Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the Nintendo DS combines the arcade version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Puzzle Kombat which first appeared on Mortal Kombat Deception. Both games are included on this version and they both can be played solo, locally against a friend (on another DS) or online over the internet. We're really excited to have both of these games in one!!

from what boon said it sounds like it'll be like mario cart where you can just play anyone without codes, but you will probably need codes for friends.

Good news about UMK for DS, although I have no idea how well it will control. Hopefully they won't try to shoehorn unnecessary stylus interactions into it. :pWell it's got the four face button "plus sign" configuration, and two shoulder buttons - with the same layout, I think it's scientifically impossible for it to control worse than the 360 version. So that's encouraging in a way!

As far as the stylus goes... hopefully they'll just have you choose your character with it, and leave it at that. Or maybe something with finishing moves, but that would be a lot of crap for them to reprogram (6 finishers per character!).

It is somewhat encouraging that Boon has already acknowledged how bad MK Advance was. Hopefully they change the AI around a bit when they program this version, because the A.I. is worthless in the arcade/360 version. Also, I really hope they don't port the SNES version, but in that IGN article it sounded like they are pretty committed to arcade accuracy, so I don't think that will be a problem. I'm assuming they wouldn't even have access to the SNES code anyway (not sure who published that... Acclaim maybe?).

UMK3 for SNES added stuff the arcade didn't have. Brutalities come to mind. Hopefully they work with the original arcade stuff, I remember having UMK3 on SNES and much preferring my Genesis version of MK3 to it.

Phew, I got lucky. I almost had to either get a new 360 controller or get outta the tournament. See, I got fuckin' pissed and I slammed my 360 controller into the ground and it flew into 2 pieces (well, and the battery pack came out.) I got it back together... it's still a bit loose... but wow.

Point is, even the controllers are built like shit.

Not to sound like a dick/elitist but I always disregard any fighting game talk/opinions on CAG outside this thread.

IMO, VF's level of depth/complexity is untouchable. Some love it (myself) others hate it because it's not a fighter that is easy to pick up and play.

Good job on actually bringing up GAMEPLAY in that thread depascal. Isn't that what determines our favorite fighting games? Isn't that what determines what makes a great or mediocre fighting game?

I'm sure all the used copies I see of VF5 at EB/Gamestop aren't a reflection of the quality of the game. I'm sure it's more of people who were surprised it didn't come with diapers, a pacifier and a bottle of Gerber's mashed peas.

It also doesn't help that VF5 since it's release in the U.S, has only been available on PS3. Not many have that kind of money to just drop and many others feel that the PS3 isn't right for them at all/at the moment. There are too many factors that make judging a "Great Fighting Game" by sales, wonky as shit.

I personally prefer the one on one fighter. I like walking in with one guy and fighting against one guy. Having to practice and perfect three different guys while remember countering strategies against a huge lineup of characters gets to be a little much.

I used to be a big fan of tag team matches in DoA because switching out characters 3 times in a juggle is a blast, and of course CvS2 and MvC2 are amazing, but one on one matches are my bag.

i dont personally believe VF5 is the greatest fighter of all time (probably not even top 5, in my opinion. and just for the record, i played the hell out of it and was very good at it, so i'm not some newb). I think that it's trumped by SF3:3s, Tekken Tag Tournament, X-men vs. Street Fighter, Alpha 2, Garou and some others. To me, those are the greatest fighters of all time. I can't argue with Third Strike, Alpha 2, or XvSF. I'm just starting to play Garou but it feels tight so far. I never really like Tekken Tag. I think it's because I didn't play it until after I played Tekken 5. It made it hard to go back to an older version.

I realized there's also a break up between the team based fighters. I prefer MvC2's style instead of KOF's. You could call MvC2 organized chaos when people are going crazy with combos and assists.

in terms of the tag aspect, MvC2 really threw the whole thing off for me. Fights before hand in previous Vs games were fast paced and didn't last too long. With the addition of a third teammate and long ass fucking life bars (I'll be damned if it took me forever just to kill someone even when set to high damage + low life bars) the game felt and still does feel like a hot day of golf. Yes I enjoy the game, but I still think it's inferior to MvC1 (or most other Vs games) due to its pace. I do like the combo possabilitys and the large roster, but I always see limitations as a gift: work with what you got. Remember too that I come from a place where I love to see huge damage (Tekken, SC)

I still don't like the damage in the game... its the worst I've ever seen IMHO. yes you can kill and whatnot, but again, it feels like golf when the life bar moves 1/3 of a millimeter.

hahah, a family graduation party took an unexpected turn today. We got to the Italian catering place, and the back of the room was lined with PlayStations! So I ran home and grabbed a whole bunch of PS1 gear... binder full of games, controllers and a multitap, and I even brought my sub-par Blaze SHOCK arcade sticks out of retirement.

Drove back and I single-handedly turned that place into an arcade! Before you knew it, SFA3 drew a crowd of babies, who were banging on those joystick buttons like no one's business. My one baby cousin seemed fascinated with R. Mika, and Blanka kinda freaked her out. Meanwhile a lot of the family gravitated towards The Next Tetris, since that's always a favorite among the non-gamer crowd. My cousin was absorbed in some Millipede at the other end of the room (Midway's Arcade Hits vol.2), and a bona fide Neo Geo cabinet had my other cousins rockin' some Bust-A-Move (the chick at the place put 99 credits on that baby)!!!

I put in some MvC but then we had to leave, oh well! But man, it was crazy to see my whole family getting in on some video game action. Very surreal!!!

So I ask the idiots at registration and they try to tell me I have to wait in line(which was like several hours long) just to get a child pass... I wasn't having that so I asked someone else and then they asked some dudes inside and after a bunch of walking for no fuckin' reason they tell us that kids' 5 and under don't need a child pass...

WOW it must be a theme with all Anime conventions, shitty organization and I always thought AX would have good organization considering it's one of the largest Anime conventions in the US.

Otakon asked there panelist to pre-register with less then 24 hour notice and anyone that missed the pre-register has to wait till after the con to get a refund for registration.

As for game tournaments, Otakon always lacks on the fighting side, usually just the mainstream stuff and "new" games. Just take a look at the scheduled tournaments.

Guilty Gear is by far the worst since it's all anime fans and that's the only fighting game not anime related they play and is VERY boring to watch.

also, some of those bonuses seem pretty crazy. when it says combo, is that totally accurate? like you can get a 50% damage bonus on a genei-jin combo theoretically? i know it'd never happen in a real match, still pretty crazy though.

I think it's a special taunt. If you throw in a taunt before her Hayate move (QCF+ P) finishes it's recovery, she poses or what not.

I think the numbers are pretty accurate, I found the same set of explanations on a couple different boards. I don't think we need your Genei Jin combo doing any more damage Jim :)

on a side note, I don't think it's humanly possible to pull off her full 3 part taunt in a round, even when the other guy is dizzy. Maybe if you get a dizzy with her SA2 and start it when they're in the air?

Guilty Gear is by far the worst since it's all anime fans and that's the only fighting game not anime related they play and is VERY boring to watch.dude at the tournament there was this annoying azz kid with dyed orange hair whose name wsa Jonathan (becoz he kept shouting it out talking like "c'mon!! just say my name! it's jonathan!! call on me comon!!")

dood wouldnt shut up!! then he started talking like

"man ppl think just coz you're gonna use gold or shadow characters then you're gonna own everybody! man, gold and shadow characters don't mean shit! it's all about skillz!"

then coz like over 100 ppl entered and nobody showed up, he was like "good! all the scrubs are outta there, let's have only the true players remain"

the end of the story goes, when we finally weed out all the ppl who are actually there (about 30), this kid gets his ass kicked HARD!! like omg he cant even lay a single hit, and I thought I did bad.

then he just leaves.

regardless, the 30 ppl who ended up staying were all like Team RUN and ranbat regulars and shyt, there was definitely some serious comp going down and hell if this kid knew what was up.

ok, well over the weekend, my cousin informed me of a local fighting tourney, and I immediately stopped everything I was doing to attend. it was about 15 guys with a slew of games to play. the competition was mainly filled with newbs and button mashers, but there were a few good players. the games present were:
SFA3
SF3:3S
GGXX/
Tekken 5
Hyper Street fighter
KOF XI
Garou: MOTW

my zangief dominated SFA3 with twirly, spinny goodness. lariats,pile drivers, everythign was spinny. one guy was fairly decent with R. Mika and I had loads of fun watching him play against others. my cousin was using a combination of ken, chun and cammy to make it to the finals. in the end, both of us gave it our best, and I came out on top with v-ism Charlie.

3S was a mixed bag. not too many people were good at it and there were tons of button mashers.although, there was 1 guys that was dominating with Urien. he was busting out cool shield combo thingies. my cousin got eliminated quick because of that Urien, and I lsot to him at the semi finals. apparently my makoto wasn't good enough.

NOBODY knew how to play guilty gear efficiently. this was a sad waste of time and most victories were won with the instant KO moves. basic turtling with dizzy got me to the finals and a not so well earned victory.

the T5 scene was grand! I felt out of place specializing in 2d fighters when this came about. I ainly used king and hwaorang, and dont' understand any of the linguoyou guys use when talking about the game. (EWGF.... yeah I have no idea what that means) . so there was this King player who just plain owned everybody. I lost in a quarter finals match. my hwaorang sucks major balls.

HSF was fun and I had a great time schooling people with zangief. I had some problems with constant fireball newbs, but I greend handed to SPD'd them to death. again, my cousin and I made it to the finals, and I came out on top. there was a good Dee Jay that ws eating up the newbs and gave me a hard time. we had a double KO and everybody was like "ooooooooooohhhh!!" and stuff.

comign form a community of mainly mexicans, the KOf XI scene was strong. there was a hella sweet kula/ clark/ iori player just eating people up. it's like the control was his fork and his characters were the prongs, and he would just be poking at and playing with his food, flinging it every which way. I lost early because i'm not as skilled as the rest of them. they busted some crazy tag combos I can only dream of doing.

when Garou came on, I lighted up and just began wailing on everybody that came my way. I used tizoc/griffon, kevin and jenet sparingly for kicks, and terry when I felt pressured. not too many people gave me trouble. and these were some of the more energetic matches of the night IMO.

all in all it was a good night, and I can't wait to get a call back from some of these people for another tourney.

now onto sad news... I just got my check and see that i've been underpayed by at least half of my paycheck :( bad times ahead.

on the subject of fighters (man this entire page is off topic), who will win Tekken 6? Your only options are:

- Kazuya (world leader)
- Jin (world leader)
- A Mishima/Kazama other than Jin or Kaz.
- Random left feild non mishima/kazama character (ie. Yoshi, Ganryu, etc.)


personally I see Kazuya winning or heihachi being a bitch and taking it all back. A really nice twist would be to see Lee finally take over.

I wish I could hit up SDCC/EVO West. A close friend of mine is going (he lives in So Cal) and has been trying to convince me to go for the last month or two. It would be a nice way to celebrate my birthday later this month.

Thing is I don't have the funds and I'm TRYING to get to EVO World this year.

Hey Jekki, you can't blame markman and his crew for the entire fiasco. Fools at Aksys / Arc systems tried to run a tournement with fools not showing up on time. Not to mention, last I heard, their tourney actually allowed players to use sticks and not just only pad. They actually had players that turned away the AX tourney to do theirs because of the AX bs...just my two cent

I played SF2 on XBLA for the first time in a while earlier today, and you know what? It was fun. I still can't stand the d-pad on the original 360 controller, as I jumped forwards numerous times when I should've jumped backwards, and I could barely pull off the dragon punch, but it was fun. I got in a quarter match with a few other guys, and it was a hoot to listen to them gab while I was the most sensible person there.

And there was no lag. Even though I was playing against someone in the UK, there was no lag. At least, nothing noticeable.

ok, well over the weekend, my cousin informed me of a local fighting tourney, and I immediately stopped everything I was doing to attend. it was about 15 guys with a slew of games to play. the competition was mainly filled with newbs and button mashers, but there were a few good players. the games present were:

GGXX/
Tekken 5
Hyper Street fighter
KOF XI

the tournament was very bad but it was not anybody's fault, it was more so due to fault of just space and construction of the area itself. You cannot sign 100+ ppl up for a tournament that goes down in an incredibly small booth with 2 TVs.

and even if only 30 of them show up, you're still hardcore aisle-blocking and fire-hazarding up the azz.

plus the reason lots of ppl shun the console tourneys and opt for the aksys one is becoz most doods playing the console shyt suck ass! they're just nerd who feel its part of their nerd nature to play games.

plus it's fuckin Aksys, the doods actually bringing Accent Core to the US. NOBODY would bring that game to the US unless they had their heads tuned to the fans and the niche crowds who still play that stuff.

as I said earlier, a lot of top players showed up to the tourney, players who unlike me never stopped playing GG once #R came out. If a company is going to bring their game to US shores, and fix all the glitches in it as well, players will come and show their respects no matter how disastrous they kno it's going to be.

they can have another tournament next year, it will still suck. There's nothing they can do about that at all, but ppl will still come and participate so it's all good.
