Yeah, I remember that. I wasn't a huge fan of Aaliyah, but that was sad. Missy is very talented IMO.

Yeah, I picked up one defunkt album and enjoyed it.
I definately don't like much mainstream r&b. most acid jazz is too processed.
As far as 'funk' goes....
Funkadelic. (not parliment or parliment funkadelic)
early to mid period prince is very funky.
some electric jazz bassists have put out very funky records
Stanely Clarke. Jaco. Jamaldeen Tacuma (sp)
names I can't remember now.
Stanton Moore is a very funky drummer.
Liquid Soul's One-Two Punch is a great album.
Also, check out Action Figure Party's self-titled.
That's some great jazz.

I liked the first two liquid soul albums but none after that.
jonas hellborg is another great electric bassist.
I love the sound of a hammond b-3 organ for some slow burning funk.

my two favorite soul albums of the year have been Baby Charles' self titled (my favorite record of the year so far in any genre) and the Diplomats Of Solid Sound Featuring The Diplomettes album
edit: though I do have to say that though I need to give it a few more spins, I'm also digging Soullive's new one as well
edit 2: shit, also forgot about J. Rawls & Middle Child's album for when it comes to R&B. If you dug Fat John's Rebel Clique albums, this is a perfect companion.

anytime i see that movie is on tv im watching it. they went above and beyond on that. thats one thing i have to give props to vh1 for the do good work when ti comes to those things. that def leopard one they did years ago was great too.
