fix this.

Otherwise, a great XBLA game. It includes vision cam support so the winner can gloat over his victory.

We definitely had some fun 8-player action. I've never played online with Cheapy - it was hilarious. It's like the (apparently restrained, who knew?) CAGcast Cheapy in Xtreme mode! :rofl:

I played for a bit after we finished to snag some costumes and get an achievement or two. I got a couple of costumes and the Zombie mode achievement.

This is more minor than Cheapy's issues above (in particular being able to change options), but it would be nice for it to show which costume you snagged at least at the end of the game. You have to go to customization and scroll through them all to see which is new.

I unlocked an outfit called the "Robes of Evasion" (I believe). Needless to say I switched from my Roman Centurion Pirate to that.

Edit - Oh, and now I finally have a use for that third controller I picked up a few weeks ago. My boys and I will have a blast with this tomorrow evening. I can already see my 4 year-old jumping all over the living room playing this (see, it's not just the Wii that can get kids movin' around!).

This has been a problem in a lot of Bomberman games, they used to stick a crappy story mode in were you had to bomb monsters on a maze for single player.

TBH I think I'd rather have the multiplayer with bots as the single player game, thats really the only mode people like anyway.

Does this version have the little kangaroos from the genesis version ?

EDIT - I'll deffo be picking up this tonight, gotta love Bomberman (except Act Zero obviously).

Not sure if it helps, but clicking the right thumbstick changes the camera a little. It zooms in and it gives the option to do a full top/down view like the original, and you can zoom in from there as well. Just toggle the views by clicking the right thumbstick. CheapyD figured this out late...um early this morning when we had an 8 player crazy ass deathmatch. Good thing Cheapy didn't win while I played, supposedly his victory screenshot is a shot of his "niss-nacks" :lol:

how the hell do you unlock stuff?

In SP, once in a while a glowing crystal drops onto the field. Pick it up and you unlock an item. The rules say that you can unlock items in unranked Live matches, but I've yet to do so.

Here's a tip for getting 3 kills at once and for the 130 tiles in a zombie paint match (although I have not gotten it yet): put all weapons in the game and try to get both the super flame power up and the skull bomb power up. That combo blows up 1/4th the stage.

On a side note, I had a blast playing with LinkinPrime, Musicnoteless, I0, Zewone, Mr. Jared and of course CheapyD this morning. Here's to many more times on enjoyment.

He won the match right before you came in and he threatened with the niz-nacks, but didn't quite, uh, pull the trigger ;).

Just so everyone knows, at the end of the match (once a person has won 2 or 3 games - whatever the settings are) it shows either your bomberman character or your vision camera feed. If you didn't win, it shows a static shot from your camera. If you win, you get an extended time (at least 20-30 seconds) to do whatever you want on the camera with a captive audience :lol:. We had one guy pimp Viva Pinata and show off what I think was one of the upcoming plush toys (now, I want want of those for my kids - Cheapy, did you know that Jared guy or was he some random SOB from Live?).

You have to make sure there is enough CPU players first.

Then, just kill yourself.

In super revenge, when you kill someone from your cart, you get back in the game.

After coming back, just win the match.

There's a setting for "Revenge" called "Super". Basically, you die, and if you kill someone while riding the cart, you get to be back in the game and that bomber goes to the cart, after coming back from the cart to the game, win the match and its supposed to give it to you.

Ah, I see. I guess I didn't kill someone to get back in (and I may have missed that 'super' setting so it probably wouldn't have mattered). I thought it meant be in the cart for one game, then come back in the next and win the match (which is what I did). D'oh! Well, good, anyway, I have something else to shoot for now.

And now they are playing it - a definite thumbs up from them. My older son (7)has already created himself a pirate Bomberman and they took to the game very quickly. In fact, I'd say they figured out the controls and how to get away from the bombs much faster than I did. I kept dropping them behind myself and getting trapped last night when we all played.

And they LOVE the super cart mode where they can get back in the game.

And I like this game for them because they can play it without any help from me, so they don't bug me constantly when I'm trying to work (or CAG). :lol:

They did have to run in here and tell me they got an achievement though (apparently they both got one, not sure which). Whoever at MS thought up achievements should get one huge bonus - they've got my kids hooked, that's for sure. (Damn Microsoft!)

Oh yeah - I played with them tonight and helped them get a few. My youngest just has a regular profile (no XBL) and my oldest has a Silver account. He's almost got more achievements than me now. You can check it out: LightningMQueen. Yes, he's really, really into the Cars movie ;). Feel free to add him (if you have spare room) He won't be playing online much at all, but he loves looking at the leaderboards and has no one on his friend list but me. I might use some 48 hour codes for him for Bomberman though at some point (he'd just play without the headset ;)).

Also, for people wondering about customization. In Local play, if you notice those gold diamond-shaped balls. I believe those are the Costume Balls that you need for an Achievement and more customization. Someone asked me during online play, but I didn't have an answer.

Just select Xbox Live from the main menu and then select "Player Match," then you get a screen asking you to add any additional local players before you move on to the actual matchmaking (I haven't tried RANKED, but I'm just assuming you can't have local guests in a ranked match).

So yes, you CAN have four people on one Xbox in a Live match, very very nice!!! :D I really wish more games would do that!

How do you get that to work? When I tried to have my uncle join in a game last night, a screen pops up asking me to log in another profile or something. I press A and my Gamertag shows up as a ghosted form, but when I press B to back out, it still doesn't allow a second person to join.A lot of games insist on having a separate gamer profile for each player. Just make some dummy profiles in the dashboard (don't worry, they won't need Live accounts or anything like that). I made three extra profiles and just called them "Playa 2," "Playa 3," and "Playa 4."

Now when that screen pops up, there should be extra profiles available for any other local players.

I love the core gameplay, but does the online component here just kind of... suck? Are there options for reserved seats? No way to kick laggers mid-game? And if someone doesn't press the A button after a round, you just have to wait for them - no forced start that I have seen. And it's already been said, but you have to rebuild the room and re-invite to change anything, including the map.

Ah well, at least it's Bomberman. Good times have been had by all.

There is SP game which is the same as online but you can go at it with 3-7 CPU players and you can choose their diffculty, game type, maps and item availability along with other settings. Its a good way to train for online matches.

There's this one level that I just played on Live that is crazy. If you leave your play time on too long, you're gonna get into deep water. I wish there was a way to turn it off in the randomizer.

Not sure how much control you have over it, but somewhere in the match options you can set whether you want it to stick with one stage or have a different stage each round. It's definitely in there because last night I was in a room where each round started on a different stage.

Not that. I mean where you have this picture in picture effect.You have to go into options and Save a picture. At the end of the match it will show that picture instead of showing the Bomberman dude. Unless you come in first place, in which case you get the Live video feed in the center.

I was playing a lot of local co-op last night and I noticed that the game tries to show you what costume pieces you unlocked from the game that just ended but it flashes by in less then a blink. I'm sure that will have to get patched up as well.

I'm gonna create a game in a few hours with just Full Fire and Dangerous Bomb.

I'll also create a 1 minute match to 9 with that empty map I talked about earlier. That should be a good way to an easy achievement...maybe.

Just make sure you have extra profiles ready for the additional players (you can just set up dummy profiles with no Live accounts).

btw I'm assuming you can only have one special bomb at a time? Like if you get the Spike Bomb it'll override the P-Bomb you already had, right? And in all cases it is just the first bomb placed each cycle that gets the special effect, correct?

Hey picked this up yesterday. Best XBOX live game ever. 10 Player support would be awesome though.

Speaking of Achievements...I'm looking at Completely Unstoppable. Do you have to get online achievements just by doing ANY match under Xbox Live, or does it have to be ranked or player? I.E. no achievement through a private match.

Oh, and 8-players is plenty. I'd ask for more items or options before I worried about 2 extra players in a game that's already very hectic.

I wanted to play in your tournament on launch day, but I was in the middle of a game, and I was dead tired. I do want to get in some matches with ya. Want to take some pointers from the Bomberman pro ;)

I wish this game had the Timer Bomb where you get to choose when to set it off. That was so awesome in Bomberman 93!
