I just saw a commercial for Van Halen's greatest hits on TV and thus I was inspired to put this poll up for CAG's

This is a classic rock poll. Who is/was the best singer for Van Halen?

Roth. For sure. Hagar is such a $$$. I was gonna see Van Halen this summer, but I wasnt able to (mom wouldnt let me)...lucky i didnt cuz I found out Hagar was gonna sing, so Im glad I avoided it. Though, I woulda loved to see Eddie play Eruption live.

I love Diamond Dave, But methinks I have to go the Hagar route.

David Lee Roth for sure. But we all know the lead singers are just a front for the real man Eddie. Holy crap that dude is a guitar god... I don't know how he was like 77th or something like that on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest guitarists. (Like 20 spots behind Ike Turner for Pete's sake!!!)

umm... I think you mean that David Lee Roth is overly cocky and not Hagar. Why do you think the band did not keep Dave as frontman when they brought him back in 96? David Lee Roth still thinks he has it, when he totally stunk up the stage on the last tour. Sammy carried the last tour

Ok. Yeah, he was cocky. But Hagar, such a fruit, I read an interview and I was like "OMGWTFBBQ COCKY!"

Damn...the fur is flying in this thread.

You guys can count me in the anti-Hagar camp. Granted, Roth is not aging well and he's partially senile but during his prime, he was the best.

Edward "Eddie" Van Halen is one of the best guitarists ever. I don't even like VH, but the way that guy plays the guitar... crazy.

Who the hell is Gary Cherone anyway? That's a gay freaking name for a rock singer. Doesn't this guy have a good enough agent to get him to change his name before he front's for Van freaking Halen?

Rock singers aren't named Gary. Period.

And nice to see they left Billy Corgan off the list (unless I missed him somewhere) doesn't surprise me though, Corgan is probably the most woefully underrated guitarist ever. Meanwhile John Frusciante of RHCP is #18, ok he's good, but not the 18th best guitarist ever. Jesus tapdancing christ.

the one that irks me is how high Kurt Cobain is listed. He is not that great of a guitar player

Diamond Dave was a better showman but Hagar was a better singer

Diamond Dave all the way.
And I will say this Eddie is a great guitar player, but he is also the biggest fucking a-hole out of all of them, I hate that guy.

Let's face it. The best VH albums came out with Dave at the helm. He's not a great singer, but his voice fits the music like a glove. Sammy put out some good albums with VH, but his best work was as a solo artist. Sammy is a better singer than Dave but is still not a very good singer. So, based upon the question asked in the poll, I would vote for Gary Cherone as having the best singing voice even though the VH album with him sucked.

That is pretty much the way I feel about VH. They were both great during their tenures with the band.
If I had to choose one it would be Hagar. Gotta give some props to the founder of Cabo Wabo tequila.

You can say that again. IMO, he shouldn't even be on the list....

And on a side note, you can't have a Van Halen discussion without:
I bought Van Halen I
It was the best damn record I ever owned
TG&Y 1978
Two hand tapping guitar technique really got me off
Eruption yeah, ain't talkin' 'bout love, I'm on fire

Tomorrow may come
Tomorrow may never come again
Can't you hear Jamie cryin?
She's runnin' with the devil

I bought Women and Children First
Fair Warning and Van Halen II
Dance the night away
1984 my favorite record yeah I wore it down
Might as well jump

Tomorrow may come
Tomorrow may never come again
Can't you hear Jamie cryin?
She's runnin' with the devil

Is this what you wanted, Sammy Hagar?
Sammy Hagar, is this what you wanted, man?
Dave lost his hairline but you lost your cool buddy
Can't drive 55
I'll never buy your lousy records again
Again, again, again, never again...

Tomorrow may come
Tomorrow may never come again
Can't you hear Jamie cryin?
She's runnin' with the devil
Jump jump jump jump jump jump jump, might as well jump

If my screen name didn't already give it away, of course my vote is for the Redrocker SAMMY HAGAR! I love every Van Halen album the band ever did. But creatively and musically, the band just grew more with Sammy Hagar on vocals.

I'm the biggest Van Halen fan you'll ever find. I was involved with the Van Halen fan club for years and I had the pleasure of meeting the band on a number of occasions. Sammy Hagar is by far the nicest, most down to earth rock star you'll ever find on the planet. Michael Anthony is the same way. I worship Eddie and Alex Van Halen too, but from a personal perspective...they try to keep to themselves and aren't as personable. David Lee Roth is just flat out of his mind. Go read his book "Crazy From The Heat" and you'll see exactly what I mean. As for Gary Cherone...I along with the majority of VH fans would prefer to forget about that whole VH3 fiasco. I never accpeted Gary as a lead singer for VH, and I never will.
Go out and see Van Halen on tour this summer. You won't be sorry. The show is outstanding!
