I bought an old pc from a friend, put some newer parts in it, and threw it in a new case. i've had it for about a year, but never played many games. i recently sold all my consoles while i'm looking for a job, but i still have a 360 controller and just ordered a wireless receiver. here's the pc specs:
1.4 ghz P4
640 mb ram
ATI 7000 w/ 64 mb
direct x 9
Are there any games i can play? particularly with the contoller as i've never much liked gaming with a mouse and keyboard (that leaves out most RTS games, i realize). anything you've recently picked up for cheap?

Well, Diablo II comes to mind... But I think you'd need a mouse & keyboard for that. You could probably run MAME and some (legally owned) ROMs with a controller.

351 Board Games.
heh, just thinking about it because it's an active topic, but Grim Fandago's an awesome game. Hell, pretty much any Lucasarts adventure game from the 90's.

Max Payne
Soldier Of Fortune
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Unreal Tournament
Unreal 2
Nightmare Creatures
basically anything pre 2000 you **should** be fine to play...

Emulators/ROMs...
Control is a very important aspect of game design. PC games are designed for mouse and keyboard, console games are designed for controllers. Don't bother PC gaming if you aren't willing to get used to mouse and keyboard.

UT2004!
Tomb Raider Anniversary has very low system requirements, since it's not next-gen style, but just a really polished port of the PS2 version (but it still looks great, just not as good as Legend).
TONS of classic shooters would run great.
Half-Life 2 will run in Shaq-Fuing software rendering if you need it to, I used to play it on my shitty laptop w/ an integrated video card. The water looked like mud but it was completely playable, so it would probably be quite fun even on your machine. No HDR though :(
Blizzard games always have flexible requirements, too, so any WoW or Warcraft 3 goodness would probably play fine.

That looks similar to what I've got, except I'm more on the mhz and less on the RAM.
What I've played and loved:
Far Cry
Deus Ex
No One Lives Forever 1 and 2
Fable: The Lost Chapters
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
You could also try something like Morrowind which I've found to be Boreowind, ha, get it?
I'd just say look at sites like Gamespot and IGN and find out what games won "best of the year" awards for the years 2005 and before for the PC. Or go to www.gamerankings.com and click "The Rankings" on the left and then set your limiters to specific years for the PC like 2003 or 2004.

I agree with Deus Ex.. if you haven't played it, you owe it to yourself to do so. I'd also say the Wing Commander games if you can track them down.. also Worms Armageddon or World Party. Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo of course.. Roufuss recently posted a deal for the Age of Empires collection in jewel case at Walmart for $9.
I'm looking at Sid Meier's Pirates specs, and believe it or not.. I think you could run it as well. I frequently play it and never get tired of it.

I highly doubt he could play those games with a framerate anywhere near decent, especially Far Cry.

You will be able to run many older games on that system, I would suggest upping that Video Card a bit.
Try searching on my site to see if a game you are interested in will run on your rig.

Lots of great turn-based strategy games, if you enjoy those sort of games.

Seriously, if thats all you got, try gametap. Some of those games like Tomb Raider Anniversery and Far Cry are on there, so you wont be out money if they dont work. Deus Ex 1 and 2 are on there as well, along with alot of games from the last 7-8 years or so. You could get a month free if you look around.
Also, you may be able to play Half Life 1, CS 1.6, and any mods on the HL engine.

Go to Walmart's electronics section and look in the dimly lit back corner where they keep PC games. You should see one shelf of "new releases" about a year old, one shelf of utilities like 3D Garden Designer that no one ever buys and then you get to your section; the 4.99 jewel case PC games from '98.
You might be able to play some of those.

If you have $50, go to wallmart and pick up an fx 5200 128 mb they have there. My backup p.c can play some css source, plays the far cry demo pretty good.
As for games that you can play
All the silent hills for the p.c. Use of controller a must for all of them so no real keypad use needed.
Point and click adventure with great story The Longest Journey
