The 250 GB hdd on my Intel iMac isn't cutting it anymore, so I need an external hdd solution fast. I've seen a few 250's for around $100 (I think they are those Western Digital 'My Books'). Just wondering if there's any better ones than that.
I'd really like to get one that has FireWire too, but I can get by without it if the price is really good.

If you're up for the mail-in-rebate gamble, TigerDirect has a 320GB one for $70AR:

The rebate is through Iomega, not TigerDirect, so there's some chance they may actually honor it.

Check w/ Best Buy. Recently they've had the Western Digital MyBook external drives for cheaper than most (500gb for $130, and w/ 10% coupon, I got it for around $117). I really like these drives since they are quiet and shutdown/restart when they've been idle for a bit of time. This is with no rebates. I did jump on a deal with Office Depot a few weeks ago for this same drive ($140 w/ a $40 mail-in rebate = $100). Good hunting (you should also check www.techbargains.com).

I was just at BB and they had a 250Gb LaCie external drive for on sale $59.99 (with no rebates either). There was supposedly a 500Gb version of it also on sale for $79.99 or $89.99 but they were all sold out of that one.
I stepped in line at customer service to ask if they had more of the 500Gb's at other stores or if I could get a rain check but after waiting for 10 minuets for someone to help me, I got pissed off and left without buying anything.

I actually just got the 250 GB Western Digital MyBook last week from BB. I love it, it's perfectly sized for me and has a nice green glow, haha. It came out to just over $100 after tax.

I have heard a couple of people complain that the Western Digital Drives don't work properly if hooked up to an Apple Wireless Base Station (as a repository for multiple machines on a wireless network). Anyone have any experience there?

That 500GB MyBook was $100 just a week or two ago. I picked one up then since I needed some more space too. I have two of them and for the price, they're good externals. There's a few annoyances but nothing major.

I think I'll just go back and pick up that 250Gb LaCie drive for $59.99. It's by far the cheapest one I could find and the reviews on it were very good.
BTW, these are YMMV. I called another store by me to see if they had the 500 Gb ones and they said they cleared these out a while ago. So it looks like these 250's are back stock they are trying to dump.
