How is there not a definitive MP3 thread yet? Weird.
Anyway, some exciting news via Kotaku, who picked it up from Play and Go Nintendo:
The gang at Play magazine got to play Metroid (http://kotaku.com/gaming/metroid/) 3 a little while back. As they were no doubt obliged to do, they've written about their experiences, thus letting us all know some of the things we can expect from the game when it turns up. It all sounds a bit promising:
Wii Remote controls work better than the old dual-thumbstick ones.
It's got beam stacking, ala Super Metroid.
The endless Metroid back-tracking makes (apparently) more sense.
It's got larger environments, better textures and BLOOM LIGHTING.
Play believe, in their own opinion, that it could well be the "biggest revolution in FPS gaming since Halo".Let's get this bloom lighting party started like it's 2005! More, slightly-spoilerish, less boastful info over at Go Nintendo (http://kotaku.com/gaming/nintendo/). Luke Plunkett

I don't know which thread to post in. But they will be merged or something, so whatever. I was thinking I would wait till I played MP1 and 2 to get this, but I think the FPS aiming might make me a lot happier than the crap in the first two. But I'll probably still wait on it.

I know why people are still playing it, but it's not because it's a revolution in FPSes or anything.
Aaanyway, back on topic: I'm posting in the other thread now because it has more posts already. I want to be one of the popular kids.

Maybe not compared to PC FPS, but it was a revolution in console FPS gaming.

Yep, console FPSes would not be where they are today if it weren't for Goldeneye and Halo. Goldeneye introduced it to the masses (I know it wasn't the first, but still) and Halo polished it.

I used to play that a lot. It was fun. I should try again with my PS3 since I can apparently install it to the HDD.
As for Metroid, I really hope they cut back on the backtracking, it was too much in the first game. And item collecting. I almost quit in MP1 when you have to collect all the artifacts or whatever they were.

I think you mean MP2 -- that was the one with the gratuitous backtracking for artifacts/keys/whatever. The first one was actually pretty good about it.

I'm talking about the part where you have to collect the things and then you fight Ridley
It wasn't too bad except I was usually clueless on where to look :-P
I heard MP2 was horrible with item collecting so I didn't touch it.

Halo was a revolution in FPS gaming? Yeah fuckin' right. Then again, it's Play.As posted below, Halo's control setup made FPS a viable genre on consoles. Thus, revolutionary is appropriate.

Like other FPS's.
I don't know really what it did with the controls, but I guess it was revolutionary according to everyone else. Played like any other FPS to me except you could jump pretty high in it :-P

I still say Red Faction was way better than Halo.

The controls were good, but the whole Halo package is what made it great. Story, music, graphics, atmosphere, multiplayer, replayability, etc. I don't know much about revolutionary, but it was a fantastic game. Still is.

Oh, and don't forget you could bounce on people's faces after you killed them. That made it teh nUmb3R ! FPS.
Back on topic, I'm a day one Prime 3 purchaser. I loved the first two. Love the universe and can't wait to play this one.

Well, for one, consider how often you used your melee attacks or grenades in other first person shooters, prior to Halo. Any answer other than "My what now?" makes your nose grow. Then there's the seamless transition to a third-person viewpoint for things that had been pretty much impossible to implement well in first person until then, like manning vehicles. There's also the two weapon limit and the recharging health, which are also frequently "borrowed" by other games.
That's not even counting Halo 2's matchmaking, or the overall weapon balance ("Wait, the pistol is a viable weapon?!") and so on. You don't have to love the games, but it's hard to miss how much they've done for shooters, especially on consoles.

I'm going to disagree on the story part since well...what Halo 1 had as far as story goes was pretty lame. If you wanted a real story you had to look outside the game (books and stuff) and those don't count, only what you get from the game counts.
Rest was ok except the copy and paste areas (you know what I'm talking about) and replayability. After I beat it I promptly took it back to blockbuster and never looked back. Maybe co-op might make you want to play it again, but not me.

Halo was the first game to really nail the dual analog setup to not make things to slow, to fast to play, auto-aim, etc. Every other FPS has just aped Halo for thweir controls by-and-large. I hope the same is true of MP3 if it turns out well, so that other FPS games can play well on the Wii too.

Well, I really enjoyed the story. Your expectations must be pretty high, especially considering that it's a videogame. Unless you're one of those uber cool people on this site and the internet in general, that hate everything that is embraced and enjoyed by the masses? As for replayability, I really enjoyed seeing if I could beat the game on 'Heroic' and 'Legendary'. The game was so fun to play, the multiple difficulties added to how cool you felt after you beat it than any other game I had played up to that point. I was just playing this on PC today, and destroying everything with your rocket launcher, tank, sniper rifle is just as satisfying as ever. I'm sorry you don't enjoy it.

There just wasn't much story in it at all. Hard for me to love what's not there.

I guess I was just expecting more since Halo was the reason I bought an xbox.

Once again, a thread now about anything but what's mentioned in the topic title.
And really, the Halo franchise should not be referenced in any Metroid thread. And vice versa.
It's like the two series found Aliens, split up all the assets, and then went their separate ways. Just like Journey sang. Let's leave it that way.

With all due respect, the overall weapon balance is nowhere near the awe-inducing class that is Unreal Tournament. The very first one. I'll be quiet now.
