I'm heading off to college again this Fall for my Sophomore semester, and after some scares on my floor where people's electronics were stolen (among other things), I thought it'd be the smart thing to get renters insurance for my dorm room. This is especially important since I'll be bringing things like my laptop, an HDTV, and other smaller electronics with me. I want to make sure I have things covered so that in the event that it is stolen, I'm at least covered if I need to replace these items.

Have any of you had renters insurance in the past, and could recommend a really good company that I should do business with? I only need it from this August to next May, since I'll be away from the university of another couple of years as I go overseas for other school work. As long as it isn't too expensive and offers a good deductible, among other things, I'd love to hear what you guys used. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Edit: By the way, I only need like $5000 worth of coverage.

at $5000 worth of coverage, you wont be paying much. I think I have $10,000(maybe $15k) worth and it only costs me about $150 for an entire year.

I have it through Farmer's, but I've never had to make a claim so I can't say how easy they are to deal with.

I also have it through State Farm, it is actually cheaper for me to obtain driver's and Renter's insurance together through them to just get my driver's insurance.

I think my renters premium is right around Odhen's

State Farm, hmm? Every time I try to get a quote online, it asks me all this information like its construction, what it's made out of, the contents inside of it... all that stuff. It gave me a $75 annual fee with this:

Contents Amount: $10,000
Deductible: $500
Personal liability: $100,000
Medical payments to others: $1,000

But I'm completely unsure of whether I got it right or not. It'd be great if it would tell me that it specifically covers dorm rooms or something, because it's certainly not an apartment like what this appears to be. lol

Best bet will be with your auto insurance carrier. Typically you get an additional 10% discount on your insurance for multiple policies. I have farmers and when I added renters policy it reduced my total cost. It was basically free!

Well, I don't have auto insurance. I don't even have a car atm. I figure there's no reason to worry about car insurance and gas prices, especially since this is a college town and everything is within a 2 mile radius. I wish I could do it, but I simply don't have the choice.

How about these guys? It seems they're specifically tailored towards college students. Anyone ever heard of them: http://nssinc.com/

EDIT: Oooh, I just checked the BBB. It seems like these guys are great: http://www.tulsabbb.org/commonreport.html?bid=18233221

0 complaints through the BBB in the last 36 months? I might have to choose these guys. :D

I personally had State Farm for about 8 years. I currently use State Farm for my home owners insurance and car insurance. I've never had a problem with them.

I use Farmers and for around $15k of coverage its around $120 a year. About to have to change that now that I'm getting married and doubled my stuff....doh!
