TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- The chief architect of Sony's PlayStation game console stepped down on Tuesday as the Japanese company struggles to defend its dominance in the video game industry and revive its reputation as an electronics pioneer.
Ken Kutaragi, 56, stepped down as Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s chairman and group chief executive, the gaming unit said Tuesday. The unit is now headed by Kazuo Hirai, SCE's former president and chief operating officer.
Kutaragi had already been relieved of day-to-day responsibilities as president last year but stayed on as its chief executive and chairman.
Though no longer a board member, Kutaragi will hold an advisory post at the gaming unit, according to SCE official Sayoka Henmi.
It's about time?

Didn't he already? What was the simliar news about Kutaragi that broke a month or so ago, that prompted Nintendo to say that they wouldn't mind hiring him or some such?

There is nothing arrogant about harakiri.

This is how it's done in Japan-- you don't get fired, because that would look bad for a company and they're all about saving face at any cost. Instead, you get pushed further down the chain until you barely exist, except on the payroll. he probably didn't "step down"
They must really take the PS3's lack of immediate success seriously.

"I lost, so I'm going to kill myself", instead of going out with a fight?
Next time I'm in a burning building, I'm just going to leave and not bother rescuing any of the tenants.

I didn't think of it that way, but you're right.

agreed. with all the stories floating around about his actions within sony and just his overall mishandling of the ps3 its understandable that he should step down. the ps3 isnt a lost cause as so many wish it would be it'll only take a few things to bring up up to snuff ( the major being a price drop). at least hes still there in some capacity and whose to say he cant redeem himself.

ROFL! Sony has even adopted what Nintendo was saying before the new consoles were released. "Well, we aren't really 'competing' against the Wii..." No shit, Sony. You're getting your ass handed to you.
