We will be resetting the Diablo II ladder on June 25, 2007, beginning a new ladder season and providing a fresh start for those participating on the ladder realms. All current ladder characters will be moved to the non-ladder realm, and the ladder realm will re-open as a blank slate where all-new heroes can make their mark. Try out a new character idea, adventure with your friends, and race to be the first on your realm to reach level 99. The realms will be offline for approximately four hours during the ladder reset. Once the specific schedule for the reset has been determined, we’ll post that information in the Battle.net Status Forum (http://www.battle.net/forums/board.aspx?ForumName=battlenet-status).

Anyone planning on starting up again? Nothing like a fresh new start.

Post it up if you want to start up a CAG "clan" (Plan on playing USEast too)

I just started again a couple months ago, I got my Sorceress up to 83... this kinda sucks for me, since I was late to the second ladder, I never got to do the whole key thing. I got to kill Uber Diablo for an Anni in the first ladder season, though.

Anyway, yeah, I'll start a new ladder character. I'll probably stick to US West though, just because all my friends play on it. I'd quest with any fellow CAGs who plan on playing US West.

I haven't played Diablo 2 in forever, I don't know if I'm up for playing more of it though. I do suggest everyone play on US West, that way you guys can go into the CAG Starcraft chat, it'd be one big CAG family on Battle.net

Do you mean bone/poison, or like Bone Spirit-based? Bone Spirit necros haven't been very good for like three years, or whenever 1.09 came out. Poison/bone are still good though.

I picked up Diablo II and the expansion on the cheap recently, but I've never played online. I'm still working my way through the single player acts. How does this online ladder work? Do you play through the game cooperatively with other people? Is it a persistent world you play in? Or is it more like deathmatch PvP type play?
similar to starcraft, 8 players per game, monsters/exp/item drops improve with each player in game. Play game normally, just more ppl, and faster :) not to mention some online only equipment, and ladder only uber items.

Eh, maybe. Diablo II on bnet (US East) has been nothing but a lagfest for me the past year or so -- disappointing because I used to love playing online and never experienced any issues in the past.

I have only ever played Diablo II a few times (when it first came out and before the expansion). Then my computer crashed and I never reinstalled. I just got a new laptop and have been playing older games on it. Warcraft III, SC, Fallout 1&2, and want to play Diablo. Has structure and gameplay changed much with the patches and updates? Are Palladins still any good?

Good question, Blizzard has added a ton of extra stuff and gameplay, so if you've played before patch 1.10, you might as well have played a different game...I'd recommend choosing a character you wanna play, and finding a guide on GameFAQs to mold him/her to your liking.

The short answer to your question is that Paladins are still good, but are now played completely differently (as casters instead of melee).

As HotShot said, a lot changed in 1.10 - primarily synergies, which would take longer than it's worth to explain here. Essentially, synergies changed which spells are the 'best', and also added a lot of balance to the trees. Paladin's best skill is now Blessed Hammer, which a properly built character can cast to do 16,000+ damage per hit.

The problem with playing Paladin as your first character is that the gear is ridiculously expensive. Hammerdins are arguably the most powerful build, but they require the most expensive gear in the game.

For complete newbs I'd suggest a summoning Necromancer, as they're by far the easiest to play and you won't have any trouble with anything until late Nightmare. For more experienced players' first character in a new patch I suggest Sorceress, since even with awful gear a Sorceress can do Mephisto runs on any difficulty quite quickly (to get good gear for building other characters).

Basically any class can do well for anyone, that's just my opinion.

That doesn't seem new to me. In the past, Hammerdin used to be ultra powerful with soj or skill related gears in pre expansion days. Blizzard constantly nerfing one character to make one stronger depending on which patch it is. I lost count of characters that used to be powerful from Whirlwind barb, fire wall sorc, blizzard orb sorc, zeal paladins, wolf melee druids and trap assaisin.

What really made me quit is the amount of asshole out there. Greedy people hug around bosses for good drops, pker's, dupers and people don't work as team. Without a clan, it pretty hard find a team of good open players

I believe a few of the CAGs have made it clear that they prefer to play on USWest, and considering that I've never really had a good experience on East (despite living in Florida), I'm inclined to agree.

We should try to accomodate as many as we can. It also goes without saying that we'll be playing the expansion. :)

There's a ladder reset monday, hence the sudden interest in starting anew. In short, everyone's making a new character, no choice about it. As for the tag, we could do without it, doesn't matter to me, I just want a general consensus on the matter so we don't have a few guys without the tag looking stupid :)

Also, I did some reading up on the "World Event" in which an uber Diablo walks the earth in hell difficulty, and drops an uber charm when beaten (+1 All Skills, +10-20 All Stats, +10-20 All Resists, +5-10% Experience). Oh, and he's like 6x stonger than Hell Diablo, something to look forward to.

Oh yeah, with the reset being tomorrow, we should probably establish a meeting time and place.

I opt for the following:

Realm: USWest
Channel: CAG
Room: CAG
Pass: CAG
Time: 7PM EST

Bear in mind that we all need to make: "Standard Ladder" Characters, not Hardcore, not Non-Ladder :), and I'd recommend we have a good amount of diversity amongst character...that way we can help each other out with gear, etc. As long as your not a dick to me, I'll hold that uber bow I looted from Diablo for you. ;)

With the USWest server and CAG channel, we'll be able to chat with the Starcaft CAGs as well. I'll be on at that time with my Necro.

Ah, I didn't know there was a different event per ladder season. If such is the case, then we have something completely different, yet just as awesome to watch for once we hit the 85+ levels.

I though level 85 is easy to achieve when expansion came out, unless blizzard changed xp formula now. If you get good clan members, they can help you push your character to act 5 hell less then one day then you start leeching xp in baal or cow runs. Most hardcore clans can get character lvl 99 in day and half to 2 days by rotating players playing the same account

You don't really get experience from Baal runs until level 25, and you can't even do Ancients until 20. The fastest way to level is Trist runs until 14, Tomb runs until 20, Cow until 25, then Baal until 40, NM Baal until 60, then hell Baal. I, personally, usually quest through Normal, then look for a NM rush, do NM Baal runs, then quest through Hell... just for fun.

High levels were easier to achieve earlier in the game, when you could just cow until 90 easy.

Heh, wow people are more out of touch than I thought. That world event has been around for a long time. The most recent addition was Keys and Organs to get a Hellfire torch.

Popular PvP Characters:
Smite Paladin- Dominates Melee combat and can take out sorcs with ease using Charge. A smite pally with Grief and an item that lets you cast the Necromancer curse that turns your damage into life is nigh unstopable with the right gear to switch out.

Trapsassin- Does very well at PvP with the use of lightning traps and appropriate +light damage gear. Needs lots of +1 skill charms to be most effective. Also having Enigma is highly recommended for avoiding being hit.

Poison WW Sin- Using a certain runeword claw, assassins can make use of the barbarian skill Whirlwind. Add to this tons of poison damage through skills and charms and you've got a very good PvP character.

Glass Cannon- Though not as effective as they were in 1.09, bowazons using guided arrow can still do a decent amount of damage, however they are very gear specific. Put only enough points into Str to sue your gear and dump everything else into Dex. Grab yourself a rare Grand Matron bow and armor/ helm outfitted with x7 40/15 jewels. Fire away. You do lots of damage fast but beware, you will die in one hit. Luckily the dodging skills save you more often than not.

Light Sorc- Very feared are these sorcs unless you have the right gear to face them (stack light res+absorbtion gear) with enough +1 light skill charms these sorcs can pump out the damage fast while still being highly maneuverable using teleport without having to resort to using Enigma.

Blizzard Sorc- The cold sorc has gotten several good upgrades since 1.09, frozen orb is no longer the way to go. With all of its synergies, Blizzard can often 1 hit KO anyone who stays around long enough to take the damage. Like the light sorc, these sorcs can easily be countered by using stacked cold res and a very common PvP ring, Ravenfrost.

Whirlwind Barb- Barbs have a very deadly combination at their disposal with the 1.10/1.11 runewords. The most common of which is Beast, which grants the paladin's fanaticism aura and Doom, which grants the paladin's holy freeze aura. Unlike most other forms of cold damage the holy freeze bypasses the "cannot be frozen" effect from items giving you a massive speed advantage against anyone who gets close enough to you. Combine this with Battle Orders for a massive life total and Whirlwind and its GG.

PnB Necro- I don't have much experience playing as one but against them they are a real pain for any melee character. PnB necros do a high amount of non-elemental damage through the use of bone spear and occasionally bone spirit. There are very few ways to prevent this damage. PnB necros also make using of bonewall to obstruct the path of advancing melee characters which makes it particularly difficult to actually hit them. They also like to use Enigma to make quick getaways.

FoH Pally- The FoH paladin makes use of his Conviction aura to lower the resistances of his target, and they attempt to instantly kill them using Fist of the Heavens, an auto target skill that only requires that you click near the opponent. I have never found the FoH pally to be useful on its own in high level PvP, but its fun to take one into Hardcore mode and 1 shot the characters that won't be coming back to life :)

The Hammerdin- While the Hammerdin is the god of PvE, they aren't too bad at PvP, assuming you can get people to walk into your hammers. Playing as a hammerdin usually works 1 of 2 ways. The first is to plan your field of hammers and try to herd the opponent into it using a combination of charge to try to desynch them and launching 1 or 2 hammers to try to send them into your main field of hammers. The second way is using enigma and teleporting directly below them and the letting loose a hammer or 2 and then teleporting away. If you hit them with both hammers 9 times out of 10 you will have killed them. It it fairly difficult to PK with a hammerdin against ranged characters especially since you have to stand still to cast your hammers leaving you momentarily vulnerable to AoE attacks such as Blizzard.

Wind Druid- Using a combination of... I forget the name, Hurricane? Basically you surround yourself with a hurricane, summon some wolves as fodder for melee characters, teleport on top of your opponent using Enigma and then blast away with the non-elemental damage of Tornado. This build works particularly well against spell casters, as you have a windshield that negates a certain amount of elemental damage.

Thats all I can think of for now, those, I believe, are the most common in high level PvP.

Yeah, servers down at 5pm EST, 2pm PST. Assuming they take the full 4 hours, we'll meet up around 9pm EST, 6pm PST in the CAG chatroom.

Since it's a new ladder, I'd recommend making all of your chars now to ensure you get the names you want, before playing tonight. As far as I know, we won't be doing the CAG tags, but feel free to express yourself.

I imagine I'll be doing HSX-CharName with my heroes, just so I'm easier to identify, and so I can pick whatever surname I want :)

My level 44 Sorceress is boned. She's in Act 4 of Nightmare and can't really get any further as it is. Act 2 was pretty tough, but Act 4 is damn near impossible... I die in one or two hits. My gear sucks so I don't have high enough Faster Cast Rate to tele though it, and even if I did, I really doubt I could beat Diablo. I had to have help for Duriel, and used the moat trick for Mephisto...

I could level more, but it wouldn't really help. A little health? A little more Blizzard damage? Wouldn't make a difference, since my Blizzard already kills most things in one hit, and health isn't terribly useful when my defense, block and resists all suck. My gear is what's holding me back. I haven't found anything at all useful, I'm basically naked except for a little resist and a little mana regen.

I wish I would've made a Paladin or Necro, at this point. Some class that can survive without great gear.

One of the things I've noticed about Blizz sorcs is that early on, they're kind of dependent on grouping until Baal Hell. Just group with people to get through the quests, get some rushes, and get up there. Then you can farm for stuff.

I happened upon a very nice LLD rare jewel yesterday, but I don't know about the market for such things anymore. +7 max damage, +8% ed, level req of 8. Awwwwright.

Made it up to 43 so far, hope to get NM beat by tonight so I can get to the "good" stuff : )

Yeah, I made 2 characters on Non-Ladder, because of the reset. I'm probably going to restart ladder once I'm done.

I have a NL Blizz Sorc that's not quite as strong as yours but still pretty nice. She's level 88, mostly MF-oriented gear with few exceptions (resist, absorb, +str from enigma to allow monarch). Only +3 skill from gear, +7 more from charms, 425% MF... her merc has an Insight. Insight is basically unlimited mana, I can't run out even if I try. Thanks to FCR she can tele to Durance 3 without getting hit, and I then kill Council (teleing to avoid hydra) then use the moat trick so that my relatively weak level 30 Blizz can kill Meph.

Each run takes about 2 minutes. I actually get temp banned sometimes from running too fast (any more than 20 runs an hour gives a temp ban). The only issue is that my merc dies every time I do the moat trick, so I have to get enough loot from Meph to sell to revive him. It's very rarely problematic, though.

That's basically what I'm aiming to re-achieve in ladder.

Hey guys, building my hammerpally (lvl77 hell ladder) so it can eventually do some solo hell runs (baal or pit). But as of right now it's a little too early. It's damned hard to get a hold of enigma. But once people start geting rich, I'll be able to trade in some of my stuff then the runs will start rolling in.

At the moment, I'll be playing with my sorc (lvl85 hell ladder), MFing (accnt: Viper-BD). And if anyone wants some stuff, I'll try to help you out, though my selection is far from what you call leet.

Well this one uses a Passion Phase Blade, which allows you to Zeal. I do 6.5-50k melee damage with a SORC.

I never got to use any of the fun stuff because I could never afford all the runes... =( My highest drop ever was like a pul...

Last ladder season, in the span of 2 months, I found 2 Guls, 2 Puls, a Lo, an Um, 2 Mals, and a Vex. That's not counting the 40+ HRs I traded for in a week :lol:

I've been playing pretty hardcore since the reset, currently at lvl 85, snagged up a Homunculus and Annihulus. However, I've got a final tomorrow evening, so I won't be on for a bit.

Aside from that, we should get everyone to Hell, then set a meeting time for some baal runs or world events. The only downside to this so far is that we have to wait for everyone to reach a level that we can meet up and go questing together. Just takes time.

That being said, each CAG should report their current status, and the OP should update the first post to reflect this.

Well, played some more lately. Mostly mfing. Found some good stuff. However one instance after getting a mara's, a person wanted to "trade". When I made a game, the guy asked me to drop it and pick it up fast to verify if it was legit. (luckily I wasn't born yesterday)

Heh, hilarious. Yeah, things have changed quite a bit since the game first came out. I still remember the glory days of stealing accounts with something as simple as:

lol, I had about 5 sheets of paper FILLED with accounts/passwords. Mostly newbs, but quite a couple of good accounts as well. I only lifted the good items from the account, and never changed the pass, deleted characters, etc. That's just total douchbaggery right there. :)

If you can teleport, you can do Hell Meph instead. Just do the moat trick and it's easy "bank". From all the time I was running Hell Meph and Andy, I got 2 Maras and 2SoJs.

I just found an awesome trick... get 3 perfect gems and a grand charm. The grand charm has to be high level -- I use the ones I get from hell Mephisto, but probably any grand charm from hell would work. Transmute it. If the GC had a high item level, there's a one in two chance of it being a +skill charm.
I thnk it'd be better if the charm were gotten from a qlvl 85 monster area like Pit or Mausoleum. I believe Meph is only 83. But either way both yield high lvl charms.

Not if you want the elusive skill GC 40 lifer. That's why most people use Baal-dropped GCs.

Yes. You are correct. More of a chance for a skiller. As the above post states, if you want to get a skiller with another mod you'll need higher than ilvl50. But then again, the chances of these are very low.

Basically fight in an area of ilvl 50, you roughly have 1/50 chance of getting skiller (actually more since there are more ilvl50 skill type mods than all the others). The charms from here could be from lvl 1-50 generally. Same goes for places with higher ilvls, which would again mean less chance of getting those ilvl50 charms since it now includes items from level 1-xx.

If it were easy as Koggit claims, everyone would have skill charms and their relative value would drop significantly.

Using the lowest ilvl possible increases the odds of rolling a skiller but cuts down the number of useful suffix’s available.
There is a 50% chance of rolling a charm with skiller, 25% prefix only and 25% prefix and suffix.

There are 74 non-skill prefix’s available and 21 skill prefix’s = 95 in total.
21/95 = ~0.22
But given that there is only a 50% chance for a prefix to show up we halve that number
= ~0.11.
Therefore out of 10,000 rerolls (30,000 pgems) 1100 should come up with skill mods.
Thus there is a ~ 1/10 chance of a skiller at ilvl 50

Yes, look at the charm guide i linked to. It has similar wording, only difference is suffix. It makes much more sense that way.

And ilvl 50 charms are usually got from act3 nightmare.

Blame Blizzard. Bosses always used to drop pretty damn well, but since its all most people did, Blizzard lowered the drops on bosses to "make people enjoy the rest of the game". Since they dropped less, people ran them even more. So they made bots so you didn't have to sit there for 8 hours to get one item.

Blizzard ruined the game by making it so that only those that bot actually get good stuff.

I've let my bot run at least 100 hours this ladder, and still couldn't even afford a single Enigma if I liquidated everything I own.

Duping is what really ruins the game.

I agree, that duping is the main reason for the game's sad state. However, things such as maphack and tppk are unfair advantages others have. I used to play a lot of hardcore, and you had to be very careful because you could be tppked in an instant.

This game has always been a grind fest at some point. For example:

Back in classic, you do cs runs. When the expansion first came out doing Hill runs was the place to get exp. Later on it was hell cows runs. Now its Hell baals.

The problem I have with bots, is I spend X hours myself mfing while you can take care of other life matters such as sleeping and working and still find good stuff.

I'm getting sick of all the "elite" players with their infinity, enigma, cta, CoH, etc, from their duped runes and then sit around calling you a noob because you found all your stuff legitly.

I've played this game since it first came out, I preferred it without runes, 1.08 or 1.09 were probably the best patches.

I hated the huge blast of rune words. I miss the days of trying to make perfect gems to gan an SOJ. I remember the first time I got an SOJ was like the biggest day in gaming history for me.

The biggest thing I miss is rares being the best items. Now, like you said, if you don't have CTA, enigma and all that other shit, you're ridiculed. Not only that, but the fact that Blizzard simultaneously raised the level of gear you need for hell, but has consistently lowered drop rates. They're chiding all the people that do nothing but MF runs but at the same time catering the game to that same 1% with the super elite gear.

You get good gear by doing hundreds of hell runs. Conversely, you can't survive hell runs without good gear. Its a catch-22 Blizzard has done nothing but make worse.

Funky, you're just being nostalgic. There was no point to sockets before runes. You can tell they planned for them beforehand as gems were pretty useless to put in items. They really still are, and they've been IMPROVED since 1.0.

Not all sockets were useless. A 3d tower was fantastic, meaning 3 perfect diamonds in a tower shield.(I'm talking about classic here) Then you had 4soc armor to put 4 ptopaz. I liked rares actuatally being useful. The only rares that might be worth anything are rare circlets, amulets and rings. The imbue quest is worthless. I'm not against runewords, but quite frankly, they're way too overpowered.

Even perfect skulls were decent before leech was nerfed.

Other things I dislike is how impossible some builds are without dupewords and other rare items. Melee chars are very difficult these days. They made durance of hate level 2 HUGE in order to discouraged mfing meph? I understand the desire to use mh just for durance of hate level 2. I used to mf with my barb back in older patches with no problem. Now its totally impractical unless I have engima.

That is another gripe I have with these rune words. Other than charges of spell X, you're just unbalancing the game to the "elite" players who can afford//dupe the needed runes for it.

I like building my characters from nothing, its fun. You do nightmare meph and andy until you get enough gear to try hell. I was doing pindle, shenk and eldrich for awhile before getting the needed levels and equipment to handle hell andy and meph. I played A LOT when the ladder started and had semi decent gear, and ppl were totally decked out with infinity, engima, CoH, etc.

Rares can get quite high, actually. I've seen some rares up to 350%. It all depends on the mods that it rolls with.

Apparently, they've reached the point of farming keys and doing uber trist for the torches of unbalance.

I spent hours debugging a bot Friday and then realized I was just wasting time trying to find a way to find more items that I would put on characters I never play.

I think I might have to get back into this game. I had a necromancer that killed servers. I would summon the max of everything and had no room to move. Also had two druids. One I was building like the tank in the guid only trying to fit full skulls in all the socket armor or the sword. that way every attack would get me health back. the other was in wolf form and was just fast poison attacks built some what the same way as the bear.

Only thing that made me stop playing was when they had any big update it expired the toon. Do they still do that. I really don't want to start playing get to 50 or so like I did before and not be able to play it again when they have a large update.

They had said that the next update was a mager one and that all toons will expire. I had someone that I worked with at the time tell me that every now and then(at that time about ones a year 2 times a year at most) they did that. Is it still 90 days of not playing the toon and it will still expire or was it 30?

The reason for the expiration that time was the move from 1.09 to 1.10. It changed a hell of a lot including skill animations, adding in synergies, and balancing out all the skills (lol). Usually, a patch doesn't require that.

I'm not entirely sure where the confusion is coming from, but characters have never expired due to a patch.

There have been four resets so far, in which ladder characters become non-ladder, where everyone who wants to be ranked on the ladder (or make ladder-only runewords, or do the world events like Uber Diablo and Uber Tristam) must make new characters.

The non-ladder characters can still be played on the closed Battle.net servers after a reset. There are surely some non-ladder characters played today that have probably existed ever since the game was launched. Items changed, but often items found or made in the older patches retail those stats. That's why people want older Vamp Gazes (when Damage Reduction could be 25%, but in newer patches it's capped at 20% -- on non-ladder you can still find 25% Vamp Gazes, if they were found from a long time ago).

The only time a character expires -- which is the only time you can no longer play that character -- is after 90 days of inactivity.

Do the servers still lag alot? Right after the patched it so you couldn't use bone necro or meteor sorc I tried doing uber runs and it would boot you several times. Does that still happen?

Not really sure what you're asking.

Heres some info probably related to whatever you're talking about:

Meteor and Bonewall can cause a game to drop if spammed. It does so to prevent server-wide lag.

With a Hellfire Torch, multi hitting skills such as multishot, strafe, and lightning fury, can also cause the game to drop, if there are other players in the game aside from yourself.

Uber-runs, aka using 2 hammerdins to kill the minions to get from 1-80 in a super short amount of time, will always drop after about 2 hours. This is most likely due to the insane amount of corpses that are left behind.

Uber-runs, as in using a smite pally to solo the uber's just to get a torch, has no such issue.

Hopefully one of those answers your question.

Sorry, I was saying that once they introduced the drop from game when ping got too high, everyone would get kicked from uber runs because so much stuff was going on. Also, sometimes baal runs got dropped when he sent out the minions because of so much going on. I was just wondering if this was still happening.

Would you be willing to rush my char to hell? I think I would start playin if I had someone to play and help get an initial character up.

Oh, also, can you still glitch it so you can skip ancients and go straight to baal?

Hammerdin needs relatively good gear. Enigma is nearly a requirement.

I think Sorceress is probably the best with crap gear. Necro is pretty good too. Either one can be completely outfitted for less than Enigma.

Well... maybe runewords are worth less now than they were, considering the market of dupes has had time to grow.

I havn't made a fire or lightning sorc before but did have an ice orb (I think that's what it's called) and a blizz sorc before.

What would be the best to use when just starting out with nothing (as in what would have best mf and be easiest to outfit in gear)

Meteor sorceress was always good to me for Meph runs. You can just roll with topazed stuff for a while and use the moat trick until you get better gear.

A sorceress with bad gear won't be as strong as a Necro for PvM questing, but she'll be much better for MFing. I actually like Blizzard Sorceresses best as a first MF char. Since you already had one you might want to try something else, but Blizzard is the best for low-budget hell Meph runs, which is a great way to boost your wealth until you can afford to outfit other characters. Blizzard is ideal because non-cold spells don't do much damage in Hell without +skills, due to resistances. Cold Mastery cuts resistances, while Fire/Light do not. Hell meph has 75% cold resist, but cold mastery will bring it down to -100, doubling your cold damage.

You can get gear that cuts resists for other elements, but it's usually pretty expensive, and it ties up gear slots that could be better used for raising MF.

The best way to go IMO is a cheap sorceress with a fast cast rate (to get through Durance), decent resists (so council doesn't one-hit kill you) and as much MF as possible.
